When he won his first World Title at eighteen, they said he’d be the greatest professional surfer to ever compete. Fourteen years later, Dean "DeBaz" Bazner is inching towards retirement having never clinched another Title. This year he’s pushing limits to prove his beginning wasn’t a fluke, and it’s working. Until she comes along.

You don’t have to know anything about surfing for it to change your life. Travel writer, Azure Thomas, can attest to that. She was navigating the changing world of freelance journalism when she took this gig. She wasn’t prepared for a man that connects to her profound loss and sacrifices everything, except his soul, to live his dream. He’s more than a hot magazine cover, and surfing is more than a hobby. The dangerous diversion, in and out of the water, forces Dean to accept there's more missing from his life than another trophy.

Amongst tropical breezes, in the most beautiful locations on earth, CHASING SWELLS is an absorbing journey about riding the waves of life, overcoming childhood loss, and letting go of the mistakes that barricade us from our potential.

This was such a pleasure! What a surprise. I'm frequently asked to review audiobooks that have been self-published by authors who choose their own narrators. More often than not, it's either mediocre or a complete disaster. But this book was just delightful, a great story and great narrator to boot.

I learned a lot about surfing; I had no idea all the stuff that goes into it. I also liked the slow burn romance, taking it's time to settle into itself. The characters - all of them - were a lot of fun. The story moved along nicely and I felt like I was right there in balmy Bali, cool, damp Oregon and sunny San Diego. Actually it would have been nice to have stayed in Bali . . .

Matt Haynes was an excellent choice to narrate this story. He had just enough range to distinguish each voice and his use of accents was spot on. I think his narration made the story even better.

Goulden has renewed my faith in self-published books and author-published audiobooks. This was definitely a winner.

I was unsure of what I would find when I started reading Chasing Swells by A.L. Goulden, since this is the first book that I have read by her. By can I just say that this is not my last. The author brought the life of the story out so amazingly in the places that the characters visited that I thought I was there right along with them. And isn’t that the whole point when we read is to capture us and let us be a part of the imagery as well. To be a story about surfing I was a little skeptical, I’m not going to lie. I don’t know anything about it although I wish I could do it, but this author has combined a great love story with surfing and it works so well.

Dean “DeBaz” Bazner is living the life of a professional surfer, traveling all around the world to exotic places, having tons of fans, and making money. Anyone would think he would be the happiest man in the world with his job, but he going through the motions of life and he is not going to be happy until he back on top with that championship again. The only thing that makes him take pause is when he meets travel reporter Azure Thomas, and after coming out of a bad break up Dean is unsure if he wants to get anywhere near her, but when sparks fly between them there is no denying the chemistry they have. The question remains will she be the one that he has been looking for that changes everything for him, or will she be just a distraction from his goal to recapture that championship?

Azure Thomas has been given the chance she has waited for to further her career and make it even bigger with Travel World Magazine, but there is a catch. She has to follow a professional surfer and write an article about a sport that she knows nothing about. Azure has a plan though, she can do a little research about Dean Bazner online before she gets to Fiji, just so when she meets everyone she will seem to know a little about the sport, write her article and move on to the last leg of the journey with them and leave. What she doesn’t expect is what she finds when she gets there is the connections she feels towards Dean and his crew or family if more like it. And family is something that she hasn’t had in a very long time. But there is something about Dean that pulls her in and even though she tries to fight it she is unable to. She knows that this job is what will catapult her career into something bigger, but with what she is feeling towards this man could it be something good or will her fears cause her to push him away?

Review of Chasing Swells by A.L. Goulden

Review done for Hooked on Books & CherryOBlossom Promotions

4 ½ out of 5 stars

Azure Thomas doesn’t know the first thing about surfing. She has to learn quickly when she is assigned to cover surfer Dean “Debaz” Bazner for the magazine she works for. It is supposed to focus on travel but the more she learns about surfing, the more she wants to change the focus.

Azure is immediately attracted to Dean. He is gorgeous and smart, everything she wants in a man, but he is also too aloof. He is not a for sure in her books. Plus she has to keep her focus on writing the article; getting involved could be a disaster for her career.

Dean has surfing in his blood. His father taught him everything he knows; unfortunately he passed way before he could see Dean’s success.

