Fans of Hallmark movies set in small towns with quirky characters will enjoy this kisses-only romantic comedy duet - a pair of connected stories with shared characters set in fictional Mermaid Bay, Oregon.
Prequel: Love & Lattes at the Mermaid Cafe First, meet the woman who revitalized the Mermaid Cafe ten years ago. She and others in town created The Mermaid Bay Legacy Tour to discourage developers from coming in and buying up land. So far, the tour has worked. Good thing, too. When a new real estate developer arrives, it's all hands on deck to convince him this town is off limits. But instead of dollar signs, this man might just find...love.
Main Story: The Mermaid Cafe's Guide to Dating a Bad Boy Finally, meet the coffee baristas who work in the Mermaid Cafe. Or rather one coffee barista in particular, who's going to learn what it takes to win the heart of the town bad boy.
Prior to writing romance, award-winning, USA Today Bestseller Melinda Curtis was a junior manager for a Fortune 500 company, which meant when she flew on the private jet she was relegated to the jump seat—otherwise known as the potty. After grabbing her pen (and a parachute) she made the jump to full-time writer. Between writing sweet romance and sweet romantic comedy, Melinda finds time to bond with her husband over home remodeling projects. She recently came to grips with the fact that she’s an empty nester and a grandma, concepts easier to grasp than jet-setting on a potty.

The Mermaid’s Guide to Dating the Bad Boy special collection with the prequel, Love & Lattes at the Mermaid Café by Melinda Curtis. This is a wonderful introduction to the mystical, magical town of Mermaid Bay where land developers are not welcome and love is. There are two sweet novellas in one, providing the reader with happiness, love, and mermaid dreams.
Love & Lattes at the Mermaid Cafe is the prequel to the series about taking chances and unexpected love. Ten years ago, Lena bought the Mermaid Café, she isn't looking for love or to sell her business. She and the other business owners along the boardwalk have discouraged the occasional big real estate investors by taking them on what they call The Mermaid Bay Legacy Tour, and it has turned out to be a very effective method of driving those would be investors away.
Out-of-towner Cade walks into the cafe only to eventually realize that the small coastal town in Oregon, and all its quirky inhabitants, one in particular, have a lot more to offer than proving his worth to his father; convincing the business owners in Mermaid Bay to sell. He doesn't expect the sparks that fly when he meets Lena, and Lena is determined to fight her interest in Cade. Now both must decide if love is worth taking a chance. With fun characters, a surprise twist in the plot, and a happy ending this book was highly entertaining and I couldn’t put this book down.
The Mermaid Cafe's Guide to Dating a Bad Boy is about second chances with high school crushes. Ivy is the typical overachiever nerd, working two jobs, while looking for her parents' approval. She has hopes and dreams of leaving Mermaid Bay to attend college and have a successful career. Her life takes an unexpected turn when Hank, her high school crush and the school bad boy asks for her help.
Back in high school, Hank struggled in school and was tutored by Lena; whom he had a crush on but never acted on his feelings because he felt unworthy. Now adults, Hank agrees to be Lena's hot date to her ex's wedding if she will help him prepare for a promotional test at work. Reconnecting brings new chances for old feelings to grow if they can change their way of thinking.

