He was a fool to believe he could live without her. Once she’s gone, he finds out that she’s everything he needs.
A tattooed, muscle-bound construction boss, Gage Walker specializes in restoring New Orleans’ historic buildings—and in avoiding anything that looks like a commitment.
Naomi LeBlanc is a lingerie shop owner with a zest for life that’s as vibrant as the city she calls home. Sophisticated yet wild, she’s unlike anyone Gage’s ever met.
For ten months, Gage does the he dates her—and only her. But when Naomi confesses she’s in love with him—and makes it clear that loyalty isn’t optional, Gage reminds her he’s never been the happily-ever-after kind of guy. Heartbroken, she ends their relationship.
But Gage can’t get Naomi out of his head—or his heart. Every other woman feels like a pale shadow of the one who got away. When he sees Naomi with another man, jealousy ignites a fire he didn’t know existed.
For the first time in his life, Gage wants to get over past traumas and fight for a woman. But it looks like Naomi has moved on, and she may now be out of his league.

No more Maya Alden for me. At least Gage wasn’t as despicable as her other heroes but she can’t write a strong heroine to save her life. Every single heroine she writes misses and longs for a man who treats them like garbage and throws them away. I wanted to scream when Naomi was still pining for Gage even when she thought he slept with Claudia. I want a heroine who has some self respect and vows to never think of that man again until he proves himself worthy. I want a heroine who’s gonna make that man suffer in the most delicious ways. That doesn’t happen in her books at all.
I’m bummed because this looked so good that I preordered it, so now I own it… and it was just ok. I absolutely devoured the first half when Gage was being a ginormous jackass. I do love these fictional assholes and the drama-llama they stir up. But then things started getting BORING with all the wine, decorating, lingerie, New Orleans, architecture, history, restoration descriptions and filler. Yawn.
These books all follow the same formula, and it’s a soapy formula, so… they won’t be for everyone. As a general guideline if you hate one chances are you’ll dislike them all. With that said, I like soap and have enjoyed this author, and this wasn’t my favorite.
Bottom Line- It started out strong with Gage pushing Naomi away after she caught feelings in their strongly communicated no strings sexual relationship, but it quickly got bogged down with unnecessary descriptions and filler. Then I felt like Gage took too long to get with the program after acknowledging his feelings. It felt forced and dry; I never became emotionally invested in them. I didn’t even go to find their extended epilogue; I simply didn’t care.
So we have an emotionally unavailable hero who is traumatized from something 15 years ago and an emotionally over available heroine who is trying to belong in. It was quite a nice story though I would like some more grovel from the hero. It felt like the heroine gave in way too easy because she found a family who could blend in.
I can officially write this author off. Naomi baby im pretend you moved on and didnt get back with that man.
and gage you a manchild. im not rating it since I DNF but ill give you the cliffnotes. Naomi said I love you dude got scared or whatever and ghosted her and took another woman out and kissed her infront of Naomi trying to get her to see and move on. he got his wish and he gets MAD WHEN SHE MOVES ON AND DOESNT WANNA TALK SEE HIM AT ALL?!?!
like?!?! men??? and from other reviews I saw. he goes on dates and so does she.
★★★. I’m so upset this didn’t hit for me as much as Maya’s other books. Her men are always LOSERS and some even have the best groveling. The women she writes always are strong enough to know their worth yet I couldn’t see it here.
Gage definitely groveled and earned Naomi back. There’s no doubt with that. I do believe he loves her and wants her forever. HOWEVER, there is a small part of me that thinks if Lia was alive and they broke up and she came back to him, he’d leave Naomi in a heart beat. I understand grief and how there is no time to heal but….she died when they were teenagers and he hasn’t been a monk all these years so why is he still harping on this? Why didn’t his parents send him to therapy sooner? It just was off.
Naomi..she was strong for five minutes. She never got angry. She never like went off on him fully. He called you a stage five clinger, ghosted you for two days, shows up with another woman, kisses her and you just….smile and nod. She had like no backbone and forgave him way faster than I would have liked. Also her apologizing at the end???? BE SO SERIOUS THERE WAS NO NEED.
Naomi deserved to at least get some action with Jonah. It’s so weird how Gage was written to almost sleep with a woman to the point of the other woman pushing him in her only for him to stop it all the way yet Naomi couldn’t even get anything???? Authors need to stop pushing this narrative that women need to be with only one man during a breakup when the men get to try and sleep with a bunch. Let the women live and get some pleasure.
