The Fix-Up: A totally hilarious, forced-proximity enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy

Rate this book
Ellie should probably have listened to the part where inheriting her house came with a hot, grumpy stranger and six months to figure it all out…

Ellie Sterns is a twenty-eight-year-old single mother who only ever seems to date seriously questionable men. But she’s just inherited both a home and thriving café, so life is looking up. The catch? Only half belongs to Ellie—the other half goes to the previous owner’s grandson. Gilbert Dalton may be absurdly handsome, but his frown never wavers and he has a chip on his shoulder the size of a small country.

Ellie would happily spend the rest of her life avoiding him, but to claim their inheritance, they must first live on the property together for six months. For Ellie, the house and the café are her future. For Gil, they’re part of a past he wants nothing to do with. She wants to stay, he is determined to sell. Will they be able to decide what comes next without going to war with Ellie’s whisk and Gil’s toolbelt as weapons?

But somewhere between the snarky notes they leave around the place, and discovering a heartbreaking secret about the house’s previous owner, Ellie and Gil might learn that frustration can turn into sizzling chemistry, and hate can turn into not-hateand that’s basically only one step away from love…

A totally uplifting, heart-stealing and addictive enemies-to-lovers romance full of sweet chemistry and true laugh-out-loud moments. Perfect for fans of Abby Jimenez, Emily Henry and Sarah Adams.

About the author

Sharon M. Peterson is a former middle school teacher and has the personality to prove it. One of her favorite quotes is from Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath: “It was her habit to build up laughter out of inadequate materials.” She strives to tackle life that way and create characters who do the same. She lives in Washington with her husband and four children, including two autistic sons. She has two cats, one dog, one Russian tortoise, one tattoo, and an intense fear of poodles (don’t ask). She can usually be found hunched over her computer, creating characters and stories she hopes you’ll love as much as she does.

It was such a sweet and heartwarming story, one I really loved. I liked it a whole lot more than I was expecting.

Ellie is a single mother, who started her life over in a small town where a grumpy old man Ollie, took her and her son in. After his death, she inherits his home and the café, but under one condition. She only owns half, the other half goes to his grandson Gilbert, one nobody knew he had. Both of them have to live in the house for the next six months to get their share. He wants to sell, she wants to stay. They don't like each other at all, but a lot can change in six months.

I loved Ellie, I can recognise parts of myself in her, so I felt a special connection to her. And I think I should definitely use her notes system, that's genius. I really liked Gil too, the way he understood her, how he was with her son and how he tried to do what's best for his brother.
I adored their story, all the banter, the sticky notes and the tension. It really was a slow burn, but worth it in the end.
We also got a little glimpse into why Ollie was absent from Gil's life, which was heartbreaking.
The small town setting and all the secondary characters really made this story great. And Ellie's son Oliver was adorable.

It was an amazing story, it really made me feel all the feelings. I had fun, fell in love and cried a little. It really struck a chord with me. Also, the fact that the author started every chapter with a note of what love is, answered by a child, is honestly the cutest thing I have ever read.

The only complaint I have is that the ending was a little bit rushed, I wish we got more. An epilogue would've been great.

This was my first book by this author, but I'll most definitely read more, especially since I found out that Chris already has his own book.

Thank you Netgalley and to Bookouture for providing me with this amazing ARC, in exchange for my honest review.

I went into it not knowing what the book will be about or if I would like it. Surprisingly, I enjoyed this one so so much!! Giggled, shed some tears and everything in between. I loved how the old man, Ollie, cared for her even after he passed, and that his dream of them meeting came true. Oliver, Ellie's son, was adorable and made my heart so warm reading about him. The gradual connection and relationship made me giddy. Their post it notes, ahh! loved them. And the little quotes from kids about what love is at the begining of each chapter was the cherry on top.

