How to Chain Your Dragons

Rate this book
MOVE OVER LITTLE GREEN MEN—THERE’S A NEW ALIEN IN TOWN.

With Earth now occupied by monsters and women a scarce commodity, freedom sits at the top of my likely to-never-happen list.

But a girl can dream, can’t she? So I keep my eyes open for any chance to escape.

Opportunity knocks when the galactic overlords request my piloting skills to take their mysterious cargo into outer space.

But when I discover what the cargo is, opportunity isn’t all that’s knocking.

Be still my beating heart—Magnificent dragon shifters hang in chains before me. Naked.

Aren’t they the bad guys too? Or are the enemies of my enemies my friends?

My girly bits seem to have an opinion on the matter. They vote for friends… well, more than just friends.

Friends or not, I still have a moral compass guiding me. And unless I can come up with a plan, these gorgeous males will be handed over to a species more malicious than the monsters I serve.

So as our ship carries us closer to disaster, the chains that seem to be binding our souls together are also setting my world on fire.

Or maybe that’s just a phaser burning through our hull…

This post-apocalyptic adventure offers readers a humorous yet darkish, standalone sci-fantasy romance, featuring a feisty female and the three alien dragon shifter brothers she’s destined to be with. If you love adding a little spice to your life, traveling to places that are out of this world, and kumquats (who doesn’t love kumquats?) this is your kind of book. You gotta read it now…

Wow, this story is a delight. Love the heroine, full of sass. And a triad of dragon yumminess for her pleasure. Great storyline, plenty of action, with humour thrown in. Loved it.

https://www.bookbub.com/books/how-to-... book is a real page turner and kept me on the edge of my seat. From humor to suspenseful action events in other galaxies, this book has it all!

Romance and alien species causing havoc in a human heroine bring spice to the pages. The triplets who are seven feet tall with green colored eyes bring the strength and "protector" vibe that the heroine refuses to want out accept.

Good luck getting sleep. This is a book you will not want to put down.

Let’s be clear—I went in expecting a fun little space romp with some scaly boys and maybe a dramatic escape or two. What I got was a full-on emotional rollercoaster, a trio of devastatingly hot dragon shifters, and a heroine who said “trauma? Never heard of her” as she power-walked through alien chaos like an interstellar badass.

The Premise:

Our girl just wants a break. A way out from the ruined Earth ruled by cruel Drakes. But Fate has other plans. Before she can blink, she’s tangled up in high stakes adventures with three legendary dragon shifters and unintentionally collecting a spicy celestial harem like she’s playing Pokémon—but thirstier.

The Dragons:

• Zyair – Alpha energy with brains, brawn, and a gaze that could melt titanium. If leadership were sexy personified, it would be him.

• Xandros – Big, red, and secretly soft? Yes please. His gentle strength absolutely wrecked me in the best way.

• Rhodes – The kind of warrior who would burn down galaxies for you, then offer to make you tea while shirtless. 10/10, would soul-bond again.

The Vibes:

• High-stakes space drama? Check.

• Romance with claws and consequences? Double check.

• Found family with wings, scales, and ridiculous sexual tension? Oh, babe. Triple check.

What I Loved:

• The worldbuilding was vivid without info-dumping. I felt I knew enough to picture things without pages long descriptions of everything.

• The spice? Chef’s kiss. Varied, intense, and emotionally driven. Definitely had me kicking my little feeties.

• The heroine didn’t just survive—she thrived. And dragged these legendary dragon boys kicking and screaming toward emotional growth while doing it.

Final Thoughts:

“How to Chain Your Dragons” is for anyone who loves their romance with claws, cosmic consequences, and a lead who absolutely refuses to be anyone’s damsel. It’s spicy, sassy, and surprisingly heartfelt—with just enough emotional gut-punches to keep you invested between the wing-flapping and… other flapping.

I’m obsessed. I will absolutely be recommending this to every book gremlin I know.