This sweet, clean novella opens with the retelling of a mermaid legend, the bittersweet love story of Serena the mermaid and her fisherman. As the prequel, Love & Lattes at the Mermaid Cafe, begins, the reader is introduced to Lena, the owner of the Mermaid Café and a woman who refuses to ever date again after suffering two two divorces. Lena is content in her cafe until one day, forty-five year old widower and real estate developer Cade Delaney appears and wants to upend everything Lena has come to anchor herself upon. Lena will take Cade on the Mermaid Bay Tour where he’s going to meet the small coastal town’s business owners and have to answer a few riddles and stomach a few uncomfortable situations too. The cast of characters and the love story that develops makes this prequel a witty and romantic read all on its own. The second novella in this book is The Mermaid Cafe’s Guide to Dating a Bad Boy and the reader will soon realize that there’s been some changes at the Mermaid Cafe with Kiera the new owner and one of her employees is Ivy Adler a twenty-two year old overachiever. Ivy works two jobs and is attending grad school remotely with the over all need to make her parents recognize her accomplishments. But Ivy’s got a secret, she’s had a crush on the town’s bad boy, Hank Ferguson, ever since high school and he just walked into the cafe door. This novella is a sweet opposites attract with a little bit of ex-boyfriend angst and conflicts resulting with Ivy being geared for better things while Hank is still labeled as the town’s bad boy. There’s a big surprise at the end, leaving all kinds of openings for upcoming books. I received an Advance Review Copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

The Mermaid Cafe’s Guide to Dating a Bad Boy
Ivy has two jobs, she works at the Mermaid Cafe and at the local bar with dreams of leaving Mermaid Bay, Oregon in order to attend college and have a successful career. Her life takes an unexpected turn when Hank, her high school crush and the school bad boy asks for her help. I thought this was an absolutely wonderful and sweet romance and I just had to read it all the way through. A happy ending romance, and maybe just a little bit of mermaid magic at the end. I loved the Legend of Mermaid Bay at the beginning of these books and will gladly recommend it to others.

I enjoyed these two novellas very much! The town of Mermaid Bay is great! I love the interaction of the community. They look out for each other! We first get introduced to Lena and Cade. They are somewhat "older" and I really liked that aspect. Cade had come to town to buy real estate but after meeting Lena, his perspective changes quite a bit. He likes the small-town life and the quirky people he meets in Mermaid Bay. He's getting pressure from his father - what will be his decision? Will his budding romance with Lena sway his decision? Then we are introduced to Ivy and Hank. I adored both of these characters. They knew each other in high school and their personalities were pretty much sealed. Hank was the "bad boy" and Ivy was the brainiac. However, Ivy always had a crush on Hank and felt that it wasn't reciprocated. She's now finished with college, working two jobs and trying to get out of town to make her fortune. Hank just wants to get a promotion at his job so asks Ivy to help him. The sparks fly, just like they always have when they are together! I loved the background on these two as they let us peek inside their backstories!
What a perfect book to fit in with Love and Lattes at the Mermaid Cafe. We get to go back to my favorite Mermaid Cafe and sit on the sidelines to watch Ivy and Hank, who just happens to be her high school crush and one of the bad boys in town. The feelings are definitely zinging both ways in this story and I loved how Hank was enthralled with Ivy and just sort of spoke, not realizing what he said. His managerial test was a perfect lead into the two spending time together. Of course, we get to see Marina and listen to her two cents and thoughts on everything and I’ve also become very fond of Merry in this story as well. I really loved everything about this book and how everything turned out and how Hank shared his secret talent with Ivy and even her parents did a 360. I have to admit I wasn’t prepared for Keira and the epilogue. I would never have guessed or seen that twist coming and wondering if we’ll hear more on her and Devlin especially since I have a theory about him now. I’m also torn about the revelations we find out in this book in the epilogue. Definitely wondering if there’s more to come.
okay this is two novellas in one love and lattes at the Mermaid cafe and The Mermaid Cafe's Guide to dating a bad boy
love and lattes was a really cute, really short novella. he wants to buy the Town, she's trying to save it. Will they come to an agreement, which side will win, and will one or both of them fall for the other? I loved Cade's self assurance, he knows what he wants and he does everything in his powers to get it. even if it's not what he think he needs. Lena is a been there done/ seen that kind of girl, she doesn't let things surprise her... but she's surprised with how her feelings for Cade change in just a few hours.
the Mermaid Cafe's Guide to dating a bad boy has more emotion in it and is equally as short. there was a character i wanted to slap... but I loved Hank going through the emotions working with Ivy to come to an agreement that would help them both out.
