I want it all. Whips and chains. Hearts and kisses.
Viola was the first woman I ever tied up. We had one of those brief but intense summer romances.
OK, so I screwed that up. But now, years later, I've got a second chance.
The thing is, she doesn't trust me. I write novels about a brutal spymaster whose craving for blood and torture is insatiable. Hidden in my home is an authentic medieval dungeon. I'm a connoisseur of finely-wrought leather floggers, silken ropes, the restrictive corset, the binding cuff.
I don't mean to frighten her. But hey, I want it all. Whips and chains. Hearts and kisses. Mastery and submission, pleasure and pain. I'm looking for that special partner--somebody to torment, somebody to love.
The door to my dungeon is open. It is up to her to walk in.

It was a nice read about a second chance romance. Very likable characters. It was a BDSM romance, but very little drama. A lot of the story I forgot already except that Stephan met Viola when he worked for her father when she was 17 turning 18 and Stephan was 21. People interfered in there "relationship" and they disconnected. Years later they meet at an event. They reconnect and their story begins. It was not a bad read, but it was not a "OMG, I could not stop reading."
This book is a positive story about second chances, being true to yourself and learning to overcome your past.
The story is told in the present day 3rd person POV but there are glimpses into the past and both Viola and Stephen recollecting the summer when they first met.
Overall I enjoyed the characters, the lighthearted banter and playfulness throughout the story and it was a great introduction into BDSM for those who have not read or know much about that particular practice.
Something I liked, and also didn't, was that the writing style was very romanticized. I enjoyed the words and phrases at times but I also felt as though they were living in the 18th or 19th century with the way they spoke and thought but the story was set in present day. This sometimes made it perplexing, and at times enjoyable, to read.
One thing I didn't not like, and found very off-putting, was the use of the word "dungeon", in regards to Stephan's BDSM playroom. Now, I realize that technically the room where he keeps his BDSM toys and performs his scenes could be classified as one but that word has certain connotations that come with it and I don't feel that a BDSM playroom is one. This might not bother others but it made the room seem sinister and not a "safe, sane and consensual" place for both people involved, even though it was. Maybe the author was trying to make it/Stephen seem more ominous but I just didn't like it.
Overall I liked certain aspects of this book but others not so much. Many readers seem to like this book so I suggest reading other reviews.
I was gifted a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Stephen Silkwood is a famous historical history writer. His subject matter makes some people nervous with its brutality. Unfortunately, he never thought it would come back to bite him in the ass.
The last person Viola Bennett thought she would see at a panel discussion at the college she worked at was the man who broke her heart nine years ago. Shocked yet somehow elated all she could think of was how much she wanted to run. When he doesn't recognize her at first sight she is hurt and even more determined to keep her distance. Stephen has other plans.
As the two work thru the lies and misconceptions of their pasts there are still hidden secrets that could hurt them. Can a woman who has been hurt in the past trust a man who she believes has some of the same characteristics as his book character? Can she fight her way thru the fears holding her back and maybe grab onto happiness? Stephen realizes that she still might be the one for him. He is stubborn enough to fight for what he wants.
I really liked that Stephen had both a bad boy vibe and a sweet, loving side as well. He was so determined not to let his "one" slip away again. Viola wasn't a shrinking violet either. Although some circumstances scared her, for the most part she was feisty with a good sense of humor.
An enjoyable read with some tough subjects touched as well.
3.5 stars rounded up to 4 stars. After reading some very poorly written books, I picked up this book and it was like a breath of fresh air. This was a beautifully written story about a dark romance/mystery writer, Stephen, and Viola, a professor of literature who has just published a scathing review of his latest book. Seems these two had a brief affair years ago and when they meet again she knows who he is instantly, but he doesn't remember her right away. The affair was doomed because her father didn't like the older Stephen around his eighteen year old daughter and sent him away.
Stephen is into BDSM (even with his own "red room") and Viola, in the years they were apart, was in a very abusive marriage that has left her afraid and skittish. As they rekindle their relationship questions come up about can a relationship survive if one party is into kink and the other thinks they need vanilla. A really nice read that did kind of peter out a little toward the end but it was certainly a welcome surprise to me.
