Jakes' writing style normally meshes with and matches well with the stories she writes. For me, that wasn't quite the case here, and I love her style.

In this case, the sometimes staccato nature of her sentence structure didn't settle in and snap into place with this story and these characters. When the writing would smooth out, it felt much better, more fitting these characters, Con and Quinn.

The obstacle that kept me from completely connecting to everything: Jakes' usual abundance of emotional descriptors isn't as evident here. Instead of letting the characters demonstrate their tension, sadness, anticipation and need, I was told as much more often than not. Her usual awesomeness in this arena is here but not at the level I normally experience, a level that usually pushes me right off the emotional cliff without so much as a grappling hook, which I gobble up like peanut butter fudge. YUM.

I can see the attempts but can't say the feelings grabbed me in this one. Jakes does emotion very well, but not here, not at her typically delicious depths through most of the story.

There are several instances of Con's name written where Quinn's should be and vice versa.

In the last quarter of the book, some of that strong emotion shows itself. That gut-punch of realization, of letting go, of freedom, is there between Con and Quinn. For as quickly as they "connected" on page, it took a long time for that to filter through to me.

Con and Quinn do trade roles in and outside of the bedroom and I always enjoy that. Power changes in balance and talent, and that is reflected here.

What isn't reflected is the ribbon of humor that also helps in connecting with her characters. There are a few scenes and lines, and I latched onto them, hoping for more, knowing they'd help me know Con and Quinn better.

I very much like and appreciate and respect that the topic of re-entry is discussed. The difficulties and anxieties of rejoining society once soldiers return home after completing a tour is handled gently and lovingly, just like Con and Quinn handle each other.

This was a mixed bag for me. I'm very glad that I read it and will read the next in the series.

I really dug this one. I really enjoyed the dynamic between Con and Quinn, the fact that neither of them was always dominant or submissive, but that they learned to give and take as each needed. A very good romance.

Again I will state that I really, really need to read blurbs better before I read a book.

So, this was a little bit BDSM and I normally stay far away from that. I considered throwing in the towel but didn’t. It wasn’t too much and I wasn’t overly uncomfortable. It’s just not really my thing. I don’t really get it.

In this case I just focused on the reasoning being needing to care for someone, it made it easier and a lot of it was kind of sweet. Oh, not the BDSM part but the boys themselves.

I felt pretty happy for these boys at the end.

I still need to read blurbs better.

Oh, and another thing? I am really jealous of these books with these awesome tattoo artists. I want an awesome tattoo artist dammit!

I LOVE SE JAKES - That being said, this was like a short draft or planning for a full length novel. I don't think her style is suited for short reads. Why? Because her stories have detail and feeling and you can't give that full rains if there's not enough words!

I really enjoyed this and I loved the MC's. I have a think for soldiers and broken alphas and can you imagine how great Con would be if there was room for his character to really reach full potential? Well not only Con but Q as well. There was just so much potential here and I want to pull my hair and jump up and down for not getting to have them in full glory.

I LOVED her Men of Honor series. This could have been another fantastic series. I still loved it just would have loved more.

Quinn's brother Scott asks him to bring his best friend to his wedding. Scott asks his best friend Con, a Delta force soldier to bring his brother to his wedding. Things have been strained between Quinn and his family because he wouldn't follow in the military. Oh, he's gay too. Quinn believes that it has made a difference in the family ties. What follows is the road trip from hell that just might end in heaven.

This was another page turner from the amazing S.E.Jakes. Exciting, hot and a whole lotta sexy going on. It's always a great day when there is a book to read by S.E. Jakes.

This is what I'm looking for when I read an S.E. Jakes book. This is what she does so well. Once I started it, I couldn't put it down. I loved the struggle. The way these two men, both broken in their own ways, were able to open up to each other. The way the just knew it was safe to do so.

There is sex, but it's written in a way to show the reader the connection between Con and Quinn, not so much the act itself. The kissing is hotter, I swear. The underlying passion between the two men made me feel for them all the more.

I really loved this.

I didn't love this one, I'm not sure what didn't work for me...but between the military, hustling and BDSM it just was all over the place. Not my cuppa.

*This book is strictly dickly; vaginas need not apply.

Ohhhhh, do I ever love a good road trip story! Forced proximity! Slim Jims (TM)! Seedy hotels! ANAL! Hey--what can I say? Not every trip ends at Disneyland.

