After not loving book one in this series (thus me dragging my feet to crack open this arc...sorry Ms. Zaires, I feel badly about that), I was still hopeful for the second installment. But alas, it didn't improve much for me, sadly. I just didn't feel the connection between the two main characters and the world building felt less than know what I know Zaires is capable of.

I can't really put my finger on what was missing, so I will just leave it at that. Still looking forward to whatever Zaires releases next, as always.

Dark Prince's Mate is the conclusion to Aruan and Elsie's story. This was an excellent sequel that not only captivated my attention—due to all of my burning questions, but Anna Zaires and Charmaine Paul also gave us some incredibly spicy and heartfelt scenes for their journey's end. I want to note that this book picks up immediately after Dark Prince’s Captive so I recommend reading that first before picking up this one. Although Aruan and Elsie still had their issues in the first half of the book, the way they were able to resolve it and come to terms with their growing feelings for each other made for a satisfying conclusion to their story. However, it was still frustrating to see Elsie continue to fight her feelings for Aruan but he was also at fault for being too uncompromising when it came to her safety. Their unwillingness to talk to each other made me want to shake them both. Thankfully, I was relieved when Aruan began to slowly change his ways and make concessions for Elsie's happiness.

“The man cradling me in his arms has a terrifying, godlike power, yet I’m not afraid of him. I see him for what he is: dangerous and beautiful, violent and imperfect. And mine. Above all, mine.”

In the end, Aruan made compromises that ultimately won him Elsie's heart. I thoroughly enjoyed their super steamy moments and seeing them "make up" after an argument. The love scenes were spicy and plentiful—which I appreciated because Aruan and Elsie's first time left them and readers disappointed. Prior to the completion of their bond, Aruan was extremely overprotective, overbearing, and stubborn. This clashed with Elsie's personality because she was independent, stubborn, and had modern sensibilities. Nevertheless, I was happy to see them finally talk and learn to love one another. The second half of the book was my favorite because we finally learn who the true mastermind of the kidnappings and attacks was. It made for an exciting turn of events, which also led Elsie to realize her feelings for Aruan and complete their mate bond. I highly recommend this duet to fans of Anna Zaires and Charmaine Pauls, especially if you like reading about the dark, brooding, and possessive hero and his feisty and highly independent heroine with plenty of spice as well.

Talk about heroes that say they're going to burn the world down! Auran is the very definition of dangerously devoted and I loved every second of it.

May be an image of fire tower and railroad

This sequel picks up immediately where the first book left off, and it wastes no time plunging back into the intense emotional fallout between Auran and Elsie. If you thought the drama and stakes were high before, buckle up. This time around, it’s heartbreak, rage, longing, and raw power all tangled into one explosive conclusion.

The heroine’s pain is palpable as she feels rejection at the worst possible moment, and her determination to escape feels totally earned. But of course, nothing is that simple when your mate is a superpowered prince who’d raze entire worlds to get you back. The tension between them is sharp and emotional, but when that passion flares again? Fireworks!

I loved how this book deepened not just the romance, but the world itself. New characters, secrets, and shifting alliances open the door to so many exciting possibilities and I really hope this isn’t the last we see of this universe. It’s rich with potential and crackling with energy.

May be an image of outer space

If you enjoy intense, emotional fantasy romance with high stakes passion, morally gray heroes, and heroines who refuse to back down, this is the duet for you. I devoured every page and now I’m just sitting here, waiting (impatiently) for more.

Audiobook: Narrators - CJ Bloom and Sebastian York

The audiobook version of this story is phenomenal. The narrators were amazing! They didn’t just read the book, they brought it to life. Their voices added depth, emotion, and tension in all the right places, turning an already gripping story into a full blown cinematic like experience. This performance makes it more intense, more immersive, and honestly…unforgettable.

May be an image of fire tower and railroad

Talk about heroes who’d burn the world down! Auran is dangerously devoted in the best way, and I loved every second of it. This sequel picks up right where book one ended and dives headfirst into the emotional wreckage between Auran and Elsie. The heartbreak, fury, longing, and sheer power wrapped into their bond makes for an explosive, high-stakes conclusion. Elsie’s pain and need for escape feel raw and real, but of course, nothing is easy when your fated mate is a prince capable of leveling entire worlds to get you back. Their chemistry is electric, and when it sparks again…fireworks!

Beyond the romance, the world expands beautifully in this installment. New characters, dangerous secrets, and shifting allegiances hint at an even larger story waiting to unfold, and I truly hope we return to this universe. It’s rich with possibility and teeming with magic, danger, and emotion. If you’re a fan of fantasy romance with intense passion, morally gray heroes, and heroines who fight back, this duet is a must read. I devoured it and am already desperate for more.

