The Insurgence of the Cursed Prince

Rate this book
⫸ POWER. OBSESSION. WAR. DARKNESS. ⫷

I was never crowned. Never chosen. Never meant to rule.

But I will take the throne - piece by piece, body by body - until it's mine.

The war for the throne has begun. Seraiah, the forsaken prince, the cursed son, the weapon forged by Gods and grief, will stop at nothing to take back what is his. His father's reign is built on blood, and Seraiah intends to drown it in more.

But as the battle for power rages, so does the darkness inside him. The curse that coils beneath his skin tightens its grip, feeding on the fury, the loss, the ruin. His kingdom demands a ruler. His enemies demand his fall. But all he can think about is her.

She was his salvation. Now, she is his obsession.

This parallel novel to The Dawn of the Lightning Goddess explores the same brutal world-but through the eyes of its most dangerous player. As war erupts and alliances fracture, Seraiah must choose between the power he was born to wield and the love that could ruin him.

From the author of The Dawn of the Lightning Goddess, this dark, sweeping romantasy dives into the mind of a fallen prince consumed by war, power, and the woman he refuses to forget.

⫸ A DARK FANTASY ROMANCE FOR READERS WHO CRAVE:

✔ Shadowed, obsessive heroes and high-stakes revenge

✔ Brewing war, ancient magic, and loyalties torn apart

✔ Twisted power struggles, executions, and dangerous alliances

✔ A forbidden love tangled in fate, fury, and ruin

For fans of Sarah J. Maas, Carissa Broadbent, and Jennifer L. Armentrout, The Insurgence of the Cursed Prince is a dark, seductive fantasy where love is both a weapon and a curse - and war is the only way to survive.

Wow i loved this book as much as the first and especially as it was the princes POV, love that.

It was like the jigsaw puzzles pieces that i needed from the first book.

I read them both separately but if you've read books in tandem before i would definitely recommend to read these 2 together, i feel it would give a beautiful experience.

The cliffhanger at the end though, Charlotte we need to have words lol i cannot deal with it lol simply cannot wait for the next book

Thank you to Charlotte for very kindly sending me the E-ARC to this book as well as The Dawn of the Lightning Goddess (book #1)!

I read these books separately as I wanted to give each book their own review but I would highly recommend doing the tandem read for the best possible experience. The Insurgence of the Cursed Prince takes place at the same time as The Dawn of the Lightning Goddess but from Seraiah’s POV. If you read TIOTCP after TDOTLG, you will travel back in time to the beginning of the story. There are also scenes from TDOTLG which are repeated in TIOTCP from Seraiah’s POV (probably obvious but worth mentioning) as this made the pacing of the book feel a little slow for me. This is not against the author or their writing but down to my preference as a reader and to help other readers with their decision to read separately or in tandem. If you’re like me and prefer to read chronologically, then I definitely recommend the tandem read (you can find the guide on her TikTok @charlottebedgoodauthor).

I absolutely loved this book and it answered all the questions that I had from reading book 1. The world building had a lot more depth and the story was gripping and full of action!! It also made me feel more connected with Seraiah, now that we know more about his character and can better understand why he is the way that he is. His story was tragic and at times, utterly heartbreaking to read (it gets quite dark so make sure to check the TWs before reading!!). He’s been through so much pain and suffering and Charlotte’s detailed and captivating writing really makes you feel that pain with him. If you like an emotionally damaged, morally grey man, then you need to meet Seraiah. He may be emotionally repressed but that doesn’t mean he’s not romantic. This man YEARNS for Arraetta and the way that he talks and thinks about her is so beautiful. He’s protective, a little possessive, fiercely loyal and would let the world burn for her. What more could you want in a man???

The second half of this book had me on the edge of my seat and the ending had me in a CHOKEHOLD. I cannot wait for the next instalment of this series and I’m so excited to see where Charlotte takes this amazing story!!

I jumped straight into this ARC, having finished book 1, The Dawn of the Lightning Goddess, Charlotte Bedgood’s debut novel. I was desperate to find out what had happened to Arraetta and Seraiah at the end of book one and…I then realised that this was in fact, a book set at the same time as book 1 but told from Seraiah’s POV! Some might expect me to be disappointed but I honestly wasn’t, this book brought so much more detail, more plot and more depth to the characters and I lapped it up.