I love the Ellie Horn writing partnership and have been hooked on their warrior hearts series. Actually, I've read all of their books (as far as I know) and while they all involve other realms, it's been a while since they wrote books that took place on spaceships, so this was especially fun. The last time they wrote a more sci-fi series was the Darkon Rising and I very much enjoyed that one. Like many of these books, this has a strong female character full of sass and talent, trying to take control over her own life. It is much like the fated mates/reverse harem stories like in the Warrior Hearts series, but from what I can tell, it takes place more in the future, since aliens and cryptids are definitely known by all and humans no longer run the Earth (or at least Winnepeg).

I really love Jaz and was it was entertaining to find out she had accidentally mated one of the three brothers. While I loved the relationship that eventually came to be with her and all three brothers, it almost took something away from the fact that the other two (or at least the third one) had to be done so that they could gain a benefit from being fully mated with your fated mates. While it seemed kind of rushed in some ways, I liked how they chose her mating with the third brother. And of course, I like that how this book is a standalone, AND that there is a satisfying ending, it still leaves it possible for the authors to write another book with this trio or in their universe at least. I really loved this quad and the premise of this story so I'm kind of hoping they will do what they did with the Warrior Hearts series (multiple series) and write more books, mentioning Jaz and company so that we can have some updates, lol!

So, another winner from the talented duo of Ellie Horn, writing something that I wanted to read in one sitting!

Living on Earth after it was taken over by dragon shifter aliens, Jaz has her own plan to gain her freedom. Unfortunately, she gains the attention of three mysterious Drakes, and her fake ear-tag is discovered all in the same day. Now Jaz is officially being considered by the Drakes as a potential mate, and her transport ship is being forced to make a suspicious, unofficial run under the direction of the local gang. Jaz knows her time is limited to make her escape, but she can't deny her attraction to the three Drakes she finds captive in her ship. She could rescue them, but will it cost her freedom?

Jaz is a very motivated and capable character. Unfortunately, her world is stacked against humans and women especially. This causes a lot of problems for her, but she refuses to give up. When she realizes she has somewhat accidentally mated to a Drake, she is horrified as she sees the relationship as a trap and a loss of freedom. She also has substantial prejudice against Drakes in particular from her past subjugation. As she gets to know Zyair, Xandros, and Rhodes, she realizes that she may actually like them, and may prefer a future together with them.

How to Chain Your Dragons is a fun alien romance with a lot of science fiction adventure elements. The reverse haram elements largely play well with the overall plot, which I largely liked, except there were a few instances where the plot insisted on intimacy. This gave some of the sexual elements a feeling of "quick we have to sleep together to get this benefit". But overall it was a delightfully action packed novel with a lot of humor and spice.

HOW TO CHAIN YOUR DRAGONS appears to be a standalone, but could so easily be the first in a new series. In fact, I hope it is as I really want to see more of these Raptor Drakes and their True Mate fated females.

Jaz has learned how to fly under the radar as far as the Drakes, who run her part of 'town', are concerned. Unfortunately, that doesn't work for her half-brother or Kurt, his best friend. Females are in short supply, and Kurt has decided Jaz is his, whether she likes it or not. Luckily for her, their finding out she hasn't been tagged properly (yes, you read that right) means that she also gets injected with something that has an unexpected effect. During this time, she has met two of the three Raptor brothers, who will change her life.

This was a page-turner for me, and I loved every moment. The three Raptors - Zyair, Xandros, and Rhodes - were completely separate characters and personalities, making it easy to distinguish between the three. Jaz and Yani also had a wonderful relationship that thrived. This is not a galaxy for the weak, though, as some nasty characters are about. Those Manticores? Shudder!

Anyway, their story takes time to tell, and that just made it better. There are hot and spicy times, but they fit with the story and aren't just there for gratuitous pleasure! Jaz is no pushover, and if she does roll over, it's on her terms.