Book 2 starts with the events immediately after book 1.
The heroine who managed so well on her own before the Hero rescued her... NOT... runs straight into trouble.
To be fair she does quite well at the start, as she is more capable than at the start of book 1 but soon ends up back where she started as she doesn't know enough about the enemy to have taken them on.

There is alot of sex, body betrays me syndrome, this is down to the mate connection, the pull but the mind not actually agreeing.

No intimate scenes other than the Hero and heroine and no other woman or man drama.

The world building is good, exotic plants and animals and the ALIT species explanation is clever.

I just feel that if you are going to have an alien planet and race that needs to be followed through. So we have the Hero and his race say things like 'on dragons breath' using things in their culture as expressions then the Hero says ' she's a great kid' which is so human to say.
I know at the point that he says this he's learnt English but it happens before with him asking for an explanation on some things but saying other stuff that's so English.
I just felt I was a bit job half done which was a shame when you go to the trouble of having huge cultural, environmental differences, like no science and education as we know it and abilities then they call their young kids.
And maybe that's super critical but I've read lots of alien romance, even fluff ones and Ruby Dixon for example does an excellent job with the language and misunderstandings and comparisons.

The other issue I had was there are attempts made on the heroine's life and I knew who was behind it in book 1. Its supposed to be a mystery.
The reasons they don't figure it out are quite clever but I felt it was really obvious. I suppose it's difficult to give enough away that's it's still a mystery and give enough red herrings.

Book needs to be read as a duet.

HEA.
Epilogue.

Secondary characters that could have own books.
History revealed about the heroine's past and possibilities of exploring characters there with a whole different whole building.
I'd actually be interested in a prequel about his parents.

The Realm of Dragons and Scrolls transports me to a world where magic, science fiction, and dinosaurs collide - satisfying all my favourite childhood fantasies, but with some very x-rated upgrades!

Elsie finally realizes her Alit powers and summons, Betty, her quetzalcoatlus friend, to make her great escape. Elsie’s triumph is over all too quickly when she is captured by slave traders and deeply regrets leaving Zerran Crown Prince Aruan, her dubious fated mate but definite protector. Will the feisty pair be able to overcome the lost time and broken feelings that divide them? What about the sabotage that continues unchecked within the palace?

I love the second half of Elsie and Aruan’s story, finishing it even faster than the first half. There’s more action, more character growth, and inevitably more sexy times. I always enjoy a strong heroine, so Elsie’s ingenuity and curiosity appeal to me. I’m pleased that she asks questions about the Alits’ “powers” and tries to deduce scientific explanations for them. As a result, some world-building gaps from the first book get addressed, but there remain more that are not. This aspect, as well as the obvious villain reveal, leaves it a 4 star read. However, I feel that the stage is set for Aruan’s royal siblings to get stories, too, so perhaps we will someday find out the origins of the Earth and Zerra connection and the purpose of the “scrolls.” A HEA for Elsie and Aruan will keep me warm until then.

3.5 stars!!

Such a fantastic fantasy world—so creative and full of surprises! The twists and turns kept me on my toes from start to finish. I’m really hoping Aruan’s siblings get their own stories (especially Vitai—fingers crossed!). The second half of the story ratchet up the suspense level! Elsie was so strong and determined!

A must-read for fantasy lovers!

I can't believe this is over 😭 I didn't expect to love this story and become this invested. This was a really solid continuation of the last book and touched on a lot of what I wanted from it 🥲.

Having said that, I definitely think that the weakest aspect of the story as a whole was its vagueness, which applied to both the fantasy and romance. I feel like this story and world are such an interesting take on a common trope, and that AZ and CP made something with SO much potential. I was left with so many questions about the world itself, and feel like so much more could have been done with it.

With the romance, I loved their dynamic at times, but they never really got the time to fully flesh out, like I said above. There was just a lot of back and forth, so when things finally got to a good point, the story just ended 😭.

As a whole, I really ended up enjoying this story. And that epilogue was just so sweet. I genuinely wish that both books were longer because there's so much potential here, but all in all I had fun 🙂‍↕️.

Elsie is slowly coming to terms with her new life. Shes at a crossroad where she misses her old life and family and is really trying to give this new one a chance.
The bond can’t be complete until she falls in love with Aruan.. his only wish.

“Her body wants me, but her mind doesn’t. As for her heart, I’m not sure she’ll ever open that part of herself to me. Because she didn’t choose me. Nature made that choice for her. For us.”