Surfing has always been Dean’s passion and number 1 priority. When he meets Azure, there is something about her that throws him for a loop. She is beautiful, smart, and sassy and Dean can’t help but want to spend more time with her.

Both Dean and Azure have demons from their past that keep them from letting go of their heart. Their attraction to each other is stronger than they have ever felt before. They are perfect together. They now must decide if they can commit to making this relationship work.

I loved this sweet, romantic love story! The author did an amazing job with the details of the surfing world while also letting the reader get swept away with Dean and Azure’s love story. I loved both characters immensely and the story flowed beautifully.

I definitely recommend this book to read!

This was my first time reading something of A.L. Goulden’s and I would definitely put her on my TBR list again. What the story didn’t have in sexy heat definitely had it in layers of emotional storyline. I loved the relationships that were deep and real between Dean and his surfing crew as well as the one that built with a slow burn between Dean and Azure. The author did a great job of weaving the technical surfing jargon and aspects into the story and it lent itself to portraying surfing as the very real and intense sport that it is (it’s not just about a bunch of tanned hotties who speak like dolts). In fact, this was probably what I loved about the story the most (showing the intellect and sincerity of the sport).
There were some spots in the story I felt read a little slow but overall the flow was good and the story was well developed.
As mentioned before Chasing Swells was a slow burn. It fit the story perfectly and the build up of the Dean and Azure’s relationship perfect. There were some beautiful and heartfelt moments that pulled at the heartstrings.
I need the second instalment to this story as 1) I want more of Dean and Azure and 2) I felt that the ending was a little stunted and missing something. I actually looked for another page. It could be more of a case that the ending was a bit rushed.
Nonetheless, I enjoyed Chasing Swells and feel it is definitely worth the time to read.

Chasing Swells is a romance novel written by A.L. Goulden. After teasing his father, Randy, about being able to catch more swells, Dean Bazner sits on his surfboard, relaxing as his father tries to catch up. Years later, while on his way to Fiji (a stopover to Bali), Dean is advised that a writer will be joining him in order to write about his travels as a surfer. Nonplussed, Dean hopes the guy that they assign to the job keeps out of his way so he can train and compete in peace. When freelance reporter, Azure Thomas, arrives on the island, excited about having been chosen to write the travelling experience of the famous surfer but after encountering some surfers during the initial journey to Fiji, is less than impressed by their display of immaturity. The chemistry between Dean and Azure is electric from the moment they lay eyes on one another, but both maintain their cool exteriors in the name of professionalism. They soon realize that they share similar tragic pasts in the loss of their families so young, and feel an unexplained need to protect each other from any unexpected curve-balls that life throws their way. While their inner-voice keeps telling them both how much they need to distance themselves from each other, their attraction grows more and more, making it hard to keep their focus on their careers, which had originally brought them together in the first place.

This is certainly one of the most fun and realistic romance novels I have ever read. Getting inside the head of both of the main characters throughout the story made it very easy to relate to and engage with them both. A.L. Goulden’s use of coarse language at exactly the right moments and in the right doses adds to the realism of this wonderfully romantic (and often hilarious) tale of two adults who are in high profile careers and are used to others gushing over them, but who are determined to appear uninterested in each other, the more their feelings grow. Having a writer who knows nothing at all about the sport of the celebrity she has been sent to write about creates an innocence all of its own, especially since the only knowledge that the writer has prior to her arrival on the island is a few hours of Googling. I found myself smiling throughout most of this book, seeing a shy little boy and a modest young girl get to know each other in such a beautiful setting while overcoming past relationships which have left them both scarred. I very much enjoyed reading this book and recommend Chasing Swells to all those who love action, adventure, drama, jealousy and humor tucked into the perfect romantic tale.

Chasing Swells is a contemporary sports romance written by A.L. Goulden. Azure knew absolutely nothing about surfing or the type of life a professional surfer would live, but she was excited about her upcoming assignment to cover Dean Bazner, a surfing legend. She was a fairly new freelance writer with Travel World West, and normally this type of assignment would have gone to a more experienced writer, but Marie, who had gotten the assignment, was suddenly unavailable and the job had gone to Azure. Azure loved the idea of freelance travel writing. She was adept at packing light and at a moment's notice, and, after her last unsatisfactory relationship, she enjoyed the freewheeling and unattached lifestyle that went with the position. While she was covering Dean's event in Bali, his team was currently in Fiji where she would be meeting up with them. The island of Tavarua, where they were staying, enchanted her. She was treated like family by the Fijians she came in contact with and the Treehouse accommodations were way beyond her expectations. And Dean, well, Dean was another matter entirely. She didn't like the idea of being a fan girl or hanger-on at all, but there was something about him that she found hard to resist.

