Clemmie is a spotted turtle, who longs for a faraway island where apples and angleworms abound. Sadly, Clemmie’s mom disappeared before he could learn to swim. Orphaned and alone, Clemmie spends all of his time searching for food, and hiding from the wicked red fox that’s always skulking near.
John R. Cobb (1965-present) is a proud Mainer with a great affection for the woods and waters. John is a U.S. Army veteran and has worked in various technology fields for over forty years, including data networking, electrical, and telecommunications.
Recently, John retired as an IT Department Supervisor and IT Infrastructure Analyst. Sadly, John’s beloved wife of thirty years, Heidi, passed away before they could enjoy their post-retirement life. John still resides in Maine with his son, Johnny, and his beagle, Cookie.
Inspired by renown authors like Alan Dean Foster, Ray Bradbury, Richard Matheson, and Stephen King, John’s preferred genres are crime, fantasy, mystery, sci-fi, and supernatural.
Although John loved to write fiction during his school years, he didn’t start writing seriously until he was well into adulthood.
John’s published works:
Judith: A Quoddy Tale (March 2012) Tales of the Cemetery Trees (July 2013) A Turtle Tale (November 2014) Tale of the Raptor Men (May 2022) Tales of the Cemetery Trees (March 2026)
The illustrations in this picture book are a delight, from spotted turtle smelling dandelion seeds to scary red-furred fox. Meanwhile the text flows, written in straight-forward paragraphs, offers lots of pleasing internal rhymes. A slightly unbalanced rhythm is perfect for a tale of an unbalanced world where “Because his species is endangered, Clemmie is surrounded by lots of strangers.”
But man isn’t the only danger in this tale of nature. “Clemmie’s mom the fox did kill,” so Clemmie lives in fear. Eating bugs with morsels of meat, and fishing for bruised and battered applies, he waits for his happy ending with lighter brighter images of spring and summer to come.
A Turtle Tale is a fun short story which teaches children about nature in a pleasingly honest way. The illustrations, from season to season, will keep pre-readers happily satisfied.

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one.
A very awesome book cover, great colored pictures & proper font & writing style. A very well written children’s turtle adventure story book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great children’s turtle adventure movie, an animated cartoon, or better yet a mini TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.

This is a lovely tale, beautifully illustrated, about clemmie a young orphaned turtle. His mum was killed by the fox before she could teach him to swim. He is sad and lonely and you really feel for him!
I thoroughly enjoy reading these type of children books, for they always teach my children an important life lesson in a simple and easy way that they can understand. It's important for children today to have morals, and the only way that they will obtain them is if they are taught from a young age.
