Bronwyn's love of reading all things romantic got her into trouble at a very young age. Starting with Mills and Boon 'borrowed' from her mother and then progressing to meaty historicals and sweeping sagas, it's only fair that romance pays her back with unique ideas for her own novels. She now writes dark and gritty Regency that borders on the edge of noir with the occasional dabble in contemporary and women's fiction. Her treehouse in the Adelaide Hills is filled with the laughter of her young kids, the meows of two white, fluffy cats and a man who thinks chilvary is what happens after you eat bad chicken.

4.5 Romantically Ruinous Stars!

A remarkably refreshing romance awaits readers within these pages. As Bronwyn delivers an arse-kicking heroine and a dangerously unconventional hero, who deliver witty banter and high passions.

Daniella, the daughter of a renowned pirate captain, creates scandal after scandal to force her way back onto the deck of her beloved ship. Enter James Trelissick, who saves her from the latest scandal only to take her hostage, in hopes of a trade for his abducted mother and sister. As the story moves away from London and the judgmental ton, Daniella and James find themselves faced with danger after danger upon the road north, not to mention the constant battle of blades, wits, anger and passion between them.

I throughly enjoyed every moment of 'The Road to Ruin', as action and adventure rarely explored in my previous Regency romances. Bronwyn's characters were very real, shirking from the conformity to please the reader they became strong and independent. Daniella, especially, had a very relatable character for modern readers, but was not made awkward in her era by her history and upbringing.

I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting an adventurous regency romance, and who doesn't love some pirates to boot?

James Trelissick, Marquis of Lasterton, has kidnapped a pirates daughter and trouble maker known as Daniella Germaine. He needs her so he can arrange a swap for the mother and sister Daniella's father has taken from him. But Daniella has a knack for scandal and is no timid London socialite. Longing to escape London society and the clutches of her brother's matchmaking efforts so she can return to the Aurora, the pirate ship on which she was raised, Daniella has done everything she can to get her father's attention. But James interrupted her plans with his own and now they must work together to get her back to her father. Both of their reputations are at risk along with their lives on the road to Scotland. Will they kill each other before they make it, or will they find something else worth living for?

This was a fantastic read. I absolutely loved James and Daniella and the chemistry they had leapt off the pages. This was my first book of 2015 and I am so happy that I started the year on it. I couldn't put it down until I finished it. I'm also excited to have found another Aussie Author and I look forward to reading more from Bronwyn Stuart.

At first I was a little skeptical about the plot, however, now 2 chapters in, I find that the storyline is adventurous and innovative. I love giveaways that take you out of your comfort zone and push past the limitations placed on books and storylines that are favored. Already I would put this down as a MUST READ for any historical or adventure readers! An author now on my fan list!

UPDATE: I LOVED this book and just finished. Sorry about the delay. I loved that the female lead character stood out as quite different to the stereotypical woman of the genre, being a pirate's daughter. It really made the plot a lot more fun and entertaining. The book was filled with love, adventure and I had many moments in fits of laughter. A definite must read. Loved it all the way through. 5 out of 5. 19-05 I passed the book onward to my friend (60+) and she has also enjoyed the book. She told me she loved the romance of the period and the book was captivating and well written. xxxxx

It is a while since I have read a story with pirates and I really did love this one when Daniella Germaine is sent to London by her pirate father to become a lady and live with her brother Anthony she is not very happy and does everything she can to cause scandal so as she can get back to the sea and the only way of life she has known. James Trelissick the Marquess of Lasterton has returned to London to take over the role of Lord after a scandal that rocked the ton but he has been away fighting in the war and has the title of the butcher but when his mother and sister vanish and are taken by the pirate Richard Germaine the only option he has is to kidnap Daniella and exchange her for his family. This is a wonderful story filled with adventure passion and danger as James sweeps Daniella towards Scotland to find her father on this journey they learn lots of truths about each other and themselves and the passion that sparks between them loved this one :)

I received this book as a Goodreads Giveaway.
I was quite excited when I found out I had won a copy of The Road to Ruin through good reads first-reads. Since I was a young girl I have loved a good pirate tale, however I haven’t read any now for quite a few years. I am pleased to say The Road to Ruin did not disappoint and has well and truly reignited my passion for tales upon the high seas. Although the storyline is mostly based on land, there are plenty of reminisced tales of Daniella’s adventures as a “privateer” with her infamous father Richard Germaine. I really enjoyed the historical aspects to the story and loved reading about James, aka the Butcher, and seeing his character develop and evolve throughout the story. The plot was thick with suspense and unexpected turns; there was not a dull moment in it!

