Peyton Brooks, FBI #2

Mermaids in the Pacific

Rate this book
Peyton thought working for the FBI would bring new adventure and intrigue into her life. Certainly being assigned to the Ghost Squad promised such things, but reality is often different than the dream.

Everything is wrong. Her new boss, Radar, thinks she’s angling for his job, her personal life is in shambles, and her once over-crowded house has become an empty shell where she and her dog, Pickles, wander about, longing for what was lost.

With Marco in a battle for his life, Peyton feels sidelined, until a mermaid is found floating off Natural Bridges State Beach. Beyond the media frenzy looms the very real possibility that Peyton and her team may be sucked into a standoff between the federal government and an elusive cult known only as Horizon. And Radar fears, there will be blood.

Continuing the story of Peyton Brooks and Marco which has Peyton on another case with the FBI Ghost Squad and Marco still fighting his demons of ongoing leg pain and feelings of inadequacy. He is relying overmuch on drinking to ease the pain but is still fighting counseling and a visit to the Dr. set up by Abe. The FBI are brought into the case of a new baby found in the surf with severe abnormalities and the case brings into confrontation with a commune in the hills and off the grid. Peyton is still trying to get along with her new team mates but her style and methods are giving here problems with the team leader. Marco's problems have created a breakup with Peyton and he has walked out which causes problems with them both. As you can see by this brief look this book is full of actions and more going on then listed here. Enjoy, I did.

Mermaids in the Pacific (Peyton Brooks, FBI #2) was a great read by M.L. Hamilton. Peyton was hoping that new adventure and intrigue would come into her life now that she works for the FBI. She was assigned to the Ghost Squad, and everything is wrong. Her new boss, Radar, thinks that Peyton is looking to get his job. Her once full house is now empty with only her and her dog. Peyton feels sidelined while Marco is in a battle for his life. A mermaid is found floating off Natural Bridges State Beach. Peyton and her team may be sucked into a standoff between the federal government and a cult known as Horizon. I really loved reading the life that Kelley Hazel brings to the characters. I can’t wait to read more by the author.

While Peyton’s personal life may be in shambles, she is certainly making her mark in the FBI. It’s another unusual case... the deformed body of an infant washes ashore. Could it actually be a mermaid?

Marco is struggling, but he needs to pull it together not just for himself, but also for his team as they deal with 2 big cases.

I have become so invested in these characters created by M.L. Hamilton. The more I listen, the more I want!

Kelley Hazen’s narration adds another layer to an already great story. I find myself so engrossed in what is going on that I just can’t put it down.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.

These characters have become family. AS Peyton moves to the FBI and Marco becomes precinct captain, the challenges of both love and career face the once homicide detective partners. This mystery surrounds a commune living in Santa Cruz. And ML Hamilton conveys the story of two star crossed lovers through a pen pal's letters found by a son after his mother dies. Layer over layer of mystery and intrigue told with heart breaking clarity of human emotion, tragedy and hope. I always look forward to narrating a Peyton Brooks Mystery and collaborating with ML Hamilton.

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the narrator and found it very entertaining. This is the second book in this series, I enjoyed it as much if not more than the first one. The characters just keep growing and enhance the story so much. I started in the middle of the series, so now I'm going to re-listen to book 3 and 4 so I get the full impact of the story. I'm looking forward to listening to more from this series.

Marco and Peyton!

How can they be having all these problems? Those seemed repetitive and blasé after a while. Their breakup has caused a rift in the general storyline . Still a good read. Lacked as much humor from other characters. Time for Marco to heal and them to come back together.

The second installment may have been even a little bit better than the first. Further development of the main characters was great. Marco is still a rel pain, but seems to be coming to his senses. I enjoy the separate story lines with Peyton on FBI cases, and Marco on police cases. Looking forward to the next episode.
