OM: A Tantric Sex Cult Odyssey

Rate this book
This novella (loosely based on a true story) is about a man in his forties who, by his own admission, is a poor lover, and, like most of us, insecure. He joins a tantric sex organization - which may or may not be a cult - in an attempt to learn how to satisfy women in general, and one in particular. Two friends of his join up with him. Their goal is to immerse themselves in this controversial program and emerge as “master strokers,” experts at getting women not just to climax but to have massive orgasms—by using only their fingertip! OM (Orgasmic Meditation), is ready for them, luring them with intriguing ideas like “nesting” with half naked women. But are they ready for OM? During a journey which includes workshops, a road-trip and a retreat, our protagonist battles with his sexual limitations and his demons (such as jealousy). During this often hilarious adventure, larger issues are explored such as the impact that pornography is having on how people think about sex. Also, how sex, more than ever, is about “the man doing his thing and the woman playing along.” When considering this, maybe a sex cult designed to flip the Western paradigm on its head, is not such a bad thing after all. You decide.

Hi, I am a b-level humorist; a pretty good story teller with a knack for recognizing the absurd. I have written three books, "OM", (createsspace )a short satire/novella about a pussy rubbing cult) based off of a Penthouse article I wrote in 2013. "Caught" (Creatspace,(about a black market fishing industry I was involved with, book did not sell well but almost got me killed) and Train Wreck self-published at first, but eventually picked up by Simon and Schuster. (Memoir based on some crappy jobs I had, and being confined to special education as a kid) Miraculously, lightning struck, and Train Wreck was made into a movie by Now closed: This is That productions (ted Hope Any Carey and others) and released by Lions Gate films in 2012, it was/is featured on HBO, for six month 2014-15. (new name American loser, name changed to stir an association with American Pie Trilogy Stars Seann William Scott, Gretchen MOl, Jeff Garlin..little cameo from one of my favorite author Jonathan Ames!) Though it somehow got a good review in Variety magazine, The movie is not great: no arche, no obstacles to over come for protagonist, no conflict, no resolutions, THESE ingredients must be present in all films idie or not (one star on Redbox.com and NExflix.. rather than entertain, AL made people angry ;they express there indignation by posting on sites..NOT A COMEDY!! etc, they felt doped..so angry they felt the need to review!) a little too slow for most, nor was the memoir great, the fish rots from the head, looking back, though it had good/funny sections, It was too episodic. NO/weak narrative! established competent agents and publishers told me this early on, but, still wanting to be the toast of the literary town, I did not want to listen to the establishment , so I went with the vanity Press. The result: a bad book made a bad movie, no supersize there. ( nO I am am not being self-deprecating in this case, though I do use that as a devise/crutch often)
I run a very modest (as in, no money) fishing business out in Montauk NY. I was a stand up for a spell. When not living off/with my parents, I've make most of my money from writing, fishing, substitute teaching, and walking dogs in NYC. I also sold my self-published books on the street of New York. ( as Shown in PIcs.)
Side note: s plea to stop the insanity of self-publishing.
self-publishing is a rough road for most/too many people are doing it:300,000 in USA alone last year, 1.3 million uploaded last year world wide.!! Stop the insanity! SP is full of seduction, all the platforms, blogging, podcasts, hopes of "social media", translating to sales, lure us in. We drink the Cooliad. we are INCURRAGED by the few that hit it big, and follow them off the cliff: el Jmaes, fifty Shades of Gray Ect, (and there are a few more but most of the sP books are in Si fi Romance and usually have a Vampire or a Werwolf as there central character.) but in reality SP is road, I think for most anyway. to misery, to desperation. To annoying FB friends to repost links, then hating them when they don't. IN the end, lured by fame and notoriety, Self- publishing industry drops most of us off by an Underpass on a buzzy, smog choked free-way, bewildered, holding only our shoes, watching, helplessly as cars fly by.
I digress: On a lighter note!! I have had stuff appear in Penthouse mag, THE New York Post, Dans paper, The Fisherman mag, and The New York Press , plus, THe Long Island Pulse., and our town.! I have been a guest on on NPR and the Howard Stern show. as a comic, I have opened for Pat copper, Lewis Black, Kevin Klein.
new book coming out in June:
How MY Slef Published Memoir, made it to Hollywood, and other self-publishing disasters

This book is pretty funny, if you can get past how sloppily it's written. The author confesses in the acknowledgments that his editor had to do a shit-ton of work to make the book readable. I can't imagine what it was like before the editor got his hands on it. There are missing quotation marks, letters capitalized for no reason… it's like no one proofread it before it went to the printer.

That said, Jeff Nichols is funny and observant, and approaches the OM topic with an open mind. This book is actually way better than Nicole Daedone's.

I won this book on the Goodreads giveaway & I can't wait to receive this book in the mail and start reading!

April 18:

Once I got through the explicit language, I actually started to enjoy this book and the thoughts of Jeff as he explored this sex cult. The story-line became very intriguing and such a cliff-hanger at the end. I was not expecting him and Laura to get eloped! I hope there is a sequel. If there is I hope their is better editing because that made me deduct the book some stars.

I really enjoyed this little book! A very funny adventure about a writer who tries to understand the "enlightened" world of Tantric sex through an off the wall set of workshops that teach males how to honor the vagina. It is a light read that one can finish in an evening and have a few good laughs. Highly recommended!

This was surprisingly better than i expected! Its not some porn laden book, more of a humorous tale of a middle aged man trying to get good at sex when Viagra gets too expensive

I just finished reading this book I received from the Goodreads First Reads giveaway, called Om: A Tantric Sex Cult Odyssey by Jeff Nichols. It’s listed on Amazon in the humor/satire category, I have assumed throughout the time I’ve been reading it that it is purely satirical.

After today’s Googling, I’m not quite sure that it’s truly satire. In fact, I’m starting to get the feeling that it’s mostly true. The book is about a guy who gets involved, through a girlfriend, with a group that practices Orgasmic Meditation (OM), which at its core is a large room full of people where the object of the game seems to be to diddle women’s vageeners with a specific finger in a highly specific manner (known as oming) for fifteen minutes at a time.

I googled, and found out that there is such a group, with chapters in most major cities, including a DC Meetup Group with 110 members and a weekly meet-up.

Not going to pass judgement one way or another. If women out there need fiddlin’ and diddlin’ on a purely technical level, with no emotional connection whatever, more power to ’em.

But the book’s pretty damned funny, in terms of characters anyway. It’s a quick read. And if you’re considering joining the meet-up groups to learn to become a diddler or to enjoy being diddled, I really believe this book will serve as a perfect introduction which might lessen the awkward embarrassment of a meet-up.

I don’t think the guys get any reciprocity out of this whatsoever, other than the esteemed title of Advanced Stroker or Master Stroker (according to the book, anyway). Sorry, guys. Maybe you can put that title on your business card, although people might interpret it as something else entirely.

To that end, anyone that promotes a sexual philosophy that doesn't include male orgasm, well, I'll just have to fall back on my maleness and bow out of that one. Also, rubber gloves ain't no good for diddlin'.

Fun read, though, for sure.

I received this book thru a Goodreads Giveaway. I'm sure that it is and will be a big hit with many readers, but I'm not one of them. It was a little too rough for me and pretty much rubbed me the wrong way right from the start. But, that said, so does opera, and I know people who LOVE opera.

Some typos and a repetitive style that seemed sloppy/lazy not intentional turned me off. There's some very funny parts and the author was nice enough to send me a copy, so I'll get back to it some day.