This was my first book written by Sharon M. Peterson, but I am now so excited to read the others! 5+ stars!

it's not enemies to lovers. they dislike each other. there's banter. they're not actually enemies. but that's on the marketing department and has nothing to do with the book itself.

the book was okay. it's not memorable and blends in with every other 'enemies to lovers' romance out there. there's adhd representation, which is something you don't see often, and i think it was handled well. overall, it's nothing to write home about, but it's far from being a bad book.

thank you to netgalley and the publisher for the arc

The Fix-Up is a heartwarming romantic comedy set in a small town, that features a very special couple. I was captivated by Gil and Ellie’s story from their not-so-meet-cute, through the sometimes rocky road they traversed to FINALLY get to their happily ever after. I loved this couple so much, but mostly I loved the depth of their concern for each other, from the little things to the big things that they did for each other. I loved the post it notes they left for each other, I loved how much Gil cared for Ellie’s son, I loved their relationships with their friends and family, I loved the small town vibes that added so much to their love story. This is the perfect feel-good romance, one that made me feel all the butterflies. Their path to happiness was is not easy—there are obstacles that seem too difficult to overcome—but the bumps along the way made their love story that much sweeter in the end. I received an advance reader copy of this novel.

I got this book as an ARC read and I couldn’t put it down! I loved the characters, as well as the inclusion of previous characters from the other books of hers. The story was sweet, and yet kept you wondering how things would play out. A fun read and makes you remember you never know what others think.

The Fix-Up is the kind of romance that draws you in from the very first page. With the perfect blend of warmth, wit, and emotional depth, it’s a story that lingers long after the final chapter. Ellie is a strong, determined single mom who’s just inherited half a house and café—along with a grumpy (but absurdly attractive) co-owner, Gil, who wants nothing to do with any of it.

Their forced cohabitation sets the stage for a slow-burn romance full of tension, banter, and unexpected tenderness. Gil doesn’t have a tragic past, but a mysterious one—especially when it comes to his grandfather Ollie, the man who left everything behind. As Ellie and Gil navigate their new normal, long-buried emotions come to light, and so does the chemistry neither of them expected.

Ellie’s son Oliver absolutely stole my heart. His bond with Gil grows in the most heartwarming ways, and his joy and curiosity bring a beautiful layer of light to the story. I also really enjoyed Gil’s brother, Mikey—his emotional depth and unwavering loyalty stood out. Mikey clearly just wants to be wherever Gil is, and the friendship he and Oliver develop is both touching and sweet.

What truly made this book shine for me was the writing. Sharon M. Peterson’s voice is engaging and heartfelt, with pacing that feels just right. You can tell how much thought, care, and emotion went into every chapter. The story flows effortlessly, filled with both laugh-out-loud moments and scenes that tug at your heart.

The Fix-Up is a charming, feel-good read with forced proximity, lovable characters, and a romance that builds naturally and beautifully. It’s everything I want in a small-town love story—and more.

I received this book for free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

This book is everything a rom-com should be! 👏🏽 👏🏽👏🏽 I laughed (literally out loud) at least a dozen times, there were plot twists (the best kind), I shed a few sweet tears and stayed up way too late reading this!

Some people read to escape reality (definitely been here), but a good book has the power to actually help you see and enjoy the world around you MORE. This book does just that! It left me smiling and feeling thankful. The characters were far from perfect and they felt real in the best way possible.

And the cherry on top of all this (at least for me)? This book was closed-door (zero sexual content) and had basically zero language—unless you count “what the fork” as cursing 😆 There is definitely steam (attraction, kissing), but no spice.

I’ve read so many rom-com novels and I RARELY give them 5 ⭐️, but this one absolutely earned it!

Age rating: Older teen/adult.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the eARC of this book!! Can’t wait to read more by this author!

I was giggling at Ellie & Gil's banter so late at night, had a hard time suppressing it 😂 but then oh my!! it did make me shed some real fat tears too 😭 the chemistry, story flow, cuteness, everything is so ON point!

I absolutely loved this book! The entire series was fantastic, but this one was by far my favorite. It made me laugh, cry, and feel truly happy, all at once. I especially loved the character Oliver; he’s such a sweet and endearing kid. As a mom, I really connected with Ellie and the way she describes her love for her child and how complete he makes her feel. I highly recommend this book❤️

Ellie and Gilbert inherit a house and cafe in a small town. As strangers. In order to gain both, they're required to live in the house for 6 months. Ellie wants nothing more than the stability her potential future provides and Gilbert wants time to fly so he can sell everything and walk away for good.
The Fix Up isn't my first - nor will it be my last - from Sharon. Both heartwarming and humorous, I easily devoured this. Every character is so well brought to life and I love this small town with its lively characters that bring Stars Hollow to mind with their meddling and nosy ways. Ellie and Gil bring out the best (after the worst) in the other and Oliver, Ellie's son, is so charming in his wonder for dinosaurs and matchmaking energy.

