you are mine, little flower. the rest of the world may fear me, but not you. you will never need to.
within a smattering of chapters, bound in violet ink contains cutting tension from a combination of obsessive affections and “touch her and die” vibes—my favourite—mixed with forbidden love. full of grit, bound in violet ink features darker elements with a hint of sweet fated mates, “he falls first and harder”, and hurt/comfort notes. there’s so much in this format, but the perfect combination of tropes is frankly too difficult to resist.
this short novella is consumable within a sitting of mere hours, but the deliverance is as devourable as any long-length romantasy. the slow exchange of letters between our leading characters, kane and victoria, was delectable due to the forbidden nature of it—kane, the unseelie high lord, is chained within the darkness of the seelie king’s prison, who focuses on the attentions of victoria, the adoptive daughter of the seelie king. the relationship between kane and victoria transforms from mere curiosity and the desperate need to be rebellious, into a relationship filled with desperation and obsession. while the spice is minimal, the gradual buildup towards the inevitable meet between kane and victoria is worthwhile.

the concept for this book is really cool, but unfortunately, it didn't work for me.
the idea of falling in love with someone through letters is inherently romantic, and i was really excited for that aspect of the book. however, this isn't really an epistolary novel like I was expecting; instead, it's a novella with like 4 mini letters.
because its so short, some explanations etc. were missing that would've made the book better. the characters are also cardboard cutout-y in that they are pretty flat and cliche. it's somehow both boring and too much at the same time.
unfortunately, though the book cover/art is stunning, the content wasn't for me :(

this is a forbidden romance with faes, daughter of a royal fmc + possessive high lord mmc, prison setting, love letters, angst, fated mates, captive, caged, fast paced, duo pov, introduction to new series 💜
victoria only ever knew the walls of the castle. when she was adopted, she thought she would finally feel like she belonged. but she was also prepared to be let down. being caged up in that tower her whole life, she longed for someone to show her what freedom feels like. so when she feels such a strong pull to write a letter to someone in the prison, she didn’t expect it to be the high lord everyone fears. kane is a broody and intelligent high lord. he has a plan while being a captive in this prison and he’s not going to stop until he gets what he wants. when he catches the scent of something … more like someone, his plans completely go out the window. they send letters back and forth but kane needs victoria to stop indulging in him. he fears that he’ll lose control and the moment he smelled her scent is heavier in one of her recent letters, he gave up on ever having control when it comes to victoria. now that she got tricked into going to the prison, kane does everything he can to make her realize that they’re fated mates and he will do anything to keep her.
this was such a great intro to this new book world !! omg i need more of victoria and kane so bad 😩 i can just FEEL the yearning and pining through the letters. the way kane spoke to her was just so poetic and possessive at the same time. victoria knows what she wants and getting out and far away from the castle is her top priority. when she gave herself in to kane i swear i felt myself give in too 😭 that man is so seductive i might actually combust 🥰 i have a strong feeling these two will be so powerful if the author decides to have a full length novel of them !! i would immediately pick it up the second it drops 😍

Dark repunzal meets unseelie far, alright🫣
This was a short and (not) sweet, one sitting kind of story that had every trope I could ever want in it.
Fated mates, rivals to lovers, virgin fmc, forced proximity; THE LIST GOES ON AND ON and it’s CHEF’S KISS
The back and forth between the fmc and mmc via letters is very interesting, as we, the outsiders, know what is happening. The sheltered fmc did not understand what was going on until she had met the mmc, Kane, in person.
Victoria’s gilded cage was one I wish we had more time to discuss within the story (although I saw the authors note and I think we will get more of this 👀🫣) as well as more of Kane (because duh he’s yummy).
The novella in itself was spectacular, but I do feel like I want just a little more. Maybe that’s because the characters were just SO good and the story has so much depth and potential and power that I’m invested and now I need more. Who knows ? 🤣
Total of 4.25 stars because I’d totally read this again, and if the author drops another one, I’ll be first in line.