Someone is trying to kill Elsie. Someone doesn’t want this bond to complete and it’s a race against time to figure out who it is.

Just how far will Aruan go to prove his love for Elsie?

This is the conclusion to their love story. Yes to an HEA.

If you love fated mates, spice, action, minimal politics and uncomplicated world building. It’s a fun, fast duet story!

Elsie spends a lot of time becoming accustomed to her powers and trying to figure out where she belongs. Her relationship with Aruan is challenging. He can be kind and caring one minute and then controlling and demanding the next. Are his actions strictly out of duty or does he have true feelings for her? Not only is Elsie trying to navigate this new life, but someone is still trying to kill her. Enjoyed Aruan and Elsie's story. A good fantasy is the perfect way to cleanse the palate and enter a different world.

Love, love, LOVED Dark Princes Mate.

Elsie is adamant she is not Aruan's Mate. She wants so badly to return to earth that she uses her new found powers to escape with the dinosaurs/ dragons. Aruan is determined not to let her go, ever.

After failing to escape back to earth Elsie starts to learn that living in Zerra with Aruan might not be that bad.

I loved reading this duet. These two authors created a fantastic world for us to read. Elsie and Aruan have a beautiful love story as well. I enjoyed everything about this story

I definitely recommend this duet 👌

I couldn't stop reading this. I figured out early on who the traitor was, so I was combing through as I read for the hints and whether the protagonists were picking up on them. I enjoyed the mating bond not completing fully complication, it definitly added complexity to some situations. It was good to get more insight into the protagonists and side chatacters, but like the first book I did feel I wanted more world building.

It was gratifying to read the epilogue and see a glimpse of Elsie and Aruan's future together.

Overall I enjoyed the series.

Not a big fan.

I like Elise and the world. I love a fated mates trope, but (*spoilers*) this felt like non consent. I don't like Aruan's attitude about Elise at all. I almost didn't read this book because of it. I was uncomfortable for every early scene of their forced mating. He's a loose cannon in the most dangerous way. He is that stereotypical guy who punches walls in a fight. His character was the biggest dry pill to swallow in this book. Everything else was fun and great. I would read another book by this author if the main guy isn't this type.

This second book picks back up where we left off previously and right from the onset it set a faster pace than its predecessor. We also get to discover so much more about Elsies new home on Zerra which was appreciated.

I liked this a lot it was imaginative well written and an easy read. I liked all of the included side characters and though i had my suspicions on who the villain was, which proved correct it didn’t detract any from my enjoyment.

There is great scope for a future series and i’d definitely be on board to read more books set in this colourful world. Overall this has been a great duet and if you appreciate the fated mate trope like me then this should be right up your street. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of Dark Princes Mate.

Sumptuous and daring, Dark Prince’s Mate checks all the right boxes and left me feeling satisfied.
Book two continues where book one left off, with Elsie fleeing Aruan’s chambers with the hope of returning back to Earth. But the Phaelix are cruel and the humans have been recaptured. Elsie’s only hope is to rebel against the slave traders who have captured her with the other humans and find a way back to earth!
It’s a compelling journey filled with some court intrigue and family betrayal.
While the matting bond between Aruan and Elsie click into place? Can Elsie live in Zerra never to return home again?

You have to read and find out!

I don’t know what happened… this was so hard to get by. It was painful and I wanted to DNF so many times, but out of respect I dragged myself through.

Everything was too simplistic, too on surface, too vague, too everything negative. It felt like reading every single headline in the paper, never delving into the details.

I felt nothing for the characters
I felt nothing for the world
I felt nothing for the side characters
I felt bored with the simplistic world building

Cherry on top was how the mate bond was scientifically described and reasoned by h. It took all the romance and special kind of love out of the story.

Dark Prince’s Mate by Anna Zaires and Charmaine Pauls is Book 2 of A Realm of Dragons & Scrolls Series. This continues the story of Aruan and Elsie that started in the First book "Dark Prince's Captive". So you will need to read that to fully enjoyed this book. Elsie is working to adjust to her new life and that of being around Aruan. This is such a good story. Enjoyed

I mean the first book was okay, I read the second one in hopes it would get better, but feel like this could've been one book If I'm honest. Very dissapointing read.

The world building was okay. I must say it's different from what I've read before. This is my first time reading alien related romance. It's just got a bit confusing with all the different type dinosaurs and having to constantly google them to actually imagine how they looked like. Also, its this weird alien race, so why call them dragons and not something different and alien like?

