Something old watches from the shadows of Crowford Library…
The year is 2014. When her estranged father turns up out of the blue, Donna knows better than to believe it’s just a social call. Keith has never been one for sentiment – especially when it comes to his daughter. Whatever brought him back to Crowford, it can't be good.
At the heart of town, the crumbling Crowford Library teeters on the edge of closure. Its last hope lies in a centuries-old painting said to be worth a fortune. But removing it may come at a price no one is prepared to pay. The locals whisper of Old Maggie, the ghost who guards the library’s secrets – and punishes those who threaten them.
As Donna digs into her father’s past and uncovers the painting’s dark history, she finds herself drawn into a chilling mystery that ties them both to something far older – and far more malevolent – than she ever imagined.
The dead don't rest quietly in Crowford.
The Ghost of Crowford Library is the eighteenth entry in the haunting Ghosts of Crowford series – a gripping tale of buried secrets, creeping dread, and the price of disturbing what should remain untouched. Each book in the series tells a standalone story and they can be read in any order.
Amy Cross writes novels and short stories in a number of genres, mainly horror, paranormal and fantasy. Books include The Farm, Annie's Room, The Island, Eli's Town and Asylum.
This story was, for the most part, so bad that it was (almost) quite good. If it was meant to be a comedy, it was a 4 star read, but if it was meant to be a serious thriller, then it was 2 stars.
The story did perk up towards the end when it became quite gruesome, and it did finish with a good and unexpected twist. Perhaps this is why so many readers awarded it a 4 and, in some cases, a 5 star rating. For me, though, it was a bit of a damp squid, especially when the rest of the Crowford series had been so good.
Cute ghost story that continues her series. Writing is lacking and needs work though.
I've been reading Amy for years and although her editing has greatly improved, there are some things that still need a great deal of work. One of those things is her tendency to not finish dialogue or some sentence. Some examples, taken from just a few consecutive pages, are below, to show how prevalent this tendency is. Once I picked up in this, it really impeded my ability to enjoy the story. She needs to complete this dialogue or not start it to begin with.
After noticing this, I read a book by another author and saw just how refreshing it is NOT to have a book FULL of this writing style. I really hope Ms. Cross takes this suggestion to heart as it's meant as only constructive criticism to help her improve. She has great ideas for stories, but these little things make it difficult to read.
Here are examples, taken from only about three consecutive pages to show how often this happens:
“I don't know what's going on but...”
it couldn't be possible, not unless he...”
And then he...”
Stop embarrassing yourself, you idiot. Stop humiliating yourself in front of...”
“It's every man and woman for -”
This is bullshit.” She took another step back. “This is -”
Donna's Dad was a criminal and had other plans than coming to see her after years of being gone. THE GHOST OF CRAWFORD series has been so much fun to read, with plenty of ghosts, good and bad. So tickled to see another book is on its way. I know the last one will be interesting to see how the soldiers handle ghosts and war games.
2.5 Donna and her dad are locked inside the library with a recently made ghost. original ghost story about the library was a fake story, so this book introduced the 1st actual ghost of the library. even tho the book wasn't that long the story dragged on for me. did not enjoy this read.
