Humanity has spent years surveying the depths of space, searching for another planet like Earth.

In Cahros, they might have found one.

Among the first wave of specialists deployed to the planet is Tarlo, a young and optimistic biologist who has spent his life dreaming of adventure among the stars. For all his excitement, he feels a little out of his depth – everyone around him seems so much smarter, stronger, and better equipped to deal with whatever challenges may lie ahead.
The team finally sets down on Cahros, but is surprised to learn that the planet is home only to a barren, lifeless desert. All is quiet.

That is, until night falls.

A nightmarish series of events leave Tarlo and the remaining colonists struggling to survive in a world that is so much more than a benign sea of orange. Here on Cahros, nothing is as it seems, and deep within these endless deserts lie untold, deadly secrets.

There’s something out there… in the sands…

Firstly I want to thank the author for giving me the opportunity for my first ever ARC read. Now to the book! Which will be available 25.09.2025

This is an incredible read that has left me with so many emotions, theories and absolute wonder for the next book. I haven't read a lot of sci-fi however this had me staying up all night to read from chapter one the way the world building, description, mystery, character interactions and plot all come together so harmonically in such a perfect way without trying hard.

The cliffhangers that happen at the end of chapters that leave you wanting to read more and figure out the mysteries of this planet are so delicately done where it doesn't feel forced or like it's a ploy to make the book interesting. They are just purely part of the story. (And trust me I'm normally not a fan of cliffhangers)

For the first time in history a book nearly made me cry and I was an emotional wreck at 3am this morning and all I can say is I will never forget that glove 😭

The love and care that has been put into this book you can feel and it has everything in it that I've been lacking from mainstream books. Whatever magic that's been put into it I need more of and you can bet I will be buying the physical copy and any kind of merch that follows. I will also just be emotionally wrecked and sitting here with that ending in my brain till the next book is released.

There are also some short stories on his website which are amazing that you should also check out here ----> https://jsh-writes.squarespace.com/sh...

Thank you to the author, who sent me an ARC. What stands out for me in this inventive, intense story is the worldbuilding. Harman puts you right there with his well-rounded characters. You're on a little-known planet, racing against time, running for your life, and doing all you can to avoid those fatal ... things. (No spoilers here!) This book is a testament to Harmon's vast imagination. He's definitely an author to watch.

I received the ARC of this book and let me start by saying WOW. From the beginning, I quickly fell in love with the empathetic and hopeful Tarlo. His observations about his world and his fellow colonists throughout the novel were so heartfelt and authentic.

When the excrement hit the fan as the sun set, I was glued to the page. Gripping in its relentless onslaught of problem after problem for the ill-equipped yet plucky colonists, it was clear from very early that they were so out of their depth, and I was dragged screeching along for the ride as they unravelled horrifying truth after horrifying truth about this strange and deadly sand-covered planet. While absolutely hammering you with the strange and terrifying reality these poor colonists deal with, J.S. Harman also manages to keep you grounded and hopeful through the tenacity and resilience of his characters.

For fans of movies like Pitch Black and also books like It and Leviathan Wakes, you’ll enjoy this one!

Because there’s something out there… in the sands…

Dark Sands was my first ARC read, and I’m so honored I got to experience something this unsettling, emotional, and unique. It’s a slow-burn sci-fi horror told through multiple POVs, grounded in realism with a strong scientific tone that makes every discovery—and every death—feel horrifyingly plausible.

At the heart of it is Tarlo, a biologist and the main POV, whose quiet, gentle nature made the unraveling of this world hit even harder. His resilience isn’t loud, but it’s deeply human—and by the end, his journey felt both heroic and tragic.

The atmosphere is brilliantly crafted: vast silence, creeping dread, and that constant sense that something just beyond your understanding is watching. Chapter 25 broke me—there’s one moment of quiet loss that I’ll remember long after finishing.

That said, some of the final chapters leaned a bit too abstract for me. I found myself emotionally engaged but unsure what was literally happening at times, which slightly pulled me out of the moment.

Still, this story stayed with me. It’s eerie, emotional, and refreshingly different—one I’ll be thinking about for a while.

I picked this one up on a whim and couldn't believe it!

The world building and character development is some of the best out there! Every piece of technology is explained thoroughly but not so much that it just beats you over the head with science. I felt like I was in the world of Cahros and knew how to walk around (although maybe not survive).

The characters in this story, though, are my favorite part. Everyone has a distinct personality and a relatable story, but it doesn't feel contrived. And their personalities and stories grow and express themselves so beautifully.

