“There is a short list of obligatory books you read when you’re pregnant, and then there are those you read because they stir your soul. Dear Babies, with all of its warmth and endearing wisdom, is a standout among the latter.” —Bethany Meyer, “The Huffington Post” Contributor . . . When Amy Denby found out she was pregnant with twins after two years of fertility treatments, she handled her overwhelming emotions the way any writer (former entertainment editor of Seventeen and More magazines) and self-respecting Carrie Bradshaw-wannabe would: She began writing to her unborn children. What unfolded is “Dear Babies, Crazy Life, Simply Explained,” a blog of snappy letters that captured readers’ hearts for being so tender and raw--and laugh-out-loud funny. Here as a book, “Dear Babies” offers a collection of stand-out entries that are part life lessons, part side-splitting anecdotes mixed with blush-worthy confessions, that paints the most intimate and entertaining portrait of pregnancy today. Any expecting woman will laugh, cry, smile, and nod in agreement as she reads, while any person, pregnant or not, will find in these pages an inspiring story about life and what it means to be growing. About beginnings, endings and what we think we know about the elusive in-between.
Amy Denby is a former entertainment editor of “Seventeen” and “More” magazines where she wrote book and movie reviews. She was also a staff copywriter and photography producer for J.Crew. She has extensive knowledge of pop culture and movie quotes, which makes her either a lot of fun or incredibly annoying to sit next to at dinner parties. Luckily, as a mom to five-year-old twins, she doesn't go to many dinner parties, so that takes care of that.
Dear Babies: Crazy Life, Simply Explained by Amy Denby is not your typical parenting book. It is a book of letters to Amys babies. Every time Amy experiences something new she writes them a funny and honest letter. The letters follow the whole ten months she is pregnant, and often compares her experiences to different movies.
I identified with Amy in Dear Babies: Crazy Life, Simply Explained because I am also the immature one in my relationship. A lot of what she writes to the babies, I have thought as well. Just like Amy, the excitement in my life stopped when I found out I was pregnant. It came to a complete halt, and there it remains. Amy puts a very humorous spin on the things that she experiences. My personal favorite was the December 1st letter, after the babies were born. The letter brought back my own memories of having a C-section and hearing the baby scream for the first time. Amy has a gift at explaining the details of her experiences to the readers. It was almost like I was right there with her. I also loved that she told the babies the size they were each time she wrote to them. Mostly comparing them to fruits and vegetables.
I really enjoyed this book. I wish this book was around when I was pregnant. When I first saw the book I thought it was going to be a parenting advice book, but it was not. Yet I still gained knowledge from it. Amy writes You want to leave a trail you can be proud of. This is something that I could not agree more with. I recommend Dear Babies: Crazy Life, Simply Explained for anyone who is or has been pregnant.
It is a book that you can read In digestible chinks in between feedings in the middle of the night. You will definitely snort through your nose laughing. Don't wake the baby!