The Dangerous Hero is the first book I read by Linda Barlow and I definitely loved it :) This for sure won't be the last book I read of hers. The story is intriguing and entertaining and the writing is superb. The characters are well developed and complex. They feel like real people and during the whole story I felt like I knew them.
The Dangerous Hero is a story of second chances. I enjoyed reading how Stephan and Viola build a new relationship from the ashes of the past and overcome all the misunderstandings, heartache and demons left from the nine years of separation. Stephan is the ultimate bad boy with pantie melting looks and strong and dominant personality. I loved the contrast between the two sides of him: the tender and loving boyfriend and the dominant alpha male with a secret dungeon :) I loved his rough side but I also immensely enjoyed the he took care of Viola when she needed it the most.
Viola is a sweet and tender woman who had to go through hell because of her ex-husband. Even though on the outside she is strong and independent but she still carries the demons from her marriage and they haunt her at night. She needs a hero to come and save her and she finds that in Stephan. Even though he scares her from time to time he manages to show her that she can trust him and he will protect her no matter the price.
Both Viola and Stephan find in each other what they have been looking for - the love of their lives. Their journey to is peppered with funny and witty dialog at times, intense feelings and interactions between them and the temperature of the story is increased more than once with incredibly hot scenes that can leave you panting especially if you are a fan of BDSM :)
In a few words, the book is so good that in my opinion it is a must read :) The story is enchanting and entertaining with quite a few twists that will keep you on your toes :) And the hotness is just off the charts :) Even though, this was the first book I read by Linda Barlow but it will be definitely not the last. This is definitely a recommended read :)
This review was originally posted at Living In Our Own Story Book Blog. I received an ARC of the book in exchange of an honest review.
This was delightful, it had a ring of truth to the whole scenario or perhaps that is not the correct analogy, I should say that it had its feet firmly planted on the right side of the BDSM scene. A thoroughly modern take on two adults who find love again in all it guises and learn to enjoy not only themselves but each other. I’m not saying that everything would be to every readers taste but what I will say is that the author did an outstanding job of showing that relationships, not just those that have their foundation firmly in the BDSM camp are built on the patience, hope, love and understanding but above all of that they are built on trust and respect. I loved the lead characters Stephen and Viola, they were delightful. They made me smile. This pair had been involved briefly before but what can you say when your holiday beau ups and disappears, par for the course! But years later, they are both guests on a panel and where Stephen discovers that Viola is a reviewers of his books, and she is not amused! The dark subject matter in his book is his chance to release his demons and find his release. For Viola moving on was not that easy, she wanted more with Stephen all those years ago and when he left she was distraught. She has been through the mill in the interim but when Stephen doesn’t recognise her, the pain of him leaving is back with a vengeance, he has broken her heart all over again. He meant so much to her, how could he just forget what they had? When he eventually gets his arse in gear and susses who exactly Viola is, he has one thought and one thought only – he wants her back, he wants his second chance and by god he is going to get his woman. Viola on the other hand is not is sure, can she trust him not to hand her a broken heart again, because she would never recover from losing him again. Can she let him in and more to the point can she keep her father out! This is a sexy read, one that punches well above it weight and I am delighted by that – a tale of love lost but re-discovered. But fundamentally it is a lesson in Trust and Acceptance… bravo Linda Barlow!
I really didn’t know what to expect when I read The Dangerous Hero but I was pleasantly surprised. Linda Barlow really used (what I like to call) long-sleeved kid gloves to introduce a subject to readers who may be new to this particular story line. She dealt with consenting sexuality with understanding, love, and kindness….and kink!
Even before the story opened, Ms. Barlow had me laughing. In her descriptive blurb, Viola (one of the main characters) asks herself: “can she trust a man whose home contains a dungeon?” Not a line you hear very often!
Stephen and Viola were great characters. I especially loved how they “met again” in the beginning of the book. Cracked me up! And the incident will carry thru the book and become a reoccurring theme. Completely believable and something that would happen in “real life”.
