She was his mate. The mother of his child. His betrayer.Idabel never planned to be a traitor. But when survival inside the walled city of Solvantis meant securing a monster’s bite, she did what she had to do and seduced the stoic gargoyle commander.
She didn’t realize she’d become a weapon used to lead an army to slaughter. Nor did she anticipate that a single night of deception would leave her with child.
Six years later, watch leader Brandt returns from fighting the goblin hordes, victorious but shattered. His body bears the scars of battle, and his mind is haunted by his lost brothers…and his lost memories.
But as he heals, the truth He has a mate he left behind. A son he’s never met. And a betrayal that cuts deeper than any war wound.
Idabel expected his rage. His vengeance. But she never expected his relentless claim. Because despite everything, the bond between them never truly broke… and now, neither of them can resist the pull.
The Gargoyle and the Maiden is a steamy, high fantasy romance with a protective gargoyle hero and the resourceful heroine who captures his heart. It’s the first full-length book in the Nightfall Guardians monster romance series about powerful gargoyle guardians who defend their mates against the world…at any cost.
She broke the bond to save him. He came back to find the truth.
Idabel thought she gave up everything when she severed the bond to protect Brandt, a decorated gargoyle soldier. Years later, he returns from war, scarred and furious, only to find the woman he once loved raising a child, Loïc, he never knew existed. His child. And Idabel is the one who let him go.
Brandt never stopped feeling her in his blood, but war shattered more than his body. His memories are broken, and the truth buried in them threatens to unravel everything they've tried to rebuild.
As they navigate life under the same roof, their bond rekindles with fierce intensity. Guilt and longing clash with trust and need, and neither is ready for how deep it still runs. But enemies haven’t forgotten Brandt, and the Tower’s secrets are darker than either of them imagined.
When danger closes in, they have to choose whether to let the past win or fight for the future they've started to build. Love isn’t a sure thing. But for two people still learning how to trust again, it might be just enough.
Idabel and Brandt evolve as they reckon with their scars. She sheds guilt to become a steady force of healing and strength, while he learns to let go of rage and hold space for hope. Their love story doesn’t erase the damage, it grows through it, honest, hard-earned, and unshakable.
A dark, steamy, high-stakes gargoyle-human, second chance monster romance with forced proximity, found family, secret child, and a protective, emotionally scarred hero. It explores trauma, healing, trust, identity, sacrifice, and redemption. It’s about rebuilding after betrayal, choosing love through fear, and finding strength in the bond that never truly broke.
Without spoiling this novel, it’s fair to say it’s one of my favorites by Sara Ivy Hill. It’s way more angsty than I prefer, but so well done I’m okay with it. Idabel is one of many keepers who maintain the great tower areas in which the gargoyles who protect their town slumber.
One fateful night she visits a defunct area of the adjacent dormitory she lives in to collect some contraband seedlings she’d cultivated to deliver them to her second job at the apothecary. A massive gargoyle confronts her as she’s harvesting them, destroying all but the few she’d managed to conceal in her apron. Brandt the gargoyle didn’t impose a fine, however, which is the very least punishment the “crime” demands. While the encounter upsets Idabel and confounds Brandt, the pair find themselves thinking of the other in the aftermath, and eventually they re-encounter one another, and intrigue gives way to passion.
As Brandt is deployed to the frontlines of the Goblin wars, a betrayal occurs and the pair are separated by far more than distance. Life has dealt Idabel scores of unspeakable horrors in addition to a great joy during Brandt’s absence. There is so much to untangle, and so many things which need to be put to rights, will they get a second chance at building a life together?
I received an advance copy from the author and bookfunnel, and I’m sharing my honest review.
I'm obsessed with this book and characters. I tried to find any moment I could to read during the day because I needed to know what was going to happen next. It's deliciously full of angst, drama, betrayal, and miscommunication. But in between these tougher scenes, Sara gives us many heart warming and sweet moments. I found myself crying on several occasions.
Brandt suffered from a lot of trauma from going to war and then betrayal when he finally makes his way home. Idabel tried her best to help him even when everyone was trying to keep them apart. It was amazing to see how they tried their best to work around their situation and heal together. And the worldbuilding was lovely. I look forward to learning more about the relationship between humans and gargoyles in future books.
The art sprinkled throughout was a fun treat! I never knew when one was going to show up.
