So Shall You Reap: A twist-packed whodunit bursting with suspense and shocking surpises

Rate this book

A family of serial killers.
Five friends.
One explosive encounter.

Belle Jackson was sixteen years old when a brutal attack mutated her once-gentle life into one of vengeance and no apologies. Now changed, she felt it was her duty to rid the world of all necessary, and some not-so-necessary, evils. And nothing would stand in her way, not even those closest to her. Her husband and son knew what she was doing, but they didn’t stop her - they helped her.
They were family, after all.

In the northeastern quadrant of Minnesota lies the colossal Superior National Forest—a dense, shadowy wilderness four times larger than Rhode Island. It encompasses some of the nation’s most desolate and remote areas and is home to many of the deadliest creatures known to mankind.
It was here, then, in a tiny cabin concealed among the thick trees, that Belle and her family found retirement. Their dangerous way of life now behind them, they chose to spend the remainder of their lives in peace and solitude, hidden from humanity. And for nearly half a century, seclusion was theirs.

But then, five classmates on the other side of the state kill an innocent man and find themselves pursued by the police and in desperate need to flee the country. Their twisting journey takes them deep into the murky Superior National Forest, where hiding out proves to be more dangerous than they ever anticipated.
Then, in the dead of night, deep in the middle of nowhere, they stumble upon a small cabin with a faint light glowing within. And they knock.

And when killers meet, all hell breaks loose.

My Thoughts
Alright, so this book started out as a bit of a slow burn for me, with the story taking its time to settle into place. It wasn’t until about halfway through that I really felt pulled in. From there, though, I finished the book in one final sitting.
I really enjoyed the ending, there were many twists I did not see coming. They kept coming, resulting in an emotional whiplash until the very end.

I would like to give a huge thank you to BookSirens & Mark Jenkins for providing me with an ARC of So Shall You Reap in exchange for my honest review.

This was simply an excellent story! I enjoyed the way Mark was able to take these simultaneous storylines and bring them together so seamlessly. The alternating timelines that went back and forth between events that occurred in previous years and more recent times during the podcasts interviews on “Murder She Heard,” truly brought the story together. I truly feel that I read three books in one, yet all the storylines worked so perfectly together.

This book had me clutching my pearls at 3%! It literally took no time to draw me in, and it kept my attention the entire time. He really dives into how one incident can alter the course of a person‘s path sometimes in deadly ways, as the FMC in this story could definitely star on an episode of snapped. What started out as ole fashion vigilante justice, turned into something much more sinister! As descriptive as some of these scenes were, I truly felt as if I could see it playing out in my head. And talking about some shocking curved balls? I could barely get over the previous twist, before the author is like BAM here’s another one.

Moral of the story is..
1. This is one of the best books I’ve read this year & absolutely going in my top 5 of 2025.
2. Avoid Superior National Forest at all cost!
3. Preorder this book ASAP!

I had the absolute honor of being an ARC reader for So Shall You Reap, and let me just say—Mark Jenkins has done it again! This is the third book I’ve read by him, and each time, I find myself completely lost in the world he creates. His writing pulls you in so deeply, it feels like you’re right there alongside the characters, living every twist and turn.

And WOW, the twists. Damn those twists! haha Just when I think I’ve got it figured out, Jenkins throws in a badass curveball I never see coming. The ending of this book left me completely stunned—in the best way EVER. It’s rare for a book to keep me guessing the entire time, but that’s exactly what makes this story so remarkable.

Honestly, this book deserves a movie adaptation. It’s gripping, emotional, suspenseful, and downright cinematic. If it’s not already on your TBR, add it now!! You won’t regret it.

Highly recommend everything by Mark Jenkins—he’s officially on my auto-buy list. Pre-order now!! Release Date: July 29.

So Shall You Reap by Mark Jenkins. Release date 29th July!

I'd just like to start by saying thank you so much to Mark for the ARC copy. It's always an honour to read a book before it's published.

Let me tell you, the prologue grabs your attention immediately and sets you up for what is an extremely wild ride with lots of twists and turns.