Go pick this one up if you love sci-fi or human stories. It's as much about finding yourself than finding a new planet.

10/10 Can't wait for Dark Tides!

✨ARC✨

I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC of Dark Sands in exchange for an honest review.

This debut novel was wonderfully crafted. The world was detailed and well thought out with time well spent on the scientific exploration and dynamics of investigating a brand new world expertly thought out and portrayed in beautiful detail.

As someone who doesn’t routinely read SciFi this book remained accessible and entertaining. Character development of our MMC was gradual and profound. The reader was learning alongside everyone else which made the steady reveals in this novel exciting, driving the plot forward.

A spectacular debut ✨

Such an incredible book, J.S.Harman’s spectacular world-building and constant cliffhangers leave you on the edge of your seat and wanting more. An epic story of adventure, discovery and things not always being as they seem. Definitely a must-read for anyone who loves sci-fi/adventure or those wanting to try something new, Harman does well to make it accessible for anyone, from those brand new to the genre to sci-fi enthusiasts, there’s a little something for everyone in Dark Sands.

A great, imaginative, ambitious debut from an author with a lot of heart!

Firstly, thank you so much to the author, J.S. Harman, for gifting me an ARC of Dark Sands! This hasn't influenced my review of the book, and my thoughts are my own.

I'm a big, big fan of sci-fi and horror, and absolutely adore the two mashed together. If I were to sum up what kind of books hook me and make me feral, it would be the likes of Annihilation, Paradise-1, and The Luminous Dead. I am very happy to report that Dark Sands (DS) is in the same vein as these. Yay!

We mostly follow the POV of Tarlo, an introverted scientist who suffers from imposter syndrome, questioning his place among this crew of elites on a mission to explore and terraform a new world, Cahros. Alongside him are a wide variety of personalities ranging from the cold yet caring doctor, the brusque yet gentle veteran, and the extroverted intrepid explorer... and also whatever lurks out there in the sand...

The story takes a little while to get going (at approx. 28% of the way though, according to my Kindle), but that's not a complaint, just an observation. Once the drama kicks off though, it doesn't let up at all. We're thrown straight into the tension and the "what the fuck" of the story following a good bit of foundation-laying, following the characters closely as all hell breaks loose. By 50% of the way through, the "thing in the sand" is revealed, and readers may sit back and think, "oh, is that it? The mystery is over?" But I'm happy to report that no, not at all; the mystery is just gearing up.

As an uber-fan of Annihilation it was impossible for me not to draw similarities between the cave that is discovered near beginning of the exploration of DS, and the Tower. Think of that insatiable pull the Tower has over the biologist, that soul-pulling need to go into it and see, even at the expense of one's sanity, and that's the kind of vibe that the cave has in DS. I know. I was fucking over the moon to discover that aspect was riding hard in this book.
(However, I do need to note that I know Harman's not read Annihilation before, so we have no copying of ideas here, just a happy (for me) coincidence!)

The atmosphere throughout is one of uncertainty and tension, with tempers fraying and actions doubted. People act and react in ways consistent with how I would expect them to, given their situation; while sometimes actions may not make immediate sense or seem overdone at first glance, taken under the scope of panic, trauma, and sleep deprivation, they fit perfectly. Ouch. Also, there's a scene later on in the book where certain events are uncovered via the means of journal entries, a touch which I loved; nothing beats that moment when a recovered journal entry makes your heart fall through the bottom of your stomach.

The standout characters were Tarlo and Ashelyn. I found Tarlo to be really rather adorable, and Ashelyn really human. I personally don't need romance to further my enjoyment of a book, but given how naturally their relationship grew in DS, I'd be happy to see them come together in book 2. Most of the time when a book is marketed as containing a slow-burn romance it actually puts me off, but Harman handled their growing friendship really, really well.
Terrus gets an honorable mention too; what a legend. And like, if Tarlo ends up with him instead of Ashelyn, I'm also all for that. Just putting it out there.

Harman has clearly put his heart and soul into crafting this book, and I am genuinely looking forward to the sequel, Dark Tides, that's slated for release next year. This is a really good setup novel that's paved the way for what I anticipate to be a big payoff!

Space is scary. And I’m not just talking about supernovas, black holes and asteroids! With somewhere so vast, stretching far beyond our own solar system, who knows what could be lurking out there.