I can already tell that this series by Sara Ivy Hill is going to live rent free in my head. If I didn’t already love most gargoyle romances, this one would have done it for me. There is much to be said about the relationship dynamic between Idabel and Brandt. Both different in different ways but alike in the ways that matter most. This book included a lot of the tropes I adore, so just to name a few: -forbidden romance -size difference -mates/mate bonds -breeding/kink exploration
If you’re a fan of paranormal/monster/etc romance, you’ll love this book. If you’re just getting into this genre (hi welcome to the best side of reading) this might be a decent place to start!!
I’m VERY much looking forward to the continuation of this series….plus I very much have my hopes of who will be staring in the coming books. Hehehehe. ✨
Thank you so much Sara for sending me this ARC. I very much love your writing style and I’m thankful.
“I love you, Idabel. My mate. My poison and my cure. My everything”
This was definitely a second chance type of novel, Idabel does something and they have to work together with Brant’s brokenness to be able to patch themselves back together and be whole.
It was spicy of course, the scenes were well written and it started early on in the novel.
I love this author and cannot wait to read more in the series!
I had a great time with this book! This was a really great monster romance with an interesting fantasy world plot. I really liked how the odds were stacked against our main couple as human and gargoyle relationships are frowned upon.
Brandt is absolutely the is a "cinnamon roll, could kill you" and I love him for it! Him and Idabel fit so well together even after all of his wartime trauma. I loved how they healed together. This book has a very sweet family aspect as well with the MCs becoming parents. I did find that we didn't get much of them before that which I would've liked and the beginning was a bit rushed. I am still definitely interested in the world and what will happen next.
I am reeling in the best ways oh my god. This was absolutely worth waiting for. So many things happen in 37 chapters and I just don't even know where to begin. Yes, I do. Read it. That's where we begin!
This story was such an adventure. It had my heart pounding in my chest and me racing to turn the page to see what was going to happen. The adventure was amazing, the emotional range was spectacular. I laughed, I cried, I was angry, I was anxious, I was scared for the characters and their futures, and then when I got to the end I let out a huge sigh of relief and settled into the anticipation for the next one. I loved everything about it. The troubled pasts, the feeling of being undeserving, the fear, the longing, the dedication and duty, the need and desire to be better and to do better, the love, the claw back, the reassurance, the accountability, the bond (all the phases of it), ahhhhhh. She loved him with the kind of devotion he'd only imagined in martyrs and madmen.
Idabel is a maiden that works as a cleaner in the Tower during the day and in an apothecary's shop at night. The Tower is inhabited by Gargoyles and the Gargoyles protect the humans during the night while they sleep. During the day the servants in the tower clean up after them and make sure they are protected while they turn to stone. Idabel's passion and dream is to become an apothecary. She came to town with no money and no possessions as everything she loved was tragically lost. She does her best to keep her head down and work hard in hopes of saving enough money to pay the guild fees to become a true apothecary apprentice. While tending to her illegal garden before heading into a shift at the apothecary's shop Idabel is spotted by a Gargoyle commander that swoops down and after accusing her of being a thief, he destroys the garden as is his duty. Burning hot with rage Idabel seeks out a way to tip the balance of power back towards humans in a city run by Gargoyles. The plan involves a bite and some blood. How bad could that be?
Brandt is a cliffborn gargoyle that has worked his entire life to climb up the ranks and make a name for himself. Going toe to toe with the best of the towerborns he faced discrimination and resistance at every turn. Through hard work and dedication Brandt works his way up to a division commander, earning the respect and praise of his superiors. With a goblin war waging on threatening the lives of humans Brandt must get his fleet prepared for battle but for some reason he can't stop running into this maddening human whose garden he regretfully destroyed. The more he sees her the more he's drawn to her and these feelings and desires leave him beyond confused knowing he is heading out to war in the very near future. They expect it'll only take 6 months, a couple years at the most. When he asks her to wait he has no idea six whole years will separate them.