Belle Jackson is a formidable young woman who knows what she wants; she chooses Harvey, a shy guy who's immediately smitten with her. Belle suffers a horrific attack that leaves her not only an outcast but also on a murderous path to rid the world of sexual predators. What starts out as a mission to avenge becomes something she develops a taste for and cannot stop. Harvey supports her killing streak, and in time, they have a son whom she trains in her image. His mission is to carry on her legacy.

Belle and Harvey live out their lives in the secluded Superior National Forest. This is where Mark Jenkins' descriptive flair takes you deep into that forest with his characters; he's absolutely amazing at setting the scene so vividly.

Just when you thought things couldn't get any crazier, a group of school kids decide to rob a bank! When the gun goes off and the security guard dies, they go on the run, ending up in the Superior National Forest themselves, cold, tired, injured, and hungry. What happens when a family of serial killers and five runaways meet? Read it and find out!

Y’ALL!! So Shall You Reap is the kind of book you crack open “just for a chapter” and then next thing you know it’s three hours later and you’re one eye twitch away from texting everyone you know, “YOU HAVE TO READ THIS.”

Mark Jenkins doesn’t just write atmosphere—he builds it around you. You’ll feel the damp chill of the Minnesota forest seep into your bones. You’ll smell pine needles, fear, and maybe just a little blood. And when Belle Jackson appears on the page? Whew. I felt the temperature drop.

Let’s talk Belle. At sixteen, she transformed from innocent victim to righteous, methodical menace—and she never looked back. After the first time my jaw dropped—it was like gravity took over then one shock led to another, And that final twist? I may never get my jaw off the floor.

Each chapter is a breadcrumb you absolutely have to follow. There’s no lull, no filler—just escalating tension and pitch-perfect pacing. Five clueless fugitives knock on the wrong door, and the tension coils so tight it hums. Killers vs. killers in the dark woods?

This book is wild, relentless, and deliciously dark—with a touch of wicked fun that had me grinning through the chaos.

If you like dark thrillers, killer families, and the feeling that something very bad is about to knock on your door… you need this book.

Just maybe don’t read it alone in the woods.

I was so lucky to receive an ARC of So Shall You Reap. My very first ARC experience, and I am thrilled to report it is absolutely worthy of every single one of those 5 stars!

So Shall You Reap is an absolutely gripping roller-coaster ride from the first page right through to the last!

Mark Jenkins is so skilful in his clever descriptive prose that captures this very visual reader's imagination, bringing the scenes and characters to life (and gruesome death!) leaving me unable to stop reading until the wee hours of the morning!

And a HUGE double win for me was the fun of finding TWO Easter eggs! A very cool tie-in to one of my favourite FREIDA books AND another Easter egg from one of Mark's own brilliant books, Do Unto Others. That one is another 5 star must read if you haven't read it yet!

I am hoping there will be a sequel to this book because I really need more! Pretty please, Mark?! 🙏

Conceptually an absolutely tense and gripping story, full of action and even horror, featuring a ruthless serial-killer family living in a secluded part of Michigan’s Superior Forest. The background information is excellent, and I initially even planned to give it a 5★ rating.

In the second part, however, a group of kids who had robbed a bank entered the picture, and as they made their way through the dense forest, the story began to drag and at times felt more like a young adult adventure.

The latter part didn’t work for me, as the absurdities and inaccuracies kept piling up, leaving me confused and disappointed by the open ending. Without giving away too much, just a few examples: how could this family stay under the radar for so many years and survive in such a remote area? How could anyone survive, even for a few minutes, a fall into a deep, steep ravine? Some plot elements also felt misleading, and a few small errors distracted me — for instance, the prologue refers to “plants and flowers” as part of the fauna instead of the flora.

A strong start that unfortunately lost coherence toward the end. Brilliant premise, but the execution lost me along the way.

I absolutely LOVED this book! The writing pulled me in from the first page and kept me hooked until the very end. The back-and-forth perspectives gave the story so much depth, and I really enjoyed how the history unfolded piece by piece. The pacing was perfect — suspenseful, intense, and impossible to put down. Mark Jenkins is an amazing storyteller, and this book proves it. Highly recommend!

“So Shall You Reap” by Mark Jenkins is an absolutely wild ride through darkness, desperation, and dread. This twisted story follows a group of friends who, after making a fatal mistake, flee into the depths of the Superior National Forest—only to stumble upon something far worse than the law: a secluded family of serial killers who’ve remained hidden for years.