Daniella Germaine is sent to London by her father in hopes of her becoming a proper lady, finding a husband and settling down. Which is all difficult to do when you've grown up as the daughter of a notorious pirate. Daniella however, wants none of that and is determined to gain her father's attention in the most scandalous ways possible so that he'll abandon such foolish notions and bring her back home. She longs for the freedom of the open seas and the ship she grew up on, and the thought of losing her independence to a husband is abhorrent. And it's all going splendidly until her coachman decides to foil her latest scandal and kidnap her.

James Trelissick, Marquis of Lasterton, is determined to get his mother and sister back from the evil clutches of the pirate who abducted them. Masquerading as Miss Germaine's coachman, he kidnaps his enemy's daughter with plans to ransom her for his family. But his well laid plans were no match for this pirate's daughter and their journey together forces them to re-evaluate both their lives and if going their separate ways at the end of the road is really what they want.

This was such a fun book and pulled me in from the start! Daniella was not a swooning debutante. She was a saucy swearing, trouser wearing, sword fighting, strong experienced woman who was determined to live the life she wanted. And James needed a woman like Daniella to help him start living life again after the horrors of war. I do love a road trip romance and I enjoyed the genuine way their relationship developed along the way.

“𝑌𝑒𝑡 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑎𝑙𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑑𝑦 𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑒.”

There was some frustration and confusion over the motivation behind a couple of the characters but it was fairly minor and didn't detract any enjoyment out of the story and I suspect may perhaps have some set up for the next book in the series. I did have an inkling about how some things might work out but that sometimes just makes me excited to see if I'm right and pat myself on the back for being so clever 😉

I loved the premise for this book—pirate’s daughter gets kidnapped by a peer of the realm and taken to Scotland to be traded for his sister and mother, whom he believes have been kidnapped by her father.
The story is set in regency England and is the first in Bronwyn Stuart’s Daughters Of Disgrace series. Daniella Germaine has been sent by her privateer father to live with her brother Anthony, who has been knighted for saving the Prince’s life. Anthony has been tasked with finding her a suitable husband. Daniella hates London, hates her prospective beaus and believes if she behaves outrageously enough her father will be forced to take her back onto the ship she has loved all her life. James Trelissick, Marquis of Lasterton has come into his title after the deaths of his father and older brother. His mother and sister are his only remaining family and he will do anything to get them back.
Both Daniella and James are strong characters though each is flawed. I liked them both almost immediately, James perhaps more immediately than Daniella who is feisty and tends to act before she thinks. It didn’t take long to see that they belonged together. Their journey was thoroughly entertaining if at times pushing the boundaries of believability. I was thoroughly invested in the story and keen to see how it would end.
There were a few linguistic flaws that detracted from my enjoyment as they pulled me out of the story. At one point in the story Daniella says “Bullshit”, a word which had its origins around 1915, and at another point she tells James to “Piss off”, a phrase dating back to the 1920’s. Those aside, this was a good book and I’m looking forward to the next one in the series.

The Road to Ruin is the second book of Stuart have read and I admit it has been a while since I read the last one. I enjoyed her previous book and I love how I can see how she has grown as author since the last one . Taking us once again back in history, this time we are in the midst of the ton in regency England, however this story isn’t about them and their inner works. We may have members of the ton involved in this book . However we got pirates, a determined hero and a feisty heroine who may be more determined than the hero.it makes for an interesting read.

Daniella is the daughter of a pirate and grew up on her father’s pirate ship until her father decided that she need to be a lady and was passed off to her brother who has become a member of the ton, He wants her to join society be a prim and proper miss so she can make a suitable marriage. However Daniella loves the sea and wants nothing more to be on the decks of a ship sailing the seas. Therefore she comes up with a devious plan to get her father‘s attention and get back to his ship The Aurora

The author has other plans for her and it comes in the form of her coachman who got his own ideas for Daniella and decides to throw a spanner the works. Just as she about to cause a scandal, he comes sweeping and takes her freedom away and kidnapped her’s. See this isn’t any ordinary coachman, he happens to be James Treswick, Marquis of Lasterton and he needs Daniella.

