A teen becomes entangled with the gods of Mount Olympus when one of them falls in love with her. Some gods give her magical gifts. Others try to kill her.
Follow Therese through her adventures in all six books of the complete Gatekeeper's Saga.
Eva Pohler is a USA Today bestselling author of over forty novels in multiple genres, including mysteries, thrillers, and young adult paranormal romance based. Her books have been described as "addictive" and "sure to thrill"--Kirkus Reviews.
Pohler is very detailed in her writing. Everything is precisely worded to convey a specific thought, feeling, or image. Each and every word seems to have been carefully chosen to build a cohesive overall picture. Everything is vivid and extremely well laid out. She creates a world that you can imagine yourself walking into. I love the fact that this story is mythologically accurate. I also like the fact that Pohler includes a variety of Greek gods in her writing, rather than simply using the Olympiad as so many authors attempting to write about Greek mythology do. Pohler manages to remain mythologically accurate while telling a completely unique and one of a kind tale. I also appreciate the differentiation in writing style between Earth and Olympus. Everything on Olympus is much larger and more elaborate than Earth, as it should be. Her writing also sports an intensity rarely seen in a YA novel, while also giving you some very good laughs. She works her magic with the same smooth, approachable writing style that we’ve come to know and love to create a work of creative brilliance. There is an air of mystery and suspense that winds its way through this tale. Pohler combines intense emotional scenes with action packed sequences to always keep you on your toes.
I appreciate that Pohler attacked some very difficult topics in this series. Not only does she entertain us throughout, but loss, drugs, sex, and abuse are brought up in ways that make them approachable and open them up for conversation. These can be very difficult subjects to even think about, but Pohler tackles them and winds them into her phenomenal tale.
The characters in this novel are quite well developed. You may not know their entire life histories, but you do get to know everything that is pertinent to the story and to let you get to know the characters. It was very refreshing to read a story by an author who can differentiate between necessary development to create a well-developed character, and giving an entire life history that slows down the storyline because it isn’t actually relevant to the plot. The character development continues with leaps and bounds throughout the series. Overall, her character development is unique in that the characters, regardless of their age, learn and admit things about themselves as we learn them. Self-growth and realisation is a never-ending process in this story.
I am thoroughly in love with this box set and this series. The mythology is sound, as is the writing. As a whole, this story was informative, enlightening, and a pleasure to read. I laughed, I cried, I enjoyed. It’s a story that parents and teens alike will love.
This is the complete set of Eva Pohler's Gatekeeper's saga. I have read each one in the series, and I have loved them all. It's a great new twist on Greek gods in a modern day world. We see the story begin with Therese as a teenager. She's mourning the loss of her parents in a car accident in which they are all involved in. Amid the accident, she has an in between life and death moment in which she meets Thanatos, the god of death. Than is immediately intrigued with her because no one has ever really shown him any sort of affection, let alone a mere human. No living mortal can be in his presence without life draining affects. He makes a deal to partially forgo his powers so that he can spend time with the girl that has captivated him. The two end up falling for each other and face several challenges along the way of trying to make their relationship work. Some of the gods are friends, and others are jealous or worried that Therese and Than's relationship will cause future problems for them. This sparks a division among them and battle lines are drawn. Each action packed book brings forth a new obstacle for the couple to overcome. Alliances will be made, conflict abounds, and relationships will be put to the test. If you like mythology, you will love this saga! Just make sure you set aside plenty of time when you start with the series, because you won't want to stop reading until you've finished the whole set.
I am a huge fan of this series and I can tell you that this box set is an amazing deal. I have grown to know and love all of the characters in this series. I feel like I'm reading about close friends since I'm emotionally invested in this series. I don't want to give any spoilers but I can tell you that the way Ms. Pohler pulled everything together to come up with a concise, believable, and happy ending is amazing. The story in each book flowed smoothly and moved quickly and there were several twists and turns that I wasn't expecting. I really loved this series and I definitely recommend it.
I loved the series! I'm heartbroken and happy we've got the final book. By happy I mean we get to find out what happens. Rowling introduced me to magic and Eva introduced me to Indie authors. :) Some I love others well but all unique. Eva is a favorite for sure! When Therese Mills parents die in a car accident her life becomes entangled with the gods. This is one of my favorite series of Eva's She has a vivid way of putting you under her spell making unforgettable characters and have you fall in love with them. I love how in suspense she keeps you. Thank you Eva for giving me something fun exciting and to get obsessed over again. Everything I look for in a book.