When Idabel actually says "my gargoyle" for the first time in chapter 8 I literally kicked my feet in approval. Girl how many times did you say "he's not my gargoyle" just to tell yourself he was!? 😍🤭 Little rabbit has worked it's way up to one of my favorite nicknames in a book. Little rabbit, little rabbit, little traitor, little rabbit 💃💃💃 "You owe me nothing" "But I want to give you everything." 😍🥺
I was beyond elated to see the Evrard appearance. When I started this book I was hoping to get their interaction from Brandt's perspective and we did and it was wonderful. I had no idea what I was in for with Brandt's story when I was aching for it after reading Evrard's earlier this year. The full circle moment was *chef's kiss*
ARC Review O!M!G! This is without a doubt one of the best books I've ever read! I Loved every single page, there wasn't one dull sentence, this book is just perfect! I had a bit of trepidation going into it as Hill had mentioned it was her first try at a more fleshed out epic romantasy style instead of her usual alien romance, while the synopsis sounded amazing, I was worried it would be too bogged down in world building and such which I often struggle with in fantasy books, but that wasn't the case! She made everything about this tale so engrossing that I couldn't get enough. There is some world building, there is a social hierarchy and system that the humans and gargoyles live in, there is war and restrictive laws and yet it was all dealt with so well!
The story is in two parts, the beginning deals with Idabel, a poor cleaner of the gargoyle rookery who becomes embroiled in a plot to get the humans more freedom and ends up badgering a gargoyle so he'll bite her as evidence, only they fall in love and then he goes to war. This arc is exceptionally delicious with romance, I also laughed out loud several times! It was swoony and beautiful.
Part two is several years later when he returns from war and uh, things have Really changed. This section is very high angst, it's extra painful after the beauty and love in the beginning to now have them torn apart and him hating her. She also had a baby during that time. (I don't like kids in romance books but this one is handled very well, he doesn't intrude or derail from the couple and he's cute.)
Here's where I have a problem, she did something which ended up having results she had absolutely no clue about and no control over, it was some political dudes fault who tricked her and yet our gargoyle Brandt and she herself act like she did something awful on purpose! I didn't understand that, it wasn't remotely her fault and she sacrificed something to try to right it and instead of being horrified by how she was manipulated and the bravery and agony of what she did to try and fix it, Brandt sees her as a wretched traitor and despises her! I kept waiting for him to go after the politicians who abused her and it never happened. I kept waiting for him to thank her for what she did that saved his life and he never did. I kept waiting for him to break down in tears over what she endured and he never really did. It just didn't make sense yet it takes up at least a third of the book. I was also waiting for him to be all worried about how she'd been managing as a single mom and how scary her delivery must have been, but again, he was just mean. But eventually he stops being a jerk and realizes he can't stop loving her and we get back to the cuteness and spice again! I thought it was really interesting with his mental issues from the war and such too, I did feel really bad for him.
So while it wasn't happy or sweet for a good portion in the middle, the rest of the story around it was still so interesting and I couldn't wait for them to get back together, which they do in a very realistic 'walking on eggshells' kind of way. The story kept going with so much happening that I didn't know how it could possibly end, I think there could be an entire series just about this couple!
I just absolutely adored this book, even when I was stressed out or mad, it was still just sooooo good!! I loved the characters, I loved the feelings transmitted through the mate bond, I loved the gothic dusky feel, I loved the setting! And this definitely felt the closest to Disney's Gargoyles Goliath that I've found so far! I'm going to be hung over from this book for a long time!
I read the novella, Gargoyle and the Spinster and wanted more. Well cheers to book one of the Nightfall Guardian Series. I have my fingers crossed on who is in book two. Idabel is fiesty and Brandt is so freaking caring. I loved the draw to his innate Gargoyle urges. Need to groom her hair, keep her safe...perfect. Hehe the Moths are back and I was pleased they played a larger role. Naughty little gossips. The nickname was perfect. One minute he was talking about the exhilaration of hunting rabbits and a few paragraphs later 😈. Oh my, the artwork as well. There were so many full page pieces through out the novel. Gorgeous, stunning pictures painting the scene. 💜 If you want to dig a litte this was my take beyond the romance. Sara does right a good size difference scene. Beneath this high fantasy romance is a sharp mirror to our own societal structures. The layers of Gargoyle and human social hierarchy, rigid norms and deep-seated prejudice echo our real-world systems of power and discrimination. Sara did a marvelous job with the world building and didn't leave out any details. The use of mind walls really stood out, equivalent to PTSD. I don't want to give anything away, but Brandt's trauma shaped his every interaction, choice, and added a layer of vulnerability to the story. It felt raw and real, the concept of existing in a world where people see you as both a threat and hero. The book felt hauntingly familiar to what is happening in the our world and was powerful explored through themes of otherness, exclusion, and the cost of defiance. It's a story of love, but more than that, it's about survival, identity and fight to exist in a world that fears difference.
