The New Equation is not just a book. It is a call to rise, rethink, and rebuild everything. Join the mission. Become part of the new equation.
Sibusiso Sambo’s, The New Equation: Rethinking Humanity, Justice, and the Future We Must Build is a stimulating read. It is the kind of book that must be read with open eyes and an open heart. I cannot say I agreed with everything Sibusiso spoke about, but it was a compelling picture and vision for South Africa, and Africa, that is exactly as the title suggests, a new equation and a new way.
What I particularly enjoyed about the book was Sibusiso’s ability to see beyond what is and to see what could be. I love his referencing of African wisdom as building blocks to build on. His concept of custodianship rather than socialism or capitalism is a compelling idea, especially as he relates this to the use of land, and how stewardship is at its core. His views on harnessing AI were an interesting inclusion in the book, and stimulating to reflect on.
Part of my challenge with the book was more a case of implementation. How do we get from where we are now to this new equation or new picture? I kept on thinking, if only we had a clean slate to work with and to test several of Sibusiso’s ideas, that would be extremely valuable. Whilst I use the word ‘radical’ in the best way possible, these ideas are that. And they would have to be implemented carefully. There is a further reality that is entrenched in all political systems, and that is greed, power, corruption, and authoritarian leaders. In Africa Betrayed, George Ayittey writes “...between 1957 and 1990 there were more than 150 African heads of state and only six relinquished power voluntarily.” He also references Colonialism and reminds readers that whilst many of Africa’s problems relate to colonialism, there is a huge giant that Africa faces with post-colonial leadership. And unless that is overcome, Africa will struggle to progress. It continues being plagued by greed, power, corruption, and authoritarian leadership.
I love it when dreamers dream, presenting a potentially better picture of our collective future. This is what I enjoyed about Sibusiso’s ‘The New Equation.’ I trust this book will find it way into the right hands and that it will inspire new thinking around the future of our beautiful country. I give this book a five rating, not because I agree with everything in this book, but because Sibusiso can see the difficulties and has allowed that to help him think outside of the box.
THE NEW EQUATION by Sibusiso Sambo is a short but impactful read. It reflects upon the current state of affairs in African countries particularly South Africa and gives ideas on how to improve the situation.
The author recommends many a novel and out of the box ideas and if implemented can transform the landscape of his country. It focusses on general topics of injustice, inequality and economic disparity which are problems not only in Africa but around the world; where power is only in the hands of a few individuals and how they manipulate the population for their own worldly gains.
I specially liked the African concept of Ubuntu which the author emphasis in this book. Also, his idea of using AI in a positive manner is interesting and something to reflect upon. I sincerely hope that this book falls in the hands of the right people so that they can gain valuable insights on how to move forward in the future.
The New Equation by Sibusiso Sambo is a visionary and timely book that challenges readers to rethink justice, power, and humanity's future. Blending African philosophy, modern science, and ethical insight, Sambo offers fresh ideas for solving some of the world’s most urgent problems—like inequality, unemployment, and broken systems.
What makes this book special is its global yet deeply African perspective. It's ideal for those who believe in justice, dignity, and a shared future for all. If you're a curious thinker, student, or changemaker, this book will inspire you to see the world differently—and act.
This book primarily explores local issues in South Africa, especially the lack of authority individuals have over land management, while exposing the harmful effects of imperialism and colonial occupation on communities. Throughout its chapters, the book widens its perspective by not only addressing problems but also presenting solution-oriented approaches. Written from a political standpoint, it is grounded in South Africa’s profound philosophical tradition, best captured by the phrase “I am because we are” — the essence of Ubuntu.