Don’t get me wrong, this book is deep and serious and deals with heavy life issues. It helps hammer home the point that kink and BDSM is based on trust and the reader discovers much more information about how it works as a relationship, rather than the “mechanics”. It is also about familial relationships and how hard and messy and loving families can be.
I enjoyed this book, my first by Ms. Barlow, highly recommend it, and I will read more of her books in the future. I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was a fantastic book and I really couldn't put it down. I loved it that much. Linda has created yet another gem to add to her novels.
Linda touched on different subjects in this story and everyone she did with the most respect.
Not being a newbie to the BDSM and kink genre, I wasn't shocked by anything however, the way she wrote about this lifestyle and genre would be perfect for first readers because she really laid out the lifestyle.
This book really took me on a emotional journey and really drew me into the world. It deals with some deep issues however, Linda balances perfectly.
I love the characters and the roundness of them. Stephen was the perfect alpha male with a home that comes with its own dungeon. I love that and he was perfect Viola. Viola was very relatable and I really connected with her. She was awesome.
This story is not like others where you can sometimes feel less real life and not possible. The Dangerous Hero is a story that could be possible.
This is my only first read review and I will read it again then add more to this review.
But for now I can't highly recommend this book for reader and I suggest that people who enjoy this genre to read it.
I was provided with a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The story revolves Stephen Silkwood, a writer and someone who has strange tastes in deciding and manifesting love. The first woman he ever first tried his violent love on, was someone he could also never get out of his mind. As his path crosses Viola Bennett's once again, he is determined to not mess up his chances this time. Viola is plagued by the past and her complete mistrust of this man who broke her heart, shattered her dreams and completely broke her spirit. Can they both get over their pasts and their mutual wariness and admit to their feelings for each other, is what the book takes us through.
The book is a typical violent romance take on a guy who has it all, and who likes to never hear no for an answer, and a girl with a fragile heart and a cautious approach to life. The pace of the book was brisk enough to be gripping and the characterisation helped the storyline. Stephen's character was a tad predictable, with his steely demeanour and his justifications for his behaviours and actions. Nevertheless, the plot was still engaging and I would recommend this to lovers of romance genres.
This was my first book I've read from author Linda Barlow and it definitely won't be my Last! It had so many flavors from light hearted to dark desires from sex to secrets just amazingly written. I fell in love with the characters Viola and Sir Stephen lol. They're candle relight as soon as they found each other so sweet but very sensual. I even emphasize with Percy an Bart lol. He finally saw some light in his darkness. The creativity from the "garage" and the " boathouse " and violas deep secret just kept me wanting more and more! Another thing I loved was it is a book not a short story so u really get to know each and every character very well. Linda Barlow has an awesome imagination great read!! U gotta read this book I know you will fall in love with it just as much as I have!! A new favorite for me!!
I started out by giving this book four stars. I changed my mind and upped it to five. Viola and Stephen met when she was a teen. She fell for him during that summer. Unbeknownst to her she wouldn't see him till years later. Hurt and anger consumed her. She meets him again later on. He's a renowned writer and she gave himself a scathing review. I was pulled in immediately. Sometimes it takes me awhile to get through a book. I watch my granddaughter so there's no reading then. Haha.
This book made me tense, it made me laugh right out loud, it made me sigh. It just had it all. I highly recommend it.
This was tagged on the "Call Me Killer" which is .99 cents. She was releasing it that way for awhile. If it isn't it still only $3.99. I though it was worth it.
Stephen is a man with a dark side and sets it free in the books he writes. But he also wants to find that one special person to share it with as well. Stephen and Viola shared a summer romance and then he vanished. Now he is back and wants a second chance with Viola, but with the violence of her past can she trust this man with her heart and her body. Wonderful read. A kinky, sexy book that shows Viola may be the one tied up but in truth she holds all the power. If she can learn to trust Stephen. A wonderful emotional roller-coaster, I couldn’t put it down.
This is in the box set Healing Submission. This story is very, very good. If you can no longer get the box set, by all means, you should definitely get this book separately. This is my first reading of Linda Barlow's work but it will definitely not be my last.
