A welcome return to the book world from this author and I was keen to see what Tara Lyons had come back with……what I found was a tense, dark and atmospheric thriller centred around a street, who lives there and what relationships form….and turn into

It is quite dark and chilling and there is an undercurrent of menace throughout, mainly to do with the various characters and their intentions but also the intensity of the relationship between the main 2 characters Ruby and Mike, there is something simmering away between them all the way through, the subtleties of them both were interesting to read, but then the whole book was, the peculiar neighbour to be avoided, the nosey one who never left her front window, even old Mrs Shah who only ventured out to the Book Club…and as for new resident Henry, well he catches more than an eye or 2

Loved the Book Club parts and that Ruby was an author, also liked the closeness between her and her Gran

Great writing and perfect psychological twists and turns mean the author is back 100% and has given us a top read

Tara Lyons is back and back with a bang! The Perfect Stranger is the perfect psychological thriller.
I have read everything this author has written and come to expect nothing but excellent books from her. So when I managed to get hold of a copy, I didn't think twice before sitting down and getting stuck in.
The characters were all created so well. I invested in Ruby from the start, although I did doubt her after a while. I still felt for her every step of the way. As her paranoia grew, so did mine! I really was by her side.
So many twists and a conclusion that just topped this tale off perfectly! I can't wait to see what Tara Lyons writes next. I shall be waiting.

Ruby is content with life, her partner is successful and she’s living writing her novels. But in the space of weeks, her life is turned upside down. And what a ride she took me on!!

I really felt for Ruby. Being left for days alone, limited contact from Mike whilst he’s away. I’ve got to admit, I didn’t like him – he is a bit of a tool (aka an absolute tool) in his attitude. I was willing Ruby to get rid of him and start afresh. But she loves him!

The chapters from Ruby’s stalker were a little unnerving. They didn’t give anything away to their identity – was it someone Ruby trusted, someone new in her life or a complete unknown. Their narrative gave me the creeps which made me want to rescue Ruby even more.

Lyons has crafted a tense thriller that has me on edge from start to finish, even the epilogue had a chill to it. You can cut through the tense that leapt off the page with a knife. It’s been a while since I’ve read something new from Tara Lyons but this book is right where she left off with The Paramedic’s Daughter – packed with tension and intrigue and I was left guessing right to the end! Welcome back Tara!!

WOW I absolutely loved The Perfect Stranger by Tara Lyon’s. It’s a chilling, tense exploration of obsession, betrayal, and the terrifying ease with which reality can unravel behind closed doors.

Ruby’s world begins to shift the moment her charming new neighbour Henry enters her life, what starts as temptation quickly curdles into something much darker. Tara Lyons masterfully captures the slow erosion of trust and the creeping dread that comes with not knowing who to believe. I even found myself wondering if Ruby overactive imagination was just that! The tension doesn’t hit you all at once. It creeps in, first one missing item, one unlocked door, one carefully placed note at a time.

Chilling but so brilliantly plotted, each page is brimming with menace. But What truly sets this book apart wasn’t just the suspense, though it’s brilliantly crafted, but the emotional impact. The isolation, the gaslighting, the cracks in Ruby’s relationship with boyfriend Mike, all build toward a sense of claustrophobic paranoia. BEWARE it’s not always the monsters in the shadows you need to fear, but the ones standing right beside you.

A tense, emotionally charged thriller that cuts deep, The Perfect Stranger is a reminder that sometimes the most dangerous lies are the ones we tell ourselves. Perfect for readers who love psychological thrillers that mess with your mind and leave you questioning everything.

This book grabbed me from the first page and didn’t let go until the end!
Ruby thinks her life and relationship are happy and stable until Mike gets a promotion. This means he has to work in Spain on a regular basis, leaving Ruby increasingly anxious. Coupled with some strange goings on, the tension builds to the explosive finale.
A really great thriller

