The Soul Shield

Rate this book
There's something wicked brewing within the five Kingdoms of Aksel, but Sayah, a half-elven Marked One, is more concerned about the darkness stirring inside her. She must learn to conquer her fear of her siphoning powers as she needs to save her sister from the treacherous Breeders of Thereon. Not only must she master her powers, but Sayah will also be burdened with the task of altering the future before it occurs... before she makes a realm-shattering choice.

Ornella is ensnared in the grasp of Bakunax, the most vile and corrupt of all Breeders. His plans regarding her and the kingdoms are unclear, yet he has claimed that the twins will mark the beginning of the end of the world as they know it. The shell of the dragon is not the only threat hiding in the shadows of Mount Auberon's caverns, and she must remain alert if she's to find a way out of her prison before Sayah storms into their trap.

The two sisters will test the strength of their bond... can they synchronize their wavelengths and communicate vital information to one another before it's too late?

If you are the type of reader who enjoys a mixture of cozy feelings and nature-influenced magic alongside a dash of despair, then I can guarantee you are in for a real treat.

Tropes: YA fantasy

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

First of all, special thank you to Victoria for allowing me to continue to be an ARC reader for this series. 🩷

I said this about the first book but Tori’s writing is beautiful! I love the emotions you feel between the characters, whether it’s their love for one another or even their hatred. This time she gave us multiple POV and I was here for it! It really took this book to another level. As usual delicious food is always mentioned and now I want some warm chocolate chip cookies 🤤. A few character shout outs that were my favorite… of course our MMC and FMC, their banter had me laughing. Sayah snapping back at Nox (my girl! 😏). Brom, such a gentle giant, I love him so much. But Silas and Tabitha’s chemistry was my favorite!😍Highly recommend.

First of all, my first ever ARC read!! I’m so thankful I was given this opportunity 🫶🏼
Wow—Victoria has done it again!! This book was the perfect continuation of the first book. I loved the extra pov’s (looking at you Nox) I’m usually not a huge fan of adding more pov’s in sequels but this was done SO. WELL. I never felt lost or confused with the switching and it was easy to keep up with. Victoria weaves in poetry with her writing which fits the story and the world so well, I’m forever obsessed.
The only warning I’ll give—book two ends on a cliffhanger!! And book three is not out yet 🥲 BUT TRUST ME IT’S SO WORTH IT!! The characters, worldbuilding, storyline, all 10/10. My thoughts are still very muddled right now but seriously it is so stinking good.

I was honored to be chosen as an ARC reader for The Soul Shield, it completely exceeded my expectations and I had a great time reading this! Victoria Sorenson has outdone herself with this second installment in the Tendrils of Light series. Everything you could want in a fantasy novel is here—an intricate magic system, beautifully developed characters, and a storyline that keeps you hooked from beginning to end.
Part 1 takes its time, setting the stage and deepening our understanding of the characters and their journey. But once Part 2 begins, chaos unfolds in the best way possible—the twists, the turns, and that ending! The cliffhanger left me speechless. That final POV? Absolutely wild. I don’t know how I’m supposed to wait for book three!
Victoria’s writing has a special kind of magic. Her ability to entwine words around your mind makes you truly feel and think about what you’re reading. The multiple POVs add such richness, allowing readers to get inside each character’s head and see the world from new angles. The imagery is vivid, the emotion is raw, and the pacing builds to a spectacular crescendo.
If you love complex world-building, well-crafted magic systems, and writing that pulls you in completely, you need to read The Soul Shield. Just make sure to start with The Sacred Vine first—then prepare to be utterly captivated.

AHHHHH, I AM DEVASTATED!!! in the best way possible but DEVASTATED 😭😭😭

PLEASE, WHAT IS THE ENDING IM CRYING.

okay. I need to stop yelling.

Tori is a master of words. The Soul Shield reads like poetry. It flows with stunning details, incredible shifts, beautifully placed twists and turns, and some gut-wrenching moments.

I was transported into this story and literally finished it in two days. IT'S BEEN SO LONG SINCE I'VE BINGE READ A BOOK. Reading slump WHO? I don't know her ✋🏼 Well, now I do because HOW IS IT OVER ALREADY 😭 I will be biting my nails until the next book (rip my nails)

The different POVs were all so incredible, and I loved getting in the different head spaces. Nox's POV was so sweet, and HIM CALLING SAYAH MY JEWEL uugggh I am never recovering. The romance is subtle and sweet (they're all in danger here! their priorities are so right 👏🏼), and I love those two.