Jenkins' writing is nothing short of immaculate. His vivid, atmospheric storytelling pulled me deep into the forest alongside the characters. I could practically hear the trees creak and feel the panic rising with each passing moment. The pacing is relentless, the tension suffocating, and the twists—jaw-dropping.

I couldn’t stop reading. I flew through the pages until my eyes physically couldn’t take it anymore, and even then, the story haunted me the entire next day until I could finally finish it. It’s rare to find a book that gets under your skin like this.

This is hands down one of my top favorites of 2025.
Dark, unforgettable, and brilliantly told—this is one of those thrillers that lingers long after the last page.

Harvey has the best job working at the local arcade. He takes care of the machines and empties the tokens as part of his daily tasks. Then one day he meets Belle and his life is completed. Now he has the unenviable task of getting her family’s permission. After a very traumatic event, Belle’s life is turned upside down and she’s thrust into survival mode. Harvey is forced to make one of the toughest choices in his life. How far would he go for the woman he loves?

Fast forward about 40 years, and a group of teenagers take matters into their own hands to help one of their own. One mistake in the plan leads them on a race to freedom. However, things are not always as they seem and as the group takes refuge, they soon learn that karma always comes back and “as you sow, so shall you reap”. Actions can have dire consequences.

I absolutely loved Mark’s other books and I was sure there was no way to top Do Unto Others. How wrong I was! The book has a few timelines that at first glance appear vaguely connected, but then Mark expertly weaves them together with a web of lies and secrets. The twists just keep coming and every time you think you’re on the right track, you’re not. There is even a Freida McFadden nod thrown in that fits the storyline perfectly.

If I could give this book 10 stars out of 5, I would. Don’t miss this one!

𝐈 𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐧'𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐈 𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐝. 𝐆𝐨𝐝, 𝐈 𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐝.

Intense and atmospheric, SO SHALL YOU REAP begins with the sad story of sixteen-year-old Belle Jackson, a beautiful girl saving herself for marriage. When she's violently assaulted by one of her father's employees, something inside her shattered. An innocent girl died that night, but a vengeful woman rose up to take her place. People have to pay when they do something wrong, and Belle became the one to ensure justice was meted out.

She grew up to marry the boy who stayed by her side after the attack, and they welcomed a son. Because Bell has continued her crusade of her unusual rand of justice, the family makes their home in a modest cabin hidden away in Minnesota's Superior National Forest. All was well for a time.

Belle and her family have no idea what's coming their way. Across the country, a group of five classmates kill an innocent man and are being hunted by the police. Their desperate getaway takes them deep into the forest, where they lose all sense of place and direction. Then like something out of a fairy tale, they see a small cabin in the dead of night, almost beckoning with its faint, warm glow coming from within. They approach and knock, confident that they can handle whoever may be inside.

It won't be the fairy tale they envisioned. When killers meet, blood will be spilled. This is the author's third release, and he's just getting twistier each time. The characterization, plotting, and pacing were all perfectly done. I can't wait to see what else he has in store for us! Many thanks to the author for the early gifted copy. Look for this one July 29, 2025.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
WOW!! An amazing, intense & jaw dropping thriller story! This book has so many fantastic twists, turns and surprises!! There’s also darkness and lots of craziness going on!
It’s cool how the book is split up into 3 parts-
The first part begins with Belle and Harvey who fall in love and wind up moving to a secluded cabin to live a different type of lifestyle.

Part 2 focuses on a group of high school friends who end up robbing a bank to help get money for one of the friend’s parents. Unfortunately, things don’t go as smoothly as they had hoped and they have to leave town.

Part 3 shows what happens to the group of kids once they have left town and are trying to make it into Canada. This trip involves making their way through a large forest. Luckily they come across a cabin…😳😳

This book is full of shockers and situations that I didn’t see coming, at all! I almost fell out of my chair a few times!!
It’s a very well written story and has such an entertaining and exciting storyline. There’s great character development, with lots of secrets, lies and of course murder!!

**This is a must read!!** Grab it now!! **

For starters, this would absolutely make a great audiobook!

This is my first Mark Jenkins book, and it definitely won’t be my last. This was such a quick read for me. I didn’t want to put it down. I was engaged from the prologue and read this in one sitting.

