Her Shadow so Dark and Lovely: A Sapphic Fantasy Romance

Rate this book
A cursed scribe. A nightmare Librarian. Giving her heart could cost her everything.

For years I have dedicated myself to the Library, staying hidden and unremarkable. As a lowly scribe, I can escape the weight of my family’s disappointment. My failure to manifest my family’s magical lineage might have destroyed my life in the high court, but in the Library, I can reclaim my own fate. When I find a book on my desk, I don’t think twice before opening it. I should have.

It changes everything. I wake with no voice, no memory, a dark curse mark spreading across my skin and the haunting attention of a Librarian. Entirely captivating, Sila is a high-handed, overbearing nightmare, the sort of creature I should avoid at all costs. But when my past comes for me? She saves my life and takes me into her shadows.

Because I am neither hidden, nor unremarkable. The Library has its own plans for me, the high court another, and Sila? She might be the only thing that can save me.

Her Shadow so Dark and Lovely is a sapphic dark fantasy romance by Elsie Hawthorne featuring a queernormative world, a nightmare love interest, and an unassuming scribe fighting for her life—and heart. Book 1 of the Heart of the Library Duet, and the first book in the series A Curse of Fallen Stars.

4.5 ⭐️ - really enjoyable dark romance. There’s enough going on besides the romance to keep the pages turning wanting to find out what’s going on and what’s going to happen next. Lots of black cat energy and touch her and die vibes which I really enjoy. First book ends with a bit of a cliffhanger. Book 2 comes out in January. I’ll definitely be picking that up when it’s available.

Lorel just wants to do her work, keep her head down, and not draw any attention to herself. After a decade of working as a scribe in the Library, she’s managed to stay under the radar. Unfortunately, all of that goes out the window after she opens a mysterious book she finds on her desk.

Lorel’s ordinary life shatters and some crucial things change. Her voice? Gone. Her memory? Not all there. She’s cursed, and the mark isn’t looking too great. On the bright side or dark side, in this case, Librarian Sila notices her. Now Sila can be a lot…but deep down she’s intimidating and possessive. Even knowing this, Lorel is still charmed by Sila. With the odds against Lorel, can she beat them with Sila by her side?

I was captivated in the beginning and couldn’t put this page-turner down. Lorel’s inner monologue was funny at times and I thought her character was likable. Sila was a great example of a morally grey character. Things were going well, and I was loving it, but then it felt like all of a sudden the pace changed to a quicker one. Overall, it was a good read that fans of fantasy will enjoy, and I still ate this up and left no crumbs. Now to wait for book two…

Holy wow. Not sure what I was expecting after seeing this pop up in one of my reader groups…wasn’t what I got tho that’s for sure.

Great world build with the citadel and the inside of the library. Sila and Lorel are such an interesting pair. Magnificent story reminding us of our self worth and shutting up that voice that tells us we aren’t good enough.

Man I will definitely be struggling til January to pick up where this cliffhanger wanted to drop me.

**Update - author seems hopeful for an early fall release on book 2?! Y’all, don’t sleep on this one.**

Huge thank you to Elsie Hawthorn for including me among your ARC readers! What an absolute delight.
Her Shadow so Dark and Lovely is a beautifully atmospheric novel, rich with imagery and alight with mystery. It is clear how much time and love was put into it; all the pieces intentionally and carefully placed.

Lorel is an extremely likable protagonist, and her contrast with Sila’s character was very well executed – Lorel’s reserved, please-let-me-fly-under-the-radar, to Sila’s bold, possessive, touch-her-and-die. There was so much potential for both characters to be too intense or exaggerated in their roles, but I found the dynamic to be very well balanced.
I loved the side characters as well! They were afforded as much individuality as the MCs and were as necessary and organic as Lorel and Sila, without overcrowding the cast.
Another thing I noted and appreciated was the frequency that the POVs switched. The scattered glimpses into Sila’s perspective were perfectly placed and added the perfect amount of depth to her character that would have been challenging to achieve without them.

The world and the story are so compelling, like being shrouded in a great big morally grey blanket, and I am very excited to see where it goes in the next instalment!

I seem to be on a streak of dark romance/ dark academia. This book starts on a literal chokehold and doesn't let up. Lorel is a scribe who works for the librarians. she's recently been a victim of a cursed book, which has rendered her mute. she's lost the ability to vocalize any sound. Thankfully, those who work in the library communicate via sign language since speaking is frowned upon.

