Amazing, I can't believe I've enjoyed all four of these books in this series. Ms. James has a way of writing that holds your attention, and when you finish one book you can't wait to read the next book in the series. Fortunately, I found these four books this week-end and didn't have to wait a month or two for the next book in the series. However, I will have to wait until December 2014 for the next book in the series..."Rose," Book 5, and "Emmy-Lou" Book 6, January 2015.
This book is a part of my Nook library and I enjoyed it enough to also award it 5 "Kate" stars.
Kate is the fourth book in the Come-by-Change Mail Order Brides series, and it is probably my favorite in the series so far. If you have not read the first three: Ruby, Emily, and Violet, respectively, I do suggest you read these in order prior to starting Kate. While all the books can stand alone, the characters are the same, and the books are best read in order. Also, one of my favorite things about Kate is that it connects strongly back to Ruby. I am hoping that future books in the series will have some of these connections, as well. While all of the mail order brides end up in the same place (Come-by-Chance) and get to know each other and become good friends, Ruby and Kate have an older connection. I liked the addition of that to the plot. Also, Kate is an older bride, so the story line in this book is a bit different from the first few. I had been worried, as I continued reading the series, that the formula would be the same over and over and that I'd grow bored. It hasn't happened yet. I am going to take a break from the series for a while, but I do plan to get back into it after I've read some other books on my long list of books to read.
Ahhh, much better. This installation in the Come By Chance Mail Order Brides series is back to what I've come to enjoy about Juliet James' writing.
This statement, made by the eponymous character, is just about what you'd know and love from any free-spirited woman: "I know what I don't want, to start with. What I don't want is to stand in line and behave all my life. I'd rather be wild and free, and feel like a woman, and know horses, and be friends with dogs, and sleep under stars if I choose to. And cook bacon and eggs over an outdoor fire." That statement encapsulates how well Kate is written, and this character was immediately endearing to me.
Also enjoyable was the clever way the author turns a phrase so that you can understand exactly what she means, such as "a dog who was long in the body and short in the leg," calling up visions of dopey basset hounds with sad eyes and sweet dispositions.
Lastly, there are little nuggets of golden phrase that make you remember why you started this series in the first place, "If Lettie knew one thing about second-hand reporting, it was that the facts of the matter are usually the first casualty..." Clever.
I loved this book. Kate was a feisty woman who found a man who perfectly matched her personality. I loved both of their characters! The rest of the book interweaves in its own way with the story of the town and its main characters.
I've come to think of the books as chapters in a story. Each one talks about the people we have come to know and like/dislike and tells the story of a new person as well. By the end of the story we have caught up with all the people and are ready to meet someone new. They just happen to be in another book instead of another chapter.
I love this town and the wonderful sense of joy and community that resides there. The love stories are so romantic and the caring and support is amazing. No one is perfect and each person in the community is loved for being who they are. I would love to live there, but with electricity and running water. Lol. Seriously, a very enjoyable series.
This is the 4th book in the series. Kate is the friend who helped Ruby escape from Pittsburgh. Nice to see a book with older characters as the main love interest. Easy to read in a couple of hours. Some really funny moments.
This one made 5 stars because it features an older couple. I love love love when older couples have a second or third or fourth or (well you get the point) chance at romance and love.
These stories have gotten a lot better. After the first book, I was so done with the series. But since I own books 1-8, I decide to at least read the first 4. Glad I did. This story is about Postmistress Kate. Remember her? She becomes a mail-order bride. Horace Black is who she has been writing to. She meets Wally on the ride from Billings to the town of Come By Chance. Who will she marry? This story held my interest all the way through.
The love story of Kate and Wally. Kate was the post mister of Pittsburgh and she help Ruby rescue Mr. Murray. Now he want revenge on Kate. He had her fire from her job. So she decide to become a mail ordered bride and head out to Come By Chance, Montana. She is to marry Horace Black. He is not a very nice man. Can Wally save her? Great story.
Western romance. If you're sensitive to human trafficking, be warned. Very light description of sexual events, but mainly stayed clean. I loved the characters, and thought the bad guy would have behaved and responded more violently, it was still a good story. I read the first 4 in the series, and look forward to reading the rest.
The characters are likeable and funny leading readers on a true adventure. It's romantic yet interesting to follow each character's journey to the altar. I enjoyed it and look forward to the next one.
In Montana even older widows get a chance of finding romance and love.
It was nice to see Kate return to the series. I like it when older ladies get a chance at love. It's encouraging to see that all brides don't have to be young innocents. I enjoyed this book. It was a quick read.
This is a fun series to read. I finished learning about Kate and realised how much I enjoy feeling part of the families in Come by Chance. These are real people who live in a tiny town outside of Billlings, Montana in the late 1800s. Starting with the Wilkinson brothers, you learn about different kinds of people. Where they came from and how they live. I'm feeling that the stories mirror real life, with good and bad people and everyone learning how to get along with each other. There's nothing namby pamby about them. They fight and cuss and attend church and look out for each other. Thank you for making it a series, kind of like how the world works.