This is by far my favorite series to date. These beloved characters will stick with you for years. I love each and every one of them, you will even develop a soft spot for the villians. The series is wrapped up beautifully in the end, and will leave you content, and filled with peace some novels don't provide. All in all, I can say I definitely would have paid more than asking price for this gem!
This series is definitely my favorite EVER!!! It is happy and sad at the same time. It leaves you crying tears of happiness and understanding. Therese goes though happiness and heartbroken times, peace, and war between the gods. Going through all this and holding herself apiece isn't easy, and I really learned from this. It helped me persevere for what I want, helped me be brave, and so on. The ending leaves me wishing for another, and I highly recommend this!!!
Gatekeeper's Son In books there are several things I look at when buying and extras that push me over the edge to quickly buy. First cover is most important that is the first thing a reader sees. Mrs. Pohler nailed the cover it is simple not over the top but very beautiful. One thing I notice is lately covers have the same models and it is refreshing to see new faces. Next I look to see if its a paranormal book this one is a special plus, plus it is paranormal romance with my favorite topic Mythology. You can never go wrong writing mythology. The author stayed within the realms of mythology without taking too much liberties and messing with the legends. The story was so full of adventure you couldn't help but keep turning the pages without stopping. The characters were well developed. You couldn't help but feel the saddness when Theresa lost her parents. Then to go through what she thought was a dream. The interaction between the characters only enhanced this story. So if you love romance, mythology, YA, and adventure this is your series. I cant wait to read the next book.
The Gatekeeper's Challenge This was a great follow up to book 1 The Gatekeepers Son. Therese and Thantos are like ying and yang to one another giving balance between light and death beautifully. I've always enjoyed reading anything based on Greek mythology but when you add a modern twist that's a plus in my books. In my journey through the saga I have thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it to readers of all ages. I also loved the consistency of each one of the covers. I received a complimentary copy in exchange for a honest and unbiased opinion.
The Gatekeeper's Daughter I loved the smooth transition from book 2 The Gatekeepers Challenge. Ares is at it again. He never seems satisfied with anything and seems to always like to make all the rules. This is definitely a book that you can't or want to put down. The author keeps you help hostage from page one till the end. Hades even jumps in to try and help Therese as much as he can. I highly recommend this for readers of all ages. I received a complimentary copy in exchange for a honest and unbiased opinion.
The Gatekeeper's House: This author knows how to suck the reader into her stories. The flow from three to four was seamless and this has been the consistency throughout the series. The descriptions and settings really create such vivid pictures in the mind if the readers. If you love mythology, romance, suspense this is definitely the series for you. Each one complements and enhances previous book. I highly recommend this for readers of all ages. I received a complimentary copy in exchange for a honest and unbiased opinion.
The Gatekeeper's Secret This has been such a fantastic series. Seamless transitions between each book but enough drama to entice the readers to patiently wait for next book. I have grown to love the many different quests and characters new and reoccurring. The important thing is the author doesn't assume everyone knows what each God and goddess is in charge of she provides alittle background into them. Each book is a story to be reckoned with really recommend reading in order they are intended. I highly recommend this for readers of all ages. I received a complimentary copy in exchange for a honest and unbiased opinion.
This series is great. It has a great combination of greek mythology, romance and suspense. I highly recommend reading this series as you will not be disappointed.
The Gatekeeper's Sons: I am a huge fan of Greek Mythology so when I stumbled upon this book I had to check it out to see what it was all about....WWWWEEEELLLL let me tell you that I am so happy that I did! I love how Eva combines modern day with that of the Greek Gods. The Characters, Theresa andare so great together and make such a great storyline but then you have the added twist of Than's twin Hip! Eva does a great job at describing the people, surroundings and events.
The Gatekeeper's Challenge: Therese has been away from Than for almost a year and life hasn't been easy. Than has however been trying to find a way to make Therese a god without going against the promise he made to the God's. In the grand scheme of things Hades has agreed to help in making her a god if she completes a series of challenges that basically Therese is destined to fail.
This book picks up where book 1 left off and I have to say that I am absolutely loving this series!! I feel in love with Therese and Than in the first book and their struggle to be together. This book is a continuation of their strength together and their will to find a way to be together forever!
