Title: Eye of the Storm: Where Family Secrets and Federal Corruption Collide
Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟 (4/5)
Genre: Thriller, Suspense, Mystery
Setting: Louisiana Gulf Coast
Trigger Warnings: Violence, corruption, family trauma
Hurricane Secrets by T.R. Sloane reads like a perfect storm of everything I love in a thriller, complex family dynamics, atmospheric setting, and a conspiracy that feels disturbingly plausible. This latest novel proves that sometimes the most dangerous storms aren't the ones you can see coming on the weather radar.
What Worked: The Louisiana setting is absolutely phenomenal. Sloane doesn't just describe the Gulf Coast; they make you feel the oppressive humidity, smell the salt air, and hear the wind picking up speed as Hurricane Eliza approaches. The po'boy shack feels like a character in its own right, steeped in family history and carrying the weight of generations of dreams and struggles. 🌊
June Sawyer is exactly the kind of protagonist I root for, resourceful without being superhuman, vulnerable without being helpless. Her transformation from someone who's drowning in circumstances beyond her control to someone who refuses to go down without a fight feels authentic and earned. The way Sloane uses June's knowledge of Gulf waters (taught by her father) as both literal and metaphorical navigation through danger is brilliant storytelling.
The conspiracy elements hit that sweet spot between believable and shocking. The cartel connections and federal corruption don't feel like over-the-top thriller territory, they feel like headlines we might read tomorrow. The fifteen year timeline adds layers of complexity that keep you guessing about who knew what and when.
What Could Be Stronger: Some of the pacing in the middle section felt slightly uneven, with a few moments where the momentum stalled just when I wanted it to accelerate. There were also a couple of coincidences that felt a bit too convenient, though nothing that completely broke my suspension of disbelief.
The Verdict: This is the kind of book that makes you cancel plans because you absolutely cannot put it down. Sloane has created something special here. A thriller that honors its Gulf Coast setting while delivering genuine surprises and emotional depth. The final act builds to a crescendo that rivals any hurricane's fury, and the resolution feels both satisfying and earned. 📚
For readers who love atmospheric thrillers with strong sense of place (think Tana French's atmospheric mysteries or Lisa Gardner's psychological suspense), Hurricane Secrets delivers on every level. This is another solid addition to Sloane's growing catalog of compelling thrillers.
Perfect for fans of: Gillian Flynn, Lisa Gardner, Tana French
Buddy read friendly: Yes, lots to discuss!
Reread potential: High:/ I suspect there are clues I missed the first time through
Thank you to T.R. Sloane and VoraciousReaders for the gifted copy of this book. I was happy to leave my honest opinion. Woo Hoo!
What impressed me about this book was its consistency from beginning to end. The plot unfolds at a consistent pace without it dragging out or feeling rushed. Even though this book doesn't have the unexpected highs some other books create its consistent execution made this an enjoyable read. I definitely recommend this book to readers that an enjoy a good story that holds your attention from the first page to the last.
Let me just say this loud and proud: June Sawyer is that woman—messy past, broken legacy, but the kind of fire-in-her-belly determination that makes you root for her before she even opens her mouth. This book didn’t just give me a thriller—it gave me a storm-drenched, jaw-clenching, Southern-soaked mystery that dragged me in from page one and didn’t let up until the last wave crashed. This isn’t your typical treasure hunt. Oh no. When a strange compass key shows up, it doesn’t just unlock a hidden fortune—it throws June headfirst into the ghost of her father’s dark legacy, and damn, it’s twisty. The layers of this story? Think gumbo—rich, dark, and simmering with danger. Old money secrets, crime syndicates, ghost boats (yes, ghost boats), and a conspiracy that smells like saltwater and betrayal. And let’s not forget the hurricane roaring in like a beast. I felt that storm coming—felt the tension in the air, the pressure in my chest, the dread pooling in my stomach. T.R. Sloane writes the Louisiana coast like a character in itself—beautiful, brutal, and absolutely unforgiving. Then there’s the stranger. The dangerous, not-quite-trustworthy ally who might be June’s only shot at surviving what’s coming. Their dynamic? Tense. Charged. Deliciously uneasy. I lived for every reluctant step they took together and every secret that changed the game. Spice level: None in the traditional sense, but the emotional heat? Boiling. Suspense level: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Enough to keep me up reading way too late and side-eyeing the weather channel. Vibes: Gritty bayou noir with a fierce heroine and secrets deep enough to drown in. Hurricane Secrets is Southern Gothic meets high-stakes thriller—with a lead I’d follow into the eye of the storm. This book gave me found courage, buried truth, and a heroine who’s barely holding it together but still pushing forward like hell. If you like your mysteries tangled, your setting dripping with danger, and your heroines messy but mighty, then buckle up—June Sawyer’s just getting started. T.R. Sloane, you’ve got a new fan. And if book two isn’t in my hands soon, I might just go treasure hunting myself.
An enthralling book as the storm intensified so did the tension carrying me along with it . reading into the small hours . i felt every drop of rain and every gust of wind , wonderfully described the scenery and the characters came alive for me .
Hurricane Secrets is The Rescuers meets The Da Vinci Code.
In this treasure hunt set in Louisiana in the midst of a hurricane, T.R. Sloane ratchets up the tension until the reader is immersed in a fast-paced whirlwind.
With high stakes and impossible odds, the heroine and her sick mother flee ruthless criminals in a tiny watercraft, while hunting for clues to bring them down. Each new discovery ratchets up the stakes, but in this fresh take on the treasure hunt genre, each morsel of new information also peels back another layer of the protagonist’s dark family history. Friends are exposed as enemies and enemies revealed to be friends as more and more secrets come to light. The antagonists become increasingly sinister foes as the story progresses and their motives are revealed.
The hidden gem in this novel is the sense of place. Rather than leaning into clichéd portrayals of the American South—with overdone Cajun accents or caricatures straight out of Deliverance—Sloane seamlessly conveys an authentic sense of the life and lore of those who earn their crust on small watercraft amid the whirls and eddies of the Bayou.
If there’s one area that might trip up some readers, it’s the pacing. Like a hurricane itself, the book begins with a period of calm before the storm and ends with a slow fade, clearly setting up the sequel. These lulls in the action bookend the explosive middle, which is where the story is at its most gripping with relentless action and clever clues. Each chapter frequently ends in a cliffhanger. Put on your life vest and strap in for the ride. A book recommended for fans of adventure, mystery, and Southern intrigue.
Fast paced thriller, had me turning pages. The author jumps into the action right away and keeps the excitement coming. Nice change with a female lead who is NOT the damsel in distress. I can't wait to read the next story in the series! I was given a complimentary copy of the book from the author via voracious readers only.
Enjoy the book from start to finish. Short novel so it makes for a quick read. Easy read, intriguing plot kept you interested. Will be looking into others books.
