Meet the Detective Detective Rachel King runs on cold coffee, sharp instinct, and the kind of chaos only two teenage daughters and a toddler son can unleash. She’s seen more corpses than candlelit dinners and is far better at catching killers than keeping relationships alive. Rachel lives in jeans and a battered coat, and her idea of self-care is deleting texts from the ex she never stopped loving . . . who happens to live next door. She’s good at her job and gets results but can occasionally make mistakes — and falling for a budding criminal as a teen is one mistake that still haunts her.
The Setting East Manchester was once the city’s industrial heart — now it’s a sprawl of crumbling warehouses, dead ends, and buried secrets. By day, Detective Rachel King chases killers through its unforgiving streets for Ancoats CID, where sirens wail, and the line between victim and villain blurs fast. By night, she returns to the supposed calm of Poynton, ten miles away on the edge of the Peak District — where chaos wears the faces of her two teenage daughters and a toddler. The pressure never lets up, and in both worlds, Rachel’s just trying to stay one step ahead.
I have reviewed the first two books in this series and for some reason felt I had to read the rest as I bought them as a set. I kept hoping that Rachel King would start to appeal to me but I found her as irritating by the end as I did at the beginning. I can't be bothered to review 3-6 separately so this is a summing up. I just found the books very predictable. Incompetent, and in one case corrupt, superiors, a main character who moans all the way through and no real surprises as to the villains. My only reason for reading to the end was to find out what happens with Jed, but really it wasn't worth it. I'm assuming there may be a 7th book but I doubt I'll read it if there is. sorry, but it wasn't really for me.
These books are about DCI Rachel King and her team. She loves Jed, an ex from University, she is divorced, her ex husband lives next door and they both co parent the kids. But is that really it? She is one lady who doesn't give up, she gets the scent and like a hound keeps going following all leads to find the relevant killer. There are the usual problems, bent coppers or those who cannot see the woods for the trees, but is being a copper for always what she really wants? At one point it was, but as she returns after maternity leave and the drive to and from work takes a long time, has her priorities changed? Read the books to get a good few crime mysteries solved. Highly recommended.
Thoroughly enjoyed reading this for a second time. Although I recognised some parts of each story, I was as committed as the first time to find out how each panned out. Housework definitely suffered 😉
Absolutely brilliant detective story's I loved everyone of these books Ratchel King is such a feisty character keeps things very exciting and Elwyn her side kick keeps her grounded a .must read.
Really enjoyed these books. Great story lines. I felt I knew the characters and most were likeable. Making it more pleasant to read and to care about them. Made them real.
Not for me. Picked this up as a bargain offer but already by chapter 4 had enough. Perp pov is a pet peev, just hate it, and that was in 2 of the first few chapters. Plus, felt no engagement with King as a character.
At first wasn't to keen on the book. It pulled you in. I liked the storyline, half love story and half mystery. Would recommend this series. Its a must read.