Seraiah is a deeply tormented and tortured soul. Knowing he was infected by ‘the dark’, I thought I had an idea how ‘damaged’ our MMC was but I really had no idea! This poor man - the way he is treated by his family, his father especially is so abhorrent but I loved finding out more about him. His inner voice was just sensational and added such a twisted but entertaining dynamic to the book.

Seeing the events of book 1 through Seraiah’s eyes this time meant that as a reader I learnt so much more about the people, his race and the side characters I had come to care about previously. The curse really is just that, a curse and I was able to see just how much it affected every part of his life. When he met Arraetta, his whole world changes and he will do anything to protect his love, his obsession!

I have read these books back to back and really enjoyed doing it that way. However I am also very much pro reading them in tandem, especially as these are parallel books, running side by side.

Thank you so much Charlotte Bedgood for allowing me to be an ARC reader, I absolutely loved your book and can’t wait for it to be out for everyone else to be able to enjoy it as much as I have! Now for the wait for book 3…one I will await very eagerly!

Got to add another star on this as it was the jigsaw pieces to fit the dawn of the lightning goddess It explained soooo much more ,I tandem read them together in the end. He went through so much. It's darker I thought than the FMC POV and rightly so.
So this fantasy was totally different to what I had previously read. A little more sci-fi it felt, but a totally new concept reading it from just the FMC POV .I had to get used to the different realms and perspectives but I enjoyed that part of it. it was action packed and fast paced. Fated mates with a twist.

This book is the second instalment of Charlotte Bedgood's The Sovereign Series. (Book one The Dawn of the Lightning Goddess)

The book is written in a single first person POV and it's the POV of the super broody, intense Male Main Character, Seraiah. Who most definitely is my favourite character in this series.

This novel tells the story of a 'Cursed Prince' and he's heartbreakingly difficult start , and devastatingly unfair present in life. It tells a story of pain, fear, danger, and magical enemies to end all enemies. Seraiah is subject to constant trials, both physically and mentally. Even through all of these trials and tribulations, Seraiah still strives to do right by the one he loves and has HUGE "She's Mine" energy, which lets face it, we all love. It includes tropes such as fated love, and SLOW SLOW burning romance that just teases and teases the whole way through...

It is a story to inspire those who are fighting to take their rightful place in the world, to give a voice to those who may find the battle too difficult to bear.

The descriptive language used in this book really helps you to immerse yourself in it. It allows you to fear the monsters, feel the love ties, and picture the moments dreamt up to pull and shatter those heartstrings of yours. Charlotte really knows how to pull you in hook, line and sinker.

The world building is pure brilliance. The descriptions are so vivid, the building of the world(s) are so large that you can almost envision yourself walking through the streets, fields and rooftops with the characters themselves. Just to clarify, I would take a ticket to head on over to Zika in a heartbeat!

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a slow burn, magical, intense feeling romantasy. It's a fabulous second installation of the series, and if you can, I would tandem read it with book one: the Dawn of the Lightning Goddess and it really creates a mutli POV telling of a story, that so deserves all the hype. The guide to reading them in tandem is on Charlotte Bedgoods TikTok @charlottebedgoodauthor

Wow just wow. A cursed prince, fated mates, tension AND you get to PICK your ending then go and read the other one and it was amazing!!!!

I read this in tandem with “ The Dawn of Lightening Godess” I loved the dual perspective of reading the two together. It gave insight into both of the characters mindsets and gave me many “arghhh” moments. But in the best way possible.

The dynamic of the FMC and MMC was perfection, so much tension, teasing, witty banter and chemistry. It had me hooked from beginning to end. Speaking of which I need more. I finished these this morning and I can’t stop thinking about them. I need to know what happens next.

The characters in this book are so varied, diverse and memorable. I fell in love with so many of these characters. Each character has their own background, personality and nature which for me really adds to a book. There is LBTQIA+ romance in here, abuse due to homophobia is mentioned (twice I believe) but not a detailed account.