This is 3 stars because I so like Maya’s books. Her betrayals always hurt and her angst is good. I do wish this one was just a little better for me.
For my safety readers, I wouldn’t call this safe for some. Gage kisses another woman on page. He talks about his past A LOT. There is an on page scene of him with another woman during separation. They almost go all the way, but he stops it (mentioned above) He also has a dead girlfriend who was the reason he didn’t admit he was in love with Naomi (made no sense). Naomi goes on a date with a man and kisses him. Jealousy scenes for Gage.
Gage is in love with Naomi but won’t allow his feelings because he was in love once when he was a teen and she was killed in a mva. You will enjoy this book if you want a lot of New Orleans architectural history.
After Reading How He Was Committed To Fucking Claudine, I'm Not Sure This Book Of Him Centering Himself And His Healing, Was The Romantic Tome You Thought
Omg ladies, you do not need to fix him.
The moment he touches someone else, the body is the organ of emotion, the only thing that will prove love, is severe ego death.
And this fucker needs it.
Instead he gets babied and toddlerised into every choice.
Fuck I hate him, still emotionally linked to Lia, but pretending hes emotionally linked to Naomi.
Pick a lane.
Swear, why do Maya's relationships all need a HR department?
Came For A Romance, Got A Wet Blanket Who Had No Issues Trusting Cars After Lia Died In One, But Mistreats Women Instead, And Pretends Love Makes You Hurt Someone
Imagine being fooled by flowers, future fertiliser, that he loves you, when he ditched you after months of love that you gave him.
If he has to "realise" he loved her all along, when love is explicitly defined as long term, consistent choices that facillitate that a person FEEL loved, you know, not rejected and insecure, then I need Ego Death.
Where was the Ego Death?
I got no Ego Death, he didn't even propose with a ring, and thats the shittiest standard that Liberal ghostly women have, flowers, chocolates and jewellery, and you couldn't even do that.
"i don want to own you..."
She works in Lingerie, if the Patriarchy died tomorrow, her boring ass clients would have nobody to cloth their body for.
She pretends shes a feminist, but women like her and Sabrina Carpenter and Taylor Swift need to grift on being Anti-Patriarchy, meaning they'd have to stop getting on their Daddy Dick Me knees for it, to actually be a feminist.
Naomi loves the show, thats who she is, she dressed up for you, why are we pretending she would consider a ring Ownership?
Bitch wanted to be owned on page one.
Doormat.
Wow and his mum lets him centre himself in how he treats others.
I really don't understand the privileged people of the world, so untouched by pain, they hold onto it in the form of angst, performing trauma.
This feels like he was cheating on Naomi the whole time with Lia.
Ew, imagine feeling free with someone and hes hooked on compost.
Able to get into a car but not able to be nice to women.
So fucking performative.
But thats what the Unseen, Unloved and utterly Unfucked women want, to feel like they can encourage him to heal.
Ugh, no.
Touching two women emotionally all through this.
Hes in his 30s, how has he still got this dysregulated response to death?
Is he that much of a privileged Narcissist?
It was YEARS ago.
Oh I don't care, people literally starve in front of a Liberals and their emotional stunting.
Women just some more building tools to him and she fell for that.
And nuanced him too.
Say words that mean something, stop speaking to fucking readers!
Tell him he mistreats women.
No, just you, just Personal Exceptionalism, so he never has to systemically grow, only grow for you.
Ugh.
"Orange Blossoms, I make my own perfume"
Naomi, are you a person? You read like a Social Media influencer, no depth.
The way shes reading these letters, letting him condition her into forgetting her own feelings and how he reacts to new sensory, ie mistreating people.
Liberals are so easily won.
Gifts are toxic after he touched another woman with intent.
And he intended to fuck Claudine, he just got caught because he suddenly grew an ego, and i Needed ego death.
The H is a blue collar worker, for a change, and lives a life of reverse snobbery. You work with your hands, we get it, and you're emotionally stunted.
There's a Kristen Ashley-ish feel to the heroine but wit decadent lingerie instead of shoes
Both were a little boring, and it almost made me long for one of the cruel, entitled bozos Alden usually serves up.
However, the presence of a third character, New Orleans, saved it. I love New Orleans, and it is everyone that Maya Alden writes. Or I should say that the French Quarter is everything she writes about.
Sometimes all it takes to change your world is three little words those being "I love you". This book is one that is going to stay with you long after you finish reading it. It is beautiful, heartbreaking, heartwarming and ultimately left me smiling. With dialougue and one liners that are going to leave you gasping in awe.