Ruby and Mike live in a quiet cul-de-sac and have very little to do with their neighbours. They are a content couple, just ticking along; not married and trying for a family. Both are invested in their work, Ruby being a self-published author. Although Mike’s company are making redundancies, he is offered a promotion but it will involve him travelling abroad regularly for a number of days at a time. Ruby tries to fill the gap left when Mike is away by catching up with her long-term friends, but it’s just not enough. Ruby begins to integrate herself into the neighbourhood, chatting with the neighbours and joining their WhatsApp and Book Groups.
One of Ruby’s neighbours Henry, is both charming and single. Filling the void left by one of Mike’s work trips, Ruby strikes up a platonic friendship with Henry. Ruby is feeling vulnerable; she is sure that she is being followed and a stranger is hanging around outside her house. Ruby then starts to notice things moving and going missing in her home; and she is feeling anxious that she is in the house alone yet again. Ruby knows that if she confides in Mike, he will be dismissive, which draws her closer to Henry and she falls into his arms and bed.
Soon things come to a head and Ruby discovers the truth, and her relationships are vastly different from what she believed. Secrets are revealed which have an enduring effect on her, now and for ever.
I was eager to read this book having loved the others I have read by Tara. This did mean that I had high expectations and I am delighted to say that I was not disappointed. I thoroughly enjoyed it and found myself reading into the early hours. It’s not often that you feel so invested in the protagonist as I did with Ruby, feeling such empathy for her and really liking her. Often, I find myself beginning to dislike the main character as they start to exhibit some negative traits, and although I waited for this, it never came with Ruby. I really loved her character and was championing her to get together with Henry. There are some brilliant reveals in this book which are completely realistic, I never saw them coming. I was totally immersed and invested in this story. This book has been a while coming but was so worth the wait. Well done on such a great book Tara, you nailed it!

Okay I was so undecided on how to rate this book but after consideration I think it's only fair to give this 5 stars. The reason I hear you ask...well this book made me SUPER uncomfortable, and yes that is a personal thing so in hindsight the author totally did their job in translating the fear factor through the pages....so who am I to deduct a star?

So the premise I won't go over because there is nothing more annoying that a review that just states the synopsis so I will give you my opinion. Ruby is our main charater and she lives with her long term boyfriend Mike. Now straight off the bat I loath Mike as a character however I think most people wouldn't have many good things to say about this guy. Ruby is living her happy but quiet life and is under the impression that all is good in her world. However, before too long things turn sour. Her new neighbour Henry becomes a friend, but with Mike increasingly away from home with work more and more strange things start happening at home. Ruby pretty quickly starts to question herself and whether these things are actually happening or whether it's her own mind playing tricks.

Now although I wasn't a huge fan of Mike, I did feel a little bit sorry for Ruby however I also found myself questioning why she wasn't standing up for herself more. More unnerving was the fact that Ruby begins to feel like she is being watched. Now the author describes an alleyway close to Ruby's home that I swear to god she could have written about a place near to where I live. That alongside the consistently creepy elements of the strange going on made my skin crawl at times (hence being so unnerved by this book).

This book definitely has an edge to it and one that could make you totally question your own sanity (especially if like me you were reading in the pitch black and home alone!). This is definitely a tense thriller and one that I thoroughly enjoyed (even if I didn't like all the characters). It's great to see Tara back writing in this genre and I would totally recommend this and can't wait to see what she comes up with next

Stranger Danger
The Perfect Stranger is an exciting new psychological thriller by Tara Lyons. This one will keep you guessing until very end.
Ruby and her partner Mike have been together for six years. For the past three years Ruby has been working at home as a self- published writer of fantasy novels while Mike also works at home although Ruby is not quite sure what he does. All that she knows is that he works for a multi- million dollar gambling company that makes and supplies machines to large casinos all over the world. That Ruby knows so little bit about his work tells you a bit about their relationship. The one thing that Ruby really wants is a child. She had hoped that all the time together during the pandemic would speed those dreams along, but her dream has not come to be.
Because of the pandemic Ruby had never ventured out to meet any of their neighbors. When Mike tells her that new role in the company will require frequent trips to Spain, Ruby decides it is time to meet a few of the neighbors. These include Patty the “social director” of the neighborhood,” Henry, the handsome new single resident, Norman who rarely socializes or leaves his house and his nephew, Billy who is also rarely seen.
As Ruby starts to spend more time with the neighbors as Mike’s absences become more frequent, strange things begin to happen. Ruby feels like she is being followed. Doors that she knows that she locked are open when she returns. Things begin to go missing. Then she feels as if someone was in her bedroom while she was sleeping. Then the notes start to appear.
Is someone really stalking Ruby? Is someone gaslighting her or is this all really in her imagination? I must admit that I did not figure it all out before the answers were revealed. If you love a good psychological thriller that really leads you along this one is for you. Pick this book up to be kept guessing until the very end.