The writing is incredible. I want to learn Zikan it is beautiful. I really enjoyed this touch in the book as it makes you feel immersed in the story and the history of the characters. The pacing was spot on for me the perfect blend of: action, world building, love, loss and longing. I didn’t see either ending coming, (I am a habitual spoiler of books for myself because of pattern recognition!), both perspectives offer something completely different to the storyline and it’s only left me wanting more!

I can not thank Charlotte enough for giving me access to the EARCS, these are two incredible books! I can’t wait to see where this is going and to follow your journey as an author.

Oh the yearning in this one....

✨Slow-Burn Romance with Spice
✨Forbidden Love / Obsession
✨A cursed heir
✨Political Intrigue
✨Cursed Royalty / Ancient Magic
✨Found family

"A goddess radiating in the natural light, which embellished her aura and lit her honey skin. Utter perfection...those enchanting eyes, that lustrous hair, those pink, soft, damp lips. She was the first raindrop in a desolate desert, the velvet sky at twilight when all else had been dark the heady gaze of the moon upon a once rocky lake..The one the Gods had vowed was mine. She was mine. My Kindred Spirit."

I was fortunate enough to be sent an ARC of this book and it was so enjoyable! I really appreciated the masterful balance of high stakes fantasy and slow burn romance as I generally hate when it leans too much one way or the other in a way that feels sloppy...and the slow burn! The slow burn and yearning was so satisfying! I lived for the moments when we got to see Seraiah's vulnerability and heart, and it certainly felt earned. He was complex, layered, in a way that kept me invested in his growth, without feeling like there were holes and inconsistencies. I love when a character is written so well, that I genuinely feel attached to them. As someone who was isolated by a curse, we as the reader get to watch this MMC grow and change and become endeared in the process as he learns to trust others, while fighting for what he knows to be right (which is entangled with who he is expected to become).

No doubt a great book for Romantasy lovers and I look forward to reading the FMC's perspective.

I read the Insurgence of the cursed prince and the Dawn of the lightning goddess as a tandem read and OMG. I’ve not done a tandem read before but having both points of view was amazing. Some of my favourite tropes, fated mates, political tension and magic are included. The insurgence has a lot of great world building and Seraiah the cursed prince was somehow both broody and yearning but also caring and in love with Arraetta and an artist showing a softer side in a world at war!

I did find some of the world building confusing at times and some of the politics/war wasn’t my favourite topic but I loved the slow burn and the yearning. There was a lot of tension and it kept me on the edge of my seat! There were also several scenes that were horrifyingly scary and contained gore that reminded me this is an unstable kingdom on the brink of War.

Seraiah although a cursed prince, may be the *KING* of touch her and die vibes, the ultimate protector even if the fate of his beloved Kingdom is at risk!

I’m not sure if there will be more books in this series but I’d love to read more about Arraetta and Seraiah! Thank you for the opportunity to read an ARC copy of this book. I can’t wait to get a paper copy because I don’t really like reading e copies and would love a trophy for my shelf!

After Charlotte made a post recently about her duet being a tandem read I knew I had to read it that way.

It wasn't too difficult to follow through the order on which chapters to read at stages. I liked how TDOTLG is set in Arraetta's POV and TIOTCP from Seraiah's POV. I'm a big fan of dual reads because I like how you get to know what the characters are thinking.

We get some really interesting tropes: fated mates, magic, protective nature & a sprinkle of yearning. There was quite detailed world building and magical intrigue.

There is tension and this is a bit of a slow burn! Some parts contained gore and were scary, which is often found in this genre. So many twists and turns that I did NOT see coming. I was on the edge of my seats and had to find out what happened next!

Some of the scenes are repeated (when you tandem read it) but I didn't mind that because I got to hear both their POV in those scenes.

I feel the characters all have some character development. Genie was one of my favourite characters, and I quite liked Freddie too.

I actually did prefer Seraiah's POV! I found this book really set the tone of the story and I loved to hear his side as the story progressed. He's a very likeable character and I felt he had so much growth!