* * * obsessed by books arc given for an honest review * * *
I really enjoyed this book, but I love BDSM. This book was a second chance at love . Stephen let his love slip away once his not letting go again, but can it survive the past of his and Viola. This book was, sexy, hot. A great read..
abuse survivor falls in love with an experienced dom. he doesn't know about he abuse and accidentally triggers a ptsd reaction. she pulls back. he pursues, gently. hea.
He'd been a sex god nine years ago, and he still was.
Didn't sexual chemistry have an expiration date? *snicker* WOW! I am so impressed with Linda’s writing & writing….style, I guess is the correct term! This is my first book of hers and I cannot wait to read more! It is very beautifully written with just the right amount of EVERYTHING to make it PERFECT! I felt that this was my best friend’s story that I was reading because Viola is so relatable, so loveable, so funny…so REAL! I love the “reality” of it all, the way that she laughs, what she laughs at & with Stephen, the fear, the tears, the way, how & why she is adventurous, willing to try new “things” both on her own but mostly with Stephen. I thought that Stephen was awesome! Loved the fact that even though he likes, or HAS to be, the Dom in the bedroom, he does NOT want that outside of it. And the fact that he knows so much about it, the correct way etc. also shows his sweeter side. Trust me! After you read this book – which I think everyone should – you will understand what I mean!!! I loved that they hooked up so quickly and that both sides talked about what had happened and who really was/is to blame and I just loved how real they both are. The do those daily things that are usually not mentioned in book – when Rusty comes out to greet her, he sniffs her crotch – all dogs do that, but it is not normally mentioned. It is the little things like that… okay, that is a funny example, I know, but I was trying to show that it is a book that pays attentions to all kinds of little things WITHOUT killing you with too much babble, and it all helps to enrich the story. It is hard to explain because even I don’t fully understand just WHY I loved this book so much other than owing it all to Linda’s way of storytelling. I thoroughly enjoyed this book even though no vampires were present (my fave hero)LOL I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, so to speak, but I still was surprised at WHEN it did and HOW! Not at all what I thought it would be which was also part of the charm! Even though I do not normally pick a contemporary romance book as my first choice to read, I can’t wait to read about the rest of the group, especially Kate! This story is not about first loves, second chances, conquering fear, learning to trust all over again, nor is it about romance, love, BDSM or a HEA – it is about ALL of that and more!! All woven together perfectly to make one magically hot, sexy & beautiful romantic story from one author that has shown me just how talented she is!! I am now a big fan of Linda Barlow and can’t wait to read her paranormal stories! If she can make me love her contemporary novel – which is not a genre I normally will read but was definitely worth a 5 star review – then I cannot wait to see what is in store for me with the genre that I do love and read all the time!! (update – I have now read 2 of Linda’s paranormal books and OH MY WORD!!! She truly is one gifted author that can successfully write fascinatingly creative & unique books in either genre!!!)
THE DANGEROUS HERO is the second book I’ve read written by Linda Barlow – and I absolutely loved it. Her storyline is witty, her characters well developed, charming and believable, it is hard to not fall for them.
This is Stephen Silkwood and Viola Bennett’s story. It is a story about second chances and about trust, placed in a well-thought-out and authentic BDSM setting.
Stephen is an author of successful historic novels with an unusually brutal and despicable hero. People love the books nonetheless, but how much of the features of his main character does Stephen harbor himself?
Viola is a literary professor, teaching at a college. She just divorced her abusive husband and is still trying to rebuild her trust in men again. Stephen, who broke her heart nine years ago when she was barely an adult, with his violent books is a perfect outlet for her with her scathing reviews.
Never would she have thought to meet him ever again, but they do, at a panel at her college where they both are invited as guests. Should she be relieved or devastated that Stephen does not seem to recognize her? But despite not being recognized, the sparks still fly mutually.
When Stephen’s memory finally sets back in he is more determined than even before: He has to have this woman, he wants his second chance with her to prove that she is the one. He was dominant before, 9 years ago, but today he has perfected his BDSM lifestyle.