He knows she is trouble and wants her freedom but he offers her the one thing she wants more than anything. A way back to he father and free from her brother’s influence which is wrecking her life. There is no way that he won’t take her back now that she has been kidnapped and being hold for ransom. So the question is why would a marquis stoop down so low to kinapped a pirate’s daughter, a person that hasn’t been welcomed by the ton.

It seems nothing what it seems as we soon discover James is forced by birthright to take the role of being the Marquis. He is only using the title to get people dear to his heart back. He rather fade into the darkness and be forgotten as he has a past he rather forget soon as possible. However the love he has for them is overruling everything and we are taken on a journey as these two work together to get to Daniella’s father and solve their problem. They may share a common goal of finding her father but couldn’t be any further different on what they want from hm. These two shouldn’t work together as a couple and should fighting to be free of each other. However the author makes them work as their common goal overrules everything.

Stuart has written a captive story that isn’t the typical kidnapper and captive story as Treswick treats her with dignity and Daniella doesn’t try too hard to get away. It becomes a natural progressive to romance as they journey together and face trials and tribulations to get their destination. It not just a journey to love, it is also a journey of discovery and the result will keep you on your toes as the author pays attention to the finer detaisl to make sure that we get to experience the highs and the lows with this couple.

Stuart’s latest offering, is an entertaining read that I enjoyed a lot. I love her taken on the pirates as it offered something new to me and I hope that she offers another romping pirate tale like this In the near future

‘The Road to Ruin‘ begins the ‘Daughters of Disgrace‘ series with an intense, steamy, banter-filled romance between two unlikely people that captured my imagination from the start. Although this title was previously published in 2014, those who love a really good Historical Romance will find a romp-filled, action-packed romance that will satisfy just about any Romance reader’s needs.

Meet James and Daniella. He’s of the nobility, she’s a pirate’s daughter being thrust into the marriage season by that father against her will. And her ‘will’ is impressively strong. His mother and sister have been, to his mind, kidnapped by her pirate father. As James comes up with a plan to rescue the women he loves, the only family he has left desperate times call for desperate measures… and result in a lively adventure for them both that may just be exactly what they each wanted and desired from the start.

The cover description tells you the basics of ‘The Road to Ruin‘. What you’ll find inside those covers is a captivating look at two very unconventional people doing what they feel is necessary for the circumstances. For James, it’s to rescue his sister and mother. For Daniella, it’s to avoid an unwanted marriage and return to the sea that she loves. As they race toward the coast of Scotland much will change between a desperate man and a kidnapped woman. Anger, frustration will begin to give way to desire and even a bit of admiration… but definitely it will lead to a love that defies the convention of the times yet works quite well for Daniella and James.

I adored both of these characters. There were moments of laughter, sizzling chemistry, frustration, and an overall feel that these two belonged together if only they’d get out of their own way and acknowledge that fact. I had a good time with this story and definitely look forward to ‘The Slide into Ruin‘ to come. If you love a really good love story, then you’ll want to pick up ‘The Road to Ruin‘ right now.

*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher, Tule Publishing. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*

The Road to Ruin is a must read Historical romance. With interesting and unique characters , the author has painted her settings and characters with life and spark.

A smooth flowing plot with intriguing characters and a wonderful setting, The Road to Ruin will be enjoyed by all who enjoy the historical setting and era that the book is set in.

Two unlikely characters embark on a not so planned journey and along the way many many unexpected turns become about.

I enjoyed the banter between the characters and at times I admit I had a laugh out loud moments with the sassy and smart whitted Daniella Germaine .

James Trelissick, Marquis of Lasterton, surely had his work cut out for his with this sassy woman. Trying not only to deny the chemistry between them and protect her as well it surely was a struggle of wills.

Daniella Germaine is sent to London to give up her pirate ways in order to become a lady and find herself a husband. But this is not what she is after. She causes many a scandal so she can get back to her father and his boat - but along the way James Trelissick has other plans.