This had alternating timelines, there was a Podcast, and yes, at times it could be a little confusing, but honestly as the story progressed, it all worked and made sense.

I really liked how, I KNEW the final twist sooo early on, and I KNEW who was killing in present times, AND YET, Jenkins had me second-guessing myself one too many times. And then there were the twists that I just didn’t see coming.

Atmospheric, heart-pounding. I felt like I was right there with how descriptive it was.

And I liked the little shout out to Freida McFadden … iykyk

I enjoyed this one and would recommend.

I was extremely disappointed in this book. It could get rather confusing at times. Especially the podcast parts. It could sometimes be hard to tell who was speaking. There were a lot of moving parts with this book. It was kinda like you were reading more than one book at times. I held out high hope that if I just stuck through it, it would all come together at the end! Well some of it did although I’ll say I felt like it didn’t personally fit that great. You also had parts that were never rediscussed. Having said that, it makes you wonder why it was included in the book in the first place if it had no relevance to the story?? Then the ending came and it just wasn’t complete it left questions unanswered and the story unfinished.

Mark, all I can say is—WOW!

This is officially my new favorite book of yours. With the other two, I couldn’t decide which one took the top spot, but that doesn’t matter now. This one easily claims it.

The story gripped me from the first chapter and never let go. The characters were incredibly well-developed, and every twist hit with perfect timing. You laid out the plot with such clarity that I wasn't left questioning things, just fully immersed. And that ending? You nailed it.

I’m not great at writing reviews or putting into words exactly how much I enjoy a book, but trust me, I was hooked. Amazing work, Mark.

This was such an interesting story filled with twists and turns. I loved how the author blended multiple timelines, weaving them together through a web of lies and secrets. At first, the timelines seem only loosely connected, but as the story unfolds, everything clicks into place in such a clever way.

One timeline follows Belle Jackson and the tragic event that turned her life upside down, while another is set in the present day, with a group of teenagers who botch a crime and go on the run. Nothing is as it seems, and no one can truly be taken at face value - which makes the book all the more addictive.

The twists just keep coming, and every time you think you’ve figured it out, you realize you haven’t. It’s captivating from start to finish, with an intriguing storyline spanning 40 years. A gripping, twisty read that kept me guessing until the very end.

Intense, chilling, and impossible to put down, So Shall You Reap is a dark and haunting thriller with a fierce heroine at its core. Belle’s transformation from victim to vigilante is both powerful and terrifying, and her family’s deadly past adds layers of tension to the story. Set in a remote forest cabin, the atmosphere is thick with suspense—and when a group of reckless fugitives stumbles into their world, everything spirals out of control. Gripping, violent, and unforgettable—a must-read for fans of sharp, edge-of-your-seat thrillers!

Starting in the past and working it's way to present times this novel is captivating from start to finish. There is quite a bit going on but all the parts and pages are needed to follow this tale without missing important information. The twists are plentiful so pay attention. Mark weaves this web so masterfully you won't be able to stop turning the pages.

“So Shall You Reap”by Mark Jenkins is a gripping psychological thriller that masterfully blends suspense, betrayal, and survival. The story follows Harvey and Belle Jackson, a notorious serial killer duo, and Ginger and her friends, whose desperate journey spirals into a nightmare of murder, deception, and shocking revelations. Set in the dark and foreboding Superior National Forest, the narrative builds relentless tension, keeping readers on edge.
Written in a third person omniscient perspective, the book delves deeply into the characters vulnerabilities, secrets, and motivations. Ginger emerges as a compelling protagonist, showcasing resilience and resourcefulness as she fights to survive and uncover the truth.
Jenkins excels in creating vivid imagery, from the eerie forest to the explosive climax, and maintains a relentless pace throughout the story.
While some characters arc feel under explored, the intricate plot and shocking twists compensate, making the book a chilling exploration of karma, legacy, and the lengths one will go to protect their own.
Fans of psychological thrillers and dark family dramas will find “So Shall You Reap” an unforgettable read.