The Gatekeeper's Daughter: Book 2 left off with Therese finally becoming a god and you would think life would be good for her and Than..nope now she must find her purpose and if she doesn't she will become mortal again. Then to top this off Ares is after her...life as a god just isn't easy LOL
I absolutely love this series and as it goes on I am loving them even more. Just like the previous two books I didn't want to stop reading. I need to find out what will happen to Therese and Than as well as what those pesky and not so pesky gods would do. I absolutely love the different personalities of the gods and how well Eva combines them into the modern world.
The Gatekeeper's House: Book 4 picks right up where book 3 left off and the author does such a great job of making the story flow you don't feel like you're on a new book :) There is a great combination of greek mythology, romance, and on the edge of your seat suspense you are going to fall in love with the story, characters and the author! A great read in an already great series!
The Gatekeeper's Secret: This is the fifth book of the series and once again Eva didn't disappoint. Therese and Than are planning to get married and Pete is desperately trying to tell her something. When she doesn't answer him, he goes to the one who he feels could help Zeus (we all know this is not good). This then sets off another series of events that test Therese and her desire to make everything right.
Eva once again writes a great book
The Gatekeeper's Promise: This is the final book in the series and let me tell you I was enthralled with the story right from the start. There was so much that was going on in this book both with the main characters and the gods. Therese and Than are expecting their twins and there is still a "war" going on amongst the gods then to top it off, Jen is pulled into it.
I loved how the story progressed and how it ended, I just hope there is more to come (perhaps a spinoff with Hip and Jen) :)
Look out Percy Jackson, Therese has a story to tell as well!!!
Absolutely one of the most enjoyable series I have ever read!!! It covers many issues like death, abuse, and so much more, while sticking to the Greek element. The mythology is to die for, and it sheds new light on some of the gods who haven't gotten the love and respect they deserve in the past in my opinion. There is never a dull moment, and if you take this adventure with Therese, I promise you won't regret it!!! Do yourself a favor, and give these a read!
Confess I did struggle with some books in this set - I liked the basic idea, which is why I bought the box after reading the first one in a bundle. The main character alternates between being old way beyond her years, and being an absolutely typical teenager - and its those latter times which grate. Was intriguing to read Gods which I've read about almost as abstracts in legends portrayed with very human characteristics: jealousy, spitefulness, and humour. Anyway - overall just made it to a 3 stars, for originality and some clever "now get out of that" moments - a good quick holiday read
This is an incredible YA series for anyone who loves Greek mythology! I enjoyed the way Eva brought back the mythology and not only has some of the history of the gods but also created new tales for them. There are many challenges in each book, not only for Kira but the others as well. I have also reviewed each book individually, but once you pick up the first book you will want to read them all! Each one brings more excitement to the story, and none of them leave you disappointed!
This is one of my favorite series! I love Greek Mythology anyway, But Eva puts her take on what could have happened. Yet she also stays very true to each character and you can tell she put a lot of research in when she wrote these books. There is Love, Danger, Death, and much more. She can captivate you with her writing. This is a must read series. DO NOT PASS THIS SERIES UP!!!! BUY IT NOW, TRUST ME!!!!!
When I saw this box set I had to have it!!!! I read the first book and fell in love! Reading Thanatoes and Hypnos story unfold with Therese and Jen is fabulous...I know the main characters are suppose to be Than and Therese but Hip and Jen are a HUGE part of the stories too....Love that Greek mythology was the focal point of these books!!!! Awesome books to have!!!
There are no words to describe how much I absolutely loved this series! I was never, and I mean NEVER a fan of mythology.....until I came across the works of Eva Pohler. The modern day twists and turns on the gods and goddesses actually kept me interested and entertained all through the series, in ways my teachers couldn't, lol. The romance, action and suspense didn't hurt either!
This series is amazing. No one has ever caught my attention with greek mythology the way that Eva has. I love to read about all of the gods. But a love story between a god and a human was outstanding. I want to read more. Hopefully in the future Hip will get his own true love story the way that Than did. Thank you again Eva for bringing sure amazing stories to the world.
Amazing series that I highly recommend to all book lovers. A great way to spend an afternoon because that's all the time you'll need to read the whole thing because they are so wonderful you won't want to put it down until you are done.
