Late in his life, the Seventh Doctor has reunited with an old friend. Someone to help him fix the problems of the universe - if he can avoid repeating mistakes of the past. Ray is capable, clever and seems the perfect foil for the Doctor - but she will still be put to the test.

The Executor by Chris Chapman (2 parts) - In a muddy field stands an old stone dovecot. Only it’s a TARDIS - with a recently deceased owner. The Doctor is named Executor of the Last Will and Testament of an old friend - Pegroninagall, 'Peg'. He has a monumental task: clearing her TARDIS of keepsakes and mementos. But this Ship may also contain whatever killed Peg.

Oil and Waterby James McDermott (2 parts) - Visiting the Norfolk coast, the Doctor and Ray discover something very wrong with Blakeney's seals: they're bloated, mutated, and killing people! With grieving boater Anne, they investigate the cause... Is there something in the water? What does it want with the sea life? And what are its plans for humanity?

Much Ado About Racing by Fio Tretheway (2 parts) - When the TARDIS arrives at the start of the Intergalactic Championship Rally, the Doctor and Ray are caught between two rival racers. And for Ray, long-buried feelings resurface. Something is at work here: something feeding on heartache and regret. And love among the race-crafts isn’t all that’s at stake.

Fun set of stories with Ray becoming a solid companion. There's some wonderful monologue of the 7th Doctor with each story focusing on a certain theme. I found the overlying arc to be both The Doctor and Ray finding themselves, The Doctor wanting to try and steer away from the manipulator and Ray trying to find what she believes to be her purpose in life.

They work well together and am looking forward to more!

Yet another example of how Big Finish has not learned from the mistakes of the TV show. Not interested in a story about an angry middle-aged lesbian raging at sea creatures. Or about middle-aged lesbians who need the Doctor to play matchmaker. The final episode in this set feels like bad fanfic written for the Gatwa era and then adapted for Seven.

Just another release where BF invites you to go touch grass. And there have been too many.

Following an appearance in the "The Krillitane Relic", Ray from "Delta And The Bannermen" finally returned and made her proper debut as a companion in last year's "Past Forward" box set. Now, we get to see more of her adventures with the Doctor.

Seven and Ray make for an amazing duo. While Seven is a relatively dark and grim Doctor at this point in his life, Ray is a more hopeful and caring person, so they sit at opposite ends of the hero dynamic, compared to Ace who was often on a similar wavelength to Seven.

While Ace will always be THE companion for Seven, Ray is a breath of fresh air for this era, after 30-odd years of comics, books and audios having exhausted more or less all of Ace's potential, so it was time for something new for McCoy.

"The Executor":

An interesting question: What happens to a Time Lord's estate when they die? It's not something you really think about, but once you consider it and hear how it plays out, it makes for a fun story. Peg's TARDIS is expansive and this script helps us get to re-know Ray better.

This story falls a bit short on its villains. They aren’t properly described until Part 2, so by then whatever image you’ve built up of them is shattered. The first part built them up as potentially being a returning villain we would know, but then the Doctor name drops them after a big crescendo and it's a bit like... Who, sorry?

"Oil And Water":

Eh, not too keen on this one. Not really much going on, and what little there is happening is basically a redux of the same preachy message done in "Praxeus" and a hundred times before and after that episode. Yes, ocean pollution is bad, yes, humans are destroying the planet, but there are thousands of other social issues we could be bringing attention to rather than the exact same one.

"Much Ado About Racing":

I honestly liked the subject matter of this one, and the story hit a pretty raw and recent nerve for me. It's all about love and the one thing stronger than it: Heartbreak. The mysterious booming voice directing Ray had some truly great, memorable dialogue and this story brought something interesting to light about the aforementioned companion which I feel will make her relatable to many listeners, myself included.

On the downside, the race was pretty hard to follow, which sucks given that it is pretty crucial to the second part of the story. Don't know what the vehicles looked like, what the racing circuit looked like, when/whether they were airbourne or ground-based and so on.

It is also really nice to see Annie Wallace doing more roles after leaving Hollyoaks, and long may it continue for her!

Overall:

An okay boxset. Not as strong as last year's offerings for the 7DAs, but easily better than "The Last Day".