She's caught the attention of the librarian Sila, who knows more than she should. Their kingdom is ruled by light king without giving too much away. The shadows are ever present.Lorel is looking to break the curse that has negated her speech. Each and every turn, someone's trying to kill her and make that silence permanent.

Fair warning: This was a rollercoaster of a ride that does end in a cliffhanger, so you will be anxiously awaiting the sequel just as I am.

Her Shadow So Dark and Lovely by Elsie Hawthorne.

One thing that made me stick to reading the book was the allure of the protective and possessive nature the Librarian has for the Scribe. The “dark romance” could have been darker imo, however, I could see why this was characterised as dark romance. As mentioned above plus the killing-normative of story.

The mystery that kept the story moving was intriguing and enjoyable to decipher. Again, based on my personal taste, it could have been darker. But I accept what was given. It was adequate to whet my appetite for adventure.

My doubts of the story arise from the Scribe character’s seemingly perpetual state of helplessness. I don’t know if book 2 is when she comes out of her shell but currently her feebleness is concerning. I also couldn’t find anything redeeming about the Scribe. Aside from the fact that everyone wants to kill her, there’s not much else? I’m really hoping there’s more revelations in book 2 because she’s walking a tight rope.

On the other hand, the Librarian’s penchant for self sacrifice is also a bit alarming. The point is, I gave the characters the benefit of the doubt because I enjoyed their weird interactions in the beginning.

I am looking forward to book 2 because I have to know if the characters evolve or stay in their archetype.

First: Thank you, Elsie Hawthorne, for allowing me to be apart of your ARC reading community.

Second: How dare you.

I am an extremely critical reader and tend to rip apart books. I literally cannot think of one thing in this book that bothered me. Think Fourth Wing from the scribes side meets Deathbound (Heather Palmer).

My attention was immediately caught, by page 3 I craved to know more about the incident and the world that was built. This book is incredibly well written and will not give you a moment to breathe or find peace. I loved every second.

Most importantly, I finally understand the attraction to a true morally grey character with the whole”who hurt you?” attitude.

My only regret for reading this book is that I have to wait for the second one.

This was a wonderful dark, sapphic fantasy romance with lots of dark academia vibes and a great setting to it as well.

We meet Lorel, who is a scribe in the Library. She’s shy, very reserved and would be very happy in life if she never caught the attention of any Librarian.

Lo and behold, the scariest Librarian of all, Sila, notices her and is immediately enraptured.

I really enjoyed the relationship between them because it felt so urgent and needy and it was everything to me. There’s so many quotes I highlighted of what they say to each other or think about each other in this, simply because the quotes do such a great job of capturing their relationship.

The nickname Sila had for Lorel was so cute!!!!! Their height difference is to die for and it’s so funny picturing them because I think Lorel is like 5’2 and Sila is 6’4 or around there, so it’s like AWWWW. And the way Sila so easily carries Lorel when certain things happen in the novel melts my heart.

While this is a fantasy romance, it’s also dark, meaning there’s lots of death in this. Sila truly is terrifying but it’s in a super hot Librarian badass way. 🔥🔥

I think it was so cool to see sign language depicted in this novel. Because of something that happened before the start of this novel, Lorel is without her voice and she communicates with her hands throughout this novel.

I find it very cool that most people knew sign language in this and were able to understand her very well. There were very few who didn’t understand and who had to have someone translating, but not so many!

The way that the author described the Library and all the different settings in this book was really cool. I felt like you could easily picture it and place yourself there.

I hope to see more Mercias in the next book because he was so funny. There’s also some other characters in this that were questionable on whether I totally hate them or think they’re redeemable, but I won’t say who because I don’t wanna spoil anything.

Anyway, I also hope to see more of them in the next novel.

Also, the ending? CRIMINAL. Should be something the author gets jail time for. When I tell you my heart dropped and then I was like WAIT NO!!!!!!!! It’s genius af the same time because I will definitely be reading the second book and have it on my radar but OWWWWWW.

My brain is overthinking all the possible scenarios for that scene and it keeps going to bad stuff so I have grabby hands to get the second book as quickly as possible. (Take your time though I will still be here!)

If you like sapphic romances that have so much aching and devotion that’s almost like they HAVE to be with each other or they’ll die, or if you just like dark academia books, this one should be on your radar. Out August 1!

