Alice in Murderland vol. 1 is a nice, exciting opener for Kaori Yuki's new fantasy series.

The story takes place in the modern day Japan, the heroine (named Stella in this English translation) is the adopted daughter of the most powerful and wealthy family in Japan; but she has difficulty remembering her own childhood. One day, during the Tea Party holds at her beloved older brother Zeno's 19 years old birthday, their mother suddenly announces to Stella and her eight siblings that in order to decide who will become the next family's leader, the nine teenagers need to fight each other to the death!

The 'fight to the death' aspect of the story does look a lot like The Hunger Games, but at least the kids who are in this deadly contest are all adoptive siblings and they must overcome kinship and affection when they are forced to kill each other, it adds tension and suspense to the struggle which I can appreciate.

But what truly makes the story outstanding is the homage to Alice in Wonderland, which is cleverly sewed into the deadly contest story line. Being a loyal Alice fan, Yuki did put a lot of effort to make those Alice elements interesting and fitting for her own story.

So far, we haven't seen so much of the characters' personalities and motivation, but the story itself is so much of a happy, funky, crazy, colorful ride that I am looking forward for the next volume.

YOU GUYS HAVE NO IDEA HOW EXCITED I AM ABOUT THIS.

EDIT (12/17/14): Reading the original JP edition now. It took all of my willpower not to automatically buy the first two volumes (volume 2 just came out).

EDIT (12/23/14): Done with this volume. DEFINITELY one of my fave picks for 2014! review to come!

It’s sometimes hard to follow and decipher what is going on in the story. I found the art style to be a little chaotic, especially for someone new to the manga scene (like me)
However, the story was intriguing and I will be continuing with the series.

So this manga starts off with a huge murder scene that makes no sense until later in the volume. Then we cut to our main character; Stella, in a classroom. She asks to leave suddenly because she had a family tea party to attend, one they have every month. Her classmates chalk it up to her being from the famous Kuonji family. They assume it's what all rich people do.

This tea party is special though, it's her eldest and favorite brother's nineteenth birthday. Their mother drops a huge bomb on them, only one of them can inherit the title as head of this powerful family. How to decide who wins? The last one standing. That's right, the adopted siblings will have to kill each other will only one remains. What a lovely family. Not.

No one likes this idea and Stella doesn't want to play this game but when Sid, the second oldest, kills Zeno, the oldest: Stella transforms into 'Bloody Alice' and kills his transformed state 'Jack the Ripper'. Their mother has been slipping something into their drinks every month, something that can allow them to live forever... if they keep taking at least once a month, or they will die. This also allows them to transform into this other person, thing. Not sure really.

Stella makes a pact with her mother to bring Zeno back to life and she'll win by killing all the others. Zeno will become her partner, the same way her mother kept their farther as her partner. This is the reason that each sibling was told bring their favorite person to the tea party.

So with Zeno back, though he's changed. He's not the brother she once loved anymore. That and the fact that she'd still freaking out over Blood Alice, makes things hard on her. There is a boy from the beginning that comes into play now though. Watching over Stella, helping her to see who really killed Sid's girlfriend. It wasn't Zeno, whom she thought might have eaten her.

Their family is kind of like vampires taking the life force from people, she thinks that what she did to Sid when she killed him. But Stella uses her brains and takes the advice of her new lookout and finds who really killed Sid's girlfriend and the is manga ends in a face off between the two. I can't wait to see who wins, though I'm sure it's Bloody Alice, Otherwise, there would be no series, makes sense to me.

I really like this manga, it's kind of confusing and I had to read it twice to fully grasp it but it's awesome. The action scenes are the best. I've been a fan of this mangka since Angel Sanctuary. I love the dark gothic feel she adds to everything. All the characters are clear cut and seem like their own selves which I love. All in all, I enjoyed this manga. I'd say give it a short. Did I mention it's hardcover!? Finally a hardcover manga! It's so beautiful!

Battle Royale meets Alice in Wonderland meets....Kill Bill? It sounds awesome, but it just felt confused. There was just too much going on at once and the whole plot feels a little convoluted. Rich psycho family, but then there are all these Wonderland references that seem out of place. Plus what is with all the incestual overtones?

Weird...even for Manga

What do you get when you mix Alice in Wonderland, the Hunger Games and manga together? Alice in Murderland. At first it came off as a really interesting if not completely psychotic story. The title says it all so you know there will be death and violence in this series. That being said the story drops you off right in the middle. There is little to no hand holding for the reader, no world building or character introductions.

