Ben and his family are slaves to Mister Tom until they plan a daring escape in the middle of the night and go south to Florida, to Indian territory. They have a long and dangerous journey ahead. But maybe among the Seminoles, they will find a place of their own—and freedom. “History and drama blend seamlessly in this advanced chapter book.” —The Horn Book Magazine Kim Siegelson was the 2000 Georgia Author of the Year for Children’s Literature. She won a Coretta Scott King Award for In the Time of the Drums.
Too many people, readers, associate escaped slaves with following the drinking gourd to the north. Stories/books of slaves heading to Florida and joining the Seminole Indians seem to be fewer. This book has the family heading and succeeding with their journey south and then west. While it is from 2000, this book presents a good addition to books about slavery.
Siegelson includes an author's note about the Seminole connection to slavery.
