Coach Opie left this behind when he high-tailed it out of Globe. This book was loaded with quotes and a lot of things you've heard echoed through the years in self-help courses. It didn't have any practical stuff.

"Coaching is nothing more than eliminating mistakes before you get fired." - Lou Holtz

5 steps to be the coach you were meant to be:

1. Define the specific results you wish to achieve.
2. Create a plan that, when followed, will achieve those results
3. Develop the internal motivation necessary to take action.
4. Build strong confidence within yourself and your team so that everyone performs at the optimal level.
5. Instill a focused determination within your team so everyone can overcome problems and obstacles without giving up.

"Football is a game of errors, the team with the fewest of errors usually wins." - Paul Brown

"All coaching is, is taking a player where he can't take himself." - Bill McCartney

"Writing crystalizes thought, and crystalized thought motivates to action."

The most effective motivation is that which is self motivated. And you do that through affirmation.

The present pattern of your personality and your life is the result of all the influences to which you have been exposed since your birth, together with your reactions to, and your feelings about, those experiences.

You should enjoy becoming the person you want to be. Achievement loses its meaning if you fail to enjoy the process.

"When you talk about motivation, your job is to teach attitude and that attitude is an everyday experience. It is easy to tell when a kid is not performing well or having trouble on the campus with teachers and grades - then you know immediately that you have to take the steps to correct that. I think that, more than anything else, is important to motivation." - Bo Schembechler

When it comes to leading others, they must have confidence and trust in you. Not only you but also themselves and in the team as a whole.

"Anytime you give a man something he does not earn, you cheapen him. Our kids earn what they get, and that includes respect." - Woody Hayes

"You can motivate by fear, and you can motivate by reward. Both these methods are only temporary. The only lasting thing is self motivation." Homer Rice

Leadership naturally involves some coaching so this book has useful information and ideas for any leader. It's also written by a coach who tends to repeat everything three or more times which is not necessary for most of us. The basic concepts are useful and can be skimmed over fairly quickly.

This book has changed my life in so many ways. another book that I will read again and again. I'm not a fan of the Woody Hayes quotes, but this is such a powerful book I can overlook them and enjoy it. I have given this book to a few friends. They loved it too.

Paul J. Meyer is a legend in the industry. This book is presented in a fashion that makes it really easy to see what you need to do next, then do it. Contains excellent guidance for both the novice, as well as the master.

It was ok. I thought that the book could have gone deeper into certan aspects of what it means to be a coach and how to better lead people. There really was nothing new from this book.