I don't like novellas, I always want more story than they offer. however, that being said, this was really cute.
Two novellas. Mermaid Bay, Oregon is a small town with a mermaid legend. In the first story (Love & Lattes at the Mermaid Cafe) the business owners of Mermaid Bay have come up with a tour and a series of riddles to scare off property developers. No one before Cade has got beyond the second stop and twice divorced, commitment shy Lena is falling for him even whilst she is sure his plans will break her heart. A lovely gentle romance in a unique little town. The second story centres around a young couple who knew each other in high school but never got together despite having feelings for each other. Both have to let go of barriers they have placed around their hearts to protect themselves from hurt. It doesn’t hurt that they have a little help from some friends. A delightful novella. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
this is two novellas in one. Fun quick read in the magical town of Mermaid Bay. The small town brainiac Ivy and the bad boy Hank have always been attracted to each other, he felt like he wasn’t good enough to date her. They he comes to her to help with studying for a promotion and the sparks fly. I really enjoyed seeing them get to know each other better, encourage each other to be who they are. The way their romance grew was so sweet and swoony, a great, quick easy read.
Lena is the owner of the Mermaid Café when Cade comes in, she knows he just wants to come in and change the town. The towns people don’t what change so they make him go on a Legacy tour where they make Cade do some very crazy things, figure out riddles and other antics that made me laugh. This is a fun mid-life sweet romance that will make you smile! I really enjoyed this sweet novella.
The first novella is a cute, quick read. Lena has been through a lot and doesn’t want a man to interrupt what she has going for her. But when Cade walks through the doors of her café, she begins to rethink that idea. The town has a great plan for warding off real estate developers that made me laugh! Fun story with a parallel story that makes you wonder if Cade is correct! The second read is another quick read that continues after the first story. Bad boy Hank needs some help getting a promotion and he turns to Lena to help him. Having a crush on him since high school, Lena agrees to help with her own condition. They both need a date to Lena’s exes wedding so they make a deal. Falling fast seems to happen in Mermaid Bay, maybe there is some magic in the air! I hope we get more stories from Mermaid Bay!
Two fun stories with characters to make you smile This book brings together the prequel and a second story set in Mermaid Bay. Both are enjoyable with characters that will make you smile as you watch the small community pull together. The first, Love & Lattes at the Mermaid Café, introduces you to the community of Mermaid Bay that likes their community as it is. So, when they sense a threat, they band together with a community wide plan of defense. But what if the threat is won over instead? The second, The Mermaid Café’s Guide to dating continues the community’s story as two of its own struggle to determine their future and perhaps find that they are better together than apart. Two fun stories to enjoy.
This book contains two novella that are connected. The first story Cade a developer goes Mermaid Bay in hopes to make the quaint town a modern resort and Lena who takes Cade on a tour of the town and he meets the residents and shop owners who don't want the town to change.Cade and Lena are beginning to have feelings for each other. Will they be able to keep the town as it is. The second story is Ivy and Hanks story.Ivy and Hank met in high school and both had unhappy childhoods.Hank had been attracted to Ivy for a long time Ivy has been invited to her ex fiance's wedding so she asks Hank to take her and act like her boyfriend. Also Hank is keeping a secret. These two stories are heartwarming
Book was great. Two in one. In the first one Love&Lattes at the Mermaid Cafe. Lena is the owner of Mermaid Cafe when Cade walks in, and Marina dubs him as trouble. He wants a tour of Mermaid Bay, but it’s not without a purpose. Along the way he must do things. He learns something too. What exactly? Need to buy. Second book- the Mermaid Cafes Guide to dating Bad Boy- Ivy works at the Mermaid Cafe. She loves to see Hank come in to get his coffee. He was the bad boy in school. He says something to her and she’s taken back with his comment. He needs help, and she needs a date for her ex’s wedding.
