Full of the menace of long-hidden secrets  and the darkness of the human heart, I'll Be Watching You is a chilling tour de force  by Victoria Gotti, author of the critically acclaimed legal thriller The Senator's Daughter.

Rose Miller is a best-selling novelist with a seemingly perfect a devoted and wealthy husband with his eye on a gubernatorial nomination, a splendid country mansion, and an adorable daughter. But Rose has something else too--a shadowy stalker who sends her blood red roses with threatening notes that hint at Rose's hidden past . . . a life she thought she had buried forever.

Who is stalking Rose? Nearly everyone is a suspect. It could be Dario, her ruthless and controlling publicist, whose crush on Rose is getting a little out of hand. Or Dimitri, her devilishly handsome ex-lover, now a millionaire hotel baron with his own reasons for wanting revenge. Or even her own father-in-law, James Miller, a sinister man who will stop at nothing to protect his family's secrets.

Terrified, Rose enlists the help of a veteran detective, John Falcone, who begins to uncover a shocking pattern of threats and violence, all of which seem to center around the beautiful celebrity author and her powerful, wealthy family. When Rose's best friend is murdered in a bizarre ritual drawn from a scene in one of Rose's own novels, Falcone's suspicions about her "perfect life" become even deeper, and the terror Rose thought she could hide begins to spin out of control.

Despite her desperate efforts to protect herself and her innocent daughter, Alexis, Rose finds herself being pulled deeper and deeper into a web of old hatreds and new rivalries that threaten first her happiness, then her life.

Write what you know. And certainly Victoria Gotti, daughter of John Gotti of the Gambino crime family fame, novelist and media personality, knows about what she writes. But in this novel, at least, the underworld crime lords are not so bad; it is the district attorney and the super wealthy who are corrupt. And the super wealthy lead lives that even Donald Trump would envy. Every other page is littered with upscale brand names.

On the positive side, Gotti has woven an intricate plot full of twists and turns, deceit and outright lies. Most of the main characters are related in one way or another to each other. The scion of the Miller family, James, an uber rich lawyer and power broker, fathered two sons - one legitimate, Evan, and one not, Dimitri. For reasons unexplained, James hates Dimitri but keeps him on as a stable boy in his Long Island estate. Evan, the apple of James’ eye, is also a successful lawyer with gubernatorial aspirations.

"A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” When she was Rose Calvetti, she was the poor orphan of the caretakers of the Miller estate. After her parents’ death, the Millers kept Rose on as a servant. As teenagers growing up in the same home, both half brothers fell in love with Rose. In fact, most of the men in this mystery fall madly in love with Rose, mad being the operant word. When Rose’s uncle tries to rape her, the uncle is killed. Dimitri takes the fall and is sent to prison for six years. While Dimitri is Rose’s first love, she discovers that she is pregnant with Dimitri’s child, and she marries Evan. James also thinks that Rose is unworthy of his son. Evan provides a life of untold luxury, and Rose becomes a successful mystery writer. Into this idyllic life, Rose finds that she has a stalker with murderous intent. A serial killer has been following the plots in Rose’s novels, with Rose being the next intended victim. Upon his release from prison, Dimitri re-enters her life as an ulta successful business tycoon.

On the downside, this is a work of pure fantasy. As in the chick lit genre, I half expected the cover to portray a bare-chested Dimitri with Rose clinging to his side and Evan brooding in the background. Despite its intricate construction, much of the plot makes no logical sense. For an accomplished mystery writer, Rose acts like a complete idiot. After 12 years of marriage, Rose has several assignations with Dimitri, despite it jeopardizing her marriage, her career and her husband’s gubernatorial aspirations. And Dimitri could potentially be the real serial killer. Dimitri, an ex-con, has somehow legitimately amassed a fortune in the few short years after his release from prison. The lifestyles of these rich and famous people are beyond belief. While exciting, the ending revealing the true killer is preposterous.

This was just...so bad.

Rose Miller has got to be the worst case of mary-sue, wattpad heroine I've ever read. How a woman this dumb could get so far in life was honestly astounding. I couldn't buy into her innocent shtick at all, and honestly the story would've been much more interesting if she had been the gold-digging social-climber everyone made her out to be.

This book was laden with plot holes. By the 70% mark, I was skipping paragraphs just trying to get to the end, and by the 85% mark, I just gave up and began skipping entire pages.

I knew I wouldn't be able to figure out who the stalker was since I was barely paying attention, but turns out I didn't need to worry about missing vital clues because the 'twist' was pulled from nowhere! :)

Not my best read! Plot was manipulated in order to fit the story. Didn't flow naturally. A new author for me and I won't try another by her for a while.
