High school senior Rayne Everson is the perfect daughter and student. With college just around the corner, the picture-perfect life she’s carefully built is finally within reach. As long as she keeps ignoring the eerie sixth sense that warns her when something’s about to go wrong, she can pretend everything is under control. She’s checked every box to secure the future she’s always wanted, until the day she realizes that future was never meant for her.
When Rayne’s strange feelings pull her into an impossible encounter, the life she knew shatters before her eyes. Gone are the Texas sunsets and college dreams. In their place stands Korum Kingdom, a new world of magic, corruption, and chaos.
There, she learns she’s the only heir to a tyrannical king who tore her from her home to marry her off to a prince bent on destruction. Ordered to train for her role under the king’s most trusted man, the infuriatingly handsome Captain General Kade Vasher, Rayne becomes desperate to understand the life she was born into but never knew about.
Torn between duty and defiance, and caught between a dangerous attraction and the weight of a crown, Rayne begins to question everything she believed about love, strength, and destiny.
Maybe boxes aren’t meant to be checked. Maybe they are meant to be opened.
Jessica McNicholas was born and raised in Austin, Texas, where she grew up with her head above the city skyline and her heart in magical tales. A hopeless romantic with a wild imagination, she was shaped by Disney princess movies, fantasy novels, and the action-packed world of anime. She strives to blend enchantment with emotional depth, always circling back to what matters most to the human experience. When she’s not writing, you’ll find her chugging coffee, hanging with her family, or dreaming about her favorite characters.
This YA debut novel transports Rayne Everson from Austin, Texas - where her biggest concern is applying to collages - to a literal magical realm. In a matter of days, Rayne’s life is turned upside down as she learns of her family history, of a different people, and their pained, prolonged revolution against King Korum. College applications pale in comparison when Rayne learns she may have different destiny within a magical world.
Rayne is a bold, flawed, yet focused fmc and challenged in a way she could have never anticipated. She sprouts her own “challenger” attitude when the King’s right hand man, Commander General, Kade Vasher, is tasked with her preparation to serve the King in his twisted plans to strengthen his own rule. Our mmc carries an air of mystery, for all the right reasons, and makes you want to carve through castle walls to find out all about him 😮💨
This is a story of coming of age, identity and purpose. The magic system is categorized and uncomplicated, with a promise of rich history in future books. The side characters are extremely likable and one of my favorite aspects of this story!! - notably AXEL🩶⚔️ and Keva🔥. Keva especially is written with such depth. Talk about pain and purpose being twin pillars. I can’t wait for her knowledge to surface. I need to know all her secrets ASAP.
All around a great read that flies by with characters you would want to befriend, spar and run through secret tunnels with.
My favorite parts: - magic systems - a mouthy fmc - themes of identity and purpose - a painful past - lovable side characters
And a moment for the STUNNING cover??? Definitely one of the prettiest I’ve seen and radiates Rayne’s essence so well! Definitely recommend this read 🤍
"The people furthest away from places of power are the ones who truly see the hand of it deliver its blows" (249).
"Typicial for a man to forget he's the reason I'm in this position in the first place (235-236).
AHH!! It has truly been SO long since I've read a book with such clear, thoughtful, and intentional themes. This is an e-ARC review, and I want to say a MASSIVE thank you to Jessica McNicholas for entrusting me with an early copy of this story. This book reminded me deeply of all the fun, nostalgic times I had with The Selection by Kiera Cass, except Prince Maxon is actually a morally grey captain instead. In almost every way, this book simply just kept getting better the longer I read it.
McNicholas' Daughter of Creation is an Upper YA romantasy that follows Rayne Everson as she travels from modern-day Austin, Texas to the fictional kingdom of Korum. With empowering commentary on purpose and scathing remarks on hypocritical men in power, this novel truly had me viciously flipping through the pages and immediately ready for the next.
