1947. The onset of the Cold War. New players are entering the intelligence game. Old scores are being settled. For rogue British agent MERCURY and the former GI who tracked her down, the chase is on again – and this time everyone is after them.
The conclusion of the CHASING MERCURY trilogy sees Mila and Bradley pursued across Europe and Africa as they struggle to put the past conflict behind them and recover what was lost. But even with their objective in sight, they find their situation is more perilous than ever – and no one is who they seem.
"The Safehaven Complex" opens in 1947, some 12 months after the events of "The Herenhaus Forfeit". Mila and Bradley have gone their separate ways, each following their own destiny. It would spoil the plot to reveal Bradley's latest mission, but it's personal, and he's set to track down his quarry whatever it takes. Mila, having failed to find her son, is recovering from her various misadventures, but hasn't given up hope of finding Pavel.
Following an abrupt end to Mila's R&R, the story quickly builds up pace, as the pair are reunited in a quest for revenge and justice, just as the conflict we know as the Cold War is beginning to develop. Familiar faces reappear, some friendly, some not, as they travel across Europe, then Africa. Following close behind are the Mafia, former Nazis, Russian agents, and agents of what will become the CIA. No one is who they seem, and the pair don't know who to trust - sometimes not even each other. There's a large cast of characters to keep track of!
Fans of the series so far are not going to be disappointed. The relationship between Mila and Bradley continues to grow hotter then colder, then hotter again. There are feelings of guilt and frustration on both sides, yet the pair continue to work as a team, as events slowly grow more and more intense. In the same way he did with Czechoslovakia, Germany, France, the author vividly captures the essence of South Africa in the late 1940s. A key facet of the series is just how well he has blended the plot real-life events - yet again, more than a few times, I had to Google this thing or that thing to place something in context (the sign of a good read, in my opinion).
This is Alastair Maclean, Wilbur Smith, and Len Deighton as they would have been today. A spy thriller that is fast moving, intense, and with complex plotting. The final few chapters are worthy of an epic 1970s VistaVision film. The book can be read as a stand-alone, but really, to squeeze the last drop of drama out of "The Safehaven Complex", you need to have to read the previous books. The book has a satisfying ending, but fingers crossed it's not the last we see of Mila and Bradley.
Gripping from start to finish! The third Chasing Mercury book is packed with twists I never saw coming. As Mila and Bradley search for her son, the tension crackles across continents. A brilliant, high-stakes conclusion to a standout thriller series!
This third and final book in the Chasing Mercury series was an absolute delight to read. More Bradley, more Mila, more cunning twists and derring do, and the sheer quality of the writing… Wow. I take my hat off to the author and am really looking forward now to checking out his soon-to-be released book of short stories. I am no doubt in for another treat. Highly recommended.
