Much like with its predecessor*, The Green Planet is a companion book to the TV show for younger readers. But what's good for kids can't be bad for adults so of course this documentary-fangirl had to get it. :D
David Attenborough and the BBC's awesome crew take us around the planet to discover how amazing plants are. From the different habitats they've colonized to their amazing feats, plants are too often taken for granted (even more than animals). They feed us, they heal us, they produce and clean the very air we breathe.
The book explains how plants work in general, how they are affected by and influence the weather. It introduces us to the different kinds of plant life from the tropics and deserts to under and on water and also explains the effect of the seasons on plant life as well as the interconnectedness of funghi and root networks.
The book is informative and quite detailed despite only giving an overview (it can't go deep into the matter, naturally, since it's for kids and not overly thick), but never boring. Accompanying the fascinating facts is incredibly gorgeous art:
As you can see from the pictures, it is almost impossible to tell of the plants without also telling of the creatures they are housing and feeding (animals and humans by the way, but I deliberately left out pages where homo sapiens was addressed). It's because plants ARE this planet, just like water is. They aren't just vital for life but part of the basic cornerstones necessary for life to be possible in the first place.
I loved reading this colourful and informative book and think it should be part of every kid's education since it also makes one curious about certain aspects which then invites you to dig deeper and get further literautre on the subject.
For those wondering: yes, the TV mini series of the same name is once again a kick-ass production of incredible high quality and narrated by my favorite naturalist.

I just wanted to preface this by saying that my rating merely reflects the fact that I probably would've enjoyed this more if I'd read it instead of listening to it as an audiobook. While the narration was excellent, the facts interesting and well-explained, I would've loved to have the visual experience as well - unfortunately the audiobook was the only format I could get my hands on from my library. I watched the entire BBC series last year and absolutely loved it, so I think I was partly spoilt by how immersive that had been.
As a side note, I really appreciated how much emphasis was placed on climate change - how our green planet has been inevitably affected by it, and how we've been trying to combat that change. I especially loved the example of the "Throw to Grow" campaign in Africa - something that's simple but effective, and involves the whole community as well.

We leven op een prachtige planeet en het groen erop hebben we nodig. Groene Planeet is het boek naar de baanbrekende serie van David Attenborough.
Overal om ons heen strijden planten tegen hun vijanden. Van de boom in het park, tot het onkruid tussen de tegels, alles voert een strijdt en overal is wel iets bijzonders aan.
Planten zijn in vele opzichten belangrijk en bijzonder, en wij hebben ze hard nodig.

De wonderlijke wereld van de planten
Groene Planeet is een non-fictie boek voor kinderen naar de serie van David Attenborough, geschreven door Leisa Stewart-Sharpe. In deze serie neemt David Attenborough je mee in de wonderlijke wereld van de planten en bomen. Het legt uit waar we de natuur voor nodig hebben en benoemt hierbij bijzondere planten en bomen. Dit gaat gecombineerd met illustraties volledig over de bladzijdes heen, volledig in kleur.
Het boek legt uit dat het groen op de wereld in gevecht is, waarom het in gevecht is en waarom het belangrijk is dat wij als mensheid hier wat aan doen. Het laat vervolgens zien hoe een plant, over het algemeen gezien, werkt en wat het doet. De termen die hierbij gebruikt worden zijn vrij lastig en kan voor kinderen als ingewikkeld ervaren worden. Het wordt op een leuke manier uitgelegd, waardoor de uitleg wel goed te begrijpen is, de termen zullen echter mogelijk lastiger te onthouden zijn.
Het leuke aan de uitleg is dat de uitleg ondersteund wordt met duidelijke illustraties gemaakt door Kim Smith. Zij brengen de uitleg tot leven en maken het geheel interessant om te lezen en te bekijken.
De tekst is verder interessant genoeg voor kinderen. Bijzondere bomen en planten worden getoond en een aantal krijgen een spotlight. Zoals bijvoorbeeld “poep plant”. Kinderen zullen door de naam van deze plant al geïnteresseerd zijn om te lezen/ te luisteren naar de uitleg.
Samen lezen of zelf ontdekken
De tekst in het boek is spijtig genoeg vrij klein en daarnaast soms geplaatst op een drukke achtergrond, waardoor het regelmatig lastig te lezen is. Dit boek kan dan ook beter gelezen worden in combinatie met een volwassene.
Leise Stewart-Sharpe heeft als journalist gewerkt voordat ze als kinderboekenschrijfster aan de slag ging. Nu schrijft ze fictie en non-fictie kinderboeken.
Om naar de plaatjes te kijken is het boek ook perfect. De illustraties zijn prachtig, kleurrijk en komen realistisch over. Ze vullen de tekst goed aan en kinderen kunnen er een hoop van op steken. De namen van de dieren en planten zijn vetgedrukt en goed leesbaar, kinderen kunnen hierbij goed oefenen om zelf namen te koppelen aan de illustraties.

I recommend getting the physical book in this case. I listened to the audiobook and while it's superbly narrated, the audiobook suffers quite a bit without the illustrations. I'd liken it to listening to a David Attenborough series without watching it.
Having said that, the information is expressed in an engaging way and I like what Stewart-Sharpe focused on and how they built from natural environment and plants to how humans have effected them. I particularly appreciate the discussion on monoculture such as almonds and how this impacts pollinators (and how we have made it more difficult for us to grow the food we like due to our impact).

Mijn eerste boek in DAGEN! Haha, het laatste boek dat ik las was van 22 Maart. Maar met een puppy, een mentale gezondheid van niks, en dat woorden niet bleven hangen.. kwam lezen er niet van. Maar nu wilde ik het toch weer proberen! En ik koos daarvoor dit prachtige boek! Wat een feestje zeg. Zulke prachtige illustraties die je helemaal meenemen naar waar het verhaal overgaat of je heel duidelijk de planten en de dieren specifiek laat zien. En de informatie is ook razend interessant, normaal ben ik niet zo van de OMG-klimaat boeken (sorry, ik lees al genoeg erover dagelijks op allerlei plekken), maar hier voelde het niet zeurderig of doomsday. Dus yeah! Ik heb weer wat nieuwe dingen geleerd, heerlijk!

Na de Blauwe Planeet kun je nu ook Groene planeet lezen. De opzet van Groene Planeet lijkt op die van Blauwe planeet, en neemt de lezer aan de hand van illustraties van Kim Smith mee over de hele wereld.
Overal op de wereld zijn bloemen en planten te vinden, dus Groene planeet bespreekt allerlei verschillende plekken. Van de woestijnwereld tot zeetuinen, overal zijn planten! Of, zoals het boek zelf zegt:
Planten zijn overal en helaas worden ze ook overal bedreigd door allerlei zaken – waaronder de invloed van de seizoenen en de mens. In Groene planeet leer je meer over deze strijd. Dit boek is een ode aan de groene aarde!
En wie kun je beter inspireren om om te kijken naar onze groene planeet dan de kinderen? De kleurrijke illustraties spreken tot de verbeelding en in de laatste pagina’s wordt ook een oproep gedaan aan alle plantenbeschermers. Wel vind ik – net als bij Blauwe planeet – het taalgebruik soms ingewikkeld voor kleinere kinderen.
