It was the summer of 1987. Camp Havenridge was supposed to be a fresh start for Abbye Simpson. A place to lay low, make friends, maybe figure herself out. Totally rad summer. That was the plan until she found someone had carved a message into her bunk.
The other counselors were telling conspiracy theories about a secret Cold War experiment called Project Mirror. It’s all fun and games until they find a mysterious file box, and it stops sounding like campfire fiction.
Beneath the camp is a forgotten facility still running, still storing things it was never meant to. And something in its walls knows her. Watches her. Wants her to remember.
This was a chilling, addictive short story that blends 80s nostalgia with scifi horror. Project Mirror is fast-paced, eerie, and brilliantly written. Highly recommended!
Project Mirror gave me Cabin in the Woods, Sleepaway Camp, and some other movies I've watched over the last 47 years vibes. This is the vibe I love. Abbye is the MC on her way to "counsel" kids at camp. Side note: why are they called camp counselors in movies? Who are they counseling? I've only learned of sex, drugs, alcohol, and murder. Is it because you'll need counseling after camp? Anywho's back on topic. Wait, no something else. Abbye, is it pronounced the same as Abby? Did I read somewhere in the story AB like Abbye? Don't judge me, I did not take notes and write my review immediately afterwards like I usually do. I didn't want to stop reading this book until I finished it and was up late. Smh...I'm rambling again.
Abbye arrives at camp and begins to see and hear things about Project Mirror almost everywhere she goes. Rumor has it, Project Mirror was a secret research camp. Was it? Or was it one of the old scary camp stories passed down year after year with added twists? Things are too weird, too many coincidences for Abbye to ignore.
While partying with the other counselors, things get fawnky! Everyone always claims they'd turn around if there was trouble in front of them in the middle of the night. We all know curiosity killed the cat and we all know our young dumb selves would want to see where all those Scooby Doo clues lead us. Where the clues lead Abbye and friends, is going to be mind blowing. Who's going to see tomorrow? Who's going to be down for the eternal count?
I like what I like and I had fun reading this one. When a story can unlock happy memories from my childhood, it's a winner with me.
This book had the orphan black and stranger things vibe to it. It was a really fun read…..I gave it 4/5 stars because I had a hard time understanding the underlying “why” to the experiment. Could be I’m dense…
This made me feel like I was reading a Fear Street book. this was a great little quick read that only takes a few hours to get through. It's not gruesome or overly violent, but it does give that creepy weird science feel. Good story pacing and well thought out characters. I'd be more than happy to read a sequel to this short story.
Project Mirror is a short sci-fi horror story set in the 80s and gives Fear Street mixed with The Twilight Zone vibes.
A group of counselors arrive at a summer camp and after orientation decide to party in the woods before the campers arrive. There's talk of an old cabin nearby and a secret government project. When they find the cabin, they're going to discover the truth in a terrifying way.
With any good throwback story, this one features a jock, a nerd, a cheerleader, a goth, and Abbye (yes, that's how she spells it), the "normal" one. But it's Abbye who is going to suffer the most as the hideous secrets of this cabin/underground government laboratory are revealed.
I loved the whole 80s vibe and the plot. I really wish this could have been a novella length story instead of a short. It would have been great to have some more background on the characters. But that's not a complaint about the author, just my opinion.
Still, this is one I highly recommend if you like those old school vibes with an intriguing narrative.
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher. This review is voluntary and is my own personal opinion.
An awesome short! This story set in the 80's lives up to it's expectations! I loved the campy vibe and the sci-fi mix with the young adult counselors. It starts off with the feel of a Friday the 13th movie, then surprises you with an underground bunker left from the cold war and an abandoned lab. All great horror and creepy elements. If you like a perfect short read of horror and sci-fi this is the perfect one.