James has his own background to his story - but the path that he must follows involves a sassy , hot headed woman and the return of something he had had stolen from him.

They both embark on a journey of discovery, passion and danger ..

A scandalous historical romance , filled with passion, danger , lust and intrigue. It will keep you captivated till the very last pages.

Well this book had me laughing in quite a few places the mischief that these two get up to is enough to keep you engaged until the last page While this is a new author for me and historical romance isn't normally my thing this re release by Tule publishing kept me engaged

Daniella Germaine is determined to get herself back on the deck of her famous pirate father's deck even though she has been dumped by him into the hands of her brother and cast onto the marriage market of London. She knows how to work her way back though she continually gets herself involved in scandal after scandal hoping she will become untouchable to any future groom. The only problem is she has an overprotective coachman who is determined to keep her safe or is there more to him than she realise Her coachman is in fact James Trelissick, Marquis of Lasterton and he intends to kidnap Danielle and swap her for his sister and mother who have been kidnapped by Daniella's father. As these two head North and he puts his plan into action they will fight and tussle their way to Scotland and the meeting with her father The only problem is by the time they arrive he will have fallen in love with his captive a feeling that is mutual and he may not want to hand her back to her father.

I read anything that Tule Publishing sends my way but will admit I wasn’t sure about The Road To Ruin (Daughters of Disgrace #1) by Bronwyn Stuart. I need not have been uncertain about reading because it is quite an entertaining book. That is saying something since I lean more towards contemporary than I do historical romance.
What a marvelous movie this book would make. It has Daniella’s outrageous take charge of my life heroine pitted against the ruthlessness of James. He does not agree to cater to Daniella even if he had been fooling her for months. Both characters are unconventional for the times but so much fun because of it. Plenty of delicious banter, action and danger. Both have goals to be achieved, together they can do it but will they lose their hearts in the process?
A newer author for me to read. However, I will be looking for more of her books after reading Road To Ruin. Recommend to all who enjoy a rip-roaring read.

The Road To Ruin is the first print book by local Adelaide hills author Bronwyn Stuart, with her new publisher Harlequin. I was fortunate to attend the launch of the book at Dymocks in Rundle Mall, and meet many other fabulous authors, the feeling I came away from the launch with is that this is only the beginning for Bronwyn Stuart and we will be seeing more from her.

Historical romance is generally not my genre but Beauty and Lace has certainly broadened my reading horizons and I’m game to give pretty much anything a go these days. I am beginning to cultivate an affection for well written historical romance that isn’t too heavy going to read.

The Road To Ruin is a historical novel set not in the ton, as is usually the case, but largely on the road though under the rules of the ton as much as is possible.

Thoroughly enjoyed this historical romance. It's a regency with a twist - pirates. No stuffy ballrooms, tea with the ton, or walks in the park.

Instead we have feisty Danielle Germaine, who is the daughter of a pirate - sorry, privateer. She's been sent to London by her father to gain respectability but that is the last thing that she wants. She does whatever in her power to ruin her reputation so her father would have no choice but to take her back. She isn't shy about giving her opinions and she can also has skills no other lady has - particular with a blade.

James Trelissick is on a mission of his own to get back his family from Danielle's father, and he will use Danielle as a bargaining chip if he has to. But she tests his every nerve. A battle of the wills ensues bringing each to life in a way they haven't felt before.

Action, verbal sparing, schemes - this book has it all. How can you go past pirates?

This reader was captivated from the start with The Road To Ruin by Bronwyn Stuart! Trelissick and Germaine's antics are just hilarious and scandalous that readers can't help but be swept up in the story - witty dialogue between Danielle Germaine and James Trelissick's characters is at many times comical and has readers rapt with their firesome attraction that was just scorching. The verbal sparring was a stand out and some unmissable reading. Many twists and turns in the story with a finale that completely entertains.