The Perfect Stranger is my first 5* read of the year, I absolutely loved it. It has a fabulous pace and just the right amount of tension in all the right places. It’s one of those books where you just keep telling yourself ‘one more chapter before lights out’ and the next thing you know, it’s 2am!

Without giving away any spoilers, Ruby, a writer, and her partner Mike, live in a small but active community in a pleasant residential road. They have been in a relationship for six years and Ruby is very much hoping that one day they will start a family. They tend to keep themselves to themselves, rarely interacting with their neighbours.

When Mike’s job calls him away abroad, Ruby finds their home too quiet without him, and is encouraged to let down her guard. She inadvertently becomes part of the book club and WhatsApp group that some of her neighbours run. Soon strange happenings set her on edge. Is she being watched? Has someone been inside her home whilst she is sleeping? Where is the notebook and pen that she always keeps by her bedside? The loss of her beloved grandmother casts her further adrift, whilst dealing with her grief she is also trying to fathom out who could be stalking her and to fight down her fascination with her neighbour, the delicious Henry. With very little support from Mike, Ruby is forced to take a path that she previously would not have considered with tragic consequences.

The character of Ruby was very real, beautifully developed and depicted, I loved her relationship with her Gran, everything was so seamlessly interwoven with the main storyline so you felt ‘real time’ as you are reading it. This is the first novel from Tara Lyons that I have read, and it certainly won’t be the last. I’m now going back to her earlier books.

What I can I say but pick up The Perfect Stranger for the perfect read, it’s an exceptional psychological thriller.

The Perfect Stranger by Tara Lyons was an excellent back and I love this authors books. Her latest book had everything, great characters, lots of twists and turns throughout and a great story that will have you hooked from the very first few pages till the very end. The Perfect Stranger is not a book to read as you are just about to go to sleep and in your house/flat etc on your own! with every creek or bang you will be wondering what that noise was. . . . . . .

Ruby and Mike live in a quiet neighbourhood and they have both built a quiet and happy life together . . . . .what could ever go wrong?

But, this neighbourhood is hiding lots of big secrets and who can they trust?

Mike gets a big promotion which keeps him away from home. Ruby becomes friends with a charming new neighbour, Henry. As their friendship grows a forbidden connection ignites something Ruby has never felt before, and it also unleashes something sinister, and leaves her questioning everything she thought she ever wanted.. . . .

Quick! I need to turn the pages over to find out what happens next! This book is So good. . . .

Now, strange things start happen and items goes missing, doors become unlocked and a chilling note left behind.

Who is doing this to Ruby? and why?

But, what Ruby’s fears are so real!

Ruby is now trapped in a nightmare of manipulation and deceit, she has No one she can turn to. . . . She could never tell her Husband Mike!

Now, secrets are surfacing and cracks in her relationships are showing!
Ruby soon realises danger isn’t always found in the shadows. . . . . . .

WoW. . . . This book was a page turning and a great read. I loved it. "BANG! what the hell was that! lol"

I highly recommend this book.

Ruby is a person who likes to live a relatively quiet life. She likes to keep herself to herself and lives for her writing. She has hopes and dreams like we all do but they don’t seem to be forthcoming and her marriage to Mike isn’t quite how she hoped it would be. She has some demons which she struggles with and at times I wanted to give her a good shake to see what was right in front of her.

Throughout the story you never know quite who to trust. Some characters are likeable, others definitely not as much, yet I was constantly swapping my mind as to whether any of them could be the one behind the strange things that were happening to Ruby and in her home. At times I was even doubting poor Ruby as to whether it was all in her mind!

I liked the setting of the close knit neighbourhood where you never really know what goes on behind closed doors. The gossiping as people do, the whatsapp group and the monthly book club. It just made the story even more intriguing as we are fed snippets of the characters lives with some surprising revelations.

