OK so strictly speaking this is not a shark book and thus not 100% right for Shark Week. However, it is about our waters (oceans, rivers etc) and therefore also talking about sharks.
I found this book by accident when looking for the bluray for the documentary of the same name (I LOVE documentaries by/with Sir Attenborough).
The book teaches young(er) and old(er) readers about everything watery on our planet. It therefore talks of seas and oceans, currents, reefs, ice and other habitats. It also shows what kind of life the different habitats support and how the ecosystem works overall.
Helping to bring the point across are lush illustrations showing the different places as well as the inhabitants:
The book thus teaches its readers about everything from bioluminescence to the food chain and adaptability which is basically a superpower in this world.
A wonderfully cute and pretty addition to my shelf!
Finally finished this after restarting it for what felt like 10 times, because I kept falling asleep (not because of the audiobook).
This was a fantastic production, I really enjoyed the narration and sound effects which made it very immersive. Very fascinating and full of interesting facts about many species and the oceans themselves.
A feast for the eyes and the mind, but best enjoyed in small bites.
Created in collaboration with BBC Earth, Blue Planet is packed with fascinating facts and stunning illustrations that bring the ocean’s wonders to life. It’s not a book to devour from cover to cover in one sitting. Instead, it’s the kind you dip into, letting a single page spark your curiosity before heading off to explore more on your own.
The sheer amount of information can be overwhelming if read all at once, but that’s also part of its charm.
I can easily imagine reading this again in a few years with my children, using it as a springboard for questions, conversations, and further discoveries.
With a brilliant forward by David Attenborough, the narrator of this television program, this book showcases the wonderous nature that can be found in our oceans.
Each chapter is titled the same as the TV documentary episodes, The Deep, Coasts and so one. Each section in this book is several pages, and packs in a wealth of information. The chapters are not placed in this book in the same order as the levels of the ocean, it jumps around, which can make for an unorthodox organizational method.
Within each chapter we see not only descriptions of the different animals, and conditions, at that level of the ocean, but we also are treated to Stories From...whatever section is being talked about. These stories highlight unusual features in that area of the ocean. A really fun example came from the Coral Reefs where we learned dolphins there play their own version of a game of catch.
The illustrations are extremely colorful, but soft in their presentation. No hugely loud colors, just vibrant painted and drawn depictions of the animals and their environment. One of the most interesting was the two page spread on Coasts. So many different elements were depicted, and you got to learn about various aspects of the life that call that part of the ocean home.
The book concludes with sections on ocean pollution, how you can be an ocean hero, and things we can do every day to help our oceans. If you enjoy books on ocean life, conservation, or animals check this book out.
Here's a stunning book, full of facts to create awe and wonder about our majestic seas and oceans.
Blue Planet II is a beautifully illustrated guide to marine life, including the aquatic deep, tropical seas and coral bays. As you'd expect for something to accompany the iconic BBC series narrated by Sir David Attenborough, it's high quality and written both empathetically and full of information. We are motivated to care through the book and understand the importance of biodiversity and preventing pollution.
Definitely one to check out and from experience, I can say this makes a lovely gift to receive too!
An absolutely stunning book, jam-packed full of interesting facts about incredible animals and their habitats. A fantastic book for the home or classroom.
This beautiful book is all about the ocean. The illustrations are engaging, and I like the fact that the text are different sized fonts so that younger readers can be read the larger facts and the older readers can get more information in the smaller. I also love that there are real scientists highlighted at the end, so show that not only is research still on-going but real careers that readers can aspire to pursue. A wonderful book on oceans for a home library, school, or future oceanographer.
Whether or not you watch the BLUE PLANET II series, this is a gorgeous book about the ocean. It has both nonfiction information along with some "stories" from each ocean habitat, that break up the text with some more lyrical language. Well written throughout and packed with information about the creatures that live in our oceans and their watery habitats, this is a wonderful book for kids. I love that it shares some less known animals and that it focuses a lot on what we can do to help our oceans.
An attractively designed and illustrated picture book companion to the BBC series The Blue Planet introducing the variety, expanse, mystery, and wonder in the depths of the oceans.