Two novellas in one! What a deal and a fun read this was.
The first story Love & Lattes it’s about the mermaid Café and the relationship between Cade and Lena. Lena is the owner of the café and Cade has come to town to try to redevelop and modernize it. You will love the fun interaction between these two. What happens with Cade’s plans!?!? The second Novella The Mermaid Cafe’s Guide to Dating. I loved the interaction between the smart and shy Ivy and bad boy Hank. The attractions always been there. They just didn’t know how to act on it. I definitely enjoyed how Melinda set up their romance.
Thank you Melinda for this ARC in return for my honest review.
I enjoyed reading about Ivy and how she felt that she wasn't good enough in her parents eyes. Some of us have felt like that too. The one thing I like about Melinda Curtis's books is that you can relate to the characters and their situations.
Ivy went to school with Hank and had a secret crush on him. He had one on her too but she didn't know. Now that they are out of school he has asked her out and she gets to date the town's bad boy.
Check out the story and let me know what you think
This is my voluntary review of a copy I was given.
Both stories feature realistic characters in small-town romances.
I really enjoyed the first story. The characters are all older, and that plays into their motives and actions. They get to know each other as she shows him around town to meet the eccentric citizens and learn of the town's history.
In the second story, the characters knew each other in school and crushed on each other but never dated. They embark on a fake dating scheme to show up her ex. In the process they learn a few things about themselves and each other.
I really enjoyed these 2 stories. Mermaid Cafe is set in a small coastal town where everyone knows everyone else. The first story - Love & Lattes at Mermaid Cafe - is Lena and Cade’s love story. You get to know them and a bit of the back story of some of the main characters. The second story - The Mermaid Cafe’s Guide To Dating a Bad Boy - is about Ivy and Hank’s love story and falling in love with each other after knowing one another in high school. I really liked these end of this story as it reads like there could be more stories coming and I really liked these end these characters.
When Ivy needs a hot date for a former boyfriend's wedding, an old friend from high school fits the bill and offers her a trade. He'll be her wedding date if she will help him pass a test to become a supervisor at the lumber mill. Town meddling, an old jealous boyfriend, and many little coincidences lead to a delightful and surprising conclusion.
Awesome read!! Ivy and Hank's story. Local bad boy and overachiever Ivy team up to give her ex-boyfriend a "eat your heart out" at his wedding. This book deals with overcoming feelings of never being enough, trying to overcome preconceived impressions, and insecurities. Loved the ending. I look forward to the next book in the series. Thanks, Melinda.
You know, it really WAS like watching a Hallmark movie! To say these two (novella length) stories are adorable may fall short. Both stories are a great beginning, and intro, to what sounds like a – dare I say it? – magical town where anything can happen. Light, fun reads that I enjoyed.
This was an entertaining novella, a sweet romance set in a quaint coastal town. I thought the characters were described well especially since it was a novella. I would read more in this new series.
I received a free copy from the author and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
What a cute town with a mermaid legend, a bad boy and a coffee shop barista. The story is short but has all the feels of a longer novel. I really enjoyed reading it all in one sitting. I couldn't put it down.
I love this series with second chances at love and later in life characters. This book was shorter and an easy read but packed with laughter, love and charming characters. It's lighthearted, fun, wonderfully written and so entertaining. A story that reminds us to follow our hearts.
Second chances prevail at love over coffee at the Mermaid café. The barista and the bad boy will hit the soft spot in your romantic heart. It is a sweet enduring romance that will make you believe in happy endings.
Great romance novel that will make you smile and relax. Quirky small town characters and romance make this the perfect mix of a book to enjoy while relaxing. Fun to read. I received a copy of this book from the author. I am leaving a voluntary and honest review.
Super cute fast read! This needs a sequel asap! There's a little tiny cliffhanger at the end, not for the current couple, but hints at maybe another couple or some trouble in town. And I need to know!!