Gage is upfront from the start commitment (love) is not for him. Naomi makes the mistake of falling in love with him and even worse she tells him. That is enough to scare Gabe into running for the hills. He is not gentle about it, and he is thoughtless with Naomi feelings after this more than once.
It takes seeeing her with another man for him to start to confront his feeling for her and the reason he is so set against committment and love, not an easy process for him given he had held firm on this for so many years.
At its core this book is a second chance romance and if that is all you take from this book you will not be disappointed as it really delivers. However as a long time read of Maya Alden I have come to appreciate the way she subtly brings layer upon layer of meaning to her books.
Its a book about second chances not only those we seek from others but those we seek from ourselves. It is about the cost of grief and trauma when not dealt with. It reminds us that yes love can destoy but wow can it also heal and transform ourlives.
It is also a lesson in seeking redemption or a second chance - words are great but you know what cannot be argued with - showing up, consistently and with no expectations. It is a lesson in giving someone the time to heal from the damage you have caused. This book teaches us that love, make that the right love is worth the effort.
And a word to the wise you are going to want to go to New Orleans once you read this book.
I really hated him for about 20% of the book. First he kissed the one girl, and then he got naked with another. He kissed her, and then he was thinking of hands going here and there, and clothes hitting the floor. I know he didn't have actual intercourse but still it really put me off. I wish we hadn't been privy to that scene but we did and it was disappointing. He was awful. Then he's fighting to get her back because he saw her with another guy and was jealous. It totally pissed me off but since we got his thoughts on everything, I know he felt guilty and bad about what he did and he really did love her but I wish that he hadn't hurt the heroine so much. The music references in this book were awesome though and I loved it. You could almost feel New Orleans. It was awesome. And the book itself ended at 76% so just be prepared.
What I loved: I loved how Gage(H) realized he was in love with Naomi(h) and went about fixing his mistakes and himself by going to therapy. I also liked how Gage went to the cemetery and said his goodbye.
What I didn’t like: I felt like Naomi should have been more understanding. She knew Gage didn’t want anything serious but went ahead and said I love you. Yeah he handle it all wrong but when he told her why, I felt she should have given him some grace.
***Major Spoilers/ Details/Triggers: H kisses ow in front of h, h overhears him say mean things about h. The H and h have been seeing each other with the intention of just having a good time. H doesn’t want anything serious and told the h this. When the h tells the H that she loves him, H freaks out and brings a woman to a place where he knows the h will be and kisses her. h upset of course leaves. H tells the h that he doesn’t want a serious relationship and the h tells him that she can no longer be with him. Later on the h runs into the H with his friend. The friend hits on the h and the h turns him down and doesn’t like how the H just let him hit on her…like the H was passing her on to his friend. h decides to go on a date with om. H gets upset when he sees the h with om. h overhears him tell ow that the only reason he asked her out was because the h is a five star clinger and the h didn’t take the hint. h upset leaves. When he goes to see the h he tells her why he is afraid to be in a relationship. When the H was younger he was in an accident that killed the woman he loved. Now he is afraid to love someone else that might leave him. h tells him that still didn’t give him the right to say the things he said. H realizes he messed up and that he truly loves the h. H goes about fixing what he broke and gets the h back. HEA with them married.
Final thoughts: This was a nice betrayal book with good grovel.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Summary: H falls for (but doesn't realize it) and then hurts h bc past reasons. Sees her dating. Realizes he loves her. Goes on a grovel tour. Wins her back.
His inner dialogue is incredibly helpful for context. His grovel includes but was not limited to being patient and giving her time, genuine accountability, calling her baby in a LOT of ways that worked, throwing pebbles at her window - Romeo and Juliet style, coffee, flowers, macrons, champagne...
And lace. Because, and I quote, he said she was "Soft, complicated, worth holding onto."
The engagement ring he had made out of recovered/salvaged steel from a job that had incredible sentimental value to both of them. The perfect small, intimate wedding that exactly matched who she was.
And let's not forget him referencing movies and songs like Say Anything, Top Gun, Ten Things I Hate About You, The Rolling Stones.
Their chemistry was off the charts. The character and scene/location development were brilliant (There's a character named Tess Ticular which alone gets five gold literary stars). Support for the heroine, including his family, was beautiful. The well timed humor in the midst of pain was perfect and balanced.
That said, I feel that this review is best shared in quotes, given that I have never highlighted more in my life.