Thank you to the author for allowing me to ARC read this!!!! I knew from the first chapter, I was like oh hell yeah I gotta read this early. I’m so glad I did.

HER SHADOW SO DARK AND LOVELY by Elsie Hawthorne

“‘The Heart, playing its games,’ she says. ‘It is a dark and lovely thing, but it is dangerous too.” Like you.

After opening a mysterious book, a scribe loses her voice, her memory, and gains a dark curse – catching the eye of Sila, a powerful and intimidating Librarian. Once hidden from her family’s disappointment, she’s pulled into a dangerous struggle between the Library and the high court, where trusting Sila might be her only hope... and her greatest risk.

It’s been a while since a romantasy novel fully pulled me under like this. Her Shadow So Dark and Lovely is everything I’d hoped it would be and more: haunting, intimate, and so immersive I didn’t realise how quickly pages were flying by.

Elsie’s writing is gorgeously restrained. There’s a quiet kind of balance in fantasy, where saying too much throws away the mystery of it all, but saying too little makes the reader feel as if they’re wading in the dark. Her Shadow lingers, not because it shouts, but because it whispers the right things at the right time. The prose is elegant but never florid, rich with sensory detail – parchment, wet ink, and soft fabrics.

The setting is rich without ever overwhelming the story. I craved to know every nook and cranny of the Library and its Heart, the hallways of the Keep, and the blood shed on the tiles of the Suntide Court. I loved how the cast of characters slowly unfolded, each new glimpse leaving me more eager to hear their perspectives. I was especially intrigued by Librarian Mercias and the mysterious Vika.

Lorel and Sila’s relationship is the heart of the novel. Her Shadow leans more towards a romantasy rather than pure fantasy, and it’s done in the proper way: though the romance takes precedence, the plot and worldbuilding aren’t neglected. Their dynamic is not unlike what readers love – Sila is powerful, possessive, and threatens to kill anyone who dares to harm Lorel. She fits the “touch her and die” trope, but there’s real emotional complexity beneath the surface. Lorel, for her part, is quiet and guarded, but never passive. Her grief, hunger for connection, and fierce resilience thread through every page. Watching their bond grow felt intense in the best way. The tension simmers for just long enough before it pays off beautifully. To be loved is to be known.

I would especially recommend this book to fans of Holy Wrath by Victoria Mier, as they share the sapphic romance story (though no queer guilt in Her Shadow!), a “soft (or is she?) x powerful” dynamic, some political tension, and are both set (at least partially) in a gothic physical place tied to an evil higher power.

Debuts are hard to master – the first book can feel like a mammoth to slay, but Her Shadow So Dark and Lovely delivers. Reader, beware: this book ends in a vile cliff-hanger. Proceed at your own risk. I, for one, will be biding my time until the next instalment arrives.

I cannot begin to express how much I loved this book, but I will, because I must review!

Thank you to Elsie Hawthorne for accepting me as an ARC reader.

First of all, the writing itself was absolutely breathtaking. Beautiful. 10/10. It is exactly the way in which I think a fantasy book should be written!

The main characters, our lovely Sila and Lorel, were fantastic, each in their own way. Sila, in her possessive, horrifically beautiful way, and Lorel, in her timid yet feisty way. Both of them were very well written, fleshed out characters who you just fall in love with over and over again throughout the book.

The storyline? Amazing. Give me fourteen of them RIGHT NOW! I loved how the world was built upon throughout, and all of the different parts of said world were so interesting to read about.

That ENDING?!?! I can’t. I need the next one NOWWW!

Overall, obviously, I ADORED this book, and I can’t wait for the next instalment!

"You cannot condemn me. I have already done that myself." 🖤

Thank you so much for the opportunity to read the ARC of this book. This was an absolute delight to devour. Spoiler free review.

Elsie writes beautifully, and really creates nuanced characters you want to be on the journey with. I loved Lorels perspective, and experiencing the story through her mind and I cannot wait to see the groundwork flourish into the fruits of labour Elsie has planted.

A wonderfully written sapphic romance, with the plot taking the spotlight and the romance being woven in seamlessly. I thought it was very tastefully done, and the world building is phenomenal. I cannot recommend this book enough, and I am dying for book two already. I beg!

Gothic, atmospheric, sapphic and dark academia of sorts - what else could you ask for?

Her Shadow So Dark and Lovely features a unique story of a silenced scribe who survives an array of assassination attempts, and a mysterious librarian who always seems to be just around the corner.