This is my first Mark Jenkins read and let me say that man is a writing genius. The moment I cracked the book opened I found myself in a choke hold gasping for air. I felt the intensity of the story with every page turn. It was thrilling and gritty. There were some moments that had me with the feels. Very descriptive with the wording where as you could literally picture everything written as if it were watching versus reading a book. The twist kept on twisting all the way to the very last page. Easily a fan favorite.

Thank you Booksirens and Mark Jenkins for the ARC. This review is that of my own.

Starting off by saying I received this book as an ARC! Thank you so much for the opportunity to read this book early!

Woah, the first paragraph DEFINITELY had me intrigued and the prologue alone was an insane hook!
The description of this book 1000% doesn’t do it justice because wow this book was so good right off the bat. I loved the podcast element to start off the story. The characters all feel very rich with a lot of depth. It switches from present day and the past, slowly piecing the story together as you go. Then suddenly you are with an entirely different cast of characters and honestly feels like a different book for a while. All the while you are trying to figure out how it fits into the original story and where it’s headed. There were so many awesome twists and turns that added so much depth and mystery while also catching you off guard in the best way. I loved every aspect of how this story was woven together and the ending left me reeling and hoping this story was going to continue into another book. I had my suspicions about a few characters and the book then completely throws you off and makes you think you may have just been to haste to think that and then when it’s revealed I had a “I knew it, I’m not crazy” moment but not in the “this was too easy to guess” way. The writing was absolutely incredible and honestly felt completely different than I’m used to. I thought the way it switched perspectives of characters was so fluid you never felt any snags or adjustments were needed to know what was going on or who’s head you were in.
All in all I had an absolute blast reading this story and would HIGHLY recommend if you like mystery/thriller books! I can’t wait to read more from this author, he definitely deserves more recognition!

Sixteen-year-old Belle Jackson’s life was ripped apart by violence, and she refused to stay a victim. What started as a desperate act of self-defense became a mission. Belle, along with her husband Harvey and their son, decided the world needed fewer monsters and they were more than willing to clean things up themselves. After years in a remote cabin in Minnesota’s Superior National Forest, they’re forced out of hiding when five teens on the run accidentally knock on the wrong door. When one group of killers meets another, survival becomes a matter of instinct, revenge, and very bad luck.

Spillin’ the Book Tea:
Okay, listen. I was in the doctor’s office reading this and gasped—out loud—at Chapter 12. People stared. No regrets. It hit harder than I was ready for… and yes, the character's name was Carla. Coincidence? Maybe. But I did confirm Mark Jenkins doesn’t know any other Carlas. So, basically, I’m book-famous now.

Now let’s talk about this wild ride. Mark Jenkins has released three books, and I’ve given all of them 5++++ stars, but So Shall You Reap is my favorite yet. Not just because of the Carla moment either. It reads like two stories in one: the origin of Belle and Harvey and then the chaos that unfolds when five kids end up on their property.

Belle and Harvey’s story starts at an arcade where Harvey works. Harvey says Belle saved him. Their bond is unshakable, deep, and intense, but don’t mistake this for a romance. This is about survival, justice, and a whole lot of rage. Belle was only sixteen when her world shattered, and she didn’t just pick up the pieces. She turned them into weapons. She’s a vengeance-fueled force of nature, and honestly, I was rooting for her. Up to a point.

Then you think the story’s wrapping up and boom... plot twist. That was only halfway. The second half introduces five classmates who make some very bad choices, end up in the wrong forest, and knock on the wrong damn door. The tension from that point on? Unreal. You feel like you’re holding your breath the whole time.

Mark Jenkins doesn’t give you a chance to relax. Every chapter keeps you guessing. I love trying to figure things out as I read, but with this one, I gave up, and I loved that. It’s unpredictable, fast, and violent in a way that feels earned.

Quote that still haunts me: “I didn’t die right away, but I wish I had. God, I wish I had.”

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

The Vibes it Brings:
🌲 Isolated cabin in the woods
🧨 Killers colliding
👊 Vengeance meets survival
💀 Serial killer family
🧠 Psychological tension
⏱️ Nonstop action
🚫 No safe choices

📚 Two stories in one

TL;DR:
So Shall You Reap is vicious, intense, and impossible to put down. Belle is a storm you never see coming, and once it hits, you're trapped. Mark Jenkins doesn’t miss, and this one? It's his best yet.