Aurelia - Naomi's bff “It’s a date, not a marriage license. You’re having dinner and drinks with a hot, successful man who flirted with you like a gentleman and asked for your number in front of God, his sister-in-law, and lingerie. If that’s a mistake, I’d like to make several.”
“You can’t just fix this,” she continued, voice firm again. “It’s not one of your old buildings. You can’t strip it down to studs, polish it up, and slap your name on the work. Naomi doesn’t need a fixer. She needs a partner.”
Della Walker - Gage's mother "But, baby—grief is a visitor, not a roommate.” I swallowed. “Yeah, Mama.”
Lou Walker - Gage's father "I'm this moron's father. You can call me Lou."
Gage's friend Delphi's Aunt - Dr. Jane Lapointe PhD. aka Auntie Griselle aka Mama Lune - Full time PhD. Clinical Psychologist and part time psychic. “Sit down, bébé. You’re leaking heartache all over my floor.” “Now, what I can tell you is that you are textbook grief-avoidant, romantically dissociative, and emotionally constipated. But you’re trying. I’ll give you that.”
And Finally....... "He watched me the way a man watches the horizon—like something he’s been waiting for had finally come into view."
This book is about the second chance journey (not very long after their breakup) of Gage & Naomi, a couple in their 30s, who had been in a situationship for about 10 months.
Gage had been clear that he wasn’t the commitment type of guy but Naomi fell for him and that’s when the story begins more or less.
I enjoyed this book a lot. It had a fast pace, angst, pretty pictures of New Orleans, didn’t last longer than it should and made me feel the MCs emotions. I finished it in a couple of days.
I really liked Naomi. I could feel her pain. I admired the way she handled the break up with dignity. And how she was mad with herself for showing weakness when he first came back. I only wish she made him suffer a bit longer.
Despite the fact that Gage had been an @$$h0le at times, I can’t say I hated him. Especially after the breakup when he started realizing his mistake. I admit I enjoyed seeing him suffer.
I really enjoyed this one. The characters were great, the location, and culture on point. It almost felt like I was walking the streets of New Orlean’s.
H and h have been together for a year with H being up front that he does not do commitment and the marriage, kids etc. despite that h falls in love and tells him she loves him. The H spirals and ghosts her for a few days before going on a date with OW where he knew she would be and kisses the OW.
The h is devastated but internally she takes part blame as he warned her. He goes to her store to end things officially but the h does it and she stands tall and tells him the truth. We then have the internal struggle of both. The h trying to get over the H and the H trying to forget the h by dating and trying to slept with others. Warning he does get particularly close to sleeping with one of the women, like pants off and her urging him on. There is no real detail given here in what they did leading up to it but reading between the lines it was close.
The H lost someone he loved at 19 and saw her die. He buried his grief and decided at that point he would never love again and loose them. He works through all of that with the help of his parents who I loved and his friend that worked with him and his aunt who is a therapist. He makes more mistakes with a little brutal overheard comment to OW about h. The h lays it out how he hurt her.
This one did not have much grovel but it did have redemption where the H worked on his issues. He started to show up for the h, helping out in projects, bringing her lunch etc. He made active changes. He did give a sincere apology but more importantly he worked on his issues and became open and honest with the h.
I 100% did believe he loved her. A few things helped was he did not go through with sleep with someone else, his changes, his apologies. He also apologized to the OW he used to drive his point home to h, the date girl. I was happy about that as it says a lot about someone who can use another person like that. So the fact that he also apologized to her for his actions helped to show that he was being sincere in moving forward and on. His Dad and Mom were almost and called him out. Really good read with New Orleans taking a staring role here. 100% recommend.

Wow. I mean.. he is a commitment-phobe but he’s also kinda an AH for no reason but again, he wasn’t bad.
Unfortunately, when someone prefers to hurt you again and again and again, can’t really say that I believe that they love you. I understand that he had a dramatic experience but he had also 15 years to work on healing himself and move on from his ex. I can’t do dead wife/gf trope and I’m not sure if I saw it in the TW.
FMC is not a doormat which was a good thing, I kinda liked her even though she was whining and was heart broken over a man that had made clear that he wasn’t into exclusive relationships and a future with someone etc.
While there’s no cheating, we get close to having his pov of being with someone else. They have broken up for months though and he gets close to have sex with someone else but he stoped. Again, they have broken up and he was trying to move on. Couldn’t even blame him tbh
Grovel was almost nonexistent but was matching the plot, so all good with that.
This book is about Gage and Naomi. He restores old houses and property around New Orleans and she owns a very tasteful lingerie store. Both are very into each and complement each other’s personalities very well.