A great read that I thoroughly enjoyed, and a world I hope to return to. Absolutely recommended by me. 4.5 rounded up

Jaz is walking around Winnipeg, with all the different aliens that now live on Earth around her after the Drakes took over. There are the Vrep, and the Drolgoks besides the different Clans of the Drakes. One of the funniest things is that the leader of the Tazier Clan that controls her city’s name sounds like the bad F-word. So they are not allowed to say it, or they will be harmed. So, humankind is Drake property. Now that she is 21, Jaz is supposed to be tagged and evaluated, but she is smart and resourceful. Her half brother controls her father’s shipping company and her as well. She sees some Drakes that are different and they tag her. Those Drakes are unlike the ones of the Tazier, because they are a different Clan, the Raptors. Learning about them was heartbreaking. Zyair, Rhodes, & Xandros are triplets and very different. I love them. Nirzks are terrifying. *shudders* They are manticores. I found myself laughing at weird moments besides the funny ones, mostly from shock. Kurt is Jaz’s brother’s second in command and has always wanted her and now she has to get away. I dislike him immensely. Ariyani is a drolgok and Jaz’s bestie. I love her as well as the little pet, a hedge gopher, Sookie. Soooo cute! I want one. lol. A quick run turns into total mayhem and Yani & Jaz (& Kurt) find themselves in mega trouble. Jaz finds out that Zyair, Xandros and Rhodes are her mates and she has to fight with them against all comers in the book. I chewed my nails a lot during this book and needed the AC on. My stomach hurt a lot while reading and it is an emotional roller coaster ride. WOW. Total awesomeness. I can’t wait to read more.

"WOWSERS." Which is to say: I LOVED IT

Even in my late 30s I am continuously discovering and learning things, thanks to Romance books. My past reading history is fairly rich and varied, however, I am now realizing just how lacking my knowledge of the "science fiction" romance sub-genre is - but I am FUCQ*-ing thrilled this book was my introductory experience.
~I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.~

::think of Bill Hader's SNL character "Stefon" saying this::
This book has everything… world-building, space ships, aliens, gorgeous brother dragon shifters, fated-mates, knotting, kumquats, GADs**, and MORE…

I wonder how many of us would come to the same opinion/realization as me - that Jaz (the fmc) sounded eerily identical to the snark/sass/sarcasm of my very own inner voice?

Whether a chapter was from the perspective of Jaz, or the adorably hunky dragon-shifter Zyair, I always felt that I could accurately (mentally) create the scene/landscape. While I have read a number of books that have world-building, this was my first (and hopefully not last!) book that described the action involving piloting space ships.

Spice… Ellie Horn DELIVERS :D..and delivers… and delivers….

There is absolutely a guarantee of: blushing, blushing and giggling, cannot maintain "Poker face" while reading in public, fanny flutters, etc.

However - TW? possibly? - there are some descriptions of alien SA. I'll be honest - I was slightly taken aback, but the overall story and the characters' will to persevere helped put things in perspective (for example - the story's current political climate).

I'm just waiting for #booktok to go bonkers over this book…

exceptionally well written story that i loved. new author for me, jazmin is a human female trying to get off a dystopian earth and evade the mandatory evaluation at 21 by a clan of dragon shifters who have taken over earth. but her half brother set on using her catches her and forces her to be tagged and given a serum injection which ends up causing all kinds of problems. she accidentally meets 3 dragon shifters in town and runs from them. her brother sends her on a trip where she discovers those 3 shifters and an evil plot so she decides to try to make a deal. she would free them if they drop her on another world. soon everything goes awry and many plot twists happen. she discovers accidentally she is their fated mate and that changes everything because thats not what she wants. packed with action, danger, excitement, betrayal, suspense, acceptance, and so much more jaz has to make a decision on which way she wants her life to go and if she can just walk away from her three drakes and if so the pain that will cause. excellent character descriptions well round and full. excellent world building to where u can really picture everything in your mind. despite all the danger and hardship they face there is laughs, fun, giggles, spice, love and more to keep u enthralled to the very last page.

What a rush!!!!🥰😍🥰😍🥰🔥

Ellie Horn (or, the Ellie’s as they call themselves) is/are new authors for me and wow!!!! I can’t wait for more!!!!

This space adventure/shifter/fated mates/post alien invasion/reverse harem romance was soooooo goooood!!!!

I knew from the first paragraph that it was going to be great! It was the sass and snark of Jaz, the FMC. I was NOT disappointed🤭🤗🥰. The diverse and entertaining personalities of the 3 Drake MMC’s and all the other characters were also amazing.

Really, the plot was complex and full but not overly confusing. The writing was delightful. You know how sometimes with a longer more complex book you just feel like you’re slogging through trying to get to the good parts? Not here… they were all good parts! The villains ranged from just creepy bad guys to truly disgusting aliens. There were all kinds of twists and turns and surprises.

