Jack is a very curious little boy and a scientist. He will do anything to get out of the swimming carnival, as he has never bothered to go for lessons and is in the bubble blowing competition for non-swimmers. Jack spends his afternoons with Mrs Thomas, as he is an only child and always 'experimenting.'Things normally go wrong when he is allowed to think too much and experiment on his own. I digress - Mrs Thomas grows all sorts of tomato's in her garden and loves to make tomato pickles and chutneys out of them. Jack helps her clean out her kitchen cupboards and finds a very old jar of tomato pickle, which Mrs Thomas said would be very explosive when opened. Has Jack found out a way to get out of the swimming carnival? I loved the book, and the antics of what a little boy gets up with a little bit of imagination.
