A SENSATIONAL STAND-ALONE HORSE ROMANCE AND THRILLER FROM THE BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF THE ONE DOLLAR HORSE SERIES
A girl on the run from the law When Alexandra Blakewood is sent to a US boot camp for out-of-control teenagers, she has only one thought in mind: escape. It seems impossible until she meets Scout, a palomino mustang as wild as she is…
A boy on a mission to save a life Hard times force Will Greyton to give up on his dreams and face losing the Arab mare he loves. Then his dad falls ill. An operation might save him but there’s no way to pay for it. Until Will hears about The Glory, a race with a $250,000 purse.
A race they both have to win. A deadly 1,200 mile endurance challenge across the American West. Can Will and Alex survive it without losing their lives or hearts?
Lauren St John grew up on a farm and game reserve in Africa, the inspiration for her acclaimed memoir, Rainbow's End, and her award-winning White Giraffe series for children. Dead Man's Cove, the first in her Laura Marlin mystery series, won the Blue Peter Book of the Year Award in 2011. Her bestselling One Dollar Horse trilogy for teenagers was followed by The Glory, a breathtaking YA adventure and romance about a long distance horse race across the American West. Formerly a sports and music journalist, Lauren is the author of Seve and Hardcore Troubador: the Life & Near Death of Steve Earle, a superb, gripping biography of an Americana legend. The Obituary Writer, her first adult novel, was published in 2014 and she is currently at work on her second. Both The White Giraffe and The Glory have been optioned for film.
💰🧸🌪️🌩️🌨️🐎💰 This book has cemented Lauren St. John's place as one of my favourite authors. Recently I have been reading her 'Wolfe and Lamb Mysteries' books and I love them. A few years ago I read 'Race the Wind' and loved that too, so I was excited to randomly come across this book in a local store.
The race depicted within this book is (thankfully) completely fictional - - a 1,200 km endurance challenge across four states in the US--- Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho and Oregon. $250,000 in prize money. Riders from all over the world flock to enter.
It's a great premise, exciting, with a refreshing twist being that the race is a month long endurance one rather than the more familiar thoroughbred flat racing.
Alex is a British teenager sent to a boot camp in the States as punishment for her behaviour - she escapes and joins the gruelling race on a stolen mustang. Sometimes I didn't like her, as she was spoiled and entitled quite frequently, but I was always interested in her, and loved the way her character developed. Also her compassion for her horse meant I could never hate her!
Will is an American teenage boy who enters the race because he needs the money to pay for his father's heart surgery - - he's basically a perfect character, without being saintly or feeling a bit false.
There's also a great cast of supporting characters, including two arrogant brothers and their beautiful Akhal-Teke horses. I have never seen an Akhal-Teke in real life, but from pictures they are absurdly beautiful.
I was swept away by this story - - for all the beautiful horses and sweet moments between Alex and Will, it is a book with a lot of depth. The challenges of the race are intense, with Will's motivation in particular being one so pure that you can't help but hope he wins.
Another thing I realised as I read this is that I really like the way Lauren St. John writes the parents - they aren't one-dimensional figures, there to either punish or encourage. They are characters that actually have personality and flaws - - I always appreciate when an author takes the time to do that. For most people their parents (or caregivers) play a significant role in their lives, whether that be positive or negative, but sometimes books for younger readers don't pay much attention to that.
First of all, I would like to say a HUGE thank you to April, who recommended this book to me! The Glory is truly an utterly fantastic, moving, heart-wrenching and beautiful story about courage, kindness, friendship, family, perseverance and love. This is the first novel I have read in 2016 and I just could. not. put. it. down. It is superb! I loved the story and the alternating POVs. It was exciting and a little different and just all in all a wonderful read. It's unpredictable and exciting...I had no idea how it would end or what turn the story would take next. One of the things I loved most about this story was the characters! The Glory is a very strong character driven story. We see multiple different POVs throughout the story but of course our two main POVs are our main protagonists: Alexandra Blakewood and Will Greyton.