💜 “My mate. My poison and my cure. My everything.” ~~~ Idabel is one absolutely incredible woman! She’s so strong, brave and resilient. And, despite everything she’s lost and everything she has to face, she remains so kind, compassionate, loving and selfless. Idabel is a truly remarkable human being and I adored everything about her!
Brandt is the Commander of the Sixth Watch. He’s one huge, strong, growly, scarred and fearsome male. But Brandt is also incredibly caring, thoughtful and fiercely protects those he holds dear. And I completely fell for his gentle and patient side, too. Brandt is one amazing gargoyle and I loved every single thing about him!
I absolutely loved everything that happened between Idabel and Brandt! Idabel works in the gargoyles’ Tower where a chance encounter and a passionate night lead to a mate bond. But Brandt needs to go to war and he would leave more than a mate behind. He would also leave his unborn son. Six years later, when the gargoyle commander is back, he’s not only broken but nothing could've prepared him for the betrayal of his own mate.
I absolutely adored Idabel and Brandt together! Their relationship put me through a rollercoaster of emotions but I don’t regret even a second of it. There was so much hurt, pain, loss and betrayal. But there was also hope, a chance to mend the broken, to heal and to love. And both Idabel and Brandt went through so much but they were truly meant and perfect for each other. And their hard-fought happily-ever-after (together with their truly wonderful little boy) was more than deserved.
Overall, The Gargoyle and the Maiden is a remarkable start of the series. It’s filled with so much emotion, twists, betrayals, drama, danger, passion, love and incredible characters.
I couldn’t put it down and absolutely loved every single page of it!
I was definitely not expecting this to be as heavy as it was, so be fair warned that’s there’s plenty of angst and heavy themes in this book. In the beginning you have this sweet and tender budding relationship between Idabel and Brandt; he’s protective of her without knowing why, he can’t seem to stay away from him and the two are scrambling for any time they have together. Then flash forward to during and after the war, Brandt is an entirely different person. He’s scarred from the war, with amnesia and PTSD brought on by the trauma he’s been through. He’s angry and confused, looking for answers and then retribution for the actions he feels have wronged him. I’m not going to lie, some of those scenes where he’s so angry and basically punishing Idabel were hard for me to get through.
He really wants her to suffer with him and says some really terrible stuff to her. I can see where both sides are coming from but it was a lot for me personally. But the punishment soon turned spicier and almost playful. Her started to learn to forgive her and he see parts of the old Brandt come back as well. Being a father and a mate again helped him heal, while still showing the struggles of recovering and healing from war and trauma. There were still moments where he was not himself and seeing Idabel and their son help him heal was really sweet. Overall, some parts of it I really loved, I think their relationship was complicated and deep and the power dynamics in the spice were very enjoyable!
War refugee and aspiring apothecary Idabel is determined to build a new life in a city protected by gargoyles—including the handsome Brandt, who has fought hard to rise through the ranks of the military watch. When Idabel is deceived by someone in power, she ends up mating with Brandt just before his unit is sent to battle the goblin hordes, but she never imagined the mating bite would be used against her gargoyle and his watch comrades. Six long years of betrayal, tragedy, and war later, Brandt returns home in pieces. Can he and Idabel salvage what’s been shattered and create something beautiful out of the ashes?
Minor spoilers ahead: This was a unique read, both in the span of time it covers and the raw, war-torn world it builds. I’ll admit, it was tough to read the part where Idabel is manipulated by a traitor and then blamed for the fallout. Watching her shoulder guilt for something she couldn’t have foreseen was painful—but it also shows how deeply I was pulled into the story. I cared about her, and about Brandt, and I desperately wanted them to find their way through grief and trauma. The journey wasn’t simple, which made the ending all the more satisfying. Their happy ending was so well-earned and so wholesome to read.
I liked the worldbuilding—especially the layered relationship between humans and their gargoyle protectors. Idabel’s growth from apothecary apprentice to mate to mother was beautiful to follow, and Brandt’s choice to embrace healing and growth rather than bitterness was both powerful and emotional. Their bond felt earned, and watching them rebuild was deeply rewarding. The spice definitely added balance to the darker themes, as did the heartwarming moments of friendship, motherhood, and family life. Overall, this story surprised me, in a positive way. I’m excited to read more set in this world—and of course, I can’t ever get enough gargoyles.