Near the beginning, the writing style, though described as teenager-y that becomes more sophisticated, feels a little too much tell and not quite enough show. As I believe this is a stylistic choice, I'll leave the remark as it is. Once you get well into the story and into the kingdom's politics, that grievance goes right out the window. It almost feels like the author is getting comfortable in the story and so are we! There are a few moments of information through dialogue that almost feels too easy until McNicholas unpacks the many layers beyond what we've been told. Sometimes the dialogue in these portions can get a little confusing, but overall, I thought it was a clever plot device. The writing style is easily unique and deeply emotional. I'm excited to see how the writing grows throughout the series!!
The worldbuilding!! I LOVE how portal magic is working in this novel. The real-life references in stark contrast to this intense kingdom is everything I need from a fantasy book. Rayne showing up to rule a kingdom in Birkenstocks and socks will never not be funny to me. Also, the politics and the lore are great for me. Everyone has a backstory. Everyone has a motive. Everything is complicated.
As for the characters—I LOVE Rayne. I feel I've been waiting too long for a heroine like Rayne, who is both openly strong and sensitive. She is everything!! I also love Axel and Aleecia and Jessalyn and... actually just everybody. They easily come to life on the page through little jokes and gestures! I even love the way Espen is written, even if I do NOT like him! As for Kade, I find him to be the most difficult character to grasp, and I think that's okay for the first book in a series.
All in all, I will absolutely be picking up the next one, and I can't wait to see what McNicholas does next!! THE ENDING?!!! NEED book 2! Until we meet again Miss Rayne Everson!
Wow, wow, wow! I remember when Jess said this was going to be an upper YA story. I immediately got nervous cause I haven't enjoyed the YA genre in a while. Then, I read the book blurb and thought, "oooh! Ok. This might be a book I enjoy" Got my eArc and HOLY COW! This book was so much fun to read!
I absolutely fell in love with Jess' writing style! It was very easy to read but still felt so magical. Rayne is exactly what you want in a strong FMC. She was so relatable and, honestly, I just loved her.
The enemies to lovers definitely felt like what enemies to lovers trope should be! Cause let me tell you Kade Vasher is a SoB, but dammit if I don't love him for the mask slips and tenderness he occasionally shows. He's arrogant but there's something deeper there and I cannot wait to learn more about his story!
All hell broke loose at the end and I seriously am so FREAKING EXCITED for book two. This debut from Jessica McNicholas is a masterpiece! Love! Love!! Love!!!!
OH MY GOSH! I need the next book like now 😱 As a fellow reader herself, Jessica really knows what her audience wants. And let me just say that this book did not disappoint.
I just fell in love with all the characters and the world itself. The story has a great pacing and the world building was so great: we got enough information to understand what was going on, but it wasn’t overly complicated.
As a reader, I really appreciate when authors get their points across in an effective way and Jessica has done a really great job of that. I was starting to get tired of fantasy books just solely on how big the books usually are and how wordy the authors can be… so thank you Jessica!
I can just tell that as we get more book, the world will continue to develop for us. I seriously CANNOT wait to see what adventures take place for Rayne and CO! 🤩
Daughter of Creation literally swept me away!! The writing just got better and better with every page turn! The transition from Texas normalcy to the magic and chaos of Korum Kingdom was perfect and every detail felt alive.
Rayne is such a powerful heroine—flawed, determined, and deeply human. Watching her find her strength, question everything she’s been told, and finally claim her own destiny was incredibly moving.
And Kade? Absolutely magnetic. Their chemistry is electric in all the best ways—equal parts tension, tenderness, and fire. He had me swooning like no other and I definitely can add him to my list of favorite fantasy men! 😍
And I adored the side characters so so much! Axel will hold a place in my heart FOREVER!!!
The plot kept me hooked with its secrets, danger, and unexpected twists!! And the ending left me both wrecked and inspired!! And that epilogue!! I didn’t know I needed it until I had it! But it has me anxiously awaiting book 2!!!
Daughter of Creation is a stunning story about fate, identity, and the courage to become who you’re meant to be. Jessica did such an incredible job emulating that message across the book and truly making you FEEL as you read. I so so so recommend this book!!
Getting to see Raynes growth through this story was great. She went from a scared teenager crying herself to sleep to defying her father and having the courage of a Princess. The romance is a single chili pepper but the tension is there! I loved the bickering and “I hate you” “I know love. Keep hating me” conversations. The friends were great and the ending suspenseful.