I love a fated mate concept but this is the second book I've read recently where the MCs are fated mates, fuck and fall in love without actually getting to know each other. In the second book there's a little character development, but it also feels unrealistic. I just couldn't connect with either of them.

The MMC was just a hotheaded asshole in my opinion. Doesn't consider her feelings or situation at all. Very cave man.

FMC had potential but was irritating overall. I understand the fated mate concept that she couldn't resist him, but I still feel like there wasn't nearly enough resistance, granted the situation she was in and how much she hated him in the beginning. In the beginning of the second book when she escapes and takes on the Phaelix with her powers I was like FINNALY she's going to grow some backbone, but no. Same situation as the first book, kidnapped, almost SA, gets saved in the nick of time and just goes back to fucking him. I also feel like a lot of the conflict would have been avoided had they actually just talked! What an idea... She states she doesn't want to have kids, he cums in her regardless, she lets it slide and later he's like, okay I won't do it anymore and she's so moved and greatful. WTF!!!

Also in the end she sort of comes to terms of never leaving Zerra and finally gets to meet her biological aunt and uncle, goes to there kingdom, says how she feels so at home, all in about 3 pages??? They literally arrive and the next chapter they're back in Lona. Like WTF we learn nothing about where she's born, the people, their different customs, culture, NOTHING.

Idk it's 2 in the morning and I'm so frustrated I decided to write my first review. I really hope my next book is much better.

It was decent

I do not think this book needed to be broken up into two books. The story was simple enough it could have stayed a book. The world building is nice, the spice was okay. The story had a happy ending. All my gripes are nothing, nor would they stop the enjoyment of the story.

I do not think the story went deep enough emotionally. Longer scenes pushing or reaching deeper would have been better. I like how inquisitive the MFC was, but the facts or theories she develops do not lead anywhere. It would have been a better story if things like the temple with the video played more into the over all story; at best, they were background characters, there to move the story, but there no large role.

It would have been a nicer story if we got to know the families better. The parents and siblings popped in and out with no real emotional ties, just an assumption of them. We they do play a role in the story it is simple to use them and then dump them. I hated the starts and stops, like the teasing of Earthling being interested in our of the brothers, and then nothing develops. Even if this was a tease for a new story, there should have been more. The found family for the MFC played such a small role, too. It would have been better to create some actions while visiting. The reader did not even get to go to the celebration that was thrown or feel the connection the MFC lost because she was living on Earth.

Mainly, what I am saying is that the story is too surface level. The writers needed to dig deep and write more to connect the story with to all its' pieces instead of bypassing what they did not want to write. At times, it felt like a series kind of story, where every month, they added a new chapter and forgetting the details they put in a month before. They got so many stars out of me because they created a world I had never visited before. I got to experience a new journey. The romance by itself needs work, but the adventure was fun. The writers can hone theirs skills and get the parts I think needs work right, but you cannot really learn the world building that is just in you or its' not.

The second installment in this duet is filled with action, revelations, and deep emotions. Elsie, still overwhelmed with confusion, flees from her mate, Aruan, in a fit of anger. Her escape triggers a chain reaction that not only puts her life at risk but also leads to the discovery of the Phaelix slave trade. As she grapples with her newly emerging powers and the desire to save the humans, a tragic incident occurs, once again putting her in danger. Aruan shows his wrath while desperate to save Elsie once more.
Their reunion is intense, and as they return to Aruan’s world, Elsie’s human side of the story comes into focus. Her desperation for a connection with her family adds emotional depth, but this is quickly overtaken by a larger mission, a bold plea to the queen to save human lives and to give Elsie the closure she desperately needs. However, danger still lurks. As the villain sets a trap, the question remains: Will Elsie fall for it, and can Aruan protect her one last time with limited strength to keep the portal open between their two worlds? Can they find their HEA?
One of the more intriguing elements was the author’s exploration of AI, transhumanism, and ancient scrolls, which was thought-provoking and unexpected, adding philosophical weight to the plot. However, while the world-building was vivid and the writing strong, I found the romantic chemistry between Elsie and Aruan lacking. The story followed a somewhat predictable path, and Elsie’s behavior felt immature at times, especially considering her background and the gravity of her human illness. For someone given a miraculous second chance, her emotional growth felt stilted. Though sci-fi, aliens, and interplanetary politics aren’t typically my genre, I appreciated the effort and imagination behind this world. The supporting characters were fascinating. Overall, while Dark Prince’s Mate wasn’t quite my cup of tea, it was still an entertaining, well-crafted read.

Dark Prince's Mate is the second and final book about Elsie & Aruan, fated mates. Please see my review of book one, Dark Prince's Captive, for details on my thoughts, as nearly everything I said in my review of book one applies to this book as well, and I can't expand much on that without spoilers.