Within the first few pages I began to wonder why Stella was a worthy main character. This isn't a constant theme and the story does fill you in as you continue. It does so through oddly placed flash back moments. The problem is that the first few pages are a flashback and with no context it's confusing at best. Later in the story the flashbacks are literally added in so that you understand the context of what someone is saying. It seems like the author is trying to do a "ah-ha!" moment or a "what a twist!" but since it's spoon fed to the reader it fails to make an impact.

[Minor spoiler warning]
Again there is little to no tension, all the children must kill each other to see who inherits the family fortune, power, and estate. However for Stella there is little to no motivation. Her 'special someone' is altered in the middle of the story to the point that he seems like an antagonist rather than a prince-in-distress. If he had stayed the same it really would have brought the tension up and caused Stella to question if she should kill her siblings or saver her brother/partner.
[End minor spoiler warning]

This story has a lot of fun elements. Unfortunately it's all spread too thin. At a price of $17.00 (before tax... yes it's a hard cover) I question if the story will be worth following to the end. It doesn't break any new ground but the art is nice.

Imagine Stella Kuonji's reaction when she shows up to her family's monthly Mad Tea Party, and her mother suddenly announces that she and her 8 other siblings now have to fight one another to the death?
Eh, close enough.

Reading the first part of the book, I couldn't help but think

It was quite confusing at first because all of this information was dumped onto you all at once. Stella's psycho mother, who sees herself as the Red Queen, suddenly dumps her "children" into this underground forest, and says that if one of the siblings don't die at least once a month, then each of the siblings most precious someone will be murdered *enter dramatic gasp*. Of course, Stella is confused, but after one of her brothers starts trying to kill her, this other Stella who calls her self Bloody Alice comes out.

Complete with blonde hair, blue eyes, and a thing for mass murder and guns, let's just say that this new Stella was much preferred. But wait! She doesn't want to become a murder! But how can she stop herself from turning into Alice when murdering all of her siblings is the only way to protect her precious brother Zeno and staying alive herself?

Opinion: I absolutely loved this! There has been countless Alice in Wonderland adaptations for both normal books and manga, but this is by far one of my favorites. Because come on, who doesn't love the occasional psycho-bad-ass chick every now and then? Though the information could have come across more subtly and less chaotically, I would have to say that that was the only con to this book. The art is really good, the characters are enjoyable, and there is plenty of suspense with sprinkle of gore to make this manga even more exciting.

Can't wait to get volume 2!

First of all, I absolutely love the friggin cover man like it's super colourful and badass. I think it's one of the most beautiful manga covers I've ever encountered. However secondly, the story was all over the shop like it made my head spin to truly understand what was going on. As someone said on here, the Stella character only becomes a brilliant character when she becomes her ego "Bloody Alice". The scenes when there's action going on were out of this world. As I said though, the plot was muddy for me unfortunately..

It's pretty disappointing for me to think this could have potential but unfortunately, it just didn't work out for me :/

"I'd like you children to now fight one another to the death! Until only one remains!"

Kaori Yuki is one of my favourite manga authors.

This is chaotic, bloody, gory, and twisted.

The Kuonji clan adopts children and has a tea party to see who survives this special tea. Those who survive become part of the clan, and now, before the eldest becomes a legal adult...

Mother makes a degree. Only one will inherit the secrets of the clan.

The Mad tea party begins...

11-book full series review

The premise: at one of her large family's monthly tea parties, Stella's mother makes a surprise announcement: in the next year, her 9 children (ranging in age from 5 to 19) will fight to the death, with the lone remaining child being the family heir. Happy slaughter! In the initial chaos that follows, Stella survives her first fight when her alter-ego, a murder-happy "Bloody Alice," emerges.

This is a Kaori Yuki title, so naturally it contains all of the following:
--Pretty art and often-frilly costume designs
--Forbidden incestuous love, which is sorta excused through plot reasons (in this case: they're adopted siblings)
-- emotionally-tortured characters
--sexual assault (see spoiler section below)
--murder

I happen to like Yuki's brand of pretty shoujo horror--there's not a lot like it it, at least not that's made its way to the States--so I wasn't surprised by anything that came up. The siblings are [mostly] horrified to find they're expected to kill each other, but they have no choice: not only is their adoptive family a rich and powerful entity with the means contain them, but they've also been ingesting small amounts of a magical substance during their monthly tea parties--and without continuing to do so, their now-dependent bodies will die.

As the volumes progress, we got more backstory: explaining why this heir-choosing murder frenzy has to take place, the secrets of their adoptive parents, how Stella came to have an alter-ego who is a completely separate person (with great weapons skills), and more.