That being said, I did struggle to get into it at first and had to stick with it for probably the first 10+ chapters before I finally got hooked and then was able to finish it quick. More importantly though, the big climax was in the last 25 pages and felt very rushed. I know this was set up to be a series but I felt dissatisfied with the ending and hungry for what’s next in not the best way. I will 100% still be getting the next book but I feel like the ending scene wasn’t ready for the curtain to close yet.
Overall a fun read and I am excited to see what else comes from Rayne and Kade’s stories.

OH. MY. GOSH. Y’ALL. Daughter of Creation completely ruined me in the BEST way. I am fully feral over this book. Jessica’s writing is just… *chef’s kiss* like genuinely some of the most beautiful, vivid, magical writing I’ve ever read. She introduces us to the FMC (Rayne) in the cozy familiarity of Austin, TX (hi, obsessed 😍), then seamlessly whisks us off to the absolutely mesmerizing realm of Iluzio where EVERYTHING changes.
Let’s talk about the characters: the MMC?! Literal perfection. He will make you SWOON, drool, and want to throw the book across the room in the best possible way. The tension between him and Rayne?? I was screaming. Crying. Kicking my feet.
The plot is so good - full of secret plans, shadowy tunnels, intense training scenes (yes pls), and twists that will leave you clutching your face. And the ENDING?? Insane!!! I gasped out loud. Twice.
But what really got me was Rayne’s transformation. Watching her step into her power, figure out who she is, and OWN it? Ugh. It gave me chills. She’s passionate, fierce, determined, and by the end of the book, no one is stopping her. Period.
This book is an INSTANT reread for me and officially has a forever home on my favorites shelf. ✨
If you are a fantasy reader, add this to your TBR immediately. I mean it…make haste! The writing, the magic, the world building, the romance, the suspense, the uncertainty, the intensity, it’s all incredible. 10/10, chefs kiss, incredible.
Rayne (our fmc) is discovering herself in the midst of her whole life being flipped upside down and being ripped away from the only life she’s ever known. I adore the way Jess wrote her — she has a strength and resolve but is also deeply human and we see that internal struggle play out as she navigates her newfound destiny. I also love the fact that she’s from Austin and she gets transported into this magical realm. It’s such a different and fresh perspective getting to discover a new world WITH the character and feeling like you were just dropped in with them.
The side characters, and I hesitate to even call them that because they’re so pivotal, well, I would die for them. You’ll feel the same way when you read it, I’m sure of it.
I had to ask my husband to pick my jaw up off the floor after that ending. And like any good first fantasy novel in a series, we’re left on the edge of our seats, awaiting what comes next for Korum and all of Illuzio. My only issue is that it didn’t keep going, which I think is the best kind of issue to have. I cannot wait to see what comes next for this series, I just know it’s going to be good.
When I received my ARC for this book, I was super excited to jump right in and now I wish it wasn't over! As somebody who doesn't usually reach for fantasy (strictly because I'm scared of complicated world building and politics!), this story was easy enough to follow while still including a complex realm with unique history.
We follow 17 year old Rayne Everson go from her normal teenage life in Austin, Texas to being ripped from comfort and compliance and thrown into Korum Kingdom- with little say in what comes next. Although we see a beautifully written castle and kingdom with a dark past, deep secrets and unexpected twists, that's only part of the story. This is the story of a girl who normally follows all of the rules and strives to people please realizing her true power, and that's what shines through. It was so satisfying to see her start to girl boss her way through her time in the castle and tell these men how it's gonna be!! I can't wait to see what comes next for Rayne, especially after that ending...I'm SAT.
Honorable mention: Captain Kade Vasher....are we kidding?!?! KICKING my feet GIGGLING at this fictional man. It gave everything it needed to give and I can't stop thinking about him. I ate it up and I'm ready for whatever Mrs. Jessica will feed us next.
***ARC Reader Review*** Daughter of Creation is a 10/10, a 5/5 stars, and a fantastic Y/A romatasy. If you love fantasy worlds and coming of age novels with a little romance, you will love Daughter of Creation.