Thank you @Charlotte for reaching out and offering me a copy 💜

WHAT TO EXPECT:
✔️ Fated Lovers
✔️ Ancient Magic
✔️ Forbidden Love
✔️ Gods & Monsters
✔️ Royalty
✔️ Danger
✔️ Cursed Prince

The first book in the series, The Dawn of the Lightning Goddess, was written from Arraetta’s point of view, and this second book, The Insurgence of the Cursed Prince, was Seraiah’s, which filled in some of the gaps when he would sometimes disappear. Keep in mind that this is my personal preference or opinion, which may have been influenced because I read the two books back to back, but I felt like with the retelling from another point of view, I did not feel new suspense or angst in the storyline; the story did not progress past the ending in the first book which I was left itching to see what happened after the cliffhanger.

I did not dislike The Insurgence of the Cursed Prince. Still, I honestly feel like I would have enjoyed the story better if it had been written from a dual point of view, alternating chapters rather than a whole book from the other characters' perspective.

Am I invested enough in the storyline to continue with the series? Yes, but I hope future books in the series are not the same storyline told by different characters. Because the story still holds my interest and I want to continue with the series, I am giving it a rating of 4 / 5 stars.

Thank you Charlotte for the ARC! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
- I would sum this up as a dark masterpiece that demands to be heard!

The Insurgence of The Cursed Prince is everything I never knew I needed and *more*.

Charlotte you have proven yourself a force to be reckoned with within the dark romantasy world! Your writing is feral, lyrical, and absolutely merciless in the best possible way.

From the first page, I was consumed by Seraiah’s descent into obsession, power, and vengeance. Haunting. His choices brutal, and his love—utterly, devastatingly obsessive.

This isn't just a story—it's a war cry wrapped in blood, magic, and heartbreak 💙

The world is rich, the emotions gutting, and the stakes sky-high. You feel every fracture in Seraiah’s mind, every flicker of hope he dares to hold, and every terrible decision he makes in the name of love and power.

Charlotte, you've given us a cursed prince we’ll never forget—and now we *need* him in our ears. An audiobook is an absolute MUST. This story deserves to be performed, to be felt through every breath, snarl, and broken vow. Give us the voice of Seraiah—we’re ready to fall all over again.

If you love morally grey men, deadly stakes, forbidden longing, and prose that cuts like a blade—you *need* this book. 👏🏻

Tropes:
- Obsessed MMC
- MMC falls first
- Hurt/Comfort
- Touch her and Die
- Sweet FMC

This was a good read but I do think it was a little too long. A bit of things could’ve been cut. The beginning for me was slow but the middle 😫 IMPECCABLE. That’s the part that really had me hooked, because they finally crossed paths and it definitely picked up beautifully!

I haven’t read from an author in a long time who has written in such a powerful way, which was also keeping me on board with reading, it was beautiful.

If you know me, I love me some Beauty and the Beast and he was wearing blue and gold, she’s wearing gold when they met 😫 I don’t know if that was intentional but I LOVED THAT.

His reaction to her blackouts were impeccable, love me some hurt/comfort

The banter between Jonah, Alex and Freddie and Seraiah was the best.

The way he speaks of her 😫

The answer he gave when she asked him what’s his favourite color is how every man should answer period!

Great read but a little slow for my liking, pacing could’ve made this 10x better but it was amazing still!

I would like to say thank you to Charlotte for asking me to read this book.

Dark, decadent, and utterly addictive, The Insurgence of the Cursed Prince is a masterclass in slow-burn fantasy romance. Tension coils between two fated souls battling prophecy and ruthless family politics.

Seraiah, the cursed prince with shadows in his blood, is obsessive and terrifyingly possessive of Arraetta. He falls first — hard and fast.

But Arraetta is no damsel. She’s fire in a world that wants to freeze her, a sharp blade in a court full of manipulators.

Their romance smoulders with stolen glances, fierce arguments, and an ancient, unyielding bond. Touch her, and you die — a thrilling, raw intimacy forged in fire and prophecy. When they finally give in? Expect chaos, magic, pain, and passion.

If you love fantasy romance layered with tension, dark secrets, and a heroine who refuses to sit back and do nothing — alongside a brooding prince desperate to be worthy — this is the book for you.

4.5🌟 0.5🌶️

I loved this story. I do wish I'd have read The dawn of the Lightning goddess in tandem with this book though, as some parts of the story were too repetitive-unless that was my perception because I read them one after the other? It reminded me greatly of the HadesXPersephone series with each book dedicated to the Male/Female pov.

