Another Austrian castle, another treasure hunt, more gangs of crooks, more improbably posh heroes and their devoted servants, another Dornford Yates adventure story. Inheriting the Castle of Hohenems in Carinthia, Austria, after the death of Nicholas Ferrers in a road accident, our heroes attempt to gain possession of the fortune secreted within, a collection of carved jewels of the Borgias, walled up in the dungeons, being opposed by the neighbouring those of Haydn and by Harris and his gang.
What I enjoy about the Dornford Yates novels are mystery, murder, suspense in lovely settings of Austrian countryside with castles, aristrocracy and English gentlemen in Rolls Royces pursuing their enemy. You don't know what the outcome will be. This is the third Yates book I have read and they are all equally enjoyable. My reviews will not tell the plot, as it may spoil the story. Suffice to say, it starts with hero and his cousin inheriting a castle from a Great Uncle who died suddenly and mysteriously.
Adventure and romance in the Austrian Alps, with magnificent scenery, a rambling castle, hidden jewels, suitably evil villains, fast cars (just one in this book) and a damsel to be rescued. I didn't like this quite as much as Yates' Chandos novels; the protagonists mirror Chandos and Mansel, but are not as strongly drawn. To balance this, the tone is a little lighter, with B-b-b-Berry-style banter and badinage. A solid four stars.
Another Austrian castle, another treasure hunt, more gangs of crooks, more improbably posh heroes and their devoted servants, another Dornford Yates adventure story. A cracking read although the similarities to earlier Yates novels are all too apparent I wouldn't have it any other way, more of the same is fine by me and this one just flew by.