Problem is, Gage wants to keep things casual. Naomi says the dreaded words that have sent many a men running when they fear commitment. Gage decides to drive point home that they are done by parading another date in front of her. Naomi is a very strong woman, despite the fact that she had a hard time growing up. All she’s wanted to is to feel like she belongs and have someone want her for herself.
Naomi decides to move on and try dating someone else. Gage sees this and then has to have a very introspective look at himself to decide what he wants. He doesn’t want commitment, but he doesn’t want anyone else to have her. He avoids commitment due to an event in his teenage years. Luckily, Gage seeks out some help, albeit unconventional at first, but help—and realizes what he wants. And what he wants is Naomi.
Like other Maya Alden books, I love both characters and the grovel. However, this book seemed a bit harsher in some of the situations that Gage used to try and make Naomi distance herself from him. But, she more than makes up for it when he gets his head on straight and fights for his love, Naomi.
I did receive an ARC of this book. This is my honest review.

Gage and Naomi’s story was one of love unexpected. Gage may be one of the most stubborn H I have ever encountered. That man was difficult and I loved that Naomi did not sit around waiting for him to come to his senses. I loved the way she wouldn’t settle and moved on with her life and not to accept less than what she deserves. I also kind of loved the way Gage pined for her. He deserved that for going out of his way to hurt her. I kinda loved how it blew up in his face.
There will likely be some mild spoilers ahead, but I will try to keep them to a minimum as I write.
I love New Orleans! I lived on the Gulf Coast for a few years and visited there a few times and I just adored the culture and atmosphere. Laissez Les bon temps rouler indeed! I loved hearing of the old architecture and the landmarks and locations surrounding them and the ghost and historical walks! It made for a romantic backdrop for Naomi and Gage to fall for each other.
This was a book that I had been eagerly anticipating and it lived up to my expectations and more! I do kind of wish that Naomi had immediately jumped back into the dating saddle, but I still loved it as I do all Maya’s books! I am glad that there was OM drama to counteract all the OW drama.
I received an early ARC of this for my honest review and I can honestly say I loved it! I love a good second chance romance and I love watching a man do the chasing! This was a fun ride and I love that it wasn’t quite as heavy as so many second chance stories can be. I loved the focus on the present and I loved that he sought therapy to better himself. It always made an H that much more appealing to me!
I’d love to see more of the side characters. Aurelie and Jonah intrigued me, not necessarily together, but more that I just want more of them and would love them each to get their own stories! They were great characters and there was still a bit of mystery to them. I definitely want to see more of them!
This was an excellent and enjoyable read! I would recommend it to anyone who loves a good second chance story or any kind of romance really!
Better than the last 3 of Mayas I’ve read. Gage was as Mayas formula works a compete douche for a good 40% of the book until he realised his reason for avoiding love and then did a 180 and fought for his woman.

Another infinity star book from this author. I loved Gage and Naomi. I love that Maya can break my heart and put it back together by the end of the book. I loved the character growth and angst is always perfection.
Idk how she does it but every single time I read a second chance story from Maya it blows me away it puts me in all my feels! This one was so freaking good! Give me a few and I might come back and add more to my review. But as of now I’m speechless! Definitely recommend and definitely gets my five star approval!
I received a free ARC of this book and devoured it. This review is my honest opinion.
My oh my, I loved this! Firstly, it made me want to take a trip to New Orleans SO bad. Maya Alden describes the city so well that you just want to BE there. The MFC is amazing. She has had it rough but she has built an amazing life and group of friends. I wanted to punch the MMC for a good long while but he gets there eventually. This is a book that makes you want to go to New Orleans, explore these places--shop in Naomi's lingerie store please! Maya Alden has done it again. I think i have now read everything she has written, and I am constantly waiting for the next book to be released.
Gage thinks that Naomi and him are just having a fling-no attachments, nothing permanent. But Naomi says I love you and Gage cuts and runs and Naomi lets him go. She tries to rebuild her heart and her self-esteem over several months, never quite reaching back to normal. And Gage keeps questioning his choices, but refusing to let go of his no attachments lifestyle. It isn’t long, though, when Gage realizes his mistake and then fights for Naomi and his happiness.
Naomi was strong throughout the story, even when her heart was broken. She believed in herself and what she wanted and refused to compromise. Gage was damaged by an incident from his past, and is the one with the long row to hoe emotionally. Fortunately, Gage has many people to lean on to push him forward. Their HEA is long fraught but beautiful.