The story and writing was so gripping with vivid imagery and scenes that will forever live in my mind!!

The second book was very much darker than the first, so trigger warnings need to be heeded.

This book sees the development of a relationship between the two main protagonists from Seraiah's pov, and WOW, there's a LOT going on behind the scenes that wasn't prevalent in Arraetta's book. This book explores Seraiah's upbringing, including abuse, the fractures between his family and how his friends became his "ride or di€". The back story of the communities existence and how Seraiah became the "cursed prince".
Just like the first book, this one had me excited, happy, sad and gasping (audibly) throughout with so many "OH!!" moments included. An agonising slow burn with a gripping cliff hanger!!

I can't wait for the next book!!!

Thank you to Charlotte, the author, for an ARC of this book.

I enjoyed reading this dark Romantasy with a cursed prince who goes through so much emotionally and physically with toxic family relationships.

I think I massively messed up with the reading order as I read this book prior to reading book 1 and for me, I didn't quite connect to the FMC and was itching to hear her voice. This was entirely on me as book 1 IS the FMC's POV and so I was relying on the Prince's POV for this book.

The plot was pacy and I liked that there were darker themes to really pull you into the story alongside with a great cast of side characters.

I rarely read single POVs of the MMC and usually read dual or FMC POVS and I think for me, this is what I struggled with even though he had all the same vibes that I like 'she's mine' vibes and all.

This book is written beautifully and the world building is easy to follow. I found the phones being used and the crossover to the human world tricky to navigate but this is me rather than the book.

In all I'd recommend this if you love:

🖤 Plots with curses and familial issues
✨ Darker magic
🌶️ A dash of spice.
♥️ Strong FMCs
🖤 Political plots

Firstly, to say that this 'ARC' review is for the second book, The Insurgence of The Cursed Prince. However, given that I had not read the first, I decided to do both in tandem.

BEST DECISION EVER! 🙌 While I can't speak for reading the two books independently... I have to say that I think tandem is probably the best way. I also chose to finish the last chapter of IoTCP before DoTLG and it left me like...

Daaaaaaaamnnnnnn!! Book 3, MUST HAVE. gimme. gimme noooowwwwww 😆👌

The story is ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT.
The banter and playfulness between characters had me cackling pretty much all the way through... special shout out to Freddie, who is perhaps my fave 😱

This is book two of the Sovereign series. This is a dark, epic, fated love. Forbidden desire, fantasy romance. This story is parallel to the first book in the series. It is Seraiah’s version. From the start of the book, you are drawn in and can’t put it down. This book has a strong, well-developed and interesting story line with twists and unexpected turns that keep you reading and turning the pages. It pulled me in from beginning to end and held my attention. Amazing world building that is detailed and imaginative and so well done that you're drawn into a fantastic world unlike any other. Strong, interesting, and fascinating characters that are well developed and diverse. The storyline is fast-paced and very well written, filled with magic, Gods, monsters, danger, death, politics, intrigue, and subterfuge. The plot thickens, the suspense builds, and the passion erupts! I can’t wait to read the rest of this series. I am voluntarily posting an honest review after reading an Advance Reader Copy of this story.

ARC Review - This damn book, I loved it. I chose to read it in tandem with the first in the series (Dawn of the lighting Goddess) and I would encourage everyone to do the same to get the full effect of the beautifully written story. This book is from the MMC's perspective and makes you fall hard for him. Now the president (maybe vice president) of his fan club.

The MMC is emotionally damaged - in the best way - we are taking locked up emotions, he goes through the book exploring these emotions alongside trying his best to avoid them.

The plot is chefs kiss, and again because of the tandem read you get to go over certain chapters and events in more detail which only adds to plot.

And this man longs, and longs hard!

If you like magic, mystery, twists & turns where a male will do everything in his power for his kindred spirit and fated mate. This book is for you.