I LOVE this series!! Eva's writing style takes you right along on all of the missions, you feel every uplifting moment and each heartbreaking tear. This is a set that anyone can read from young teen to adult and I suggest you do!!! Love, love, love!!! ~Dowie
This is an amazing series for everyone who like Greek Mythology. The characters are amazing and the storyline is awesome. It has love to action and everything in between. This is a must read series!
Such a wonderful love story with all the twists and tyraids you would come to expect from the Gods and Goddesses. After reading this series I would recommend that everyone read it. Eva, thank you.
Overall I enjoyed the series; some books were better than others, 1st and 4th left me a bit disappointed (a bit too much teen romance and drama for my taste) but not so much that I stopped reading. Still, an easy, fun read and an interesting take on Hades and his family in the underworld!
These book goes along with the quote "I decided reading all night was better than being mentally present today." One day and all six were read. That good now I'm going to bed.
I really enjoyed The Gatekeeper's Saga box set. Each book in the series got better and better. Eva Pohler is a new author to me. I am glad I started reading her books.
--Summery The Gatekeepers Saga is a series made up of 6 books which all follow the story of a girl called Therese who has a love of animals and whose parents die at the start of the first book. (Not a spoiler that's literally the start!) Her and her parents get involved in a shooting whilst in the car, which plunges into the water and kills both her parents. While in the place between life, dreams and death she meets Thanatos and Hypnos the gods of death and sleep. The story centers around Therese's and Than's love story and how this mortal teenage girl gets mixed up in all the drama of the gods. The books rely heavily on Greek mythology and they portray a unique, yet accurate Greek gods story. I love how closely and well done she weaves the Greek mythology and her own story together to create a solid world with is entertaining but teaches you much about this mythology. I have personally always loved Greek mythology and I found that I loved this portrayal. I love it when books are not only thoroughly entertaining, but when they teach you and help you learn along the way. It's the best most fun way to learn and I love Eva Pohler's way of teaching you about the gods through this story. Through the course of the story you have fantastical magical elements, but a real sense of realism and life. I loved how the attitude towards death were portrayed and how the themes really have a real punch to them. Throughout all six books, I was entertained and eager to know what was to happen next. With all six books, I thought the standard of story and writing were all equal and the quality did not decline, which is a worry for such a long book series; which is why I decided to review the saga as a whole rather than the individual books.
Long Review Ahead --Contains Very Mild Spoilers--
--Writing The writing in this story was smooth and nice to read. It was intelligently written and you could tell by the authors writing that she knew what she was talking about and was comprehensive in her facts and ability to re-tell written tales. The perspective of Therese was simply written and I like a character with a smooth voice who sounds realistic and... well mortal. The books did tend to get a tad confusing at times with all the names, terms and locations from the Greek mythology's and at times the text could be very wordy. Many Greek god names are similar and its easy to get a little confused in my mind. But I think will the complexity of the story and myth, is was a given to get a little lost at times and I'm glad Eva didn't 'dumb' down the story for our easy benefit. It almost made it an achievement to get through and understand large chunks of information and in fact it was satisfying to feel like I was truly learning an intelligent story. In later books the writing changes slightly to include other character perspectives. I notice many YA books tend to do that later in their story's but I was pleased it happened in this particular series. The addition of the other viewpoints added more to the story and the other angles made for an interesting read to remain interesting. I love how Eva slotted the perspectives over one another and switched characters in the moment. This can be a challenge for many authors but I think Eva did is very successfully and I loved being in the heads of other characters. I always knew pretty much who's head I was in, and the voices were unique enough for them all to stand separate from one another. She made you understand all the views and goings on together which kept it an interesting read and broke up the text quite nicely. I loved how she wrote the fantastical elements such as god travel and the locations such as mount olympus. I felt like she explained simply the magic and allowed the reader to travel the world and more with her.