This book delivered on everything it said it would: short, spicy, and fun for a weekend or afternoon. At ~115 pages, it gave me just about all it could. Fated mates and forbidden love are some of my favorite tropes, and for a super short novella this did a pretty good job. I think the key to reading this is knowing it is literally just a short story with a build up to spice. I actually think if this was expanded and edited a bit it could have potential to be a full length book. If you need to read something in a short plane ride, in one sitting on the couch, or to hit your reading goal - this is your gal!

So good that once I picked it up I couldn’t put it down. At just over 100 pages this is a quick read, and I had a fun time!

Princess Victoria is caged within a tower, and Kane, an Unseelie High Lord, is a prisoner on a prison colony island. Only natural that they become penpals, right? Of course, there's more to it... They are fated. But not without trials and obstacles.
There's a little bit of repetition in the musings for both Victoria and Kane. Once that hump is mounted, the story takes off and gets better, more enthralling, more engrossing. Though there were some things that I felt weren't adequately explained or resolved in the end. Overall, being a short read, it was entertaining for the most part.
"Logic and this fever heat mix like oil and water, the desire for Kane mounting with each moment. All I want to do is consume, and have him consume me." (Ch 7)

The beginning had me hooked and then it just kinda fell flat to me. I get it’s a novella but I would’ve liked a bit more explanation on certain things. I mean why bother writing them or mentioning it multiple times if there’s no explanation. I was curious why he chose to stay in prison for two years and how did he escape I’m so lost on that….seems like he just walked out lol no one stopped him or anything…was it even a prison? Idk I’m probably nitpicking
the ending I did enjoy. Who doesn’t love when the FMC gets her revenge. Overall an ok read.

This is a dark fantasy novella that has our FMC stuck in a tower, waiting to be used by her father to secure an alliance. She gives Orlaith vibes 1000% of the way--I love her! But you know, her super hot fated mate starts corresponding to her via letters from the prison below her, and now she wants nothing more than to escape with him and say goodbye to her wasted life.
Honestly? Same girl. I get it.
This was a super fun and bingeable read, and it definitely made me want to read more--I would LOVE this if it became a fully-fledged novel or 12. For as short as this is, it definitely packs a spicy little punch.

This is definitely a book you can read in one sitting and that's probably how you'll read it because once you pick it up you won't want to put it down.
With so much happening in such a short amount of time I was definitely worried that it would feel rushed but it actually didn't. There was a really nice build up to them meeting. The freaking TENSION will get you 😌. I loved the letter writing aspect too I felt more pulled into the story.
I do wish it had been a bit longer. They don't actually meet until closer to the end and I really wanted more of them together.

When Violet starts writing him, he immediately realizes she’s his mate and now there’s more at stake than just overthrowing the current high lord.
Violet can’t help the pull she feels toward Kane and when she finds herself healing him in prison, everything is set in motion for them to be together.
While I had a bit of trouble understanding the world and its players, the romance was really wonderful. I wish there had been a little more smut 😂😂 but I’m greedy like that. Violet and Kane were just really swoony. Violet was wit and grace and Kane was rugged and broody.

This was such a fantastic little dark romance treat! Clocking in at just over 100 pages, this was the perfect little afternoon read, especially for my first by this author!
First of all, that cover is GORGEOUS!!! I was initially intrigued by the cover, and stayed for the dark romance!
I loved how Victoria was trapped in a tower (for the most part), just waiting for her father to find her a suitable man to marry, but she was quite feministic in that she knew what she wanted (and what she didn’t) and she used the resources she could to escape her fate. I loved that she was older (33 YO), and having been trapped for so long, she didn’t even initially like the idea of “fated mates” thinking it to be one prison exchanged for another. This was an interesting take I haven’t considered before, and I’m glad she came around to the fated mates idea.
Kane was as brooding and scarred as they come, and he knew how hard he had to at least appear to be in order to gain the power he needed for his end goals. I loved how methodical he was in every part of his life, except when it came to his obsession and mating bond with Victoria. He could not help but be soft for his mate, often telling her what he would need to do in order to keep her safe.
The obsession was palpable!! The entire thing read like a teenager in love’s fever dream, IN THE BEST WAY POSSIBLE!! I could feel the obsession in every letter and it kept me hooked!!
Bottom line, I loved the writing style and the characters. I really hope the only person who was nice to Victoria, Ginger, gets her own story next!