While I found myself reading at a fast pace, I would describe the story more as medium pace with medium/high stakes. The ending leaves you with just enough questions and curiosity to keep you holding until book two.

I enjoyed this debut novel from Elsie Hawthorne! I cannot wait to see what the next instalment brings.

Review Copy – This book was sent to me by the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

finally managed to stop pterodactyl screeching into a pillow so here is my totally calm and coherent review:

*inhales*

five trillion stars. give it an oscar. hang it in the louvre.

this was one of the best things i've read. exquisite. stunning. i loved it so much, i want to absorb it into my soul and inject it into my veins and reread it from every character's pov over and over again until i crumble into dust. i will be buried with this book, and it's sequel, and everything else elsie writes because i am a reader for life now

just absolutely delightful. i am obsessed. i have a new fictional crush (sila). i will defend lorel with my life. i want to consume everything about this world. this sounds insane, but elsie if you did a complete victor hugo and write a billion pages on the citadel sewage system, i would 100% read it. no questions asked.

the atmostphere - 10/10. it's giving dark academia. it's giving greek underworld. it's giving everything you could possibly want - there's questions, there's some answers, there's more questions, there are less helpful answers.

the characters - 10/10. i love everyone. sila and lorel - the only otp i need. when i tell you the tension, the sexual tension - *screams* - oh my god it was perfect. it was everything. i believe in love again. perfection. absolute perfection.

i will tell you now, there is a great big fat cliffhanger at the end. it destroyed me. i'm still recovering. elsie - my therapist will be hearing about this, so just let me know where to send the bill. i'm not kidding - i got to the end and nearly threw my kindle across the room. i don't know what i was expecting BUT IT WASN'T THAT!!!!

in the words of that 21st century philosopher, sharpay evans, this is not what i want, this is not what i planned, and i just gotta say, i do not understand.

so, read this book and become completely unhinged like me. i promise you it's worth it.

and thank you very very much for sending me an arc, elsie, i loved it so much and i really really appreciate it.

First of all thank you so much to Elsie for allowing me to read an ARC of her novel. Despite being sent an ARC, this in no way affects nor influences my review or my honest opinions on the novel.

I finished this novel last night and needed to take the evening before writing my review. MY HEART??? I am so invested in book 2 and the series this duology will be a part of! Sila and Lorel captured my heart the moment I met them, and I am so happy I was able to meet them!
I loved every bit of this novel, and definitely did not want it to end. I was very drawn to the fact that this is a dark fantasy romance that had some level of ‘power dynamic’ and our couple was a sapphic couple. I really enjoyed seeing how Lorel simply wanted to be ordinary, and Sila still found beauty in every aspect of her. This tale is very dark and twisted, there are so many secrets and it is one of my favorite novels I have read thus far.

Sila being so cruel and heartless but finding a softness due to Lorel was such a beautiful thing to read. I love Sila and all her beautifully dark pieces. She is such a complex character and has so much depth. Lorel as well, trying her best to be so ordinary but not realizing how special and valued she truly is. It was a beautiful heart ache the whole way through.

A big tone that stuck out to me was finding yourself and your worth, Lorel struggles a lot with feeling like she matters. Most people around her love and value her, yet she can’t see it within herself and doubts herself and her worth. I love that Sila brings out more of her natural sassiness and fire, and I just love a couple that is truly so obsessed with each other you cannot separate them.

I feel like we have just scratched the surface within the universe and there are so many people who know more than they let on. Especially with that ending! I want to dive into every aspect of this universe! I have so many questions, theories, wanting to know what this person was doing or feeling during this or that event! It really captured my heart and mind. I cannot wait to return to this universe.

𝙒𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙄 𝙍𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙙: Absolutely, I fell in love with Sila and Lorel the second I met them and knew this was one for the dark fantasy sapphic girls.

𝙒𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙄 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙪𝙚 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨: YES! I need book 2!

I, too, want to be a quiet book person who is swept away by a tall scary goth woman

This book was fantastic. There was so much care and thought put into the world building. The layers of it are revealed throughout the book in much the same way that our characters traverse the library -- slowly spiraling down into a world thicker and older than they previously thought. I loved the idea of an ancient library carved into a mountain, its stale and forever-still environment perfect for preserving even the oldest of books. The maps in the opening pages were a delight, and I loved how they emphasized how grandiose everything was.