The spice??? Transcendent 😍🤗🔥. I found myself feeling what they were feeling…(well, not EXACTLY what they were feeling…🙄😳… but…) you know… heart racing, breath catching… The god stuff🤗😍🔥🥰

So if you couldn’t guess by all of that… I 10/10 would recommend!

In every book written by these authors, I end up loving the originality of the characters within. Meeting them in a sci-fi setting for the first time though, was a truly amazing surprise! In this case the main characters have a very close resemblance to the dragon shifters in the Warrior Hearts Academy series, but some of the side characters were a true joy to discover. And still, nothing beats discovering this world through space travel. Add a bit of a dystopian feel to it all, and I was in why choose heaven. Truly, I loved this book!

In a way I'll probably always keep a slight preference for these authors' series, because of the tension in the relationship building. These standalones have a faster burn and less tension and angst, but I still enjoy them a lot. And with the preference many readers seem to have for standalones lately, I have to say these are written well. The storyline is engaging and fast-paced, the characters all have an individual personality, and the HEA is satisfying. I'm hopeful there will be more in this world to follow!

Interstellar travel is possible…while Earth is now ruled by the Drakes…alien dragon-shapeshifters.

Depending on one’s ‘location’ on Earth…you’re under the ‘rule’ of different clans….some more vicious than others.

Jaz…just wants to escape…escape her obnoxious brother…Earth…the Drakes & take her chance in the stars…

What happens when you’re ‘requested’ to pilot a ship to three ‘criminal’ Drakes? One of which…just happened to have ‘tagged’ you a day or so earlier?? Plus having to deal with the obnoxious security your brother sends with??

What happens when you find out they’re your fate-chosen mates?

The answers can be found within the pages of How to Chain Your Dragons.

This was my first book by Ellie Horn, and I throughly enjoyed it—though felt it started a little slow, but once they got into the stars…the story picked up. I always enjoy a why-choose romance, and these three brothers were perfection, balancing each other nicely in regards to Jaz.

Four stars, & I’ll be keeping my eyes out for the next book in the potential series.

How To Chain Your Dragons is suspenseful and a page turning alien romance. The book is fabulously written, well balanced with action/romance and beautifully executed by L.E. Horn. This is my first novel I’ve read by this author. I was completely captivated by the storyline from start to finish, the story is entertaining and enjoyable to read. The characters are well developed and beautifully executed throughout the story. The main characters of this story are Jaz and Zyair. The chemistry between the main characters is absolutely breathtaking and undeniably irresistible. I loved getting to know both Jaz and Zyair as well as witnessing their story unfold through the pages of this book. I’m definitely going to be checking out more of this author’s work in the future. The characters of this story are entertaining, interesting and intriguing all at the same time. This novel is definitely a recommended alien romance for anyone to checkout and give it a read.

I really liked the characters—distinctive and well-developed across the board. The female lead is strong (and quite stubborn), with a great best friend as a supporting character. The three male leads—triplet brothers—are each flawed but lovable, and their personalities complement one another well. Even the secondary characters add value to the story and feel like they belong; each one plays a meaningful role in the plot.

The world-building stands out: a post-invasion, almost post-apocalyptic Earth, layered with alien planets and cultures that feel lived-in and real.

The story is plot-driven with a good balance of humor and action as well as a few spicy scenes worked in without pulling focus from the storyline. One scene in particular stands out: the female main character and one of the brothers flying a spaceship through an asteroid belt—together 😉!

Once I started reading “How to Chain Your Dragons” I didn’t want to put it down; I highly recommend it to fans of sci-fi, dragon romances.

I loved this book. 5 stars for an amazing love story!

If you are looking for a strong FMC who doesn't tolerate irrate men, who will follow her dream at all cost, and who has so much repressed love to give… then you are in the right spot. This book will take you on a journey through the stars, quite literally. Where you are introduced early on to the history of this world and how humans are no longer the most fear creatures. The book is so well written that you can vividly experience what these characters are navigating through in life. Whether that be blushing from the steamy scenes, holding your breath during intense fights, or just grinning wildly at the antics of friendly companions. I highly recommend this book if you love a reverse harem, dragons, fated-mates, and hot scenes. I hope you are ready for some fun, screams, and moans!