A.L. Goulden's contemporary sports romance, Chasing Swells, blends surfing, travel to exotic locales, and the stories of two independent and scarred people who might just be the best thing that ever happened to each other -- that is, if they can get past the baggage and the glitz of the pro-tour circuit. I was attracted to this title because of the surfing, the California locations, and those exotic locales, and I wasn't disappointed. Goulden makes those heats and competitions come alive; you can almost feel the hot, tropical sun and hear the boom of the big waves as they crash down. Azure and Dean are marvelous characters and their on-again/off-again would-be romance is fun to watch and totally unpredictable. Goulden also does a masterful job of creating a supporting cast for her two stars, and, as Azure realizes with a start, the reader can't help but feel as though those people have become like family, at least until the book is finished and then perhaps for a bit longer. Heady romance amidst the magic of sand and surf is a winning combination indeed. Chasing Swells is highly recommended.

DIRTY KNEES REVIEWS: CHASING SWELLS by A. L. GOULDEN
5 DIRTY KNEES!
D's review:
Ranked third in the world's surfing elite, Dean "DeBaz" Bazner is living the life traveling the world to exotic locations, chasing the dream of being number one, one wave at a time. Living the carefree life Dean thinks he has all changes when he lands eyes on Azure Thomas.
Azure is a freelance journalist assigned to cover a three article spread on Dean's travels from Fiji to Bali. It was suppose to be a simple assignment until Dean opens her eyes to his way of life. She meets the extended family he always travels with on the surfing circuit and the uncomplicated assignment starts to unravel as they treat her as their own.
It's a beautiful love story that grows strong when distance and time tries to stand in their way. I have always found exotic locations and surfing awe inspiring so when I read the description of this book I did not hesitate to dive in. I.LOVED.IT.FROM.PAGE.ONE! Everything about it held me captive and wanting more. The only one thing I could say I didn't like (and this is a stretch) is they talked surf lingo in one part...THAT'S IT! This was my first experience with A.L. Goulden and it definitely will not be my last!
C's Review:
If you love reading love stories, you will absolutely love this story! A. L. Goulden is a visual writer. She took me to the beach with her fluid writing style and vivid descriptions. The story is refreshing and kept a steady pace and flow, keeping the characters interesting with their interactions. It is such an awesome summer read full of sun, beach and surf!
While D didn't like the 'surf lingo,' I did! I thought it added to the story and brought a sense of realism.
I knew nothing about this author or her writings before reading Chasing Swells. Now I can call myself a fan and follower!
I highly recommend watching the trailer to Chasing Swells. Absolutely amazing!
We both agree: 5 DIRTY KNEES!

This is a solid, solid book for a little-known author (None of her books break the 100 review mark on Goodreads). Well written, the world building was thoughtful, and the characters were obviously lovingly developed. I will admit to a small dislike for Azure for being written as the male fantasy of a girl who eats whatever she wants but is still like whip thin, but, hey, that's a small quibble!

Azure doesn’t know anything about surf, for her, all surfers are only thinking about the next wave. She has a little problem with people, she has one friend, she lost her parents and now she doesn’t want to let people in because she’s afraid of losing them. Azure is nice, she’s attracted by Dean but she won’t let him enter. She wants to do her job well, write her article and go back to her life. But Dean will change everything. Dean is attractive, he’s a good surfer and he wants to win the championship.
I like Dean, he’s hot, smart, he loves book and science, he loves surf and he’s not the kind of surfer everyone imagines. Azure is nice too but she’s not confident in herself. I like their relation, it’s building slowly and I really feel their love for each other.
The story is great, I love surf and I always find surfing story very attractive even if I’m like Azure and know nothing about it. The others characters are very nice and interesting too because Dean Friends are his family and it’s nice to see them bond together. They are nice with Azure they don’t let her behind, they explain her everything and made her feels safe.
The author made a great job of explaining surf and its culture, it’s not only the waves, it’s also the respect of the ocean and the nature. The story isn’t very surprising but it’s refreshing and it’s a good summer read.