Ornella broke my heart. I am just so sad for her, and I don't want to spoil things, but she has been through so much, and her character arc is so tragically beautiful.

I adore this series, and this was such an incredible follow-up to book one. 100 🌟 out of 5. I can't wait until the next one, and this one isn't even fully released yet 😭🥹

“She was art itself, and I was mystified that the Creator let me linger in her presence”. 🥹😭🌿✨

Just like The Sacred Vine, The Soul Shield immediately captivated me. The writing is so immersive that the real world fades away, and you feel transported to the intricate world of Aksel.

This novel centres around Sayah’s arduous journey to rescue Ornella and Tabitha. Yet, it also highlights the internal battle she undergoes as struggles to accept the gifts that The Creator blessed her with. It’s written in such a poignant way that you can’t help but feel every hardship, and every spark of determination from each of the characters.

The unique storyline and Victoria’s poetic writing grabs you from the very first page, and by the time that unexpected POV twist hits at the end, you’re left reflecting, whilst still craving more. It’s the best kind of feeling.

This is a lovely addition to the Tendrils of Light Series. Be sure to go read The Sacred Vine first!

The sisters' bond is being tested as Sayah tries to control her energy-siphoning power and Ornella endures captivity under a terrible foe.

"Bless the vine, all I wanted was to read books indoors and drink hot tea in the mornings."

Victoria's writing is quite poetic and flows so beautifully. I loved seeing Sayah start to really come into her own in this book. I also enjoyed having the additional POVs to provide more depth and perspective. The first half+ of the book felt a bit like a long setup, but the payoff is worth it, with quite a few big reveals that I did not see coming. I was left with so many questions and look forward to seeing where things go in the next installment!

💕: kisses
⚠️: being held captive, violence/fighting

Victoria, a master of poetry, writing, and keeping me sucked into this book!

The Soul Shield is everything a sequel should be: deeper, more complex, and absolutely devastating in the best possible way! If you loved The Sacred Vine, prepare to be captivated all over again as Victoria M. Sorenson delivers a truly breathtaking second installment that solidifies the Tendrils of Light as a must-read fantasy series! 😭

The writing itself is sheer poetry; I was totally sucked into it. The world of Aksel is painted with such detail and care that the pages melt away, and you feel truly transported. This book dives headfirst into Sayah's intense internal battle to master her siphoning powers while she simultaneously races to save her sister, Ornella. The pressure is immense—you feel every ounce of their struggle, and it’s honestly gut-wrenching!

The introduction of multiple POVs was a brilliant choice—getting inside the minds of characters like Nox and witnessing the heartbreaking depth of Ornella’s journey added incredible dimension. I lived for the character dynamics, especially the banter and the subtle, sweet romance. Watching the sisterly bond between Sayah and Ornella get tested against such high stakes makes for truly emotional reading; I was on the edge of my seat the whole time!

(Minor Spoilers Ahead!)

For those who love the slow-burn, closed-door romance, this book DELIVERS! Seeing Sayah and Nox's relationship progress was a huge highlight, especially when the multiple POVs let us get into Nox's head. His internal dedication to Sayah is just swoon-worthy—the fact that he calls her his "Jewel" has me completely obsessed. Plus, the quiet chemistry between Silas and Tabitha adds another fun layer of romance to watch develop! I need more of them, seriously!

Between the unique, nature-influenced magic, the fantastic worldbuilding featuring Elves, Werewolves, and Dragons, and a plot twist I genuinely did not see coming, this book is non-stop action and heart. That cliffhanger ending left my jaw on the floor! I am already desperate for the next book, like, NOW. The Soul Shield is an essential addition to any fantasy lover's shelf. Run, don't walk! 🏃‍♀️

First, I would like to thank Victoria for trusting me to be one of her ARC readers again. It is such a special thing to be trusted with any author’s book baby and it is even better because Tori is such an amazing writer and kind soul. ❤️

The first thing I want to touch on is how beautiful the writing is in this book! Taking sentences and turning them into true poetry is both something that is rare to find in novels and something that Victoria does consistently in all of her writing. The words are more than a story but akin to a song or a lovely caress for your soul.