So glad I chose this book. It is so freaking good. So clever. The buildup allowing us insight into the individual personalities is pretty awesome. The switch from seeing words on a page, to viewing a ‘movie’ is seamless. Unique in that it is told from only Jaz and Zyair’s POV, you don’t feel any less connected to Xandros or Rhodes. Tons of action, adventure, sexy times, and hilarity. Good stuff!

This was a wild reading ride by a new-to-me author. I have to say the world building of this post alien invasion Earth was well done. The characters were so clear and engaging. I loved how feisty and determined Jaz was. She definitely wasn't any kind of pushover, no matter how bad a day she had, and she has an epically bad day... Meeting dragon shifter brothers Zyair, Xandros, and Rhodes changes everything and soon enough, they have to work together to survive. They are all mates and I enjoyed the fact that this is a plot driven story but still brings the spice. Expect to get caught up in the action, danger, betrayal, suspense, twists, witty banter, emotions and great romance when you dive into this exciting read. I'm not sure if there are more books to follow but I'll be watching for them ;D

Independent reviewer for BookSirens, I was gifted my copy of this book.

For the most part, I really REALLY enjoyed this book but my review will be short and sweet cos if I leave myself free reign, it might come across as negative and it really was a good book!

I loved Jaz. She is strong willed and determined, but really just wants to be cut a break! These dragons, though, want more from her. She isn't sure she can give it, not to the invaders of Earth.

The dragons themselves are very different, with stron personalities and differing skills and fears. Zyair, Rhodes and Xandros all want one thing: their fated mate. Finding out she is human, kinda throws a spanner in the works but they really do all go in, eventually.

I was expecting a space romp here, and I get a lot more.

BUT

I feel like there is much MUCH that was not said here. It feels like there should've been a book before this one, giving all the information about Earth being invaded and all that jazz, or Jaz! I just felt it needed MORE, you know??

It also felt like the beginning of a series, there are many characters who I want to read about, so I hope we get more, I really do.

4 good stars

Will She Get Her Freedom ? . . .

Earth was taken over by dragon shifter aliens, and it’s definitely not an improvement. Jaz is waiting for the right opportunity to escape out of there. It just so happens that they have some “cargo” that needs to be transported “unofficially”, so she just might find a way to gain her freedom somewhere along the way. The cargo turns out to be 3 naked dragons locked up as prisoners. If she gets the opportunity to escape, she definitely will. But she eventually decides she doesn’t want to leave the guys behind. Is there a way to get them all to safety somewhere? Or will she lose her own chance for freedom? Humor and spice will make this trip lots more interesting, so grab your copy and enjoy!

A great palate cleanser between other books

This book has everything you’d want in a lighter, fun & spicy, why-choose sci-fi romance. There is more plot than I originally expected, which was a nice treat, especially since the plot didn’t get in the way of the well-written and inventive spicy scenes. There is good world building, although at times it almost feels like the second in the series, rather than the first. There is also pretty good adherence to basic physics and science, given the fiction/fantasy/sci-fi genre. There are also villains you love to hate, especially when they get what’s coming to them. I’m looking forward to reading more in this world.

Full disclosure: I was given an ARC of the book, however this review is my own honest opinion

I liked this book and appreciate that it was a quick read. Jaz is a human woman living in a world controlled by drakes. However, that does not stop her from wanting a better life for herself. She has a lot of prejudice against drakes and finds herself accidentally mated to one. Over time the relationship between her and the three drakes grow. There is a lot going on in this story with plenty of action throughout. The spice is there but I found that to be one of the weakest parts of the overall story and it's spread out decently throughout. Overall, I enjoyed it and recommend it to anyone who is a fan of this author.

3.75 stars rounded up. I don't typically read sci-fi so this was new for me. Jaz is a human on an alien-occupied Earth who wants nothing more than to get away from it all. Through a series of events, she finds herself rescuing 3 dragon shifter aliens. The action was definitely interesting with the space ship chases and kidnappings. My struggle with this book was the spicy scenes. Some were okay, some were a bit much with the vibrating appendages and the glowing orbs. All of these scenes felt very clinical or detached. I didn't feel any emotional connection during those scenes so they felt a bit distracting, despite the fact that the description of the physical actions was done well.