The book is part of the author’s modern, vintage romance series. The story is a bit slow in the middle but not for long. This book was an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I so wanted to be obsessed with this story. The sneak peeks from Maya Alden’s email list and the first two chapters in her previous books made me think so. But I found myself getting to 50% of the book and genuinely not caring. All the flashbacks were spicy, which is fine but there’s been no point to this point that I care if Naomi and Gage get back together except that Naomi is in love and suddenly randomly after fighting against it for half the book, suddenly Gage wants her back. There was no real epiphany moment, it was just in turning the page, suddenly he was in love and wanted her back and everyone is telling him he’ll have to work for it.
We’ve never seen their relationship be anything but her in love and him keeping her at a distance, so why do I care?
Gage isn’t the worst Maya Alden MMC and I suppose that’s a win. But I guess him being middle of the road, makes the whole thing bland.
“But how did he suddenly go from not willing to commit to saying he was ready to jump in?” Exactly, Naomi, exactly.
My favorite character, is the city of New Orleans. All the fun facts and the way that the description jumped off the pages. It felt like New Orleans was given more depth and thought than Naomi or Gage was.
“We didn’t get back together. We renovated from the ground up.”
I did like them in the end. After his family got involved. Once we knew Jonah wasn’t gonna be an option. Once Gage went to therapy. I like that Naomi was slower to the recoupling. Overall it was decent. I wish everything that happened at the end could’ve happened sooner because I did like them in the end. I loved the ending, but at that point I was over the story.
Maya has once again woven a captivating tale that resonates deeply with readers. In this story, she explores the complexities of human emotions and the rules we set for ourselves to avoid past pain. Gage's determination to guard his heart is relatable, yet his journey shows that our hearts often defy our best efforts to control them.
The turmoil that ensues when life disrupts our carefully laid plans is palpable, and the author's portrayal of Gage's inner struggle is both poignant and authentic. As Gage grapples with his feelings and ultimately finds redemption, it's a powerful reminder that love can't be simply switched on or off.
Naomi's character adds another layer of depth to the story, highlighting the universal struggle to navigate love and loss. Maya's writing is, as always, exceptional, and this book is a testament to her skill in crafting stories that linger long after the final page is turned.
This story is a love story with a second chance. It is a classic of this authors writing style. When a man is a player with a tragic past, he guards his heart by only giving himself the physical pleasure of a relationship, not the emotional. Gage thinks he can't give his heart, until he pushes the women he is seeing away. Only then does he realize what he lost. Naomi also has a past with tragic loss. When she tells Gage of her love, the fallout is pure pain. It will take work and effort to make these two a couple again. I liked the characters and the New Orleans feel, like many of the authors other books. What I didn't like was the in depth detail of every place they went to, or ate and drank at. If you know New Orleans it probably gave you a warm feeling of connection, but since I don't, all I got was more of a tourist pamphlet vibe.
I never mind OWD, so Gage attempting to move on from Naomi by seeing other women isn’t a bother for me.
I was just so BORED. Being inside the heads of these two was like listening to that teacher in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. they just droned on and on and on…but I swear, they never said anything worth reading.
Yes, Gage was way less of an ass compared to most Maya Alden heroes, but I found him to be so…meh. Like, THIS is the man Naomi can’t get over? Why? And the flashbacks to their relationship don’t help at all - they just reaffirm these two liked to fuck. Which wasn’t even the problem with them so wasn’t what we needed to see from their relationship.
I normally love to read Maya Alden books to hate them (because she never lands the grovel for me, but the buildup and betrayal is always soooo good), but this one fell so flat that I felt nothing and couldn’t fathom attempting to finish it.
Started to give this one four stars, but looking back on it, I finished it four days ago and already have forgotten a lot of it. Naomi and Gage have been FWB for ten months and Naomi caught feelings. We open the book with Gage preparing to "show" her what they are by going on a date with another woman in front of her rather than, I dunno, using his Big Boy words and talking to her about how he doesn't love her back (which, of course, since this is a romance novel, we all know he does). He'd rather hurt her in public though, and of course, Naomi sees him making out with another woman in front of her, and gets the message -- not that he hadn't already made his response to her use of the L-word pretty obvious when he ran screaming into the night after she said it. A larger chunk of the book than I'd like featured the two of them pining aimlessly for each other and it doesn't pick back up again until Gage finally gets his head out of his ass.
Not my favorite by the author, but certainly not my least favorite either. Solid three stars.
