A translation and reprint of Buddhist monk Takuan Soho's legendary book on Zen and the Sword. Since it was written 400 years ago Takuan's book has influenced martial artists from Miyamoto Musashi to Funakoshi Gichin. This version of Takuan's book was published in 1883 and was based on a transcription of an original held in the archives of Zenrin Temple in Tokyo. The publisher was a friend of the master swordsman and calligrapher Yamaoka Tesshu, who helped to prepare the work for publication by comparing the copy held at Zenrin Temple with his own copy, resulting in book that combines two versions of the original. [Yamaoka Tesshu] also produced his own copy of this book from his archives and we compared it my edition. Working with him, we made some corrections and notations. The publication of this book is the result of that collaboration.
This book will also include a translation of selections from the first volume of Bag of Ears by Negishi Shizumori. Bag of Ears contains an account of how Takuan met the sword master Yagyu Munenori. the archives of the Zenrin Temple