The true horror at the heart of Dark Sands is an underlying fear. The fear of the dark, the fear of the unknown, the fear of dying alone. Over 400 years ago, the first colonists who boarded the boat to take them across the Atlantic faced all those fears. Not knowing what would be awaiting them in the new world, and what secrets were hidden out there to be discovered. All those feelings of excitement and trepidation were prevalent in equal measure as the crew of the Nitimini crossed the galaxy to their new home of Cahros. The references to those early American colonists brought more to mind than the mere possibilities ahead but also the dangers. The dread this book dredged up from the first chapter did not dissipate for the duration. It was a relentless ride that kept me up at night, having to read just one more chapter. I needed to know what would happen next, I needed to know if they’d survive as the battery levels dropped, the storm approached and their time ran out.

‘Dark Sands’ is a simple story on a grand scale that plays out like the sci-fi films I grew up watching from the 80s. The kind of movies that took a cast of likable characters, placed them in an isolated setting, and put them through hell to see how they’d react. Fright or flight, fall apart or face their fears. And while some of their antics and actions were somewhat questionable, it was still entertaining just like in those old movies I love so much. The story isn’t without its flaws, but any minor problems with plotting or pace were far outweighed by the talent, promise and passion of its writer, J.S. Harman, which was prevalent on every page.

There’s something out there in the sands… and it’s bloody fantastic.

What a gripping and terrific sci-fi horror debut novel! The writing is so fantastic, I actually was able to add some new words to my vocabulary! And the storyline is very interesting and unique. I was so scared for the characters the entire time. The horror scenes are done and explained so well. You wouldn’t feel like you’re lost because the author does a very good job of explaining all the science to you in a simple language. There are characters you’ll root for and characters you’ll simply want to die. But the twist, you won’t guess what’s coming in the end!

Tarlo, a biologist is chosen in a space voyage to go to a new planet Cahros to test and understand if the planet is livable by humans because earth is currently growing inhabitable. They land on the new planet which is a cold lifeless barren desert land. But as the night falls which is nine days long, things start to change. As if the sands are alive. And then disaster hits. They don’t know what hit them and it’s impossible to find out without getting killed first! Nothing is as it seemed when they first landed on the planet and may be, just may be tarlo is the only person who could save everyone from the horrors that have unleashed.

Even while writing the review I have goosebumps! I’m so excited for the second book! I’m going to jump straight in as soon as I get my hands on it because this girl needs answers!!!

Dark Sands by JS Harman came at the right time for me. I'd been in the mood for an off-world, horror adventure and JS Harman delivered.

At it's core, Dark Sands is familiar. A group of people venture into space in search of a new Earth where they can experiment, document and eventually live. Queue a rapid series of events happen on an isolated planet. Chaos ensues.

Deeper, this is a novel of finding yourself amongst others and what it means to be alive. This is a novel whose worldbuilding is strong. It trickles through the sand at you and eats you alive. Its lore is scattered throughout and I can tell that Harman spent a lot of time on this. It is a novel filled with different characters with different perspectives. It was eerie, intense and atmospheric whilst also being gentle and caring.

Amongst the parts where the pacing was off or it got a tad too difficult to follow, there is massive potential here. This novel is a strong debut for JS Harman and one that sci-fi go-ers are going to love.

Then the sandstorm was upon them, and their world was consumed by the merciless dark.

When I first read the blurb for Dark Sands, I knew I had to read it. I love a great sci-fi horror story and it did not disappoint.

We follow a group of people that go searching for a new habitable planet and once they get there... shit gets crazy. It’s a great setup, but where J. S. Harman truly shines is the palpable sense of dread and tension he creates. That along with the excellent pacing made me blaze through it in one sitting. If I have a critique, it’s that I wanted to connect to the characters a little more, but everything else made up for it in the end.

If you love the movie adaptation of Michael Crichton’s Sphere, this is going to be right up your alley. Dark Sands is an awesome debut from Harman and I can’t wait for Dark Tides.

I am so honored to have been selected as an ARC reader for this novel! Let me start off with one statement, wow, just wow.
The author (J.S. Harman) is incredibly intelligent and talented and uses his words to create an impressive story with detailed and engaging imagery. I felt like I could see this book like a movie. I was very interested in the premise and the initial simplicity of it, and stayed intrigued as it turned into more complex and intense.
Although the beginning did overwhelm me a little with the amount of names mentioned, the important characters showed themselves with more unique traits and dialogue. It’s very sci-fi! If you love sci-fi and intricate stories and plots with a deep unsettling undertones, you should love Dark Sands! I will strongly recommend this book to other readers :)

Wow. This book had me holding my breath in so many places.

