It was also shortlisted for Children’s Book of the Year at the An Post Book Awards.

I don't read a lot of graphic novels, but this was a joyous, fun, zany read. The Squid Squad was a great way to introduce kids to entertaining facts about sea life (I love learning facts in a fun way!).

The members of the squad each has a special ability but this isn't a run of the mill superhero story where a baddie does wrong and the squad has to protect a distressed civilian. We have four stories in this bundle and there are a range of adventures including working out problems at a hairdo competition, investigating a secret sound and problems with a magical portal toilet.

The characters quarrel but learn how to figure things out and there's plenty of fun sea humour and a great sea world imagined. The pictures are bright, bold and appealing.

I loved that we concentrate on sea animals that aren't usually given attention like squid and sea slugs and sea anemone. I loved that it's packed with unusual facts. I loved that it's zany and the creativity used in building a special world for the sea life. The silly humour really worked to make the stories attractive for this age group and the pictures fit with the style.