ALEX At the beginning of the novel I must confess I was not overly keen on Alexandra. In ways I could sympathise with her and I understood why she behaved the way she did...a little. But I didn't find her particularly likeable to begin with. She does something stupid and lands herself in trouble and at this point I did really feel for the girl because things escalated beyond her control and she never meant for the disaster to happen. (Of course, I disapproved of her doing what she did in the first place, however...if she hadn't then we wouldn't have story.) However, I loved the growth of her character throughout the novel. She's fiery and brave and determined and those were the things I loved about her character and I found that more of her good side was revealed as the story went on. Yes there were times when I wanted to shake her with frustration and yell: "WHAT ARE YOU DOING YOU IDIOT?!" but, by the end of the story my opinion of her had changed completely. She had really grown on me and I loved her passion and love for horses. Her relationship with Scout was bumpy to begin with but the bond they eventually formed between one another as they went on their journey was endearing. However...nothing could ever beat the relationship between Will Greyton and his beloved Arab mare horse Shiraz!!! Their relationship is so special and beautiful and adorable and so, so strong. They say that a dog is a man's best friend...well in this case a dog has absolutely NOTHING on Will and Shiraz's relationship. I loved the way they took care of each other and the love they had for one another. (In many ways it reminded me a lot of Sean Kendrick's relationship with his beloved Waterhorse - Corr - from The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater, but this story is different. The characters are different and the horses are different...but both relationships are every bit as gorgeous as the other.)
WILL The male protagonist of the story and without shadow of a doubt my FAVOURITE character! He's strong, selfless, brave, loyal, caring, incredibly kind and so unbelievably sweet. He has the biggest heart in the whole world and these wonderful qualities of his meant were what enabled him to make so many sacrifices for the ones he cared about. My heart broke for him throughout the novel. He worked hard his whole life and was doing so well in his life and one incident involving his father resulted in him giving up so many of his dreams. I adored his relationship with his father and their bond was unbreakable. His devotion to his father and of course to his beloved mare Shiraz was so endearing and heart-wrenching. Will has lost so much in his life and when he was faced with the prospect of losing his dear father forever and his precious Shiraz, my heart just shattered into a million pieces for this poor boy. He didn't deserve to go through all that pain. Any of it. And to be faced with so much responsibility at the age that he was was so unfair but, Will being the kind-hearted soul that he is would do all of it all over if it meant that he could protect and hold onto the ones he loved. Oh and did I mention that he's every bit as gorgeous on the outside as he is on the inside? No? Well he is. Utterly, utterly gorgeous! <3 He is absolutely perfect and definitely my favourite character.
I was completely enraptured and wrapped up in both of their stories and just unable to put it down---and THAT is before our two protagonists even meet! And when they do finally meet...my oh my! The story enters a whole new realm of exciting!
I loved how Alex and Will's relationship grew and developed slowly over the course of their daring journey together. There were definitely moments when I wanted to shake Alex because she was being so stupid but at the same time there were countless moments between them that just made my heart swell to the point that I thought it might burst. Their relationship is beautiful and adorable. I loved the way they looked out for one another...even when they thought they shouldn't. But they couldn't help themselves! Their relationship was stunning and I loved reading every moment.
My emotions were in constant turmoil throughout this story because I started off not really liking Alex and falling completely in love with Will from the very first time he was introduced in the story; to then loving both of them and wanting both of them to win. For a while I couldn't decide between them and worst of all, the fact that this novel was so unpredictable meant that I had no idea who would win! In the end, my heart went out for Will to win The Glory because his motives were so selfless and caring and I wanted him to win so badly. I wanted them BOTH to win but I wanted Will to win more than anyone!
The end wasn't what I expected but I absolutely LOVED it! It was the perfect ending and I was left with a massive happy smile on my face when I read the last sentence. Will and Alexandra! <3 (Forever!)
With regards to the other characters...
Of course, I adored Will's dad. The fact that Will and his dad were best friends as well as Father and Son made their relationship all the more special and loveable.
I had expected to hate Alex's biological father - Sam Blakewood - but I actually really liked him and throughout the novel I was praying that they would one day find their way back to each other.
