Jacob Vibbich is a man of his word. With well intentions to keep his three decade long promise to his wife. A promise to someday return home, to the mountainous oasis of Claremont, PA. When he first mentioned the name to her it sounded foreign, like it didn’t belong. When they returned home it felt right unlocking memories that helped her remember that she made a promise too.
Fulfilling a promise is easier said than done. In their new home in neighboring Green Ridge, separated by nearly an hour from the nearest resemblance of civilization, Jacob slips back into his old habits. Rock n’ Roll music and brown liquor make the shadows of witchy women come to life leaving Jacob suspecting murderous intentions from his dearest companion. He won’t wait around to be nailed upon the altar by a shard of sharpened black obsidian. On the First Day of Christmas Jacob Vibbich bought a gun.
Dylan Wade Clark’s second novel, The Promise, is a striking leap forward from his debut. His writing has matured noticeably, with emotionally resonant prose and vivid, heart-tugging lines that linger long after reading.
Told through the lens of an unreliable narrator, the story masterfully blurs the line between reality and delusion. You're never quite sure if the protagonist is seeing ghosts—or just battling his inner demons. This ambiguity, paired with a paranormal thread and layered, intertwining storylines, creates a gripping, immersive read.
Clark excels at foreshadowing, hinting at what’s to come without spoiling the payoff. The Promise is unsettling, atmospheric, and beautifully written—a compelling next step from a writer clearly coming into his own.
Clark's second novel, The Promise, takes you on a deep dive into the main character, Jacob Vibbich's psyche. I loved him at times and hated him at others. Clark's writing style has evolved and matured as he takes you on a thrilling rollercoaster ride of what is and what is not plays with the readers imagination and tempts them to continue turning the page to uncover the plane between reality and hallucination. I was completely lost in this book and could not put it down until I reached the last page. A fantastic read for those who enjoy a journey with the supernatural!