Lorel works in the library as a scribe, one of the lowest caste in the Citadel. She's quiet and mousy. She keeps her head down and does her job, and has a couple of good friends. One day, someone or something tries to murder her. Miraculously, though, she survives. This draws the attention of one of the highest ranking members in the Citadel, Sila. Sila is a Librarian, and she is as powerful and deadly as she is beautiful. She is fluid nightmare incarnate. And she wants to know who dares to make a murder attempt on her employee.

Lorel and Sila find themselves drawn together to solve this (attempted) murder mystery. And as things grow deadlier and ancient forces begin to slowly creak back to life, Lorel and Sila grow closer. The quiet mouse who is secretly a spitfire, and the walking terror in human form who is secretly a softie begin to fall for each other.

I loved Lorel and Sila's dynamic. I, too, want to be a quiet book person who is swept away by a tall scary goth woman. The way that Elsie Hawthorne writes their blossoming relationship is fantastic. It perfectly scratches that itch of wanting to read a protector/protectee relationship. It was wonderful to see these two characters begin to care for each other so much, and realize just how much they would sacrifice for the other. The mouse and the nightmare, solving mysteries and falling for each other along the way.

Elsie Hawthorne perfectly knows how to write unresolved sexual tension. There is a sex scene, but I don't even mean that. I mean the yearning and the aching that is the build up -- the stolen glances at a collar bone, the soft touches to the small of her back, the thoughts all-consuming of what the other may taste like. Lorel and Sila have plenty of it, and it is fantastic. And Hawthorne displays great skill in curating each want and need specific to each character.

I cannot wait for the sequel. I have so many questions that I need answered. There is so much lore packed into these pages, and so much of this world feels so lived in that I am dying for more. This the kind of book that can absolutely be spun into multiple volumes, past or present, because there is just so, so much imagination here.

Thank you to the author for the ARC.
This is such an intriguing world that we are introduced to, and with compelling characters to follow along with. The Library stands alongside, in opposition? To the Dawn King’s court, an immortal monarch who maintains order in this mountainous cavernous kingdom when people rarely see the sun. The atmosphere is fantastic with our FMC, Lorel, working as a scribe within the Library, overseen by the monstrous human-esque creatures designated as Librarians. There’s some magic infused into the setting, glyphs are used and curses are apparent, but Lorel is the most intriguing by her apparent lack of magic and her current cursed state: she’s unable to make any sound.

It’s a unique point for this book, sign language is integrated into the Library’s culture due to a need to focus on their work, but Lorel’s sister doesn’t sign which is a realistic detail to incorporate, as well as the inclusion of one handed sign and shortened versions.

The plot is a mix of mystery and romance, but skews more towards the romance aspect.

However, it stumbles at the two thirds mark as the relationship moves into confirmed love and the plot gets its legs under it. While I can’t say if the two things are linked (the plot takes a while to get actually moving), I was disappointed by the humanised and softened edges of the Librarians. The callus disregard of human life is missing as the story progresses and I can feel the absence. The Librarians are such a good concept, poised in deliberate opposition to the sanctified guards, I just wish more was done with them.

The plot loses track of itself towards the end as it turns to looking towards the sequel. The big revelation is muted through the unanswered questions it brings up; if heritage is that important then surely others would be aware of Lorel’s, and there’s no mention of a harem or a throng of cousins that would mean she’d be lost in a crowd and that would be Closely tracked both for status and for practical reasons if there’s an immortal king having mortal children. The scandal to obscure her heritage would have also followed her if it’s important enough for her to have hidden it.

I did enjoy reading this book, the set up and overall vibes are just immaculate. There’s been a real care taken with the description of the illuminations and I could feel how badly Lorel wanted to progress in her chosen field, and the systems restricting her from doing so. The interactions between Sila and Lorel are so sweet to read and they make a well-matched pair. Sila’s rapport with Mercias is both a revelation of information (I adored the little snippets of his relationship with Elris) and shows another layer of her character.

I would definitely continue this series, it’s just a lovely read.

🌑 Her Shadow So Dark and Lovely by Elsie Hawthorne

Her Shadow So Dark and Lovely is Elsie Hawthorne’s haunting debut—a journey through a queernormative world where magic, memory, and desire intertwine. The story follows a cursed scribe who loses her voice and memory after opening a mysterious book—only to be drawn into the shadows of a powerful, enigmatic Librarian named Sila.

