Luz y oscuridad es una novela de singular valor en la obra de Natsume Sōseki y en la literatura japonesa moderna. La muerte del autor en 1916 dejó la novela interrumpida en el capítulo 188. Muchos escritores japoneses han especulado sobre un posible final para esta historia. Fue Minae Mizumura quien hizo suyo el desafío de imaginarlo. En su continuación –tarea admirable que permite seguir la trama sin haber leído la novela inconclusa–, recrea la escritura de Sōseki para describir las “partes oscuras” decisivas a la hora de delinear las relaciones entre personajes. Educated in the US, she wrote her first published work in the English language, a scholarly essay on the literary criticism of Paul de Man. She is often portrayed as a Japanese novelist who questions the conventional boundaries of national literature. Her novels include Light and Darkness Continued, An I-Novel, and A True Novel, which has been selected for the Japanese Literature Publishing Project, a national program to promote translations of Japanese literature. She also writes essays and literary criticism in major newspapers and journals. Many of Minae Mizumura's works have been described as highly readable and often entertaining, while, at the same time, resonating with historical significance. They are also known for their formalistic innovations, such as making use of unusual printing formats and inserting English texts and photographic illustrations. Because she returned to Japan as an adult and chose to write in the Japanese language despite her coming of age in the United States and her education in the English language, critics have often noted her particular love for Japanese language and her commitment to Japanese literature. Her analysis and observations on the demise of the Japanese language, detailed in her book of criticism called The Fall of the Japanese Language in the Age of English, gained much attention from the mainstream media as well as the Internet. In the same book, she wrote of the significance of preserving the great literary tradition established during the time of building modern Japan.
Minae Mizumura has taught at Princeton University, the University of Michigan and Stanford University. She was a resident novelist in the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa in 2003. She has won the 1991 Agency for Cultural Affairs New Artist Award, the 1996 Noma New Artist Award, and the 2003 Yomiuri Prize for Literature. Minae Mizumura now resides in Tokyo, Japan.

"明暗(Light and Darkness)" is an unfinished posthumous novel by Natsume Souseki, one of most famous and greatest novelists in modern era of Japan. "続明暗 (A Sequel to Light and Darkness)" is a novel written by then obscure contemporary writer/literary critic Minae Mizumura, who grew up and devoured Japanese classic novels in the USA. It's a kind of "selfish attachment", as she herself admitted in afterword in this book, to write the sequel of the novel written by such a literary master, however, I believe, her challenge succeeded and still the result is not just a imitation of Soseki's writing style but has her original fascination of storytelling. This work was accomplished by her diligence, respect and brevity. If you have read "明暗", you should also try this one.

Que puedo decir de esta tremenda historia. Es la primera vez que leo a Minae Mizumura y que mejor que comenzar con su primera novela. A grandes rasgos es la continuación de la novela de Natsume Soseki "Luz y Oscuridad" , aquí se nos presenta a un matrimonio joven que después de vivir una situación complicada de salud por parte de Tsuda el Esposo, este decide irse a refugiar a un lugar retirado de Tokio en las Montañas para descansar. (Aunque el motivo es otro)
A lo largo de la historia las intrigas entre los personajes que rodean al joven matrimonio hacen que haya dudas, sufrimiento, odio, y varios sentimientos y emociones que veremos a lo largo de los capitulos gracias a qué los dos personajes Tsuda y O-Nobu estarán al filo de la tensión entre las intrigas y la búsqueda de respuestas claras. En el caso del personaje de O - Nobu es una mujer inocente que busca luchar con el fantasma de un amor pasado de Tsuda y pese a que en el principio ella vio con buenos ojos ese viaje es retiro de su marido una serie de circunstancias la llevaran a tomar decisiones drásticas en su vida y su matrimonio.
Los personajes que hacen está historia interesante son: Kiyoko, la Señora Yoshikawa, O- Hide y Kobayashi, ya que cada uno tiene su conexión particular con este joven matrimonio, el cual vivirá en una tensión constante que va desde Tokio hasta el hotel o Villa en las montañas. Considero que es una historia que te mantiene con deseos de saber que va a pasar y no querer que termine.
Cómo dato extra está edición tiene varias notas a pie de página sobre palabras japonesas que complementa el conocimiento del lexico y que significan (algo que agradezco). Recomiendo mucho está historia y bueno maravillado de al fin poder leer a Minae Mizumura.