The plot of this second novel was just as engaging as the first. There was a pretty big reveal and cliff hanger at the end that I was not expecting. I often find myself a little disappointed because some series will fall into a pattern of predictability but that was not the case with The Soul Shield. I was shocked at the end to say the least. I was left with so many questions at the end but in the best way! My one complaint about this second installation was the pacing. I felt as though the story was flying to the next plot point while I was still craving more details about the previous one. I felt this acutely during the rescue mission. It felt like the whole beginning had been building to that moment, yet when I got there it was over very quickly. However, pacing often has the ability to make or break a book and this in no way detracted from the overall enjoyment of the novel.

Another thing I really enjoyed about this sequel was the addition of multiple perspectives. The addition was made in a way that felt natural and it gave great insight to the minds of the other characters. I particularly enjoyed reading Nox’s POV.

Overall, The Soul Shield was a fabulous sequel and I’m already eagerly awaiting book three!

The Soul Shield is Book 2 in the Tendrils of Light series. These books do need to be read in order and each one ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. There is romance, but it’s a closed door/slow burn type. This series focuses on the magic system and lots of action/drama as we have a fight for good vs evil.

In The Soul Shield we have a sister trying to come to terms with her powers and then to save her sister and her beloved’s sister who have been taken by evil forces. Secrets are revealed along the way and sisterly bonds are tested.

I enjoyed this just as much as book 1, although the FMC, Sayah, was a bit much with her constant self-doubt and ineptitude at times during this book, but I feel like her character is still developing and she was beginning to have more resolve towards the end of book 2. I’m left wanting book 3 immediately, but I will wait patiently for the author to create it and I know it’ll be awesome! - Rating: 4.5 stars

What to expect 👇

- Unique Magic System 🪄
- Dragons 🐉
- Werewolves 🐺
- Elves, Ogres and More!
- Evil vs Good/light vs dark
- Sibling Bonds
- Being viewed as ‘property’ 😡
- Multiple POV
- Hidden truths revealed
- A slow burn romance, warmth but no spice
- An ending that leaves you wanting book 3 NOW!

Some Quotes 👇

“Mold me into a being that can master her powers and protect those she cares for.”

“Bless the vine, all I wanted was to read books indoors and drink hot tea in the mornings. I didn’t want to grow my muscles and learn how to overtake an opponent in a match.”

“I couldn’t force anyone to accept me; it was imperative to the survival of my autonomy that I defend myself and those who I hold close to my heart.”

✨ Victoria does it again! ✨
The 𝑇𝑒𝑛𝑑𝑟𝑖𝑙𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝐿𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 series just keeps getting better, and book two completely swept me away. Also… can we take a second to admire these covers? Probably some of my all-time favorites—absolutely stunning.

This sequel dives deep into Sayah’s journey—her healing, her struggle to accept the gifts the Creator gave her, and her determination to save Ornella and Tabitha. A daring rescue, dangerous truths revealed beyond the veil, and magic woven through every page made this a one-sitting read for me. I literally could not put it down.

What makes this series shine is how refreshingly unique the storyline feels. Twin sisters, rare Marked Ones, bloom from the Vine of Life itself—one gifted to give energy, the other to take it away. It’s fantasy with a rare mix of cozy comfort, elemental magic, mystery, danger, and heart.

The characters continue to steal the show for me:
🌿 Sayah’s growth from self-doubt to power is inspiring.
❤️ Sayah and Nox’s romance is slow-burn swoony perfection.
💪 Tabitha’s resilience and Silas’s unwavering love stood out beautifully.
⚡ And Lady Gwyneth’s POV at the end? Haunting, emotional, and absolutely unforgettable.

The opening scene of Sayah’s vengeance grabbed me instantly, and that ending left me desperate for book three. Victoria’s world-building, character arcs, and emotional beats all come together in a way that feels magical yet intimate.

If you’re a fantasy reader who loves a blend of adventure, magic, danger, and just the right amount of coziness, this series deserves a spot on your shelf.

I was honored to be an ARC reader for The Soul Shield.

The ending was worse than the first book. Not in an actual bad way but the cliff hanger is on another level! You are telling me with that ending? THAT POV? I am going to have to wait a bit for the next book to get answers?! I don’t know if i’m going to survive this wait.

Part 1 is definitely slower as it opens up the journey the characters are starting and what that’s going to entail. It’s the build up. Part 2 is when things get interesting! The last couple chapters though is when chaos truly ensues. The amount of questions I have?! Too many to count.