✨ What I Loved:
-The atmosphere is rich and immersive - candlelit libraries, creeping curses, and gothic vibes that linger like perfume.
-Hawthorne delivers a “fae under the mountain” tale with sharper teeth and deeper soul than any I’ve read—including Sarah J. Maas’s. It’s darker, queerer, and more emotionally resonant.
-The magic system flows with an intuitive elegance. Its logic feels embedded in emotion, memory, and character choices—organic and immersive rather than mechanical.
-The writing is vivid and emotive, each scene simmering with gothic elegance and aching tension.

"The library takes care of its own." That line alone feels like a spell—and sets the tone for a world that is just as sentient and seductive as its inhabitants.
-The romance is smouldering and steamy, with a magnetic push-pull that left me breathless.
-Sila is a standout—seductive, mysterious, and possessive in all the best ways.
-And Lorel? Devastating. Her plea, "Let me please you. Let me have you. Let me give you everything I have. It's yours. Let me be yours." is charged with aching vulnerability and obsession. I’m still not over it.

🩸 Themes & Tone:
-Identity, autonomy, and the cost of power are central.
-Slow-burn intensity meets shadowy obsession—perfect for fans of morally complex characters and seductive danger.

📚 Final Thoughts:

The ending shattered me—in the best way. Hawthorne leaves readers on a cliff’s edge, desperate for more. If you love cursed heroines, possessive love interests, and libraries that bite back, Her Shadow So Dark and Lovely will haunt you in all the right ways.

Book 1 of the Heart of the Library Duet in a Curse of Fallen Stars series.

Dark, immersive and addictive. This fantasy romance pulled me in from the first page. The plot is enthralling and unique, the world rich and well-developed, with clear magical rules that enhance the story rather than complicate it. The descriptions are vivid, making it easy to visualise every action and location.

The story’s focus is on the curse that Loren has unleashed unintentionally. Every chapter is brimming with tension. The romance between Sila and Lorel feels woven naturally, without overshadowing the main plot. Their relationship does feel rather fast-paced, but never forced. There’s a subtle tension between them, and while it doesn’t take up much in the story, it’s there. Sharp and well-written.

Both characters were enjoyable, can’t think of a moment when I disliked either of them. Even when doubts and insecurities crept in, it never felt repetitive or monotonous. Sila has that great “touch her and die” energy - intense and possessive, while Lorel is much quieter. A simple scribe, an outcast, someone who would rather fade into the background than to be noticed. The contrast works out perfectly.

I especially like that Lorel’s arc didn’t fall into that clichéd trope of a powerless girl becoming the most powerful being, out of nowhere, with no explanation or reason. Her growth felt believable, which is really refreshing.

The side characters were also intriguing, but not intrusive. They didn’t steal the spotlight, nor felt like an unnecessary filler.

It’s a great story about trust, and who to believe when everything is falling apart, and when the wrong choice could cost everything. Including your own life and heart. I was fully invested from start to finish. Truly amazing read.

I highly recommend it for fans of dark fantasy, where romance doesn’t take over the whole plot. Solid 4,5 stars. Can’t wait for book two.

I received an ARC of the book. This review is my honest opinion and I’m leaving it voluntarily.

Her Shadow so Dark and Lovely has an intriguing story that is constantly moving through each chapter. The world is mysterious and harsh with the main character, Lorel, just trying her best to be unimpressionable.

There are a few things I have made note on. The relationship between Lorel and her love interest, while having potential, from my point of view does not seem to have much of a solid base to it. This is mainly the case when it comes to Lorel. Perhaps it is only because the two do not have much time to genuinely bond and build on their relationship above "she is so attractive/she is so scary/she saved me/I want to kiss her."

The rest of what I have to say is rather minimal, but the author seems to be scared of long sentences (sorry, Elsie). Long sentences can be just as effective as short ones where appropriate. Sometimes sentences are cut short and separated at the cost of creating incomplete/improper sentences. It is obvious when you get to scenes that the author has put a lot of thought and review into as there are less errors and awkward phrasings. The last thing I have to say is I believe Elsie could benefit from using more description, especially when it comes to a character's emotions. It is a difficult skill but could quickly elevate so much. Make me feel what the characters are feeling!

Overall, the story is a mysterious dark current that just pulls you along relentlessly (in a good way). Such a cruel and in-depth world, with so much yet to explore... I implore everyone to stay tuned for book 2.