Quinn McKenna and Con Jenkins don't know each other, but they will bond over (Bend over? Yeah, that, too) their love of Slim Jims...if by Slim Jims you mean hot, spitty blow jobs and hot sexxin' on Harleys during a road trip, and I DO mean that, thank you Sweet Baby Jesus in a Route 66 roadside stand.

Quinn's brother, Scott, is getting married, and he set up a special trip for Quinn and Con, Scott's Delta Force brother, to ensure: 1) that they both get to the church on time, and 2) more importantly, that I get my daily recommended dosage of one hot, tatted, Dommy guy (Quinn) gettin' all bossy pants on a smokin', surly special forces soldier (Con) who likes it when you tell him to take his pants off (Sir, yes, Sir!).

Con's way of decompressing from a mission is by hustling pool, and he's really good with a pool cue (insert standard phallic symbol joke here.)

(I would like Con to insert his surly stick in me; unfortunately, he doesn't swing that way, and I probably shouldn't include my personal observations in a book review.)

(Screw you, this is my review, I can say what I want, and I want that stick.)

(Put a little English on that, my brother.)

(Stop. Just stop.)

Con's talent with pool often lands them in hot water with the locals as they travel across the country. Quinn keeps trying to make him stop, finally punishing Con with a timeout in a back alley.

On his knees.

With his sweet, surly lips on Quinn's peen.

Because that's TOTALLY gonna make Con stop hustling. (No, it TOTALLY won't, but who cares. BJs for life, man!).

If you're a little missish (like me) about hardcore D/s scenes, don't worry. There are no ball gags and rubbery spit strings here...though there might've been some verra, verra creative use of a leather bracelet and someone's testicles...

Quinn's more about controlling things, like Con's wicked dick, and Con coming in his pants, and Con licking...well, I think you get the picture. Yes, let's all take a moment to enjoy this picture.

Both men have their issues--Quinn's long-time lover died and he's still harboring some anger; some tv execs want him to have his own tattoo-related reality show, but he just wants to be a rolling stone that gathers no semen.

Con had a rough childhood, hustling pool with his lowlife father. (Sad clown.)

(That's a little creepy.)

(Yes, it is creepy. Let's go with the sad trombone instead.)

These two alphaholes get to know each other through rim jobs (What? Doesn't everyone?), tattoos, polite topping and bottoming ("I do believe it was your turn to come in hot." "Oh, no. I do believe it was your turn to go in at ramming speed."), prostate massages, and that one thing...oh, yeah, TALKING LIKE ADULTS.

So poignant.

So heart wrenching.

And so FUCKIN' HOT. Let's not forget the most important thing.

Bring your vagina-bib because dripping may be involved. Two peens up--one for each guy--in this book.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4 stars

I am a big fan of author S.E. Jakes and I love a good road trip story, and I found Hold the Line to be really entertaining. It is a very short novel but Jakes packs a lot in here and I really enjoyed following along with Quinn and Con’s journey. The guys fall into bed pretty quickly and are definitely steamy. I wouldn’t call this a traditional BDSM story, but there are some dominance and submission elements between Con and Quinn that add some nice intensity and the physical connection between them is strong right from the start. I will admit that a lot of the book is spent following these guys along their travels interspersed with lots of sex, but there is enough solid story tying it all together to make this one work.

It is clear that the guys connect emotionally as well as physically, but both men are wary about opening up. Over the course of the story, we slowly learn more about both men and their pasts, as well as the reasons why they are traveling together and what happened to Scott to prevent him from coming along. Both of these guys have interesting backstories and the characters are nicely developed for a shorter book. I did at times feel like I was losing the thread of the conflict between them in terms of why they were at odds and what their personal issues all were. But the story is mostly tight and clean and we get a really nice resolution to the story that brings things all together.

Overall I found this a sexy, fun story that is a nice easy read. There is some good chemistry between these guys and they are both nicely developed characters. This story is the first of a series that looks to be focused on Quinn’s tattoo parlor, and I am really looking forward to continuing on for more.

I felt a disconnect about halfway through this story. I liked both Con and Quinn but felt that the whole relationship got pushed too far too fast.