Jesse has such a way with his words and world building that the alien landscape somehow becomes real, you are with these people trying to terraform an arid and inhospitable planet, (that holds a deadly secret). The language and tech are presented in a way that is easy to follow and Jesse's concepts feel fresh and kept me guessing on what would (and possibly could) happen next.

We follow a group of people (scientists, builders, doctors and guards) as they leave a slowly eroding earth for a new planet far away with the intent to terraform and see if humans can make a new life elsewhere. What they find when they land is a world bathed in searing daylight, air they can't breathe and nothing but a flat red landscape to the horizon. But they make the most of it and although a few little odd things occur, a party is sent out to explore further while the rest stay and build their compound.

Then night time finally comes and with it something deadly that will change everything.

What follows is an action-packed and frightening ordeal as everyone realises that the fight for survival is no longer about earth, but about the people around them.

This is not your ordinary story with a clear enemy, there are many factors that come into play with surprising twists and turns and an ending that leaves your jaw on the floor.

I do think what resonated the most for me was that the MMC, Tarlo was relatively normal, someone with a degree who gets the job of a lifetime and then suffers imposter syndrome - it's true to life and satisfying to read as he overcomes obstacles to find his place amongst the stars.

If you love

- sci-fi horror

- intense world-building

- who is the real enemy

- twists and turns

- betrayals

- fast-paced

- action adventure

- creepy vibes

- multiple POV

Then add this to the tbr now!

Tarlo, a citizen of the too-slowly recovering wasteland that is 23rd-century Earth, is embarking on the adventure of a lifetime—after rigorous training and years working in the Gobi desert as a biologist, he is chosen for an expedition to terraform a new world: a barren, flat, sandy planet named "Cahros."

His colleagues feel dubious at best about their new assignment. One has seen enough deadly space missions to know it's impossible for zero casualties. Another knows their chances of making the planet inhabitable, let alone find life, is almost scientifically impossible. Still, Tarlo cannot shake the thrill of being among the first to set foot in a world uncharted by man—his curiosity far outweighs the little voice in the back of his mind warning him of danger.

The first day (10 Earthan days) passes uneventfully. The initial phases of establishing two bases, taking and analyzing samples of the seemingly endless expanse of sand, and getting used to the colonists' new home are overwhelmingly successful. A celebration—which they aptly name "Sunfall" after the first sunset and beginning of 10 Earthan days of darkness—names the base "Catal" and sends off the first scientific expedition to explore strange rock formations.

Not even an hour passes before the bodies start to drop...

And life is discovered in the sand.

The worldbuilding is flawless. You're informed, but never bogged down with data dumps. On top of that, @j.s.harman.author so skillfully weaves together emotional tension that tugs on the heartstrings and bone-chilling horror. As someone who typically isn't into space sci-fi, I highly recommend to anyone regardless of genre preferences—a good story is a good story, and this is a damn good one. I can't wait for "Dark Tides"!

5 stars - An original sci-fi gem with a killer location

This book was one of my most anticipated sci-fi releases this fall. And it definitely delivered! It was an original, entertaining read with a gloomy desert stealing the show.

The promise of mystery really drew me in:
• New planet. Check.
• Scientists stuck on this planet. Double check.
• Something out there, but what?!! Triple check.

Vibes:
I really enjoyed the setting, and how the author pulls you into that world. Who doesn’t want to spend time on a spooky Dune like planet? I was right there with those scientists; panicking and full of questions. Perfect book if you want to lock yourself up while reading. I actually read this book on a beach. Let’s just say, the ambience added...

Concept:
I think what I loved most was the original concept of Dark Sands itself. Once the mystery started, I could definitely keep reading with a page turning pull towards the end. It was very visual. I could see the film. (Please do make the film!) It had many surprising moments. I mean, how creative can you be with a location like that? Well, you can! Usually I’m a slow reader, but I didn’t want to put this book down.

Tone/MC:
What I also liked is how the author weaved in moments of comic relief to give your nervous system a break. I prefer suspense that leans more on the mystery side than horror anyway. The situation is weird enough to enjoy watching these characters struggle to survive. The MC (Tarlo, a young biologist) is very insecure, and this reflects in his fear to put himself out there. But I enjoyed the other POV (Sergeant Terrus) too. He’s left in charge to keep everyone safe. Well, good luck with that há! You can definitely read this story if you want to be entertained and still be able to sleep tonight.

