Doctor Who: The Ministry of Death

Rate this book
Summoned back to Earth by the Space-Time telegraph, the Doctor and Sarah Jane find themselves assisting their old friends at UNIT not once but twice. But exactly how willing will a Time Lord be to be stuck in a single place once more?

15.1 The Ministry of Death by Robert Valentine (4 parts) - When the Brigadier uses the Space-Time Telegraph to summon the Doctor and Sarah Jane from their travels, they know it’ll be for something unusual. But neither could possibly expect something quite this strange. An electronics expert has died after being struck by lightning. But how could this possibly happen in his office? And that’s only the first death they discover. A wild scheme is underway. A case of twisted science and revenge. That's about to hit closer to home than they could possibly anticipate.

15.2 The Inhuman Empire by Phil Mulryne (2 parts) - Sarah is contacted by an old friend who knows her predilection for ‘rum goings on’, asking her to investigate unusual activities at the National Museum. Sarah agrees to look into it, with the Doctor tagging along - but they soon discover things are worse than they thought. Because the Museum is host to alien activity - very familiar aliens at that. And if they don't stop these relic hunters quickly, then humanity itself might not survive.

So this is a set of adventures of the 4th Doctor as played by Sir Tom Baker, the oldest living classic Doctor. He still has a very recognizable voice and still does a brilliant Doctor. Sarah Jane Smith & Harry are performed by new people which is somewhat annoying if you have just watched some adventures with this particular crew, and they do not sound even simular. The chap voicing the Brigadier does actually a splendid job sounding like him. The language chosen in the 4 parter and 2 parter is very British and 70's in its approach and thus placing the 4th Doctor where hé belongs in time.

The Ministry Of death (4 parts) sees the Doctor & Sarah Jane returning with the Tardis to earth after the Brigadier has contacted them. They are offered a case in which a victim has been hit by lightning inside his office. And soon more bizarre deaths take place after that Doctor and companions learn that all these dead scientists had been working on alien equipment which went horrible wrong. From here the Doctor has to find answers to questions not yet revealed. Certainly mismanagement of alien material should not have happened and it is up to the Doctor to solve.

The inhuman Empire (2 parts) sees the Doctor stranded on earth after the Brigadier has taken the Tardis and put it in a locked room. The Doctor is asked for the aftermath inventory of the material from the last story. He does not do that hé makes a mess and walks of flies away. The Doctor decides to follow Sarah Jane to her appointment with a friend who asks her for help on a mystery. The Doctor and ladies find themselves in the British Museum and smack in the middle of yet another alien invasion. The Brigadier and UNIT get involved. And in the end the Doctor and Sarah Jane are off again in the TARDIS.

Two lovely audio tales from the brilliant sir Tom Baker who has been my first Doctor and still is the best one so far. Vocally I doubt he shall ever be surpassed so I am glad that BF has snared him to continue the tales of his Doctor.
I enjoyed the two parter best but both tales are good fun and well worth your time. That said I am sure that Tom would make the reading of a telephone directory quite exciting .

A really solid boxset of stories. Recreating the Season 13 style UNIT stories, helping to explore the Doctor not wanting to stay around helping UNIT as much as the Third Doctor once did.

The Ministry of Death gives us a great murder mystery that sustains the full 4 part runtime.

The Inhuman Empire is a fun little story with a great secret returning monster in the form of the Nestene Consciousness and the Autons. Exploring what happened when they invaded Earth pre-plastic.

Both stories use the 4th Doctor, Sarah, Harry and The Brigadier effectively. Really adding to Season 13 and the end of UNIT regularly appearing in the show.

Looking forward to the boxset in June with 4 and Sarah back exploring space.

Review by story…

The Ministry of Death: The Doctor vs Dr Phibes from The Abominable Dr Phibes, and Hugo Strange’s Monster Men from Golden Age Batman was not at all what I expected but I’m so happy to have received it. Great character work creating a new and more fitting conclusion to the UNIT era of the show than the actual show did. Even blowing up UNIT HQ. Great story. Yes the new voices are distracting to me but even they don’t bother me too much. 4.5/5

The InHuman Empire: As has been commented elsewhere, this really needed to be a full four parter. Again, like the last story, this is bringing the UNIT era to a close by having the Doctor face against the Autons one last time. But rather than a proper conclusion, like the last story, it just feels like a rather weak addendum. Outside of that context, it’s a perfectly fine story, and it’s essential to the arc of this season, but it just wasn’t quite as good as I hoped. 3/5

Yet another enjoyable set of romps.
If there were any inserts or agendas or catering to the mythical modern audience i did not spot them as automatically i get a pissed off feeling.
I will be sorry when Toms reign on BF comes to an end.
I would say the second story would have made the far better four parter and the reveal did take me by surprise.Good story from Phil Mulryne.
Ok so not a Five star set but a relistenable set for me.
How easily the new Harry and Sarah work.