Thank you @to the author for the gifted copy! All thoughts are my own.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

After losing her father figure Ollie, Ellie learns that he has left her his house and cafe. But she’s not the only one who was left this inheritance. Ollie’s estranged grandson also has a claim to the cafe and house. The terms of the will are simple: the two must live together for 6 months before they can claim their inheritance. Both have opposing plans as to what they want to do with the house and cafe. As the two get to know each other plans seem to go by the wayside, but what will happen once the six months are up?

This story is told from Ellie’s POV, and I felt like we really needed Gil’s POV in this. He’s a reserved man, and we never really get an idea of where he stands, what he thinks. I couldn’t really connect with Ellie. On the one hand she’s devoted to her son and a hard worker, but on the other hand she’s very selfish and doesn’t take into consideration that Gil may have his own struggles that lead him to make the decision he makes. I didn’t feel the chemistry between them at all. I did love his relationship with Oliver and thought that was very wholesome, but as far as his relationship with Ellie, it never felt like it evolved. They would take one step forward only to take two steps back. I didn’t feel the yearning or passion between them. The story dragged and the characters just fell flat. For those who like spice in their romance, you won’t find that here.

Ultimately, while a quick read, it was quite lackluster.

Love on Post-It Notes

A lovely story that had me laughing, crying, and rooting for an incredibly well done enemies to lovers couple. The conflict is so well thought out, the meet cute had me howling (sorry neighbors!), and the conclusion had me smiling so hard my cheeks hurt. Two Hearts feels like home and I’m so glad to be back 😍

ARC REVIEW:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Sharon M. Peterson’s fourth novel, The Fix-Up reminds us that everyone deserves a helping hand!

Two Hearts, Texas offered a fresh start to Ellie (Elenor) Sterns, a single mother struggling to keep her head above water. While the entire community embraced her and her son with open arms, no one accepted them faster than Ollie. As one of the oldest living members of Two Hearts and owner of the quaint but beloved Sit-n-Eat Café, he shocked the small community by graciously offering Ellie both a job and a place to live. That is until his passing a few years later. While Ollie planned to provide for Ellie long after his death, he tied it up with a small but complex contingency, Gilbert (Gil) Dalton. With Ellie’s future once again in limbo she must work with a stranger to decide the fate of Ollie’s home and business.

Everyone time I get my hands on a Sharon M. Peterson novel I promise myself I am going to savor it. But the moment I begin reading I am reminded of how much I love her work. Not only does she put the laugh in ‘laugh-out-loud romantic comedies’, but her quirky, down-to-earth characters worm their way into my heart. So much so, that I can’t put the book down until I know how their stories end. This woman consistently has me reading way past my bed time!

The Fix-Up is by far my favorite book of Peterson’s. While I have loved everything she has ever written, there is just something so special about this book. Ellie and Gil’s relationship was complicated due to them each having a dependent and an extraordinary amount of pressure to do right by them. However, seeing them place their happiness to the side made me root for them twice as hard. They truly have become one of my top book couples!!

An added bonus was returning to the world of Two Hearts and catching up with beloved characters such as Mae and Ali. Thankfully, you don’t have to have read Peterson’s previous books, The Fake Out and The Fast Lane, to enjoy this one. Despite being interconnected, they are true standalone novels that can be read as such. However, you would be doing yourself a disservice to not read them all.

Standout moments in this book include:
-Oliver’s Mischievous Plan
-Easter Dinner with the Sterns
-Ellie’s Craft Closet
-Gil(bert)’s Grand Gesture
-The Ending (I dare you not to cry)

Special thanks to Netgalley, Bookouture, and Sharon M. Peterson for gifting me an electric and physical copy of this book (plus some added goodies) in exchange for my honest review.

*T-minus 360 days till I get my much needed Sharon M. Peterson fix, hopefully featuring another Two Heart’s resident!!!