Let's first focus on the good: it's enjoyable. If you can get through the first volume and enjoy it, you'll likely enjoy the rest of the series. It's not making any grand pretense at being fancy here. These are a bunch of messed-up kids with their own traumatic histories who have been told they have to murder their current family, and who then proceed to do so.

We get fights, yes, but we also get hidden backstories, pseudo-science mixed with magic, genuinely likable teenagers, genuinely unlikable teenagers you don't mind seeing die, double-crossing, triple-crossing, a ghostly dragon, big eyes and pretty dress designs.

The problems come with the story starts to get bogged down in all its lore. As readers, we have to deal with a lot of history: the individual histories of Stella, her beloved older brother, and her stalker-slash-protector Tsukito (as well as the other siblings, but these 3 are the ones you have to remember because they're plot-relevant). Then there's the family history--how these 9 kids became part of the family, why the family holds it own Hunger Games. Then there's the outside group dedicated to taking the family down--they've got their own history and reasons. Then there's Bloody Alice's history.

It's a lot, and while it's handled OK at first, the more these things become interwoven, the more convoluted everything becomes. It needed, quite frankly, another 2 volumes at a minimum to sort things out.

The last volume is a mess. There, I said it. Even with everything that was going on, if the last volume could've taken them all and ironed everything out to be a decent conclusion, I'd give the series 4 stars. But in volume 11, there's SO MUCH going on, it feels like Yuki had been given a deadline and suddenly had to throw everything together in one finale.

It's, uh. It's a lot. Like I said, it really needed like 2 full more volumes to adequately explain things.

Now, about that sexual assault.

This is fun.

Alice in wonderland + Battle Royal (I guess)
Love this mix. 😂

I'm a big fan of Kaori Yuki's artstyle. It's gorgeous!
but her stories are all so dark, I love it 😁😍
despite the dark theme, it also got a good amount of humour. Some interactions are hilariously funny.

I like our main characters.
Zeno's character design immediately reminded me of Lucifer from Angel Sanctuary. 🤯
Stella/Bloody Alice is smart, cool, and badass 😂
Tsukito is a bit weird and weak, but I think his awesome too (or will be)

It's also interesting how every kid in this house is associated with a famous fairytale/urban legend figure.

I would have prefered the English version over the German, but all English editions were too expensive 🙈 wasn't worth my money🥴

So let me start off by saying that Kaori Yuki is my favorite mangaka hands down. I love everything she's written and I've never found a mangaka that inspires me and takes me on an emotional roller coaster in as many ways as Kaori Yuki does. So when I saw that she had a new series and that it was coming to the USA I was dying from excitement. After finally having it in my hands, I can promise you it does not disappoint.

While this isn't my favorite story from Kaori Yuki, it's definitely a fantastic read (as you can see by the five stars I gave it). First and foremost it is NOT a retelling of Alice in Wonderland. It has a lot of elements from Alice in Wonderland, but it is not a retelling. It features a young girl named Stella and her nine brothers and sisters, who are involved in a game of death. Their mother pitted them against one another; the nine of them must slaughter each other in order to inherit the family fortune.

It's an exciting story with a lot of action and a lot of fun characters. In typical Kaori Yuki fashion it's full of beautiful characters, a bit of gore, humorous moments, and a dark, compelling story. There are supernatural elements as well that take the story to an entirely new level.

I adore Kaori Yuki more than anything and I'm so happy to a new story from her in my hands. I can't wait for the next volumes and to continue on with the story!

Kaoru Yuki once again does that thing she does so well - combine fairy tale elements with gorgeous art and unbelievably bloody violence!
..... and somehow it was just really boring....
Oh look, this outrageously rich family has "family tea parties" monthly and all the many kids are actually adopted, oh and BTW, lets have a massive "Battle Royale" now as the 'children' are given a year to murder each other to see who will inherit the vast family fortune

Maybe if encountered this series 5 years ago before got completely worn out on this trope it would have been more interesting?

My favourite artist has a new series I did not know about? It is gory, bloody and completely crazy? Sign me up. It's so good. I have read Godchild as a kid and somehow during one of our many moves, my copies got lost. I'm seriously considering getting them again^^
But as long as I have to wait for it, I read this.
It's everything I ever want from Kaori Yuki. Blood, gore, weapons and craziness. Give me more.

I'm probably getting part 3 to 7 tomorrow :-D Luckily, I have volume 2 already at home with me *.*

(2.5/5) I LOVE creative interpretations of Alice In Wonderland. This one falls a little short for me because I felt I was supposed to understand the world already. I know this is book 1, I still felt like the balance of me learning the world, motives and characters were either too sudden or not explained well enough. An entertaining read though the depth wasnt there.