Victoria has spent her entire life in a gilded cage. The adopted daughter of the wicked Seelie King, she would do anything to escape the walls of her high tower. When she starts writing to Kane, the Seelie King’s imprisoned enemy, she never expected a response. But when Kane writes back, she finds herself drawn to the one person she’s supposed to hate.
Bound in Violet Ink by Charlotte Mallory is the perfect novella to curl up with on a lazy Saturday afternoon. Filled with swoon-worthy tension and enough sweetness to give you a toothache, I devoured this story in less than two hours. The dialogue was fantastic, the writing moved quickly, and the characters were compelling without being too complex.
While I wished there had been a little more time spent developing character growth, I understand that the short format of the novella limited how much growth could be shown. My main concern was that this felt like the first hundred pages of a novel that I can’t wait to read rather than a novella that stands entirely on its own. Bound in Violet Ink by Charlotte Mallory is the perfect novella to curl up with on a lazy Saturday afternoon. Filled with swoon-worthy tension and enough sweetness to give you a toothache, I devoured this story in less than two hours. The dialogue was fantastic, the writing moved quickly, and the characters were compelling without being too complex.
While I wished there had been a little more time spent developing character growth, I understand that the short format of the novella limited how much growth could be shown. My main concern was that this felt like the first hundred pages of a novel that I can’t wait to read rather than a novella that stands entirely on its own. This novella is so much fun! So much story and lore packed into a bit-sized package. Great chemistry. I was sad to see it end!

My thoughts:
I was amazed at how much was packed into this novella! Excellent world-building and character development. Wonderful tension and chemistry between Victoria and Kane, despite their physical distance most of the story. Kane has great shadow daddy energy, and I love how he makes himself soft only for her.
I opened this story and couldn’t put it down. Truly a fun and dark ride. I would love to see this expanded into a novel one day.

A very quick dark romantasy within 100 pages! This is my first introduction to this author. I loved the forbidden exchange of letters between Kane and Violet. They had me fully immersed and I wanted more from their relationship because it felt rather fast paced. Since this is a novella, I found it a bit tricky to rate. While I wanted more from the storyline and worldbuilding, I understand why it was kept short. The relationship didn’t feel fully developed to me, but I did enjoy the chemistry and tension between Kane and Violet. I’d love to read a full length novel about them too because this snippet of them had a lot of potential to the romance. The beginning of the story was a little confusing and there were still a few things that I had questions about by the end. But as the story went on, the main plot-line made more sense. This was a nice break from my heavier reads and I had an overall fun time with it!

Immediately, I loved the Gothic vibes of this story and wished that I was reading it during a thunderstorm! I felt like I could hear the rain outside my window as I met Victoria and was thrust into her world.
I thought the world-building and Victoria's backstory were flawlessly woven into the narrative. Bits and pieces were sprinkled into the story while the plot progressed.
I loved Victoria and Kane's story so much that I devoured it in one sitting! While I found this novella to have a very satisfying ending, I'd absolutely love for Charlotte Mallory to build on this world and continue Victoria and Kane's story. They are such amazing characters that I know their relationship and their experiences in this world would continue to be fascinating!

I think my only complaint with this book is that there isn’t more of it 💗
This is a very small novella, filled with tension, yearning and spice! I would absolutely read a 500 page book of these characters, I feel like I’m already in love with Kane just from 100 pages of knowing him..
We have Dual POV, we have fated mates, we have fae, and all of it is in a small little bundle ready to read in a few quick hours. If you want the spicy dark fantasy vibe but you’re not ready to commit to a gigantic book, then this is the perfect novella for you 💜

Bound in Violet Ink was such a treat! This little novella packed a huge emotional punch. I absolutely loved the letter writing between the FMC and MMC and it was full of tension, yearning, and that delicious slow-burn vibe. For such a short read, it delivered so much heart and heat. This was my first book by this author and now I need to read more! If you’re into fated mates and brooding, morally grey MMCs, don’t miss this one. Thanks to the Nerd Fam for the gifted ARC!