--Characters I loved many of the diverse characters in this story and I loved Eva's interpretation of the gods. Therese as a main character was interesting and relatable. She was human and sweet and flawed and very easy to relate to as a person. Her love of animals and life made her very deep and her willingness to face all that she did made me admire her whilst reading her. Thanatos was a joy of a love interest. I feel like Eva dodged the 'bad boy' bullet with this one and I love that she did. Than being the god of death made for an interesting read, but his character really shone. He was sweet and thoughtful and very sensible. I liked that and understood why Therese loved Than's gentle nature, which made for a great contrast and irony considering he is the god of death. It really showed death is a deep light and Than as a character was a pleasure to read. I'm so not into the 'bad boy's' being swoon worthy and Than's thoughtful character was a brilliant change. As for the cast of side characters there were the mortals in Therese's life and the gods. I think the mortal characters were all very real, relatable and had a great purpose in Therese's story. The gods, as I said, were portrayed in a way I loved. Personally I loved how Eva showed each of them. From the high profile gods like Hades, Poisiden, Aphrodite and Ares to the lower profile characters they all were written with such finesse and I agree with her portrayal. The way she weaved their histories into the story worked so well and flowed easily into the plot. In particular I loved Hades portrayal, as Hades is in most reincarnations, the baddie. But the Hades here was such a different take and I loved it. He wasn't the lovey-dovey type but he was gentle, intelligent and not out to kill people like in other stories. My other favorite was Aphrodite because she was so gentle and loving, how can you not love her character? I came to like and become connected to the characters so easily and loved each of their journeys.
--Plot The plot which spanned out through six books never lost it's momentum and I'm pleased to say had very little 'filler' content. I never felt like the plot was dragged out or unnecessary and the plot was action driven from start to finish. There were many twists and turns that had me guessing and the plot was not predictable or anything I've really read before. I didn't always agree with certain plot points, but overall I loved the direction the story took. There was plenty of struggle for the characters but not on an unrealistic scale and with the magic of the gods had many issues and conflicts possible and many crazy solutions too. I wasn't a fan of how the last book ended and concluded the series, but in no way did it leave me angry, disappointed or frustrated with the ending. I think that's what made this long series so great. It's constant entertainment factor through six books (a long run) and at no point did I feel things had gotten silly, unrealistic or 'too convenient'. The dramatic events really had me feeling along with the characters and siding with certain characters.
--Overall Overall I loved this whole series and it was a joy to read. From factual learning of the gods through an entertaining medium, characters that were really grounded and deep, and a plot that never lost it's excitement for me; I loved it from start to finish. The arc of the plot and characters really evolved and I felt the story progressed so naturally and with a change of situation with each development. I loved how no characters felt cliche or annoying or like I've read them many times before. Eva avoided so many tropes like love triangles, (which I thought there would be from the cover.. so glad because the cover is terrible) bad boys and what death was all about. I would recommend this read to anyone interested in new takes on Greek mythology and even those who just love a good romance and action without all the lengthy love scenes. It was a long series to get through and those who get bored by stories easily or have little patience for long stories probably wouldn't enjoy this book. This book is not on my all time favorite series list but none the less I'm so happy I read it and may re-read it in the future (if I get the time!). I will remember this book for a long time and I recommend more people should give this book a go. It was just so, so good!
Thantanos, god of death, twin son of Hades and Persephone, had only known the isolating monotony of his purpose. To bring the souls of the dead to the Underworld. Suddenly, he comes into contact with a young girl who is dying, and she makes such an impression on him, that he can never forget her. She's saved from death, But Than Still can't forget her. Her beauty and sweetness, inside and out. Here starts the first book in this incredible collection, which I couldn't stop reading! I'd gotten and read the first two books before and then got this set. I devoured it in 24hrs!
I've studied Greek mythology since I was 6 & spent 2 months in Greece, visiting historical sites & museums. This author has Very accurately and Realistically brought not only the Entire Greek Pantheon to life, but Many others that exist in Greek mythology. The personalities are so dynamic and on point and So incredibly interesting!
This was a Fantastic read! I'm Definitely moving on to the spin offs!
I just finishes The Gatekeeper's Saga boxset. If you love greek mythology and want a totally different view of the Gods and Goddess this the series for you. Eva brings a totally new twist to the brothers and sisters. She even bring in their children which isn't done that often if at all. You'll get a feeling that you are back in that time frame with the Gods and Goddesses. The saga has many twist and turns with tons of surprise as you go along reading. Once you start this saga you won't want to stop for anything not even sleep. This is my second series from Ms. Pohler and I am hooked on this amazing indie author.
The author left no stone unturned. Every oath fulfilled. The stories actually frustrated me I wanted fairy tale endings but instead got something close to reality. Worth the read.