Book Review: The Fix Up by Sharon Peterson

Okay grab your snacks, your favourite hoodie, and maybe a mug of something warm that makes you feel like the main character, because we’ve got a slow burn, enemies-to-lovers kinda ARC read to discuss.

Let’s start with our FMC: Ellie.
I wanted to like you straight off the bat, I really did—but I’ll be honest, you came in a little too hot. We get it, life has beat you up, spit you out.. You’ve got your walls up, your resting grump face on, and your guard dog energy is front and center. But also… could you maybe not be so rude to literally everyone?? I was like, “Ma’am, I know you’ve got ADHD chaos brewing beneath that snark, but can we just chill?” But we redeemed half way through she settled and we got there in the end.

Ohhhh the tropes
✨ Enemies to Lovers vibes
✨ Forced proximity … still no real explanation on the why but that’s okay
✨ One-bed-but-make-it-house-share I had a giggle

Now onto the MMC. Gilbert
Bless this cinnamon roll of a man.
He shows up, doesn’t demand space, just sets up his tent like a chill little woodland man and minds his business while being lowkey the emotional support man we all deserve. No arguing, no toxic alpha-male ego, just good old-fashioned genuine human decency. He meets Ellie’s son Oliver and I MELTED.

The book’s main chic is character growth, especially Ellie’s journey from “I push everyone away because trauma” to “okay fine maybe love doesn’t suck.” Watching her soften? Like watching a grumpy cat reluctantly purring in your lap. Slow. Rewarding. Worth it.

Now… can we talk about the “I had a baby young” thing? Yes, we got it. After the seventh reminder.. I was like, “Okay. I remember, got it!’ It was clearly important, but we were being smothered in it.

Also—plot twist—no spice.
Not even a little sprinkle of cinnamon in the slow-burn stew. BUT IT WORKED. I was surprised. I didn’t miss the spice because the emotional core was strong, the slow development made sense, and the pacing felt like a movie that lets you marinate in the feels before the kiss. (Yes, there is kissing. You’re not left totally high and dry, don’t panic.)

If you want healing, growth, a man in a tent, and the smallest sprinkle of found family charm, give The Fix Up a go.
Just… prepare to be reminded several times that Ellie had a baby young. You know. In case you forget. 😅

Ellie is a single mom of a little boy, Oliver. They came to the small town of Two Harts, TX several years ago in search of a better life after Oliver's dad left them. Luckily, the community took them in, especially an old man, named Ollie. Ollie had a old home in need of repairs and needed tenants to help pay for the mortgage, so Ellie and Oliver moved in. Ollie also owned the small-town cafe and hired Ellie to work their and have Oliver there when she couldn't find daycare. All of a sudden, Ollie passes away. It wasn't known that Ollie had any family, so everything was left to Ellie and Oliver. It was, until Gilbert shows up at Ellie's front door. Gilbert (Gil) turns out to be Ollie's secret grandson. Gil had a version of the will that said everything of Ollie's must be split between the two of them after 6 months of living on the property together. While Ellie is desperate to keep the property and her livelihood, Gilbert is wanting to sell everything and move back to Austin, where he has a life to take care of. Over the next 6 months, the two of them work together to fix up the properties and find that they have much more in common than there are differences. Gil and Oliver bond together -- Oliver even asking him to be a part of their family.

This is an adorable, little-to-no spice romance that makes you just blush. It's an enemies-to-lovers/grumpy-sunshiny dichotomy. It was pretty predictable, but one that makes you feel good. It was a fairly quick read. Would recommend!

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC!

The wonderful Sharon M. Peterson has done it yet again…. Up until now, her first book, The Do-Over, was my favorite. However, the Fix-Up has given it a good run for its money, and it’s pretty hard to choose now.

Ellie is such a relatable character. (I’ve pretty much self diagnosed myself with ADHD.) I think many will see themselves reflected in her with the craft closet, forgotten laundry, and neglected accounting among other things.

Gil is the guy every woman would want in a partner. Silently going behind you and completing your unfinished tasks, and doing the things you want (or need) to do, but never seem to get around to, with nary a complaint.

I love that her characters are flawed and imperfect, and you can’t help but hope and pray they will get it together and everything will work out. You really become invested and want them to get it right. It’s messy, and real, and it makes the happily ever after so much more realistic and gratifying.