I was kind of confused by parts of this. So Quinn's brother (who lost both legs in Afghanistan - I think) is getting married and asks his brother to escort his best military buddy because for some reason he figures Con will wander off and get in trouble. Which is true. However Quinn is pissed at the whole idea, although he's lusting after Con soon enough and Con doesn't seem to mind that Quinn is a Dom. They go cross country (LA to New York) following the brothers itinerary where all hotels and meals are paid for. They have one little fall-out but basically fall in love along the way. Then they get there and the brother goes "I didn't say you had to drive cross-country, just bring him here." WTH? Then why did you have hotels paid for all the way? And Quinn had this chip on his shoulder that he hadn't joined the military like his whole family and yet everyone seemed glad he didn't and could care less and also knew he was gay, so whatever. Come on Quinn, you are in your 30's, suck it up already. Also he started tattooing Con on the way, a bit every night. I thought you had to let it heal between sessions. According to him it was healing well... overnight. Minor thing I may be wrong about.

So basically I wasn't sure the whole point except match-making and why go to that level of detail if you figured they'd just fly out? Confused. So it was okay just didn't love it.

Read 1/26/15 Reread: Forgot what this was about and there's a new one. SE Jake's is at the top of my list of favorite authors. There's something about her military characters that just works for me. Her Men of Honor series is m all-time favorite that I've read at least 4-5 times each. This story had much of the same feeling. Very similar, in fact. That's what I like about it.

Quinn is a bit of a black sheep to his family because with his family legacy in the military, he chose not to go in. His choices were different and now he's a gifted tattoo artist. Con is Quinn's brother's teammate and Scott is getting married in New York. He wants Quinn and Con, who've never met, to travel together on a two week sightseeing trip, to get to his wedding. What a road trip it is! Quinn is a Dom and soon discovers that Con likes to give up a little control. They burn up the sheets.

It becomes far more than that and their connection grows while they both struggle against it. They each have pasts that color all of their reactions. I loved this story and happily, SE Jakes has been able to resume her writing and offer the sequel. I'm so ready for it! Very much recommended to military and mild BDSM stories.

ABSOLUTELY CAPTIVATING....

The relationship between Con and Quinn is remarkably captivating. I loved the way the Dom aspect played into the story without taking it over. I loved that both characters were magnificently written with strong personalities and lots of attitude. I liked the way this story was written in such a way that no one had to be saved or rescued but it was so interesting you couldn't put it down. I love SE Jakes writing style so much because she can put you in the room with her characters and make you feel all of their emotions. This is a very hot story that was a great cross country trip. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!!

This whole book felt stilted. I had trouble remembering whose POV I was reading, and that kept pulling me out of the story. The sex scenes were cut off, and I never grew to like or care about either MC. I didn't feel a connection between them or see any development of their relationship. They traveled together but didn't really do anything together. Con just kept hustling people playing pool and getting into fights, and Quinn was kind of boring. And I don't think they were in love. Maybe the story was just too short for things to actually develop, so the relationship felt forced?!

Hold The Line

I loved this book. SE Jake's showed that two people who had different upbringing can fall in love despite their personal problems. Quinn who is from a military family and is a tattoo artist and Con who is delta with no family to speak of got together because of Scott who is Quinn's brother and Con's brother in the military. These two fell in love along a two week trip that Scott planned for these two so they can get to Scott's wedding. I can not wait for the next book in this series. Erin

SE Jakes has once again proven why she is my favorite m/m author with this book. I loved the characters of Quinn and Con and how these two got together...it was a sexy two week trip that would change their lives. I really enjoyed the BDSM elements in their relationship which was hot as hell and the sex was scorching. I loved how Quinn was always there to provide a safe haven for Con when he was facing his demons. I also liked that Con trusted Quinn to submit to him. Another sexy story that I loved to read and the start of a great series in the making.

So far everything I have read from SE Jakes I have really enjoyed from the characters to the writing style and this was didn't disappoint either. I normally do not like books that have a BDSM theme to them, but luckily for me it was overwhelming and flowed well with the story, without being too much. Look forward to the next one in the series.

I loved the cross country trip! Throw in a guy in uniform and some hot sexy times and it's a good book for me. I liked the relationship between Quinn and Con. They each had things to overcome but they worked it out. The ending felt a little rushed trying to tie all the loose ends together but good story. Off to the next one!