Jessica McNicholas does an incredible job making you feel fully immersed in the story right from the first chapter. The subtle world building makes the land of Illuzio real, without being an over the top info dump. (Sorry Tolkien, I still love you!)
Rayne is relatable while not feeling like a simplified, self insert character. Jessica made it easy to get attached to (almost) all the characters immediately after meeting them. With a few exceptions, like those who she made it easy to hate instantly. (Including our rude, broody male lead who had to grow on me.)
Enemies to lovers can be a difficult trope to perfect, the fine line of love and hate, while having the characters still maintain a level of respect for each other is not always achieved. Thankfully while Kade got on my nerves at first, he does have his sweet moments. There’s hints at fated lovers but with so many new and creative elements to keep it fresh. It’s a tale that is as old as time, while still keeping the reader on the edge of their seat.
The only disappointment I have is that I don’t already have the next book in my hands. You’ll be in agony waiting to continue the story, I know I am.
Oh my gods, where do I begin?!? This story absolutely swept me off my feet! From the first moment I met Rayne in the mirror of the studio, I felt a spark of recognition in that reflection. Jessica has the most beautiful way of not just writing her characters, but really making you feel them 🩰
But before we knew it, that mirror became something more and we found ourselves crashed landed in a new world & taking a crash course on all things “Princess” 👸 Rayne, however, is not content being a stereotype! Her fiery and fierce personality quickly has her building her skills and taking on the entire kingdom to fight for her newfound people ⚔️
The characters were marvelous, and you find yourself loving and hating in equal measure. The politics and intrigue and magic was fascinating. And of course, the heat and banter - what can I say? It was on point!! 🤌🏻💋
That ending, though… many expletives were expleted… Husband is concerned for me… Lol I need it with a deep burning desire to find out what comes next ❤️🔥⚔️
Thank you so much to the author for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of Daughter of Creation. It’s been a joy to have Jess as a bookstagram bud and to see her publish this novel after many years of hard work. And it paid off - this book was an absolute blast to read.
From the unique magic system to the characters who felt so real, Daughter of Creation builds a fantasy world like none I’ve experienced before. And the slow burn enemies to lovers was absolute chef’s kiss - loathing and yearning are truly a perfect pairing, and Jess is a master at showcasing this.
While some parts were a bit too much tell than show for me, I will still so engrossed in the story and dying to know what happened next each time I picked it up. And the ENDING???? Girl I am FERAL for book 2!!!
If you’re looking for a new, fantastical world to dive into filled with expansive magic, badass women, and your fav new book boyfriend, Kade Vasher, you’ve found the right book.
Note that the final copy could definitely use a content warning, especially since YA can attract younger readers. Content warning for violence, abuse, assault and sexual themes.
Throughout this story you follow a young Rayne as her life is flipped upside down and everything she thought she knew was not as it seems.
The enemies-to-lovers is perfectly told, and even I was kicking my feet about Kade 😍. Give me a misunderstood, tough childhood, dark haired broody bad-boy any day!
The magic system left me wanting a bit more detail simply from the perspective that I read a LOT of fantasy, high fantasy, and lore based books, so my expectations are a bit high.
The style change in the narrators voice as she grows through the story is very well done, those first few chapters of young niaive Rayne reads well when you think about the progression she goes through.
Overall, a very well done debut book from this author, Jessica McNicholas. She should be proud of this novel and I look forward to being along for the ride.
Definitely looking forward to Book 2 in the Daughters series!
i’d like to thank jessica mcnicholas for allowing me to read her novel as an arc reader. my rating may be a little bit low, but i think it’s because im not the biggest fan of the high fantasy genre. this book does involve a little bit of romance, but the plot is heavily focused on the magic system and politics of this new world.
we follow rayne, a high school senior from texas, who suddenly learns about and is transported to the world from which her father lives in. she navigates relationships, magic, politics, and expectations as she learns and grapples with her new life. i would definitely recommend this for people who enjoy more straight up fantasy. it can be a little complicated as rayne discovers aspects of her new life, and more analysis is recommended. please consider checking out this book on november 11th!
Okay first, that ending? diabolical. i need the next one NOW.
