The Fifth Doctor Adventures #15

Doctor Who: Helter Skelter

Rate this book
Field of Miracles by Lauren Mooney & Stewart Pringle - The Doctor, Tegan and Turlough arrive in the quaint village of Heatherington in 1951. But something strange is happening. In an England of post-war austerity, Heatherington is thriving – the shops are full of produce and everyone seems to have everything they’ve ever wanted, even if what they’ve wanted is the dead to return to them. The Doctor and his friends must stop the creeping invasion of the Asteri, wish-granting crystalline organisms of awesome destructive power, before they extract a terrible price from the villagers.

Helter Skelter by James Moran - When a bio-engineered planet and amusement park undergoes a critical malfunction, the entire planet tears itself apart – and the Doctor, Tegan and Turlough are thrown back to their arrival, trapped in a repeating time loop. But for some reason, only Tegan can see the loop, not the Doctor – it has been hidden from him somehow. So why can Tegan see it, and how is she going to fix it?

Land of Fools by Lauren Mooney & Stewart Pringle - The TARDIS arrives in London, 1980, but something has gone wrong with the timeline. The city is a quasi-police state, overseen by a mysterious new company, Luqos, which promises miraculous gifts to its followers. As Tegan takes off to reconnect with an old friend, and the Doctor teams up with young activist Zan, Turlough is pulled into the heart of Luqos by the shadowy ‘M’, where they discover an old enemy at work beneath the city.

I’m actually glad that I picked this up. I have been eyeing this release since they announced it. When it came out. I decided that I should treat myself. And quite the treat this is. I slowly developed an admiration for the Fifth Doctor Era. My favorite is Serpent in the Silver Mask. This Volume contains three, two-part episodes. Field of Miracles, Helter Skelter, and Land of Fools. Two stories, one of them is a loose over-arc.

It’s been a long time since I listened to a Big Finish release, and this reminds me of the magic of it. The pacing kept it steady throughout and gets right to the point, especially with Fields of Miracles / Land of Fools. I do like the idea that they are widening the narratives and making them more loose.

I enjoy the concept of Making a Wish kills you literally. The Asteri, an alien species that feeds on hosts by granting their deepest wish. It’s like the Kantrofarri, but with Wishes. And they feel like Cosmic Entities by their appearance and their abilities.

I do like the use of cause and effect in this volume, and with a meanwhile, elsewhere type of story. Helter Skelter is a light-hearted and fun tale, especially if you love Groundhog Day. And the Character study moments with the companions throughout add more greatness to it.

Nice entertaining set of stories.
Nothing ground-breaking, but comes with great performances, engaging plot and a nice opponent / monster in the form of the Asteri, who are the evil that comes when you wish upon a star.
Yes, we had mind-eating parasites before, but these have a great concept.
I personally liked the time-loop story with Tegan in the lead the best. Janet Fielding gives all and makes Tegan shine in this.

All three stories knock it out of the park! The cast are on great form and Janet Fielding especially takes the crown. Writing is cracking with some fab twists I didn't see coming. Big Finish at its best!