This book had me laughing out loud throughout, and then blubbering and wiping away tears from chapter 57 right up to the end where I was smiling with tears running down my face.

The Fix-Up is definitely not a fixer upper, it’s a grand slam, and another winner by one of my favorite authors, Sharon M. Peterson!!!

The Fix-Up by Sharon M. Peterson
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

If you’re after laugh-out-loud chaos, small-town charm, and the ultimate grumpy-sunshine romance, The Fix-Up is your next must-read!

Ellie is a single mum, ADHD whirlwind, queen of dating duds (relatable AF), who inherits half a house and café—and a whole lot of trouble—when she learns she has to live with grumpy-hot Gilbert for 6 months. Enemies to lovers? Check. Forced proximity? Check. Ollie scheming from beyond the grave?? CHECK. ✔️

I was highlighting passages and cackling in the first 20% alone. Ellie’s voice is hilarious, Oliver is the most adorably blunt kid with a one-track mind (I’m starting a petition for him to get a baby brother!), and Gil… well, let’s just say the Cute Man Club he has with Oliver is heart warming 🥹🦖

Also:
💬 Passive-aggressive sticky notes? Iconic.
☕ Iris deserves a customer service medal - sassy queen!!
💘 Mae and Ali’s matchmaking plans? Chaotic good.
🫶 The way Gil bonds with Oliver over dinosaurs? I’m not okay.
🤣 And yes, I Googled how sand is name thing. Ollie’s version is superior.

Tropes you’ll love:
✨ Grumpy x sunshine
🏠 Forced proximity
🌆 Small-town antics
🔥 Enemies to lovers

Huge thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC in exchange for my honest review. If you love heart, heat (with no 🍆) and hilarity, The Fix-Up will steal your heart (and probably leave you leaving sticky notes just to feel something 😏

Thank you so much to @bookouture and @netgalley for this eARC in exchange for an honest review, I flippin' loved it!

First of all, go add June 17th to your calendars pronto. Second, Peterson needs a lot more attention than I feel she is receiving! This forced proximity, enemies to lovers, small town, slow burn rom-com was so perfectly written and paced, I completely forgot I was actually reading sometimes. All the characters are super loveable and relatable and had me wincing and laughing out loud at times.
The Fix Up has heart and heat but no spice, a few kisses at most, but I didn’t miss the spice at all because it was packed with so much emotion, tenderness and real feel good moments.
We only have Ellie’s point of view throughout this story, but I find it really helps understand her and her chaotic brain - I am 100% pinching the sticky note to-do list, though, because chapter 45 is just straight up me (ask my OH).
This is my first book by Peterson. She had me hooked in the first chapter. The rest of her books are now on my tbr, and she has immediately become an instant buy author for me. Honestly, I actually don’t have a single negative thing to say about this book, and it quickly became a 5 star less than halfway through. It's easily one of my favourite reads this year!

Ellie has a bad reputation with dating, so it's time to put it on pause. She has enough happening trying to be a single mum, running a business and now trying to keep the roof over her head.

Gilbert never knew his grandfather, but there is a secret love story that needs to be told, and one that may lead to his finding love, also.

I love that each chapter starts with a description of 'what is love?' described by children. Some of these made my heart melt, and the simplest answers were the best.

This novel explores themes of therapy and ADHD, I loved how Peterson made it so accepting and an easy everyday subject.

I loved the main characters in this novel. The character of Ellie made me want to bake. Gil and Ellie were so cute together, especially the scenes with the sticky note messages. I found myself trying to figure out their solution, and wanting to shout my ideas at how they could make things work down the pages.

There was also a scene I cried at sheer relief. This author knows how to make you feel all the emotions in this narrative.

We also revisit old characters from these previous novels, and I am genuinely so attached to them. This is a great addition to this series, which can be read as a standalone, but you do not want to miss out on this series.

Thankyou so much for sending me an ARC of this book and taking a chance on a first time reviewer with NetGalley

I loved this book. It is a closed door small town romance and is book 3 in the two harts series but can be read as a standalone. I devoured it in 2 sittings (only because at midnight I gave up and surrendered to sleep) I am an avid fan of Sarah Adams and this book is very reminiscent of her work being a sweet, funny romance that addresses deeper issues in a thoughtful and gentle way.