Only can Viola accept this lifestyle, including his very own dungeon? Moreover, is she able to separate Stephen from his sadistic hero and from her abusive ex-husband?
I think Stephen has to be my favorite Dom to date. He is sweet, unbelievably caring and knows that patience, respect and trust are crucial for his lifestyle – and, most importantly, he also knows how to introduce a newbie to the lifestyle without scaring her away – especially given her tragic and violent past. But when he flips the switch and goes into full Dom mode, embracing his darker side… he’s all hot, sexy and dominant alpha male! If I could I would definitely swap places with Viola!
A highly erotic romance with a slow and natural-felt introduction into the BDSM world, that I really enjoyed reading. Entertaining and delightful, peppered with darker themes.
Stephen is Viola's least favorite author as he writes books with an extremely violent main character. When she ends up on a speaking panel with him there is quite the chemistry there. She remembers that chemistry well while he shows no recollection of her. He asks her out and she turns him down. Then his friend mentions who her father is and that summer they spent together comes back into his mind. He tries again to get her to meet with him and she agrees. That's when the feelings they had years ago come flooding back to both of them. Stephen has a secret and when it comes out it may cause Viola to run. Something happened to her in the past that makes things much more complicated for them. Plus there is that whole lie that her father did to separate them years ago and his anger at them being together now.
Stephen and Viola are over the top hot together and I loved that she was open to trying to share in his secret and that he was so very patient and kind with her as she dealt with some serious issues with it. I felt so bad for Viola and all she suffered, but I loved that Stephen was there to help her work through it. I loved that their affection for books brought them together even if she was his harshest critic. I so enjoyed their second chance love story.
First encounters can make a lasting impression. For Viola this was certainly the case with Stephen and she was devastated when he left without a word. Fast forward to when they meet again and that spark is still there. But Viola refuses to explore the possibilities with him as a result of an abusive ex-husband and the fact that Stephen is an author whose hero is a sadistic man. Viola is unable to separate the man from the fiction, as there has to be some of the man in the fiction, right?
Stephen likes control in the bedroom and lives a BDSM lifestyle, right down to the dungeon in his home. Viola was his first attempt at exerting control sexually and gave him the confidence he needed. When he walked out of her life, it was not through choice. He finds himself with a second chance with her but can she accept his lifestyle? While she is open to the pleasures that it can bring, she is reluctant to give total control or acceptance to it while her past still exerts control over her.
A highly sensual and erotic read that introduces the world of BDSM patiently and naturally. As Viola is new to the lifestyle, she doesn't get thrown into the world straight away as we have seen in other books. We get to explore what it means right alongside her and understand much more about it. An engaging and hot read that felt completely natural.
Well written with a few editing issues, mostly missing or extra words. This is a stand-alone book with no cliffhanger, although the main character appears in two of her prior books (which I haven't yet read.)
I really enjoyed this story about two people reconnecting nine years after a brief romance. At the point they reconnect, each is successful in their own careers, and confident of themselves professionally. The main female character is recently divorced from a very bad marriage, and not so confident about her ability to judge the worthiness and safety of her romantic choices.
The story has reconnection and atonement at many levels, but despite the heavy topics, maintains a light-hearted, romantic feel. The characters are smart, literate and literary, and a little nerdy, so it was fun to spend time with them.
BDSM is an important part of the story line, but had a whole new perspective than I've read before, as the experienced Dom today is contrasted with his very first kinky experience, as well as his own awareness of developing sadistic preferences much earlier.
Strongly recommended to fans of smart couples, second chances and BDSM.
"What a Amazing book!" This is an amazing BDSM Romance. The story line is fantastic! What starts off as a steamy fling with Stephen when Viola is just a teen turns into a raging storm when they meet up again years later. The Characters are incredible! Viola is a spunky assistant Professor at Stephen's best friends college that Jeff works at. Stephen is now a sexy as heck Author that Viola had given a bad review to LOL . Viola thought Stephen had just dropped her when they were younger, But her father had broke them up. Stephen has a dark secret he is a Dom. The question is can Stephen and Viola make it work this time ? Or will Stephens kinkier side get the best of Viola?. You are just going to love this book!. You are going to get so lost in this story!. Linda Barlow is an awesome writer!. And reading her books make you wish you had a Dom of your own :).