This book feels quite tricky for me to rate, because on the one hand it's a slightly gothic dark fantasy with a sentient library. On the other, I didn't feel I had all the information needed early enough to appreciate the plot, and .

What I did love was that it was atmospheric in the way it described people and places. You could feel the shiver of cold air in the corridors, smell the dust and ink of the scriptorium, imagine the sunlight upon the Citadel of old, but not feel bogged down by it.

The plot and romance aspects felt a little disjointed to me, especially regarding events had happened before the book's narration began . I don't feel I got to see the relationship develop to the point it reached. It took a long time for me to understand the Sunrise Court, and by the time I did it felt too late to really appreciate what was going on. Reflecting back on it, I think there's some good fae lore and background story going on, but I couldn't see it at the point it would have helped.

The building of the lore and of the characters' secrets being revealed certainly has potential to make the second book in the duology a twisty sapphic romantasy read. Beware the sudden cliffhanger!

Elsie Hawthorne’s “For Her Shadow So Dark and Lovely” is captivating. The author has crafted a unique universe that’s set mostly in The Library, where Lorel is a mute scribe in the scriptorium section of the Library. Yes, a lowly scribe, but sister to Orielle, a courtier in the Dawn King’s Court. There’s magic almost everywhere in this world except with Lorel. There’s magic in the Library, in the workers, and in the Librarians who oversee and keep everyone in line–one way or another. Librarians have free rein, good or bad, over their charges, and they can be brutal. Lorel is being watched closely by one particular Librarian, Sila. Lorel is afraid of the beautiful, mysterious Sila while also being attracted to her. Then bad things start to happen to Lorel and fellow scribes; Sila becomes Lorel’s rescuer and protector. The action is intense and pieces of their backstories are revealed in layers. Along the way Lorel falls for Sila, the Library makes demands, and the true evil is revealed at last. That revelation is surprising. The fallout is heart wrenching. The ending is like falling off a very tall mountain. But this is Book 1 of the Heart of the Library Duet in a Curse of Fallen Stars series. In other words, there’s hope. I can’t wait for Book 2!

If I could, I would give this book 6 stars!! and I’ve only got three words for you - Shadow Mummy Season!!

First of all, have to say thank you to Elsie for the ARC! Reading this truly made my year!!

To anyone who loves romantasy, sapphic reads, yearning, and shadows, this book is the one for you! In our usual romantasies, they are queernormative worlds but NEVER the two main characters. This? is exactly what you are wishing and looking for.

Sila - the Librarian, has my whole heart. She is truly the Shadow Mummy of the season, move over Shadow Daddies. There’s a new queen in town. I loved seeing her throughout the book and her reasoning for what she is trying to achieve.

Lorel - the scribe, I can relate to on the highest degree. Mostly with the memory loss… but also on a personal level! Her development through every chapter is just stunning to read on the page, and by the end of the book, you feel for these two women.

I will never forgive you for the cliffhanger you left me on!! But rest assured when Book 2 comes out, I will be reading and raving about it. Thank you again Elsie, for your writing, your story, and the love that you have put into this book. Thank you for writing the sapphic story we all need in these times. You’ve truly made all us girl lovers feel seen. <3

I want to thank Elsie Hawthorne for allowing me to be an ARC reader for this, it was such an honor.

This book is so deliciously dark, atmospheric, and built such a wonderful and unique world that draws you in from the beginning straight through to an ending that makes you hunger for the second part of this duology.  I both couldn't read this fast enough and wanted to slow down to savor every exquisite page of this.

The way that the story unravels and slowly the layers of secrets become know and memories return is so well written.  Very organically drawn out and twists that are most definitely not seen coming made this such a delight to read, and even knowing what is coming, I will likely read it again very soon just to see how my experience of the story changes.

The very complex, beyond forbidden relationship between Lorel and Sila was one that added so much depth and intrigue.  Especially when you learn early on the very fraught tension that exists between librarians and scribes.

And, finally, with as much love as I can muster...  after that last line in the book, I swore out loud.  I should have seen something coming, but the fact that I am now forced to wait...

I received an ARC of Her Shadow So Dark and Lovely and I’m genuinely still screaming. I’ve been dying for more sapphic fantasy like this and this one fully delivered. I was hooked from the first chapter and could not stop reading. I mean… cursed books? Quiet girls with secrets? Scary, possessive librarian women? It’s like this book was written for me personally.