This is my first Ellie Horn book, and I couldn’t put it down.

Human female Jaz just wants to get out from under the thumb of her brother, Kurt, and the Drakes who want to mutate her for breeding. However, when her chance to escape arrives, she realizes that being under a Drake may not be so bad. What’s even better? Them being under her. Jaz is brazen, bold, and a badass, which means Zyair, Xandros, and Rhodes think she’s the perfect female for them.

There’s action, adventure, and plenty of sexy times. All the characters are interesting—even the villains, who are gross. MVC (Most Valuable Character) goes to Sookie the hedgegopher; she was the cutest.

The only thing keeping this from a 5-star rating? We don’t get Xandros and Rhodes’ POVs, and I really wanted a peek inside their heads.

Thanks to the author and Book Sirens for this eARC.

I was really surprised to love this book as much as I did. First of all, I loved the main female character Jaz and her strength!

Second of all, I loved the world that Ellie Horn created.

This is a reverse harem book that had three Drakes finding their fated mate in the human Jaz.

Overall, this was a big sci-fi adventure with some romance. I was surprised to find that I liked the adventure as much as the romance.

I would have liked to have a bit more spice and a bit more romantic scenes. For example, more scenes with all four romantic partners.

If you like reverse harem and sci-fi adventure, you will love this book!

Jaz is a tough human woman. At 21 years old, she is supposed to be tagged, and evaluated. She avoids that by faking a tag. Her brother demands that she mates with his second in command. She mates with one of three Drake brothers accidently. She does not want to be their mate. Jaz decides she, and Ariyani are to be dropped off, after their mission is complete. They get in trouble during the run. Jaz fights together with the Drakes. There is danger, and action as they fight their enemies. She eventually mates, and bonds with the other brothers. Her body is enhanced with special powers. The storyline flowed well. Their are many twists, and turns in the plot. There is love, passion, danger, crime, and action. I enjoyed reading this book!!!!

Ellie Horn has hit it out of the ball park with this sci-fi Dragon journey in their truly talented fashion. I am a fan of all of their books and this one is great because it combines so well the great gift of fantasy creatures and sci-fi settings and travel. The angst and steam of How to Chain Your Dragons is so wonderfully laid out that you just want to read and not go to bed. There are unique twists and incredible engagement that the well developed relationships immerse you in the journey, so how do I not scream for them to dodge the next .....(no spoilers here)....I am excited to see the next book in this series. If Ellie Horn is a new author to you put her books in your list of TBR at the top. Her books are such fun to read even when chaos is afoot for or by the characters.

The very FIRST word has me laugh and each page gave me more giggles.

I loved this world … and I mean … humans and dragons and all other creatures oh my. A trip through space, other worlds and a slipstream with a name that had me tongue tied.

Jaz is a riot ..

The drakes … um … three drakes …. Yep someone is lucky. Tall .. toned .. with wings AND a tail that can be used for fun.

And I have a new word to use … shafting … much cleaner then my other choice word 😂

For sure looking forward to more from this author.

This Sci fi romance is intense. The first few chapters are letting you get familiar with the situation on Earth. The aliens, the gangs and all the stress involved with all the before. I liked this female character- even at the first of the book she was strong and resourceful. She did not like playing by the rules and always had a trick up her sleeve. Once the heart of the story starts you applaud her for her choices. The 3 Drakes have such unique personalities. Each of them alone are interesting but all 3 together make a perfect trio. This is not an instant love - more a slow burn but one the fire is lite hold on !
The drama and fight scenes fit well in the story. You cheer for the good guys and curse the bad ones. Such a good read!.

Interesting story. Jaz is in the market when she encounters two Drakes that she doesn't recognize. They tag her and she keeps remembering them. The next time she sees them she is transporting them to an unknown destination for the Trazier Clan. Zyair is the alpha of the group and can't forget Jaz, Xandor and Rhodes are his brothers. She will scheme to try to save the Drakes before they land. This book is full of drama, danger, mixed emotions as Jaz wants her freedom but can't get rid of the connection that she has with each of the drakes, and a happy ending.