Comps/genre:
Allover I was impressed with this book. Surprised with how much I like this subgenre (sci-fi with mystery/suspense/horror). I only know this subgenre from space films like Alien or Event Horizon. For the conceptual side of the book, you can even compare it to mindbending experiences like Annihilation, or deep-sea horror like The Abyss. I was genuinely entertained. Can’t wait to read more in this genre!

Audience:
This book is currently marketed as sci-fi accessible. I agree that 85% of the book was easy to read for a non-tech reader like me… Mind you: after the mystery starts! During the introduction you may have to be a little patient. But it really holds back on sci-fi explanations in the rest of the book, which is the best part anyway! By then it reads like a page turner, so it’s safe to give it a go if you’re new to the genre. Age wise, it’s suited for adults, but I’m sure brave YA/NA readers can give it a go too.

Topics/language:
The material was well treated, with subtle thematic layers and diversity representation. I appreciate how that made the universal space crew more real. Every now and then the word choice was a bit on the purple prose side. But it suits the weird situation, the MC, and the strange world they’re stuck in. Bonus mention is that the formatting of this book (e-version) was really well carefully taken care of.

Final score: Give me book 2!

Disclaimer: This book was sent to me as an arc-copy to honestly review, but I was genuinely looking forward to this book and can recommend it to sci-fi/suspense readers looking for something original.

Normally as rule, I don’t read ARC’s. I’m a slow reader, and a mood reader at that! There is a certain obligation that comes with ARC reading that gives me anxiety from perceived pressure to review only in the affirmative. But I had nothing to worry about with this one that’s for sure!!

It’s a cosmic survival story. It’s sci-fi horror done to perfection. Great world building, and really likeable characters. I loved the little cliffhangers at the end of chapters, which really made it difficult to put down at night to sleep!! And the ending… chefs kiss 🤌

Dark Sands ticked all the boxes for me. I would definitely recommend this to lovers of sci-fi. I look forward to reading more.

Thank you to the author for the ARC and opportunity to read and review.

"Forgive me mother, for I have failed
no charted lands lay where I sailed
no sunrise lines this forgotten shore
just a grave for mine misbegotten core
and so may I die beneath uncaring skies
with dried up lungs and bloody eyes
as the chorus of lies and unheard cries
fill the emptiness of unsaid goodbyes"

I'm not really a sci-fi reader but I took a chance and glad I did. I really enjoyed the story but I'll be honest, certain bits/words confused me, because as I said, I am not really a sci-fi reader and dont understand a lot of this world but i stuck with it and just took my time with it. I've come to enjoy the developing storyline between Ashelyn and Tarlo and intrigued to see where this friendship leads.
I am curious to see what happens next and looking forward to Dark Tides.

Thanks JS for getting me out of my comfort zone for this one!

Firstly, thank you for sending me an ARC to read

J.S. Harman is an author to watch! & Dark Sands is a MUST READ.

This debut novel is going to blow you away and leave you speechless.

The writing in this book is next level. Instantly, you are all consumed by the happenings. The characters are real and human and you are engaged with them the moment you meet them.

This book is unrelenting in its twists. Once you get into the story, you are rarely given time to breathe.
I absolutely CANNOT spoil anything for this book. You MUST go into this book as blind as possible.

The moment I read the last word on that last page, I needed the next book in my hands.

What started as a questionable journey to what they thought was a dead planet turned into complete mayhem.

This book was a wild freaking ride. I had several nights I read well past my bedtime, and frankly shouldn’t have been reading a sci-fi horror in the dark.

So many things I absolutely ate up: the hard science. It’s giving carbon centric thinking (humans SMH), time dilation (a fascinating concept and theory), tardigrade like creatures (water bears), entities (queue paranormal vibes), monsters. BUT the scariest thing of all, when people stop trusting eachother and go off the rails.

Would recommend to all hard science sci-fi lovers
Lesson learned: don’t read it at night unless you wanna have wild dreams.

Great debut novel, it's clear he put a lot of time, a lot of thought and a lot of work into it. Keeping the suspense going and the "what is going on here / what is going to happen?" was top notch, and the wtf'edness of the planet and its makeup was very creepy... which means it was done well! Looking forward to the second one.

Interesting. One of the better scifi books of the year. I don't fully understand what I just read. If was an odd mix of hyper realistic, and reservations I really have to set aside to engage fully with the plot. I'd definitely read the next one. While it was on the shorter side, it took me a decent amount of time to get through. Once I reached the half way point though, things really flew.