Lorel is a silent scribe who’s had her voice stolen by a cursed book, and Sila is the powerful, unreadable Librarian who becomes completely fixated on her. Their dynamic had me feral. Classic wlw yearning. I was clinging to every scene they had together.

This is one of those books where the atmosphere completely takes over. It’s dark, dreamy, and a little bit creepy in the best way. The Library felt like its own character and I never wanted to leave.

Also, the ending?? RUDE. I’m going to need the sequel immediately or I might combust.

If you’re into dark, sapphic romance with a haunted, magic-soaked backdrop, this is it. I loved every second and I’m already planning a reread. Absolutely one of my favourite reads this year.

What a beautiful, fantastic dark story.

I haven’t had a book grab me from the beginning, like this story did, in a long time. Once I started it, I couldn’t put it down.

I loved so much about this. How unapologetically dark Sila is, to the way Sila and Lorel’s feelings developed, to the detail of fighting and the way their magic was used.

I loved the possessiveness Sila has over Lorel. It is sweet and endearing and not done in a creepy way. She’s so ruthless and strong and devoted. I loved seeing her open up and realize what she was feeling.

Lorel. Poor sweet naive Lorel. I cannot wait to see her magic and powers develop in the next book. She’s quiet (no pun intended) but fierce when she needs to be or is pushed into a corner. Or ya know, if Sila is threatened. It’s great to see her realize she’s drawn to Sila and she accepts her attraction toward her. It killed me (in the best way) when she gives herself over.

I love the way she described the magic during fights; which were well written and exciting.

Elsie’s writing is romantic, exciting, and simple in the best way possible. I can’t wait for book two!

This book had me convinced it was heading in one direction and then completely turned the tables on me. That unexpected shift in the story had me hooked; I couldn't put my phone down. The plot is gripping, and the pull between Lorel and Sila is impossible to resist. Their connection is so well written, I found myself completely invested in them.

The writing is absolutely beautiful. The prose flows effortlessly, and the imagery is so rich and vivid that I felt like I was right there in the story. Every twist, every moment of tension, pulled me in deeper. And that ending? I was literally screaming at my phone in the best way. It left me desperate for more while still feeling satisfied with the journey I’d just taken.

Her Shadow So Dark and Lovely has officially earned a place among my favorite reads. I can't wait to own a physical copy and see this stunning story on my shelf. Thank you so much, Elsie Hawthorn, for the opportunity to read this ARC and experience something so unforgettable. I’m counting down the days until book two!

Her Shadow so Dark and Lovely by Elsie Hawthorne is the first book of a duet, A Curse Of Fallen Stars. It follows Lorel, a mere scribe of the Library, as she tries to remember the circumstances of her curse. Along the way she attracts the attention of the Librarian Sila, who seems more than pleased to cross paths with Lorel, more than they had originally anticipated.

I simply adore this book, I have no idea where to even begin! The world feels alive, the Library beams with its dark secrets and the charismatic characters lighting it up. Lorel is a wonderful protagonist! Her personality fits the tone of the book and shines through in the narrative. Same with Sila's chapters, you can gain so much about them just by the way they narrate the events they take part in, understand their thought process and see their perspective as you get tangled up into the shadows of their world. They hold their grip on to you, the cliffhanger ending keeping you wish for a longer stay in this magical world.

"The memory of the Librarian’s fingers pressing into my shoulders makes my heart race. Fear, probably. Definitely fear."

ARC Review
5/5⭐️

"What I want is for you to devour me. Consume me. Show me that I am yours. Ruin me for any other, because there never will be. I am yours."

This is a sapphic dark fantasy romance that features an obsessed cursed scribe and a nightmare librarian and has more than a few secrets.

From reading the blurb I knew this was going to be a book that I loved, and I was not disappointed.

This is book 1 of the Heart of the Library Duet in a Curse of Fallen Stars series. And I enjoyed every moment of this read. It kept me hooked from the very beginning, and I couldn’t put it down.

I enjoyed both characters and found them to be unique. I fell in love with both Sila and Lorel.

I can say I have never read a book like this and it is one of a kind. I thought the writing style was excellent and that it was the perfect tone for this book and made everything flow nicely.

But that ending?! How dare the author do that to me. I can’t wait to see what comes next in book 2.

Thank you Elsie Hawthorne for sending me this book for an honest review ❤️
