As the author of books on embroidery design, the progression in 1994 from fact to fiction was perhaps less daunting for Juliet than it might have been for a complete beginner. But in many ways, the requirements are similar: a strong imagination and sense of design; an eye for detail; a love of color, scenery, and research; and a willingness to share inner thoughts and feelings with readers. Dedication is also useful to Juliet, living in the country, as the temptation to spend time picnicking and sightseeing instead of writing is sometimes very strong.

An engaging and fast-paced historical romance, I had this one polished off very quickly. The heroine is a Brigantian princess captured by a high-ranking Roman and the novel follows their progress as they travel Britain in search of a missing official.

Landon paints an engaging portrait of a country occupied by outside invaders and yet still very much a Celtic nation. There's plenty of romance for the fans and the developing relationship between Brighid and Quintus is handled with sensitivity and a great deal of emotion. I found it to be both touching and moving in places.

Things really kick up a gear as the action shifts to some healing baths where a villainous plot comes into play and Landon spices the mix by adding in heaps of intrigue and danger. It all pays off come the end, making this a highly satisfying read.

I really enjoyed reading this romance set against the background of Roman Britian. The story shows historical insight and romance in beautiful detail. Brighid and her lover Quintus Tiberius Martial are really well brought out. Their complicated relationship together with the place of slaves, concubines and free British natives makes for an interesting story. I liked how the novel brought out the situation of gay men in Roman areas as opposed to their place in the tribes is shown in counterpoint. We also see how well the Romans lived in Britian, and how the natives who went Roman prospered and thrived under Roman occupation. I also enjoyed reading about the better Roman emperors, Septimus Severus.

4.5 Stars. This is the best historical romance I have read to date set in the ancient world. Well done, Ms. Landon! The narrative, the description of the setting, and the male POV reflect the history in a way that resonates with what I think and know about the Romans and their views of the "barbarians."Added bonus that the Tribune/Quintus is super hot!

Historical romance between a Roman ex cavalry officer and a captive Briganti princess set during the reign of Severus.

Our hero Quintus has retired from the army due to a knee injury. The emperor sends him to Aquae Sulis with the ruse of going to heal his knee - but he's really to investigate a missing tax officer, suspected forgery ring and to track down a native chief's son suspected of plotting to raise an army of rebels against the emperor. He has to take princess Brighid with him to smoke out the enemy chief who was supposedly in marriage negotiations with her now dead father... Of course on the journey the pair fall in love, but a Roman with a senatorial career in front of him cannot marry a barbarian.

The plot and setting on this one are fantastic. Anyone who like Roman crime fiction such as Lindsey Davis will find enough in the plot to keep them interested. The Roman world is well realised and researched and I felt I was there. I also like the heroine Brighid - she's pretty spirited and sympathetic.

What lets this one down for me is the romance side of things and the hero - Quintus is a solid enough hero but romantic he is not, He keeps things very close to his chest. He doesn't tell Brighid her father is dead, or that he loves her and what his plans for her are. He seems more suited to be the hero of a crime novel than a romance - I just didn't feel him.

The romantic ending as well feels a bit forced and rushed - It also annoyed me that his thoughts didn't turn to Brighid until after he'd cleared up the villain/investigation plot. While that is realistic it doesn't make for the most romantic of love stories.

There's also a sub-romance between Brighid's younger brother who follows his sister and falls for Quintus' personal Masseur Florian. Would have liked him to have a more useful role than getting kidnapped by the villains at one point, and actually help his sister, but its still nice to have positive representation of gay characters.

Over all though I really enjoyed this, even if the plot did slightly overshadow the romance for me. If you want Ancient World romance this isn't half bad.
