I must read for those interested in having a Sacred Heart devotion. Each chapter builds on the last and each have a well ordered development to higher levels of the interior life.

I throughly enjoyed every sermon as it helped develop my interior life with each chapter. It has encouraged me to look deeper into the Sacred Heart devotion.

I've known about this book for some years but I only recently had a chance to read it in concert with the month of June, which is dedicated to the Sacred Heart.

Fr. Mateo offers a practical explanation for living your faith in the modern world, particularly with reference to the Sacred Heart and the devotions associated with it. The book also includes some devotions at the end which can be fruitfully used during visits to the Blessed Sacrament.

(Our Lord to St. Teresa of Avila) "Thou shalt be holy in My way, not according to your fancy." (p. 25)

"Let Jesus Himself be your book, your Gospel." (p. 28)

"What we lack is an ardent, a practical faith shown by good works." (p. 32)

"[W]e pray as we love." (p. 34)

"But to know our virtues without being tempted to pride, or our faults without falling into discouragement, we must look at them with the Master's eyes which mirror unfailing truth and light." (p. 34)

"Great conversions are frequently brought about by the prayers, generous sacrifices and loving immolations of some hidden, unknown soul." (p. 35)

"Many apostles only believe when they are successful in their endeavors. This is fair weather faith." (p. 36)

"Love...is the whole Gospel." (p. 47)

"Love is the only true theology. It gives us all we need." (p. 48)

(quoting St. Therese) "Our confidence can never be too great." (p. 62)

"I myself forgive thee, for thy soul is the gem fro which I shed My Blood." (p. 65)

"Therefore, be more concerned for His glory than for the curing of your ills, however legitimate this desire be." (p. 66)

"What shame and reproach are ours when we meditate on our dreams of self-love and ambitions before the tabernacle." (p. 70)

"Let there be less ceremony in your way of speaking to God and be more like a child talking to its mother." (p. 73)

"[L]et us be simple in our relations with God." (p. 75)

"It is Jesus as principle: of our thoughts, our soul, our will, foundation of our joys and source of our strength." (p. 80)

"Remember, sanctity does not principally consist in laying hold of God up in the heights of heaven, but in letting ourselves be seized by Him..." (p. 81)

"[I]t is a far better thing to take the chalice from His hands and to drink of it leaning on His Heart, than to laugh and sing in the desert places of the world where He is not." (p. 84)

"[S]anctity which is a sublime form of genius, must be and can be acquired." (p. 92)

"[S]anctity is certainly not the exclusive privilege of a particular class of souls." (p. 98)

"[T]here are many complicated systems of spirituality but not enough simplicity and love; there are many methods for prayer and spiritual life, many schools of perfection and sanctity, but not enough spirit of faith to support and ennoble a daily hidden life." (p. 105)

"He asked for water — for love. They gave Him gall and vinegar and mockery." (p. 118)

"The Mass is the only wonderful thing on earth — the rest is mere shadow." (p. 125)

"Each day your faith and love, like a flame, should increase and grow, so that you will never become accustomed to a sort of routine of being there close to the altar during Mass." (p. 134-135)

"Those that are rich in grace, those that have been given treasures of faith and love, must liberally share with the many who are suffering for want of spiritual light and help." (p. 151)

"If you have not time for prayer, desist from the apostolate, and instead of cultivating other souls, water your own garden." (p. 152)

"It is a lack of faith that makes us long to see our work crowned as quickly as possible with striking and brilliant success and to desire that it should be known and published abroad that these grand results are to be attributed to us." (p. 163)

This was very good. There were a lot of wise reflections. There were some chapters that I skimmed moreso, as it just wasn’t in my interest to read an entire paragraphs/chapter praising the Little Flower (I read one of her books, I know she’s an incredible example!) Just wasn’t what I was interested in reading in this particular book. The perspective I have on this with a devotion to the Sacred Heart, I will be looking into it more.

The essay on 'Loving Confidence' was good, but the other essays after it were mediocre.