We meet Idabel and Brandt in this lovely little story. Brandt commander in the war against goblins and Idabel a lowly maid that cleans the towers the gargoyles live in. When she gets tricked into a scheme to overtake the gargoyles she goes in blindly not aware of whats really behind the guys plans to hurt the gargoyles. She ends up mated to Brandt as he leaves for the war with the promise return. He leaves behind more than a mate though he left a mate and child. Gone for six long years he returns in a daze with wall sickness he and only one other of his team making it back. Idabel has severed the mating bond thinking it the best way for her and him. He isn't the happy when all finally comes out. Finding he has a son that everybody knows about except him. As punishment he forces her to endure the mating bit again. You follow as war and scheming pull them apart and push them together again. Finding they have punished themselves far more than a war and distance ever could. You can't help but to fall in love with all the characters Sara Ivy Hill has created. I found myself teary eyed one moment angry the next and then smiling and giggling like a little girl the very next Its a story of love and forgiveness. The spice 3 Chilis and the book itself easily 5 stars.
Omg, this book was so freaking good! It was angsty, and moody, and I cried more than once. And all of that angst was worth if for an HEA that made my heart feel so full.
Idabel is a works in the gargoyle's tower cleaning and scraping out a living after losing everything. A chance encounter with Brandt, leads to an impulsive bond. But Brandt is off to fight in a war and he may never return. Will their connection survive the separation? And what if the Brandt that leaves isn't the Brandt that returns?
This book touched on so many issues of hurt, betrayal, healing, comfort, and love. I'm in awe that the author packed so much story into this book. I went through all the emotions while reading and cried more than once. I couldn't see how they could overcome their past when so much had happened. But all that tension just made the HEA that much sweeter. Idabel and Brandt were such a great couple and I loved their story so much! And all the tension and angst led to some really steamy and spicy scenes between them.
If you love angst, second chances, and a love bond that endures, this is the book for you. This was such a wonderful book and I can't wait to keep reading the series!
Wow! 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐨𝐲𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧 completely took me by surprise in the best way possible. I was soaking up every ounce of tension as Idabel and Brandt’s paths kept crossing, each meeting building this irresistible draw and undeniable attraction. And the𝐧 𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗠, everything went utterly sideways, unraveling in the most heartbreaking way. Ugh. It hurt.
What followed was this raw, emotional journey through guilt, shame, betrayal, anger, and devastating loss. Their attempt to “even the score” somehow turned into the thing that allowed them to heal, forgive, and rebuild a love that never really died. I absolutely 𝙙𝙚𝙫𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙙 this book. I was so swept up in their pain, their hope, and ultimately their beautiful, hard-won future.
A fantastic story full of emotional depth, redemption, and the kind of healing that sticks with you long after you finish the last page.
Special thanks to the author for the gifted copy 🫶🏼
When I read the prequel, I loved the concept and the world (Sara is wonderful at that, and she has given us other amazing ones). So I was really looking forward to this book. First of all, the length; it is a longer, more solid story with a more complex and layered plot, full of twists and complications that I really enjoyed.
As always, the 🌶️🌶️🌶️ scenes are perfect, and the narrative makes it easy to visualize everything in detail. And of course, the mate bond makes everything twice as incredible.
Maybe I didn’t enjoy as much not getting a stronger climax with Idabel’s blood plot. I wanted more details from the dramatic part or about how the other gargoyles treated her. Still, I understand that diving deeper into that would have made the story much longer, even though I’m one of those readers who wishes these books would never end. Or maybe I just love the drama like a moth to a flame.
I’m eagerly waiting for the next two books, and I hope we get to see the characters we already know, and find out whether it was a boy or a girl 🥰.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Who else is still reeling from this book? 🙌🏾 Raise your hands!! Cause I AM! GIMME A GARGOYLE LIKE BRANDT STAT.
Where do I begin with this? 😭 Sara weaved magic with this story, and I couldn't put the book down. I read whenever I could, stayed up late, took my time with every chapter. The rollercoaster of emotions that you go through with this book is worth the ride. Full to the max with angst, miscommunication, betrayal, romance, protective gargoyles.
