I love starting reviews with my expectations. I expected a youth novel, something fun for kids to read.

What I found…

Engaging, memorable characters,

Colorful, vibrant imagery,

A grasping story that kept me from doing adult things. I was transported to the locations and could hear the characters in my head.

I couldn't wait to keep reading. I found that Google autoreader was obnoxious and doesn't do this story justice. I think the author needs to read it for the audio book.

I've known this author for 30 years and I didn't expect such a powerhouse book. He's a brilliant guy, I just didn't realize he was such an incredible, descriptive, thrilling writer. Great job Chris!!

Additionally, this series wraps a kid with a disability into this fascinating super hero. I can't wait until November when the next book is released. Oh my goodness, I'm sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to hear what happens next to our trio.

I did receive this book as an ARC at no charge. I will be buying all 3 books!!!

A new school year is on the horizon for Josh Jacobs, Jr., aka Kid Comet, and his best friends Xandra and Mikey. More confident with his supernatural abilities since the events of last year, Josh works hard to keep the peace and protect his secret identity. When Xandra’s college-age sister Abi, an intern at the mysterious Invictus Labs, gets into trouble, Xandra finds that she, too, has powers. To make matters worse, she’s not the only one with new abilities, as beefed-up villains begin appearing with alarming regularity. With Abi missing and Xandra’s superpowered emotions spiraling out of control, it’s all Josh can do to keep everyone’s heads above water. But with Mikey feeling left out and the mystery growing ever more dangerous, can Josh hope to keep his friends safe from the deadly villain behind the scenes?
Kid Comet and the Seventh Grade Secret by Christopher Bodmann is the second installment in the Kid Comet series. This novel delves even deeper into the world of superheroes, as Josh struggles to keep his secret identity intact while battling supervillains who seem to know more than they should. Xandra comes into her own as the heroine Pink Pulsar, and her fight to protect those she loves while keeping the power/responsibility paradigm in mind is realistic and easy to identify with. Meanwhile, Josh wonders if he’s beginning to like Xandra as more than just a friend, while Mikey, the researcher of team, finds himself consistently left out of the loop.
The fight scenes are epic, and I stayed highly engaged for the entire volume. I loved the numerous anime and comicbook references scattered throughout the book, each one bringing a smile to my face as Josh and his friends work to untangle the mystery of Invictus Labs. The only real complaint I have is that I wish the kids were just a little bit older. Since this volume has even higher stakes than the last, with drug manufacturers and fights involving thugs with actual firearms, my overprotective big-sister energy was off the charts. I mean, these kids are literally twelve, heading out to Chicago with no adult backup to fight superpowered thugs that have no problem shooting at minors. Beyond that, this book is a smash-hit in every possible way, with plenty of diversity, high-stakes action, and incredible battle locations in the Chicago area.
Earning five out of five stars for a yet another truly epic entry into the world of superheroes, this tale of going beyond to save the day is full of heart. Focusing more on the motivation behind the actions rather than relying on fight scenes alone, deep character interactions and moral questions continue to drive the plot forward. This book contains drug references, mild language, violence, kidnapping, and blood, and is recommended by this big sister for kids ages 13 and up. A book that feels like an award-winning superhero film on the silver screen, Kid Comet’s latest adventure is a story Clark Kent would be proud to feature on the front page of The Daily Planet.
I received a free review copy of this book, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I'm a middle-aged guy, meaning I'm probably well outside the intended audience, yet I thoroughly enjoyed KID COMET AND THE SEVENTH GRADE SECRET. The novel begins with a bang -- Josh must save the people of Rockvale from a mysterious lizardman -- and doesn't let up until the end. Like any good sequel, Seventh Grade Secret expands the Kid Comet universe, introducing a shadowy organization called Invictus, more superpowered characters, and deeper lore behind those abilities. At the same time, it never loses sight of what made the first outing so much fun.

What I admire about Bodmann's work in middle-grade lit is that he doesn't talk down to the reader, nor does he sugarcoat the more grown-up themes. Even as fireballs and eye beams are zipping by, we never lose sight of the fact that this is a story first and foremost about loyalty and friendship, something any reader can relate to. These themes are particularly important for young readers, who are just learning how to navigate them WITHOUT the benefit of superpowers... though as SEVENTH GRADE SECRET teaches us, sometimes those powers can get in between a great friendship. And that's all I'll say on the matter.

What I loved most wasn’t just the epic battles, but how the secrets and choices weighed on the team. It’s about friendship, trust, and how far you’ll go to protect the people you care about. A superhero story with real heart.