I despised Jeremy - Alex's stepfather. I gave him the benefit of the doubt at the start but I definitely hated him by the end, and I am so pleased with the outcome of his character by the end of the story.
With regards to Alex's mother - Natalie - I could not make up my mind about her during the first half of the story. She came across as weak and just didn't seem to understand her daughter. She made a few bad calls and allowed herself to be swayed by her manipulative husband, Jeremy. However, if that hadn't happened, then we wouldn't have such a beautiful story and so many relationships that were formed over the course of the story would never have happened. ;) By the end of the story she (like Alex) had really grown on me and, like with Sam, I was praying that Natalie and Alex would find their way back to each other too.
I don't want to spoil this book for those who haven't read it so I will simply say that The Glory is a MUST-READ! For a story centred around a brutal long-distance endurance race, it is fast-paced and exciting. It is a beautiful, romantic and powerful story about courage, willpower, love and sacrifice. If you love unpredictable stories filled with strong, memorable characters, endearing friendships and family bonds, stunning romance...and of course HORSES!!! then this is DEFINITELY one you must read!
I loved every moment spent reading this book and it is one that I shall definitely be reading again! This is the first novel I have ever read by Lauren St. John and she has completely blown me away with The Glory! If you haven't read this book...READ IT NOW!
(Thank you again April for recommending this amazing book to me! This is definitely one of the best books I've ever read! What a wonderful way to begin the New Year. Thank you.)
I spent my childhood immersed in horse books. Actually, I spent it immersed in books in general, but as a 'horse girl' I read a tonne of horse books. Saddle Club, Pony Pals, Heartland, Thoroughbred, a good chunk of standalones including some old Pullien-Thompsons and other authors from that era - I read everything I could get my hands on if it had a horse on the cover! So you can believe me, I am well-versed in horse literature, even if it's been a while - it's so hard to find good 'horse lit' for adults.
So, with all that behind me, how did I find The Glory? Kinda frustrating, to be honest. I didn't like Alex and have no time for reckless behaviour around horses, especially from someone who is meant to love them. I admire her bravery, of course, but found her also stupid. I thought it was quite unbelievable that Scout, the mustang that could be touched by nobody, let her saddle him up and ride him away, all the while she insisted he was still wild. He hardly ever put a foot wrong! It was too much of a leap for me to make. Luckily there was Will to save the story character-wise. Still, I found it very unlikely that his Arab mare, Shiraz, would be able to complete the 1200 mile long endurance race after only being ridden up and down in a park. She had no endurance training but was meant to be super fit? You could apply that to Scout too, who despite being a mustang, hadn't been touched or trained by anyone and had been sitting in a paddock.
I found this book required a big stretch of the imagination to be believable, and the end wrapped up almost too nicely. But that's not too say it was awful. A bit dramatic maybe and I found it asked a bit much of me, but not the worst book ever.
This book was really emotional and intriguing. It was about a girl and a boy who enter a huge race. One is riding for his fathers life and the other is on the run. They travel the course together and help each other. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves drama and adventure.

i've read this at least 3 times when i was younger and it was my favourite book. i loved it so much and i remember such great things about the story, even though i was probably too young to understand everything. i just remembered it was once my favourite book so i'll have to re-read this soon!
Alex Blakewood's parents despair of her destructive behaviour and send her to a US bootcamp. Will Greyton's hopes of college are already in pieces for lack of money when his sick father's medical treatment makes him desperate. Both seek salvation in a 1,200-mile horse race from Colorado to Oregon, through every kind of landscape and weather imaginable on two incredible horses. Will and Alex fates are intertwined as they fight their personal demons and the competition in their bids to get to the finish line first.
Lauren St John loves horses and wide open spaces and this comes through in the rich detail that brings this story to life. The pace never slackens. I couldn't put it down.
This is my first horse story by Lauren St.John and considering I am not that interested in equestrianism, I really enjoyed this book. The plot and pacing were thrilling to read and the characters were believable and their problems became your problems. Will and Alex and their slow progress in a relationship was endearing and sweet to read. I loved every second that they shared together. The descriptions of the scenery and the horses, especially Shiraz and Scout were beautiful. The ending was the best part and for me, it ended perfectly. I definitely recommend it!