The Perfect Stranger will certainly have you asking yourself the question of how well you know the people around you. The pacing is gentle to start with whilst luring you in, then before you know it you have been sucked right in and racing through the pages to the all important finale which did not disappoint. There were times when I kept forgetting to breath as well as jumping up and down on the edge of my seat in anticipation of what was coming next. A fabulously dark and twisty read that will send your pulse soaring!

During Covid, Ruby lost her mum, and has struggled to cope since she found her. Every week, Ruby goes to see her Gran in the nursing home.

Ruby and Mike have a good relationship and live together in a rented home on a close. Ruby is trying to fall pregnant, but every month is difficult for her, as every test is negative.

When Mike gets promoted at work, Ruby panics when he says he has to work a few days in Spain each month, but knows she has to let him go.

Once Mike starts working abroad, everything starts to change for Ruby. At night, every noise in the house scares her, she’s sure she can hear someone in the house, but no one is there.

With Mike away more often, Ruby finally starts to chat with all her neighbours, and enjoys their company. She realises that she spends too much time on her own or just with Mike.

Goodness me, what a dark and tense read this is! I had to keep putting the book down and having a break, my heart kept racing and I found myself feeling scared for Ruby. I started questioning every noise I heard late at night too!

The characters were intriguing and believable. I found the neighbours reminded me of people I have lived near over the years.

The author has the intensity needed for a psychological thriller down to perfection. I never knew what was coming next and found a lot of the story creepy, so many secrets and lies to untangle.

The Perfect Stranger is such an all-consuming psychological thriller that had me reading and reading and reading. I thought about it constantly and completely raced through it! Ruby and Mike live a quiet life, satisfied with their easygoing routine. But when Mike accepts a promotion at work and is away for days at a time, things change for Ruby. Not only does she suffer intense loneliness, but strange things start to happen. Someone is going in her house. Someone is messing with her, she’s sure of it. When she starts to meet her neighbours, her life changes in good ways and bad. How well can you really know the people you share a street with?

Ruby’s paranoia, her fear of being watched starts to control her life and oh my god it was everything. That consistent unnerving feeling I had, the deep character development, the messy relationships, the emotional depth, all of it was so cleverly and brilliantly written. I suspected everyone at one point or another and I adored the direction it took. It’s such an addictive, twisty, chilling read you won’t want to part with, but there’s a serious, thought-provoking side too that will tug at your heart. Thriller lovers, put Tara on your radar! 👏

“The dark figure moves easily, like something from The Matrix […] . And then, at the mouth of the alleyway, the figure slows to a stroll and looks up at me. I can’t see their face, but it’s as if their eyes are boring into me.”

Ruby and Mike live in a close with an active community but they’ve always kept themselves to themselves and don’t really know their neighbours, other than the nicknames they’ve given them like “the weird one”. They’ve been together for six years and are hoping to start a family. But when Mike gets a promotion at work, which involves regular work trips to Spain, Ruby feels very alone and finds the quiet in the house rather overwhelming. Then things she can’t explain start to happen: her notebook goes missing, a door she locked before is now unlocked, a note lands on her mat - who is doing this and who is watching her? Because Ruby is convinced that someone definitely is!

As soon as I picked up this thriller, I just couldn’t put it down and had to know what was going on. I liked Ruby and I also really liked her Gran. This was such an easy read, with short chapters, it would make the perfect book to take on holiday with you this summer.

Who is the perfect stranger who is watching Ruby? Having moved to a new area just before COVID, Ruby was content to live her life with Mike, and have little to do with her neighbours. A successful author, her life would be good if only she and Mike could conceive a longed for baby, and if he wasn’t forced to work away so much. When a new neighbour moves into a nearby property, she is ashamed by the instant attraction she feels for him. Worse still, it is obviously reciprocated. Meanwhile, she starts to get to know, and like, the neighbours whom she had previously avoided. That is, all except Norman and his strange nephew, Billy. This is an interesting novel, with plenty of twists to keep the reader’s attention.

Do not read this book alone in your house!

This is a cleverly plotted domestic thriller, where Ruby begins to feel she is being watched whilst her partner is away on business, before things start to go missing in her house. Set on a suburban cul-de-sac, it questions how well we know any of our neighbours and is very relatable. Tara Lyons moves between the watched and the watcher in an unsettling way, and brilliantly ratchets up the tension before a shocking denouement.