There were several scenes I just had to stop and swoon over. Everything Brandt goes through makes your heart ache, and you long to support Idabel as she navigates a world of changes. Their worlds couldn't be anymore different, but that doesn't stop them from being together. You will laugh, cry, and probably be just as giddy as I was through these chapters. This is a Gargoyle Romance that will live rent free in my head for a very long time.
Brandt is a commander in the gargoyle military. Soon to muster with his company to fight the hordes of goblins that press in on the civilizations he's sworn to protect. He has no time for Idabel, a refugee from the goblin-ravaged south. Yet, after they're drawn together by chance, neither can get the other out of their heads. Idabel's decisions result in her bond with Brandt being turned into a weapon against him. After six years, the gargoyle commander who was assumed dead returns to his home, the woman who betrayed him, and a son he does not know.
I really enjoyed this book. I kept looking for more details, and I think I'd like more information on how the sociopolitical influences of the area work together to create the background conflict. I'm excited to read the next in the series!
This is an entertaining PNR, with detailed world building and intriguing characters who are well developed. Brandt and Idabel are really hot together and they obviously fit each other well. I had trouble with the beginning of the book because of Idabel's deceit and her manipulation of Brandt, but she works really hard to redeem herself, so I figured if Brandt could forgive her so could I. I really felt for Brandt, with everything that he went through. Plus he is an awesome mate and father, and his son is just precious. I enjoyed the action, the political intrigue, as well as the romantic and spicy moments. I really liked the artwork in the book as well. And the moths carrying gossip everywhere, that is inspired! I highly recommend this newest book by Sara Ivy Hill. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This was such a great and angsty series opener! With fab world building, characters you can't help but fall for - and root hard for! - betrayal, drama, danger, PTSD, action, healing and what ends up being a second chance romance, I was hooked, beginning to end. Idabel and Brandt both have horrors in their pasts and have a ton of healing to go through. I love how Brandt, despite the apparent betrayal by Idabel, focuses on loving her. Caring for her and their son. She grew so much throughout the story and I love that they manage to mend their broken bits and have the happy ending they so deserves - and, frankly, earned. I can't say enough about how well written this story is and that I definitely am looking forward to the next book :D
The Gargoyle and the Maiden is the first book in the Nightfall Guardians series. It follows Idabel and Brandt. The way I am obsessed with these two is unreal. I fell in love with them instantly and honestly couldn’t put this book down.
Idabel is a human who works as a cleaner for the guardians tower. After an encounter with Brandt her life has changed forever. They mated before he left for war and she found out a short time after that she was pregnant. She never got to tell him about their son. I love that she is such a sweet mother and does not sugar coat things with her son. Once Brandt came home, she wanted to help any way that she could even if it was from afar. She is extremely hardworking, kind, fierce, stubborn, sweet, caring and ambitious.
Brandt is a gargoyle and commander of the sixth watch. He is an absolute cinnamon roll but would also protect her with his life. Which is why he suggests they become a mated pair. After he came home from the goblin war he was not the same gargoyle who left. He has scars both physically and mentally. My heart broke for him once he found out he had a son he never knew existed. Though he hated her at first for her betrayal, his love for Idabel never stopped. He is sweet, caring, gentle, grumpy but kind, thoughtful and protective.
These two were magnetic together and somehow always crossed paths. I love them together as at first they were playful and easy together. They fell in love quickly but they really went through some tough times. I felt so greatly for these characters that at times I couldn’t stop crying especially once Brandt met his son. Idabel and Brandt were always meant to be together and fought hard to get their happily ever after. Their journey was not easy at all but they found a way to mend all the broken pieces.
I truly loved their story and am looking forward to seeing what comes next.
You will enjoy this book if you like the following: - Monster (Gargoyle & human) - Forbidden relationship - Betrayal - Biting and knotting - Scared hero - Size difference
Thank you so much, Sara Ivy Hill for the gifted copy!
Thank you to the author for the advanced copy of this book! I am leaving an honest review.
First of all, I adore Sara Ivy Hill! If you enjoy monster romance, she's a must-read. And some of her books include drawings... enough said ;)
Secondly, I actually enjoyed this book better than the prequel novella at the start. I thought the main characters were well developed, and I appreciated her style of world building--the rumor moths, yes!