The TL/DR (ok this is still TL lol) of that review, which applies here to, is:

*Always, always appreciate the clean, intelligent writing and editing of these authors
*Fantasy that reads almost more sci-fi to me, especially during some sections (I prefer more complex, epic, high fantasy reads in my fantasy)
*Despite the above, there is something to be said for the easy, quick readability of this duet, as well as the predictability which was high, but also mostly comforting
*World-building: there is a decent amount about some stuff in the world, but not enough about other aspects that I wanted to read about more
*Fates mates trope: another thing that is not my fave, and though I felt the emotional connection of their romance a little bit more in the second book than I did the first it wasn't by much. There were more steamy scenes in this one too, but since I didn't feel their chemistry/heat those were kind of meh to me too, which is unusual for me with these authors
*More than the romance/main couple, I enjoyed the different powers held by the Alit and their uses of it, and the royalty in-fighting
*Groundwork is laid for potential spin-off books about other characters, I'd be most interested in reading about Kian and how his interesting power (and personality) kind of puts people off, how would that manifest with a love interest?

So, kind of a mixed bag for me. Not my favorite by these authors, but I didn't dislike it either, despite the negative items outlined above. Maybe try a sample and see if the series draws you in.

Fantasy, dragons, dinosaurs, human-like aliens with unbelievable (but very convenient) super powers, demon-like lizard people, alternate realms... NOT my usual go-to-genre... not at all! 🤪 But, I like Charmaine Pauls' writing and I wanted to see what these books were about. Surprisingly... (especially to myself!) I really liked the story! {Ut las gewoon lekker weg!} 😆 Don't know exactly why... but Dark Prince’s Captive and Dark Prince's Mate just worked for me! Sometimes that's just how it is.... 😆

My rating: 4.5 stars.

I’m not sure how to feel about this book. I guess it was okay. Not great but fine - I did almost DNF but pushed through it.

This is about a world called Zerra and it’s a parallel universe from earth.

In Zerra, people are called Alits and they have powers. The story started with Elsie dying in a hospital before she was kidnapped by a colorful circular lights and was later found out to be a portal. She landed in the jungle with humanoid lizards called Phaelix. In Zerra, dinosaurs lives and insects and animals are often twice bigger than it was on Earth.

These lizards were taking humans from earth to make as their slaves. When Elsie/Laliss landed on Zerra, Aruan (Prince) and also his mate felt her arrival. Aruan was under the impression that Elsie was dead and so he asked his sister Gaia to open portals and search for Elsie within their kingdom.

Aruan is known for his godlike powers. There was also a prophesy indicating that an Alit so powerful will destroy Zerra bc of his mate. This prophesy was what drove Aruans mom to banish Elsie to earth. When Aruan found Elsie, he basically just forced himself on her since she was his mate. A lot happened with her trying to escape them being auctioned only for Aruan saving the day. Believers of the prophesy hated Elsie and therefore a few attempts on her life. Later on, they found out it was all Tarix - aruan’s cousin and the queens advisor.

The story ended in capturing Tarix and Elsie and Aruan having a baby girl.

Dark Prince's Mate by Anna Zaires and Charmaine Pauls brings the explosive ending of Aruan and Elsie's story. Get ready to lose yourself in the mysterious Zerra with dinosaurs, magic and royalty. Elsie found her powers and she went through a heart wrenching journey to accept her bond with her mate, the dark prince. Aruan will destroy everyone and burn down everything to save and protect his mate, even when she is rejecting their bond. He is an epic alpha "antihero". This finale is packed with action, suspense and twists. It's also heavy with heartbreaking and swoony emotions. The chemistry is nuclear hot. You won't be able to put it down.

This is book 2 or a duet and must be read in order. Elsie went from being a frail dying human to being kidnapped as slave to being claimed as mate by an alien prince. It's pure chaos. She was torn and lost and dealing with so many contrasting emotions. She didn't want to fall for the dark prince. But Aruan made it so difficult. I loved how he can be all possessive and demanding and controlling but how he can also show his softness for Elsie only. Their push and pull was insane. He was trying his best to win her heart. He was battling a lot of frustration, heartbreak and helplessness but he was still being patient. Their chemistry wasn't an issue. It was earth moving planets realignining kind of explosive. It was Elsie's heart that was stopping them from completing their mating. I loved how Elsie evolved as a character. She embraced her true identity. She got control over her power. She accepted her own feelings. They fought together at the end to beat the enemies. Aruan is just so intense about his mate and I loved all of it.