DeBaz is going for the championship, a surfers dream. Dean, is a professional. Ranked number 3 he is going for the top rank in the world.
Azure is a free lance reporter assigned to cover Dean's travels to get to the top. Little do both of them know that meeting each other would be like catching the ultimate wave.
This story is beautiful because you have a woman that is not confident doing a job where confidence is key to getting what you want and a guy who has all the confidence for both of them.
Their relationship will take on one hell of a ride as the navigate each others issues and find that they are better together.
I loved Dean, he is charismatic and sexy swagger and of course he is HOT!!!
Azure is much like me I guess not really sure of herself but trying to make out in the world where there are plenty of good looking men but yeah none are looking at you. Were friendships are hard to come by and never easy to let in. Dean cracks all of her barriers and shows her who she really is both from the outside and the inside.

There is nothing better than cool ocean breezes and great waves. Although I’m doing time in Suburgatory, now I can recall many a lunch break watching the surfers and the waves, but mostly watching the surfers. There is something magical about their effortlessness. Chasing Swells has that same bewitching allure. It doesn’t hurt that the locales are exotic as the locals, and the glimpse of the contemporary nomadic athlete lifestyle is fascinating.

Chasing Swells is a great read and much like the perfect wave, it will leave you speechless with its beauty. Start your summer off right and pick this one up now.

nothing like getting "THE PERFECT WAVE" and Dean knows this all to well, being ranked no. 3 in top surfers isn't easy but now with a end coming Dean is wanting the ultimate wave ride, little does he know it can happen in dry land. Azure is after the story, but not having the confidence you need makes it hard but here she is but what happens when you meet a sexy surfer with enough confidence for both? These two together complete each other, but will they follow thier feelings? I really enjoyed this book, great characters and story.

Dean "DeBaz" Bazner is 32 and a longtime competitive surfer. Yet for as long as he has surfed he has gone without a major championship win since his rookie year and is wondering when it will be time to stop competing.

Azure Thomas is a travel writer with who knows absolutely nothing about surfing yet as been assigned to cover Dean as he travels to a few different locations for surfing competitions.

When Dean and Azure meet sparks fly but will they be able to get over their differences to find some common ground? When they realize some of their similarities will it be enough?

This was an interesting book about the different paths that people take to follow their dreams. For some they work hard and follow their path and for others they work for others and wait for their dreams to come to them.

Dean worked super hard to stay at the top of his field and surrounded himself with those who would help him get there. He had definitely had his heart broken in the past and wasn't looking forward to that again but there was something about Azure that warmed his heart and brought him in. But at the same time Dean didn't like what he was becoming around her - jealous and unfocused.

Azure had no idea how involved being a surfer was and how little time they actually spent at their home. She learned so much with being out with Dean. But at the same time she was trying to discover how she truly felt about Dean with everything going on.

The relationship between Azure and Dean was definitely interesting. Neither of them spoke about how they felt about the other and both did some running from the other while they were trying to sort things out. I felt deep down that they would be together but I wasn't sure what they would have to do to get there.

This was a great book and I must admit that I fell a little in love with the idea of surfing and the competitions!

A story full of angst, humor, and romance!

Chasing Swells is a great book to read for to have a little vacation and get away from life for a bit. AL Goulden does a good job of giving you visual narrations without overloading and dragging the story on. You feel like you are right there tasting the ocean water and air. It does start just a tad slow however, it does not take long for it to pick up and capture your attention. The story is full of humor, angst and romance. You get to know the characters well with enough background to keep them real. AL Goulden did a great job of bringing out the emotions and connection with the characters. You learn that life is not always easy and what becomes of it is what you make out of it. This book will keep you turning page after page to the very end.

Matt Haynes does a good job with the narration. He has a clear and crisp voice that is easy to follow.

This is the first book that I have read by AL Goulden. I recommend Chasing Swells to anyone that enjoys reading a sports novel with some romance.

3.5 Stars. If you are looking for a slow burn romance set on the pro surf tour of a sexy surfer, this book is for you. Dean is hot, smart, kind and talented. This coupled with a good taste of pro surf culture, and the exotic locales of the surf competitions made this novel a good read.