Second, this was so addicting it’s insane. The world, the characters, the backstories? Impeccable. KADE? MY MAN MY MAN MY MAN. Those quotes? He knew what he was doing and Jess knew what we wanted from our mmc.
I genuinely was not expecting to be so blown away by this book. Finishing it in two days without an issue tells you how good it was. Highly recommend, if not for anything else, then just to add another book boyfriend to the list!
Thank you to the author for the chance to read an ARC of this lovely book! (now gimme the next one 🤭)
Jessica McNicholas’ highly anticipated YA debut novel is a stunning display of heart, passion, and the journey of navigating the threshold between the innocence of youth and the striking realities of adulthood. Rayne, the FMC, is an introverted realist far more focused on her studies and the art of dance than what worlds may exist to challenge her lived experience. That is, until she is whisked away to a fantastical place where royal titles mean life or death and magic is a thing to be feared and hidden. This story is perfect for YA readers who love magic, political intrigue, enemies-to-lovers, and exciting adventures.
ARC REVIEW: This book had me in a chokehold! I couldn’t put it down. Jessica creates a world that is so easy to immerse yourself in. You feel the emotions Rayne (FMC) experiences during her journey to your core. You fall in love with these characters, while still loathing the enemy, almost immediately.
This book should definitely be on your list to grab as SOON as it releases. I cannot wait to read the second book and to continue this journey with Rayne!
3.5. I really enjoyed how fast paced this was and I honestly didn’t want to put it down. Though some of the writing was a little cringe I have high hopes that it’s only going to improve from here.
I also hope Kade gets some kind of redemption because I really don’t like him and I know he’s the love interest. I wish it was Axel tho 3

ARC REVIEW: This book was captivating from the beginning. There was so much packed in this one book, and I can't wait for the next book! I loved the development of Rayne throughout the story and believe me when I say that I couldn't put this book down!!
JESSICA!!!!! How in the world was this your debut ?! What a book- holy moly. Obsessed. Loving the characters. The end broke me a little, cannot lie. But also HOW YOU LEAVE US LIKE THAT!! 😂😂😂😂
an enemy to lovers series. the beginning was a little slow with too many details. but as the story developed the better it got. Can't wait for the next one. I will be one of the first in line to enter back into the story .
the story follows Rayne, a high school senior whose picture-perfect life completely flips when she’s thrown into a magical kingdom she never knew existed. 🏰
this book was such an amazing start to a series, i seriously can’t wait to see where it goes next! the writing was beautiful and emotional; i felt everything right alongside Rayne. the world-building and plot were so well thought out, and i’m completely obsessed with the magic system ✨ it’s mysterious, layered, and i just know there’s so much more to discover. the way it ties into the kingdom’s secrets has me hooked! ⚔️
and don’t even get me started on Captain Kade Vasher… this man 🫠 he’s annoying, charming, and impossible not to love. the enemies-to-lovers trope? done so perfectly, they’re literal magnets 🧲 and i ate up every single interaction.
also, i adored the side characters (especially Axel, my sweet love 🥺) they added so much heart to the story!!
and that ending. the epilogue. i am not okay. my jaw was on the floor, my heart was racing, and now i desperately need book 2. i’m honestly still recovering..
thank you Jessica, for letting me read your debut, i had the best time and i’m already ready for the next book! 🤍
I truly enjoyed reading Daughter of Creation! 🖤 It will definitely leave you needing the next book lol. Rayne is such a strong girl and I can't wait to see her become a baddie and put some people in their place lol.
*eARC Review* First, thank you Jessica for allowing me a first look into the magical world you built!
I’m giving this book a 3 stars! Fantasy is really out of my comfort zone but I thoroughly enjoyed myself reading this. It was giving hints of The Selection (my fav dystopian/fantasy series) and hints of Fourth Wing, which I loved!
I appreciate as a non-fantasy reader that the magic system & politics of the world were easy to follow. I would highly recommend this for readers just getting into fantasy. Also, as a Texan, I loved that Rayne is from Austin, that made me connect to her more than I otherwise would.
Also HIGHLY RECOMMEND listening to Billie Eilish on strings while reading, it played into the regal, haunting, and playful tones throughout this book!