• Fae
• Dual POV
• Fated mates
• Dark, broody MMC
I think my only critique that prevented it being a five star read for me was that I just wanted a little bit more character/plot development. I loved the fact that it was short but I think some things in the plot could’ve been explained a little more. These characters really had a lot of potential for more.
I would like to read more by this author!

Firstly, thank you to Charlotte and Nerdfam for this gifted arc opportunity. I had the pleasure of arc reading her Secrets of Jane duet and LOVED IT so when I saw Char releasing a novella, I knew I had to apply!
This sweet and short novella takes place in both a fae palace and prison. We follow dual POVs from our FMC, Victoria, and MMC, Kane. Both imprisoned but one a gilded cage and the other on the premise that he has been captured, but his plans run deeper. After saving Victoria one evening, Kane allows himself to be arrested. From there his plans can begin, but a new challenge inadvertently arises as well. Victoria can’t get Kane out of her mind after he rescued her. Her isolated room in the tallest tower allows no freedom and finally she can handle her loneliness and curiosity no longer, so she writes to the Unseelie king who saved her.
I enjoyed my time within these pages and found the plot unique and intriguing. I would love to see this become full length and get to spend more time with them! Especially between chapters 10 & 11. 🤭 But as it is, BIVI was a nice reprieve from my heavier reads. Looking forward to what comes next from Charlotte.

The obsession. The pining. The tension. My only complaint about this novella is that I need MORE!
I read this in one sitting (which is rare for me, even for a novella). Mallory’s immersive writing drew me in and I enjoyed the gothic, dark vibes of the story.
Victoria is a smart, strong woman who knows what she wants despite being sheltered most of her life. Kane is the brooding, possessive, burn-the-world-for-her MMC I knew would be added to my book boyfriend list, especially in the last chapter when he lets Victoria have her revenge on those who have wronged her.
I am on Mallory’s street team, and highly recommend this novella as well as her Improper Bastards series. I can’t wait to see what she writes next!

This was a quick and easy read.
A seelie girl secretly writing to an imprisoned Unseelie lord.
It’s a very fast paced and spicy book. There were some things that happened with no real explanation. I also felt like I kind of just jumped right into the story with no background to the characters and the characters also just didn’t have time to grow. the world doesn’t fully feel finished to me as well. However, If you like quick fantasy spice, it might work for you. If you want a strong plot, unfortunately this one falls short.
This is a definitely something I’d recommend to anyone in a reading slump that just needs something easy to get through and back in the mood to read and also anyone wanting a dark, spicy retelling of Repunzel.

Oh, this is a great touch her & die Romantasy novella 😍🔥 this was such a fun fast paced read! Perfect for those who want to take a break from their thick books and get a short read in!
You have a fae who is def feral and you got court politics in this novella where you come across Kane and Victoria who exchange secret letters and seeing their relationship grow in here was sizzling hot with some good banter!

This novella has all the delicious romantasy tropes wrapped inside a super quick and easy read. Fated mates, political intrigue, fae, and spice? Sign me up!
The only thing missing is MORE. I wish this story was 5 times the length so that I could get to know the characters and world in more depth.

First of all I’d like to thank both The Nerd Fam and Charlotte Mallory for allowing me to read this book in advance. This although a novella had me invested fully in the story of Kane and Victoria.
These fated mates and the way they ultimately came together despite being from two worlds was captivating. The only reason I didn’t give this five stars was I felt in the last chapters things had to be rushed a bit to tie the loose ends up and I was just craving so much more from the story and these characters.
But the writing drew me in and I would love to read more about this world and about Kane and Victoria.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novella - fated mates is my absolute favorite trope, and I thought this was really well done. I would honestly love to see more of Kane and Victoria’s story - but I felt the novella did wrap everything up with a nice bow! There was a perfect amount of spice for a lil novella too.
