She came to Ashbourne Manor with a borrowed name and a secret that could get her killed.
Jonathan Ashbourne wasn't looking for love. A duke who lived by fairness rather than rank, he measured people by honesty — not birth. But from the moment Elena entered his home, something shifted. She was not what she seemed. And he found himself noticing.
Elena Vinteren is a princess in hiding. A brutal coup has shattered her kingdom, and the men who destroyed it are still hunting her. In Boston, behind the quiet role of a governess, she has built a fragile life. One that depends on no one seeing past the surface.
Jonathan sees past the surface.
As trust grows into something neither of them can name, Elena faces an impossible choice: the love she never expected — or the crown she was born to reclaim.
Because the past is patient. And even an ocean cannot keep a secret forever.
A sweeping historical romance of hidden identity, slow-burn love, and a loyalty tested by danger and destiny.
Perfect for readers who love:
Slow-burn romance with emotional depth Hidden identities and royal secrets Regency-era settings with high stakes Strong heroines and heroes worth trusting
An epic novel! Elena is in succession to be the next ruler of her country when a coup d'état happens and they capture her father, the King. She escapes and leaves the country to go into hiding as governess in America for Ashbourne House, where she meets Duke Jonathan Ashbourne. This story has all the elements you would ever want: exciting action, a strong heroine, intrigue, and a sweet love story. It is really a series in one book, having 163 chapters, allowing you to rest after intense action or changing thoughts. Keep in mind that when the book opens she is around 18-19 years old with maturity twice her age. Allow some time for reading this book and start by gathering together a nice hot beverage and a tray of cookies!
The plot and main parts of the story are there and intriguing- however the story lacks detail and your left wondering what happened between main events/chqracters and there's not a lot of buildup for anything. It has a couple endings that would be good stopping points but it continues on. It's written more like a tv show where the main parts are there but not enough detail or character perspective that really pulls the reader into the situation and makes them hold their breath or invest themselves in the characters. It may just not be my preferred POV.
This book was very disjointed. Very short chapters consisting of 2-3 pages each; with well over 100 chapters. Very boring book and I will not be reading anything more from this author. I did not like his writing style at all!
This one is definitely going into my repeat reads list. The characters were absolutely amazing. The storyline, the plot, the drama…. It was all very well written.