Dangerous Hero is intense from the start. Viola had her heart broken as a young girl by the man she thought she might have a future with. Years later Stephen is successful writing about a character that is dark and twisted. Viola is on a discussion panel with Stephen where she reveals to him that she is the published reviewer who doesn’t think so highly of his work. Her heart also aches that he doesn’t recognize her as the girl from so many years ago. Stephen discovers who she is and is determined to win her back. Viola isn’t so sure, and she’s had a rough time in the years they have been apart. This novel is about love and trust. Can Stephen show that he loves Viola and didn’t mean to leave her, Can Viola trust Stephen, will Viola’s father and past keep them apart? This book pushes those questions and keeps you intrigued and wanting to see them together.
This book is about second chances. Two people fall for each other when they were very young. Circumstances took them in different directions for 9 years. Read the book to find out why. Then they meet again after 9 years and the chemistry is still there. But both have life experiences that need to be understood. This author writes so wonderfully that you become the characters. The love story, sex scenes, plot are all fabulous. I would advise to read her other books first. Blazing Nights, Uncover Me, then a Kiss is just a Kiss. You don't have to each can be a standalone. But if you read the others first you get a whole understanding of the characters. Just a better reading experience. And her other books are just as good.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review. This is a second chance love story and I LOVE a second chance love story. The writing is brilliant! Linda Barlow is such a great writer; she makes you feel like you're a part of the story. I couldn't put the book down. Viola is a professor and Stephen is a writer. They met and had a romance 9 years before, but due to a misunderstanding, they broke up. They meet again and the chemistry is still there. Viola and Stephen have great interactions with each other. This story is very hot and has BDSM in it. It is a great book. I can't wait to read more by Linda Barlow!
The Dangerous Hero by Linda Barlow The story is about Viola and Stephen. They had an affair in the summer when she was 18 and he 21. He disappeared of her life and meet in a conference years later. He was on BDSM and she has an abused past with her ex-husband. There were lots of explanations about BDSM and how trust and safe is a main concern. The development was about regaining trust. I think the story was clear, directed to clarify ideas, slow paced but it let you to know better the characters. I read this story as part of Healing Submission a set about second chances and I enjoyed it very much.
'The Dangerous Hero' was a bonus novel at the end of Linda Barlow's book 'Call Me Killer' which I loved. 'Hero' starts out as a sweet second chance love story which unfortunately, quickly turns into a manual for the BDSM lifestyle. If you are into that, this book is definitely for you! I am not, and would have liked to have more of the 'second chance love story' as the story's primary focus. Since I would never choose to read this book on its own, I felt a rating of 3 was neutral. I really like the author's writing style just not the topic - BDSM as illustrated through a second chance love story.
This is a great book. I loved the story of Stephen and Viola. They first met when Stephen was in his early twenties and Viola barely eighteen and meet again nine years later. When they meet again and Stephen, a successful author, doesn't recognize Viola the sparks fly. Viola is a literary professor, and has reviewed Stephens books. She hates Stephens main characters and writes scathing reviews. They get together again and Stephen introduces Viola to BDSM. Nine years in a long time and a lot can happen. Read, read, read this book!
I received this book as an ARC for an honest review. This is my first read by this author.
Viola is a professor with a sad past. Stephen is just the man to help her work through it all. Her past with Derek made me want to hurt him myself. Stephen has a kink side and teaches Viola to not only accept it but to let go and really enjoy it. I really enjoyed this read. I liked the fact that her father was on scene and helpful as well. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading BDSM books. Very well written.
They shared a summer fling and the start of a great love, but it ended in a way that they both felt, deeply. Now years later they´re once again face to face, but Stephen doesn´t recognize her, either as the summer girl or the reviewer who hates his books at the moment. When realization strikes, will he try to make amends? And will Viola let him dominate her like he wants, or will her past prevent this second chance? Smutty fluff, Contemporary romance and BDSM in a great combo. 4,5 Stars