The main character Ellie has ADHD and I love how it went into how that looks for a woman and her strategies of coping with it (some of which I’ve pinched to help with my own struggles)

The fix up contains some of my fave tropes of small town, found family, neurodivergence, disability, single parent and rivals to friends to lovers.

I highly recommend this book to people that love small town romance series that make you laugh, cry and really think about life. It is heart felt and cosy with a fantastic plot that keeps you interested and characters that capture your heart.
I can’t wait to read the first two books of this series

•My Thoughts•
Yay for being back in the small town of Two Harts! Enjoyed getting Ellie’s story and seeing her come into her own as a mom and business owner. I love the way Sharon writes the small moments of tension, the shoulder brush, the hair tuck…so many soft sigh moments that I really enjoyed! I had a little trouble getting invested in bigger moments of the romance and would have loved more moments with the MMC, Gilbert, because I really liked him and wanted to know him more! Ellie was written beautifully real as a single mom with ADHD. I think (maybe?), at times, the humor took away from how amazing she was because but I found myself a little annoyed despite her being pretty awesome. The humor overall in this one was a bit too much for me. Regardless, Sharon made me laugh, swoon and wonder if we’ll get another Two Harts small town story (looking at you, Iris).

Thank you to Sharon Peterson and Bookouture for the early copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Another fabulous read from Sharon, it will have you laughing and sighing and despairing all at the same time.
Ellie has come to Two Harts with her young son to try and get her life back on track. The local cafe owner gives her a job and a roof over her and her son Oliver's head. Life is good then Ollie her saviour dies and apparently leaves everything to her.
Enter Gilbert Dalton, Grandson to Ollie and now half owner of the house and cafe Ellie thought was hers. They have to decide what to do with the property but first they have to live in it together for 6 months.
Ellie makes rules for Gilbert, involving a tent and a timetable for when he can come in the house. She has a young son and isn't letting this stranger into their lives.
Gilbert seems to have a huge problem being here, determined to sell up at the end of the 6 months, he mysteriously disappears every weekend. When he is there he has started to mend stuff around the house and Ellie is finding it hard to ignore how well a tool belt fits him. Add the friendship Gilbert has with Oliver, she is finding it very hard not to get starry eyed over this man who is the "enemy".
This is a fabulous read, it had me laughing out loud and shouting at both of them in equal measure. Add the gorgeous 6 year old Oliver who frankly is the only thing holding Ellie together at times, and the wonderful cast of people who are Two Harts and you won't want to put this down until the end.

The Fix-Up is a heartfelt and sweet book about a small-town romance! The plot, where the FMC has to convince the MMC not to sell a house that's been gifted to her by a beloved town member who passed - will remind you of Hallmark movies, but with a little more emotional depth and funny moments.

The romance was paced just right. There were moments that made me giggle, characters that felt real, and a charming small town that I could see from the page. I loved the ending!

What's more exciting is I just found out Sharon M. Peterson has other books, including one with a brother’s best friend trope - yes, please! I’ll definitely be picking that one up soon.

If you're in the mood for a warm, feel-good read with lovable characters and a charming setting, this is the one to curl up with.

Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for an e-ARC!

The Fix-Up was the sweetest of books! Ellie and Gil are an unlikely match at first, but the forced proximity of them being in the same house for six months is both hilarious and heartwarming. I loved watching their dynamic grow tentatively into friendship and then eventually into more.

I so loved the character of Oliver, Ellie’s six year old son. He really reads like a six year old- asking all the wrong questions at the wrong times but also leaning on his mom at the right ones. The relationship that Gil develops with Oliver is so precious, and I especially loved their “man club”.

This book was an easy read and a tender one. It’s got all the cute small town vibes as well as a lovely found family dynamic in Ellie and her friends as well as Ellie’s relationship with Ollie, whose passing kicks off the whole story. I will definitely be looking to read more of Sharon M. Peterson’s books in the future!

Thank you to Bookouture Publishers for the opportunity to read and review this book! I received a free advance copy of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review. All opinions expressed are my own.