Dark Sands is a gripping blend of sci-fi and horror that is full of twists and turns that had me hooked and eagerly awaiting the sequel. Once I started reading I could not put it down. The characters are compelling and each perspective adds fresh insight into the unfolding mystery. The heartfelt connections between the characters (including a truly slowburn relationship) and their camaraderie are perfectly balanced with the chilling developments and horrifying discoveries that they are faced with. I have not read much sci-fi, but J.S. Harman's approach to accessible sci-fi makes this novel perfect for all booklovers. I found that the scientific concepts were explored in a way that is engaging and fit well within the fast-paced plot. If you are looking for a sci-fi novel or simply wanting to immerse yourself in an action-packed world full of adventure and intrigue, Dark Sands is the perfect choice for your next read.

I haven't read many books of this manner but it was one of those sci-fi horror stories that quietly gets under your skin. It follows Tarlo, a gentle, soft-spoken biologist who joins a mission to colonise the desert planet Cahros, a place that seems empty and harmless. The atmosphere shifts fast, it's creeping, claustrophobic tension that never lets up.

The world-building is fantastic!! The harsh landscape, the science, the eerieness. Literally had to keep flicking the pages because I just needed to know more, especially how the chapters where ending!!

The characters are a standout. Tarlo is such an easy character to care about, and the rest of the crew bring their own layers, motivations and flaws. The realness of what had to be faced, isolation, fear, survival, and the strange beauty of finding connection in the most hostile place (no way I could ha!)

The pacing starts slow, but once the tension kicks in, shit!!!! it took of so fast paced, but was perfectly balanced at the same time. It sets up the next book perfectly which im looking forward to.

Overall, it is atmospheric, unsettling, a great blend and horror that feels like my life is at stake (but really im just chillen on my bed safe haga) As i read it, it's like im watching a movie so detailed I'm stressing right next to the characters

Absolutely worth picking up if you love a sci-fi/ horror with eerie planets, creeping dread, and character-driven survival stories.

J.S. Harman has a way with words that truly connects with my soul. Dark Sands was my introduction to Sci-Fi and I couldn't have found a better place to start. A dark adventure through the unknown new planet of Cahros, the next best planet to colonise. Or so they thought. This story gives you chills that are overcome by curiosity. The secrets in the sand created dread and intrigue and the more the team delved into their research the more I needed to know.

Our main character Tarlo is a modest, gentle genius who just wants to experience the stars from a new perspective. I was taken by his kind demeanour and connected to his self-doubt. The rest of the space crew held their own as prominent personalities. To name a few, Mai's confidence in her own scientific judgement drew me straight away. Ashelyn's secretive nature gave a mysterious and alluring air. And Jame's age and skill at the game, shōgi, was endearing. Their will to survive only brought me closer to their characters. The dialogue between them was witty, honest and had such a natural flow. It really immersed me as I got lost in this eerie world. The descriptive writing gave me a beautiful set of images in my mind from the wonders of this planet to the horrors. One particular scene has been burned into my retinas.

The group experience was not one to envy as they questioned their mortality. The tone is darker than the sands as I clung to Tarlo with empathy. The action ramped up and the cliffhangers left me on edge in need of a page turning. I had such an enjoyable time reading this mysterious, adventurous and overall incredible book. I can't wait for the sequel, but in the meantime I need a re-read.

I found the overall premise of the story really intriguing. It was definitely a bit of a slow build, especially with all of the science-y stuff at the beginning before setting out.

I enjoyed the hunt of finding what was hunting them and then trying to navigate it, but honestly, i got a bit lost near the end.

Carhos? You say.

How could we get it so wrong! Cahros was supposed to be our new Eden. Never in our wildest dreams did we expect this to happen.

‘Dark Sands’ J.S. Harman’s first novel hits so brilliantly. It’s an action packed Sci Fi thriller that wouldn’t look out of place as a John Carpenter directed box office hit.

Imagine you volunteer to join an expeditionary team of fellow professionals and specialists to colonise a new world. You’ve said your potential forever goodbyes to your loved ones in the hope of seeing the farthest depths of the universe. It was supposed to be a new life for us all. Paradise you could even say.

A desert wilderness, a desolate planet, of sand and stone, the harsh reality sets in. The isolation. This isn’t as we expected. Something is here! Just not what we were looking for!

What actually transpires needs to be read to be believed. All I will say is ‘oh my, didn’t we get it wrong, so exponentially wrong’

This book will have you questioning your reality, did this happen! Can you survive? I hope so. I really hope you do.

A fantastic debut. An introduction to a new face in the genre. A creative, inspired mind that must be read. I can’t wait to read more.