I grew up on Lauren St John’s One Dollar Horse Trilogy. We later got the Glory. A fun novel that shows passion for all the themes explored: horses, American landscapes and history, freedom and love. I personally would’ve loved a bit character development rather than little history lessons throughout but it’s a fun easy read that can get you out of a reading slump anytime! Slow burn teen romance that is purely portrayed. Fun stuff!
Tahle knížka je tak boží a roztomilá!!! Koně jsem jako mladší žrala, milovala, kreslila, ale přesto se mi nikdy nesplnil sen - jezdit na nich. A proto mě tahle knížka uchvátila. Postavy jsou skvělý, styl psaní ještě lepší, koníci ještě víc. Prostě si to přečtěte ať už koně máte rádi nebo ne, protože i přesto to není to hlavní, co se v knize děje.
About a year or two ago, YouTube started pushing some mustang training videos into my feed. Realising that, even if I myself was no longer really capable of horseback riding, I could still watch these beautiful animals through my screen, I started following a few of the people who try to give mustangs a chance at a life after being captured. A month ago, I joined my local library (finally), and started digging through their horse books. Needless to say that when I saw the title and the summary of this book, I was immediately sold.
It sounds crazy, doesn't it, a 2000 km long journey through the Mid-West on horseback? I really worried for the horses’ health. But thankfully, there were stopping points and vet checks throughout the course, so even though there were horse and human injuries, everything was checked upon throughout the journey.
In hindsight, I was expecting to have read more of Alex and Will riding together, and while it was definitely there, there was so much else going on in the book that there didn’t seem time left for that, almost. I also was expecting to see a bit more of
I really did like the neatly tied up ending we were given, and would not have minded to have been given even further glimpses into their lives. But I guess I will just have to do with what we got. Personally, I think these kids will make it. ;)
I've bene wanting to read this book for so long and thanks to my local library, I now can. Libraries are great places! :D
It only took me a day to read- not my original plan, but I had to keep going back to it over several sittings. It came along at the right time as well. Despite me being a few years older than the intended age range of her books now, Lauren St John never fails to draw me in. I have a good collection of her books now, though I need to buy the final book then reread the whole of The One Dollar Horse series. She definitely knows about horses, and the character she creates are all just so compelling.
Now I've taken a star off because I got slight confused a couple of times with some minor characters and the romance between Alex and Will initially felt very much like insta-love, though it became more real as the book went on.
But overall, it was lovely to come back to this author's books with The Glory. I've been waiting to long to read it and I'm glad I did. :)
One of my favourite books of all time! Some moments where Alex and Will were thinking of each other, or where Will wants to take Alex to dinner in Paris simply made me smile, however, the author spent a lot of time focusing on The Glory race itself and personally, I don't think enough time on Alex and Will. I found myself forcing to read through the description of the race to finally get to a scene about the pair which didn't last long at all.

This is honestly one of the best books I have ever read! It was so beautiful and filled with love, adventure and hope. The characters were amazingly written so that they bounced off each other and you never felt yourself getting annoyed with any of them for their actions. The ending was so fairytale, the kind where all the ends are tied up and everything falls into place. I just loved it!
I hate when you find a really good book, and you can't tear yourself away from it, but you also want to carry on reading to find out the rest of the story, but you also don't want to finish it. I have read most of Lauren St John's book so it was a surprise to find one that I had missed. Great book. Great story. Keep them coming Lauren please.
This book- thisss boooookkk!!!! I will never forget it. Incredible. The journey this books takes you on is just incredible! Through the wild west on the back of a horse, following the story of two dedicated teens. Even if you don’t like horses, this book is still a massive recommendation. Such a nice story to read through with very likeable characters.
Oh how i love Lauren Im obsessed with horse rices and the way that she wrote about them is amazing But as a reader who isn't a fan of romance, I think the scenes between Alex and Will could have been fewer. Nevertheless, I loved the book.🏇💞