The Road to Ruin by Bronwyn Stuart
When scandal surpasses discretion…
James Trelissick, Marquis of Lasterton, will do anything to free his mother and sister from a notorious pirate. Their disappearance threatens his sister’s reputation and future. Desperate after months of fruitless searching, he disguises himself as a servant for the pirate’s daughter and kidnaps her, intending to exchange the hoyden for his beloved family.
Daniella Germaine’s only wish is to be back on the deck of her father’s pirate ship, the wind in her hair and adventure on the horizon. But her father foisted her off on her brother to join London’s marriage market and find a husband. To prove herself unmarriageable, Daniella hurls herself into scandal after scandal only to be ‘rescued’ by her handsome but disapproving coachman who takes his protection duties far too seriously for her agenda.
When the rescue turns into a hostage swap, Daniella finds herself knee-deep in intrigue and adventure that could prove as deadly to her heart as it is to her life.
This is Daniella Germaine and James Trelissick's story.
What the devil was she up to now?
They had to be in the worst part of London’s seedy wharves and warehouses. The stink of rotten fish mingled with the even ranker filth flowing down the edges of the street. James Trelissick flexed his fingers and then clenched them again, the urge to block his nostrils almost too much. “Are you sure this is the address, miss?”
Her uncovered head leaned through the open window of the closed carriage beneath him and James had to fight an even stronger impulse to whip the horses until they were far away. Vibrant red hair and a fair complexion turned the spoiled young woman into a beacon. At least she’d had sense enough to don a dark cloak over her evening gown, although even a fool half blind and deep in his cups would note her station.
“Your job is not to question, John,” she reminded him.
James shook his head and lifted his woollen cap to rake a hand through his hair. “I have no idea but you can bet it isn’t good. Watch the horses; don’t move from this spot but be ready to flee as soon as I say the word.”
He didn’t wait for Hobson’s nod or reply. His man would know what to do.
As he ran back to the warehouse his mistress for the-moment was intent on entering, he transferred a pistol from his pocket to his hand then pulled his ragged coat sleeve over the weapon. At some stage he would need to use it, of that he was sure. Trouble didn’t so much follow Daniella Germaine as she was the trouble herself.
The Road to Ruin by Bronwyn Stuart is a 3 star book.

Highly engaging story!

Overall, this book is a fun romantic entanglement. The protagonists are passionate about their goals and willing to battle each other to achieve them. The female protagonist is splendidly feisty and true to herself and her heart. The male protagonist is devoted to his family and those he considers family. Their crazy schemes lead them on quite an adventure that includes a great deal of physical brawling, crazy kidnappings, and strange turn-abouts.

The biggest problem with the book is that the author needs to learn to use commas between independent clauses joined with a conjunction (and, or, but). There are other typos that are distracting, but the reader can forge onward without too much confusion.

There are some plot holes that may likely become other books—how did all the couples meet? What’s Patrick’s story?

What could make the story better is for Daniella’s POV to include more sea references and sailing metaphors. It would also have made the book better for James to see her at her best —while sailing on the ocean.

There are passionate kisses, a few sex scenes, but mostly the dialog captures the fire between the hero and heroine. The epilogue adds a smile to the HEA.

There are references to a suicide, unwed mothers, military assassinations, whores, PTSD, (and a violent scene captures the intensity of this affliction), alcohol consumption, and murders, but these issues are effectively woven into the larger story so that they are part of the characters’ arcs. It is a pirate story, after all!

Bronwyn Stuart is a new author for me.
Those of you who read some of my reviews know I read a book a day or sometimes a book and ½ a day. Well I started this one on Saturday and here it is Monday morning and I’m only ½ way through. The first chapter was very promising and I thought, “okay, this is going to be interesting.” Unfortunately it was just, blah!! The story dragged and wasn’t very exciting. Even James and Daniella’s conversations, which due to their long journey they had a lot of, were quite boring. I never felt any angst with them. I was disappointed that the story wasn’t better. I was really looking forward to reading her. As I picked it up again Monday I read about 6% more and said I’m done…I can’t read this anymore and so I returned the book. Since I paid for it, I usually finish them even if they are not very good but I just couldn’t finish this one.

Worth Reading

Though it took me a long time to read this book, I did like it by the end. I'm not sure why I felt this book somewhat struggled along I did stick to it. The main female character was a disgrace for that period of time. The main male character is a product of his experiences in the Napoleonic wars which come out later in the book. the final chapters do clear up some questions that nag the reader early. Try it you may like it more than I did.