For fans of superior thrillers who like a gripping page turner (and then a sleepless night!) this is the book for you.

An intriguing domestic thriller ideal for a day at the beach.
We have Ruby, an author, and Mike living a quiet life until Ruby finally starts to get to know her neighbours.
When sinister feelings and events start happening, Ruby doesn't know who to trust.
While I enjoyed this book, I didn't find myself tearing through it, and while there was tension, I wasn't on the edge of my seat.
The end was tied up neatly and I'd definitely recommend this one if you are looking for a quick read.
My thanks to Bloodhound Books for the ARC.

Tara Lyons certainly knows how to write a tense psychological thriller.
Ruby and Mike are a seemingly content couple. they don't bother with their neighbours, Ruby starts associating with the neighbours when Mark begins working away for his job. So many secrets in this neighbourhood. Ruby senses she is being watched. At this point I had to make sure my doors and windows were locked as the tension and uncertainty of being safe was portrayed brilliantly . This is what this author does! I adored Henry , one of the neighbours. A riveting read .

I really enjoyed this book by Tara Lyons.
Ruby’s character is true and warm but unfortunately she doesn’t realise how utterly despicable her partner is until it’s too late.
Unfortunately for Ruby it isn’t just her partner that she needs to be fearful of but also someone else on her street is after something from her that he doesn’t deserve either.
This is a gripping and emotional read with a very bittersweet end but it’s absolutely worth reading and Tara is an author that I will be looking out for in the future.

First impressions do not always ring true. Ruby is an author, an indie author who has been published. When she and her husband Mike move into a nice quiet neighborhood. Mike is gone a lot on business, and Ruby gets lonely. She joins a book club at the insistences of her neighbor. Then things start happening. Strange noises, and things missing. What is going on? She is sure it is her weird neighbor from across the street, but she is soon to find out first impressions do not always ring true. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.

“The Perfect Stranger” by Tara Lyons is an addictive story about Ruby Turner, a writer who is dealing with dark undercurrents in her life. Is there someone stalking her or is she imagining things? Ruby barely trusts herself, so when things at home begin to go awry, she is reluctant to report her fears or even to confide in those closest to her. Readers will be absorbed until the end, wondering who in Ruby’s life is not what they seem or if Ruby is sabotaging herself. Lyons offers up a spellbinding story with lots of twists and turns.

The Perfect Stranger. Someone is watching Ruby, she feels it, things go missing in her house or get moved. Her husband Mike doesn’t believe her. Mike starts working away which leaves Ruby alone and more scared than ever to be on her own. I felt sorry for Ruby as a character and was rooting for her to get to be bottom of what had been happening. There were plenty of twists and turns, and interesting how the story wrapped up even if I was hoping for a different ending for Ruby.

Ruby and Mike life appears perfect, apart from their inability to have a baby. But then Mike's job sends him to Spain, and Ruby joins the neighbourhood book club & WhatsApp group.
Ruby becomes convinced that someone is watching her and begins to doubt her relationship with Mike.
Tara Lyons keeps the tension tight - I found myself wary of switching on lights without drawing the blinds. Just in case!

What a great read! I haven't been so gripped by a psychological thriller since THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN. The female protagonist, Ruby, displays just the right mix of aching vulnerability and madness. You can't help but identify with her, but the warning lights blink madly and you think, "Whoa. Wait just a minute. . . " Well-written, taut but not skeletal prose. Pacing - excellent. What a great film this would make.

Ruby has a nice life with Mike, not exciting but steady. Until Mike gets promotion and has to spend time in Spain every month, then strange things start to happen around their home and a new neighbour in the street makes it all too much for Ruby.
A great mystery with an unexpected twist at the end.

What a journey! An amazing read, from start to finish. Who is the killer? Who is watching Ruby? Twists and turns towards the end which are most unexpected. Very well written and I will certainly read other books by this author. I was lucky enough to receive an advance copy and leave this review willingly.

Absolutely loved this story from Tara. I’ve read all her books and they all keep you hooked from the first page and this one is no different.
I’m usually pretty good at figuring out “the bad guy” but Tara has a way of giving the reader a massive curve ball and it’s never who you think it is lol

Can’t wait for the next one - well done Tara another masterpiece xx