Unfortunately, for me, the groveling the gargoyle believed his mate owed him, and her complete agreement, despite her betrayal being unintentional, frustrated me. And even as that was repaired, the novel never quite bounced back for me.
Sara Ivy Hill has this magic touch when it comes to heartbreak and healing, and wingspan?
Book 1 is everything I hoped it would be—aching, tender, steamy, and surprisingly gentle in the places you need it most. Brandt and Idabel’s story isn’t easy—it’s full of betrayal, battle scars, and things left unsaid—but the journey back to each other is deeply satisfying.
Brandt is the kind of hero who doesn’t just protect—he endures. He bears pain like armor. Idabel, meanwhile, is beautifully complex. She’s resourceful and raw.
This story doesn’t rush the forgiveness. It earns it. The push and pull, the tension, the soft reclaiming of trust—it all unfolds like a balm.
Idabel is a meek FMC who is trying her best to do what she loves.
Brandt is trying to climb his way up the gargoyle ladder, and in doing so potentially takes life slightly to seriously.
The Goblin war is ramping up from where we left The Gargoyle and the Spinster.
Idabel gets wrapped up into doing some silly things to try and incriminate the gargoyles, by threat or trickery.
I did like the addition of character art in the book.
Key points in no particular order: - Gargoyle - war - longing to be more - Turmoil - Lies and deceit - pregnancy & raising a child - PTSD - Trauma healing - Found Family - forgiveness - Finding your place
Sara Ivy Hill's The Gargoyle & the Maiden is the story of humans female Idabel who dreams of being an apothecary one day, tending an illegal herb garden while working as a maid for the Gargoyles in the Tower. Enter Brandt who destroys her garden but can't forget the tiny woman. Before he leaves to fight jn the goblin wars, he and Idabel become a mated pair, but she discovers she's pregnant and evil doers persuade her to give up some of her blood which they then use to decimate Brandt's contingent. To save him, she disconnects their bond. Six years later, Brandt and one other soldier return, broken physically and mentally. Will they be able to survive the broken bond and his injuries?
I am so excited to read this series, and I think it is firmly pushing Gargoyles into the fave book boyfriend category for me.
I did NOT expect this book to make me cry so much if I am honest, I love Idabel and Brandt's releationship so much but it broke my heart reading about the issues they face and went through. Brandt is going through such a tough time and Idabel feels like she needs forgiveness for something that she couldn't really control.
The Goblin War started getting intense at the beginning but seeing how it panned out and how it affected everyone in the world was really well done and I kinda need to know more about what happened now.
The character art included in the book was also a lovely treat as well!
A fantastic story of betrayal, second chances, and an enduring mate bond.
The story of Brandt, the shattered gargoyle commander, and Idabel, the resourceful FMC who was forced into an act of devastating betrayal, is instantly captivating.
Brandt is a swoonworthy MMC—stoic, dangerous, and completely devoted once he commits. Idabel is a strong and feisty FMC. Their journey of healing and forgiveness is both agonizing and incredibly satisfying.
If you love monster romance with a strong dose of feeling, emotion, angst, and a fiercely passionate protector, this is for you!
An incredible book that I could not put down and gave up sleep to be able to continue reading. I finished it across two days. A beautiful and tragic story about how love once planted is hard to uproot no matter how thorny the ground it is in becomes. It touches on dark topics and trauma but nothing I personally found too dark to handle, it also touches upon station divides and the rules of society keeping our couple apart which I always eat up. A book I would recommend to any monster lovers, especially those who love your monsters a little wounded.
I must start this review with a disclaimer - this book is ANGSTY. Tbh it is angstier than I tend to prefer so this isn't my favorite Sara Ivy Hill book, but still 5 stars because it was a good story even if not to my personal taste.
Idabel and Brandt have a twisty and heart wrenching path to romance, but when they finally get there the payoff is sweet. I was suffering while they worked through their issues, but it was worth it in the end for a stronger relationship between them. And the spice, size difference, and mated pair tropes kept me persevering through the angst.
Thank you Sara for allowing me to read an ARC of your lovely book!
I really enjoyed this monster romance. It kept me guessing what would happen and took the story in a different direction than I originally guessed. I was impressed by the realistic second half of the MCs' love story; they really had to earn their happy ending. Through all the dangers, trials, and both external and internal forces trying to keep them apart, they still managed to overcome them all because their love was so strong.