For Audiobook listeners.
I think the audiobook narrator was poorly cast. His voice was too mature and conservative for the main character. As I listened to the book, I struggled to imagine the cool laid back surf boy that the narrator was trying to portray. The characters voices didn't always vary and I often couldn't distinguish who was speaking. You are probably better off reading the print version.

Chasing Swells tells us the story of Dean a professional surfer thru the eyes of Azure a traveling journalist. I don't know much about this Sport but here you get to see how they travel, know a little about the boards and how the interpret the waves in order to ride the best one.

In the meantime Azure and Dean get to know each other and discover their affinity and love for each other. They're a great passionate couple. Dean is fun, relaxing, handsome and Azure is beautiful but guarded, being alone most of her life. She needs to learn to trust him and them as a couple.

I really enjoyed this book and would love to read Azure's journals.

Chasing Swells was the first book I've read by author, A. L. Goulden. Needless to say it won't be my last. This story was so mesmerizing I could not put the book down. The characters of Dean and Azure were so enticing and well developed. Their instant chemistry and attraction drew me in from the beginning. Their journey had many bumps in the road and I often wondered if they could get past them and could they both believe in their love for each other and overcome their tragic pasts. I also enjoyed the secondary characters as well. They brought to life the story and made they book much more enjoyable. This book was so well written and I would give it a definite 5 stars.

Title: Chasing Swells
Author: A.L. Goulden
Format: Audio
Narrator: Matt Haynes
Genre: Romance, Sports (Surfing)
Standalone: Yes
Part of a Series: There's a companion novel Chasing Dreams but I don't think Chasing Swells is part of a series
POV: Dean and Azure
Steam Level: Slow burn to steamy
4.5/5

I want more of Dean and Azure's HEA!!! I enjoyed Chasing Swells a lot. There are not a lot of romances that I read that feature surfing as a sport. I liked how A.L. Goulden mixes in the technical aspects of the sport and competition while not deviating too far from Dean and Azure's relationship.

I received this audiobook for free from StoryOrign. This is my honest and voluntary review.

Dean and Azure meet while she is writing an article for a travel magazine. They have instant chemistry and do not act on it as they think the other one is sending mixed signals. It took me a while to get into this story as I kept wondering when they would finally get together, but it was well worth the wait. AL Goulden writes an intricately woven story with lots of drama and angst with added technical surfing jargon for all the enthusiasts. This was my first book by this author and it will not be my last.

This is not only a new author for me but also the first book I have read with surfing as the main focus. I loved the surfing aspect this with the description of the sport and the islands as well as the supportig characters, brought more life to the story. This was a relatively slow burn romance which brought an authenticity to the realtionship, there were emotional aspects form the beginning for both Azure and Dean. I will admit that I really wanted Dean's character to be a bit stronger at times, but overall I found this to be a lovely sweet romance and I would love to read more

Chasing Swells by A. L. Goulden pulled me in immediately. The characters are endearing, the descriptions were vibrant, and the storyline was excellent. I really enjoyed this slow burn romance that centered around a surfer. Having grown up around water, I could envision so many details. Matt Haynes was fantastic bringing the characters to life with his voice. He inflicted the right emotions in the book. The character of Azure in the story was my favorite. I will definitely listen to more books by this author and narrator.

I was very happy to win this book in a Goodreads giveaway and have enjoyed reading it, thank you. I'd say it would be a great book to read on holiday at the beach or by the pool (or alternately indoors while wishing you were somewhere far more exotic!) I'd categorize it as a entertaining, escapist romance. As someone who loves going to the beach and swimming in the sea, I found the surfing theme very interesting (though I have no balance for it in real life unfortunately!).

This story took me a little time to get into. But it was well worth it. Dean grew up in the world of surfing. And is chasing the championship. Azure knows nothing about the sport of surfing but has to join Dean and the guys on the surf circuit. This could make or break her writing career. Sometimes you find love when you least expect or want to.

Dean is one of the worlds greatest surfers so when Azure is assigned to write an article on traveling with this group she is way over her head. She and Dean have a lot in common but they are both so stubborn they will have to fight for a relationship. Loved their inner thoughts and how they got along.