This series is so good! Just like the first, Victoria knows how to write such incredible imagery. You can truly envision yourself within this world. She wrote the second book in a different style than the first by introducing multiple POV’s. I LOVED the multiple POV’s. Getting inside each characters head is always so interesting and I think adds more layers to the story.

Victoria's writing is always lovely. She really has a way with her words. She also showcased her poetic ability by including a few poems throughout the book.

Sayah's journey of self acceptance was in some ways relatable. She always felt like an outsider and just wanted to belong never realizing how truly amazing she is just by being herself.

The banter between Nox and Sayah made me giggle. Honestly, Victoria did such a wonderful job show casing each of the characters personalities, I either loved them, hated them, or kinda understood why the were the way they were. Found family is one of my all time favorite tropes and this book truly shines a light on found family.

I love muli POV's and I understand how difficult it can be at times to truly grasp each characters perspective to the full extent. Victoria did it effortlessly. Each POV adds more depth to the story and without it, it just wouldn't hit the same.

Thank you so much Victoria for having me on the street team!

The Sacred Vine was one of my favorite reads last year. I love how Victoria writes fantasy and she really put a lot of research and thought into not only the world building but the magic system as well. The magic system is influenced by Portuguese which I have never seen in a book before and I thought it’s very refreshing. This story had me hooked from page one just like book one. I loved the new POVs and new characters. You also find out a lot of secrets and some big bombshells. The emotions in this book were tangible and I loved the beautiful imagery. Victoria really has a good thing going with this series. I also love that it’s appropriate to read for younger readers too because there isn’t any spice or harsh language. I highly recommend these books!!

Literally everything you could ask for in a magic system!
I was so incredibly lucky to be chosen as an ARC reader for Victoria’s second book in the Tendril’s of Light Series! The twists and turns and characters… Ugh it’ll make you fall in love with reading all over again. She has a way of entwining her words around your brain and actually making you think about what you’re reading. A lot of books lack the complexity these days but Victoria’s writing style does a great job of pulling you in and making you think! And oh my god the ending! I can’t even! I need book 3 like yesterday! I can’t recommend these books highly enough! If you love magical creatures, complex magic systems, and of course well written books… Check out The Soul Shield! (But maybe read The Sacred Vine first!)

I absolutely adored The Soul Shield, even a little more than The Sacred Vine. It was delightful to see these characters in an already established yet expanding world. So much new lore was introduced but not in a way that was overwhelming. I thoroughly enjoyed all the different POV's we were presented with in this book, Nox's was definitely a treat!
Ornella and Sayah also both underwent compelling character arcs in this book that left me on the edge of my seat for the upcoming third installment. Without spoilers, Sayah's emotional journey in particular resonated with me.
Lastly, if you thought the twist and cliffhanger in The Sacred Vine was mind-boggling, you simply must read The Soul Shield. This series just keeps getting better!

I really want to sit here and write out a thoughtful, intelligent review for people to read.... but at the moment, my mind is moving a million miles per hour theorizing about everything that is going to happen next.. (yes I did just finish this 2 minutes ago).

so while I collect my thoughts here's what I'll say.

I'm obsessed with the tendrils of light series.. I'm obsessed with Tori, in general, but also with her world building, magic system, and prose.

these characters are captivating, and loveable, and hateable, and complex, and sweet, and brave, and naive, and I think there's a character for everyone in this series.

Book 2 did not disappoint... I am so excited to see where this series ends!!!!

I really enjoyed this book! It is a dashing adventure with elves, shadow monsters, and more. I read the first book and this one in the span of about a week. The romance is thrilling and the drama is real. I recommend this series to anyone in the mood to jump into a series they can’t get back out of.

I had the honor of getting to arc read both books 🙏 . Thank you Tori!! They look SO good together.

This is one of my favorite YA fantasy series. The writing is lush and poetic. The world is so creative and beautifully described. That plot twist and ending?! 🤯🫠

The first book, The Sacred Vine, ended on quite the cliffhanger too and I was so ready to jump back into this world. The Soul Shield is an awesome continuation of the story. I’m super invested in the characters and relationships. My only complaint is book 3 isn’t out yet. But it’ll be worth the wait!

Fav tropes:

🐺Shifters

Fav quotes:

“But the small, mundane moments. You can change those. And I would like to believe that if someone were to make enough little changes, the imminent events could be prevented or swayed as well.”