Tropes I Ate Up:
– Obsessed MMC
– MMC Falls First
– Hurt/Comfort (and done SO well!)
– Touch Her and Die
– Sweet, soft FMC

This was such a good read. The beginning started off a bit slow for me, but once they finally crossed paths? The story took off and I couldn’t put it down. The middle was absolutely impeccable — emotional, romantic, and full of tension in all the right ways.

It’s been a long time since I’ve read an author with such powerful, beautiful writing that actually kept me hooked.

And listen… I’m a sucker for Beauty and the Beast, so when he showed up in blue and gold and she was in gold? I caught that. I loved that. Intentional or not, it fed my fairy tale soul.

His reaction to her blackouts? Chef’s kiss.
The banter between Jonah, Alex, Freddie, and Seraiah? A highlight.
And the way he talks about her? The answer he gave when she asked his favorite color?? That’s how every man should respond. Period.

📚 A little long? Yes.
📖 Worth it? 1000%.

The 2nd instalment of this romantasy series is from Seraiah's POV. I luved learning more about Seraiah and seeing how his character develops and how he experienced their relationship 🤩

The epic world building and the slow burn between our fated sole mates continues in this instalment 🤩 👌 There is a lot of yearning and longing 😉 iykyk! 😉🤪

In this instalment we learn how much Seraiah has suffered in his life 😪 but he continues to fight against his oppressive father and his inner demons 💪

The banter between Seraiah and Freddie is fabulous 🤣 Freddie has been added to my list of favourite side characters 🤪🤣🤩

This and the first book in the series would make an excellent tandem read! Im looking forward to getting my hands on the physical copies to start on that adventure, while I wait on the next instalment being released! 🤩😅 I can't wait to find out what happens next 🤗

4.5 stars!

Seraiah’s internal battle for control and love was interesting to see and I loved the second half of the book where the internal struggle turns darker but his love and need for Arraetta grows stronger too.

This was psychologically dark, where the struggle for control, power and love is blended into a complex morally grey character.

After having read The Dawn of The Lightning Goddess which goes through Arraetta’s point of view during the same period, I would suggest reading both in tandem as you will get a more completed version of events.

I cannot wait to read the next book in The Sovereign series because I need to know what happens after the ending 🤯.

This was a really interesting read (especially following my reading of the first book a month or so before). While I did love it and enjoyed Seraiah's POV which aided MASSIVELY in the world building which was absent in Araetta's book some parts made me prefer her book (sorry Seraiah). However, the glossary at the start and the worldbuilding was really strong here and allowed me to become a lot more immersed and reading it not in a tandem was interesting in its own way and I did not feel like i was missing out too much by reading them separately! Overall a very fun and interesting read that definitely filled in some gaps the first book left and I actually enjoyed the separation of POVs by books rather than the standard alternation of POVs in one book!

This was such an amazing read, i loved reading it from Seraiah's point of view and to get more understand of what happened during the times when Arraetta blacks out. There is so much more to Seraiah that meets the eye and he has to deal with his father who isnt a nice person and even worse towards him. He is so protective over Arraetta and would do anything to help her even though sometimes it does back fire on him they fight the darkness and yes it does finish on a cliffhanger but i cant wait for the next book to find out what happens, these books just suck you in and make it hard to stop reading. i would also suggest tandum reading which is what i had done.

“She was the first raindrop in a desolate desert, the velvet sky at twilight when all else had been dark, the heady gaze of the moon upon a once rocky lake. She was perfection incarnate. The breathing muse of flawless divinity.” 🫠😩🥰 I love hiiiimmmm

Such a good read. This book has an almost cinematic quality to it with scenes playing out like the ones in the movies. Incredibly well written with a true passion for detail, this book has a little something for everyone.
Strong FMC
Fated mates
Possessive MMC
Slow burn
Cursed Prince

There is a little heartbreak and betrayal in the story. A story where loyalty is questioned and love takes precedence over all else.
Set in the fantasy genre with all the micro tropes we love. A job well done I'd say.

Thank you for the ARC!!
This was a beautiful piece to read. The main characters had so much depth, and the plot was so thick, it was hard not to love.
There was quite a bit of violence, that at some times could be hard to digest. But the violence just made the storyline that much better.
Think of the enemies-to-lovers trope, but they are just falling in love at a slow burn pace and a little bit of spice to them learning each other’s personality.
